Based on the acclaimed Jerzy Kosinski novel, THE PAINTED BIRD follows the journey of The Boy, entrusted by his persecuted parents to an elderly foster mother. The old woman soon dies and the Boy is on his own, wandering through the country-side, from village to farmhouse. As he struggles for survival, The Boy suffers through extraordinary brutality meted out by the ignorant, superstitious peasants and he witnesses the terrifying violence of the efficient, ruthless soldiers, both Russian and German. When the war ends, The Boy has been changed, forever.

From producer Alex White and executive producer Jan Chapman (Winner of 3 Academy Awards & Palme d’Or for The Piano, Nominated Academy Award & Palme d’Or for Bright Star, Winner Camera d’Or for Love Serenade). Based on the play BABYTEETH by Rita Kalnejais.

When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla soon shows everyone in her orbit - her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbour - how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead yet and how far we will go for love.

Death of a

Ladies’ Man

from the producers of BROOKLYN, ONCE and CHICAGO

Samuel O’Shea, a university professor of poetry, exuberant womanizer and enthusiastic drinker has seen better days. His second marriage is ending, and his wife and children are at their wits’ end with him. More disturbingly, he has begun seeing things: Frankenstein sidles up to the bar and strangers sing and dance to Leonard Cohen tunes. His much-missed father, who died when Samuel was just a boy, pops up for chats. At first Samuel thinks it could be the drink, or perhaps he’s just crazy or over-imaginative, but then learns he has a brain tumour. Reflecting on the life he has lived, Samuel retreats to his family shack in remote Ireland, where he begins work on that great novel he always meant to write, and generally take stock. Surprisingly, or not, he meets and falls in love with a woman, who is full of unexpected ideas. All this leads Samuel to an utterly unforeseeable happy ending.

Miss Marx

Set in 19th Century England, MISS MARX centers on the life on Karl Marx’s youngest daughter Eleanor.

In her public persona, Eleanor “Tussy” Marx was a translator, actress, and a powerful political activist, a feminist ahead of her time. In her private life, however, she was vulnerable in love and ultimately ruined by her long relationship with the notorious cad, Edward Aveling.

Untitled Ben Foster

William Burroughs

Project

The Untitled Ben Foster/Williams Burroughs Project explores an unusual love triangle between Burroughs (Foster), his unsung, brilliant, charismatic, common-law muse, Joan Vollmer (Stewart), and a young, straight-laced American ex-pat named Allerton (Glynn-Carney) who upends their lives to the extreme.

Burroughs (Junkie, Queer, Naked Lunch) is regarded as the primary literary outlaw of the 1950s, 60s and 70s; his books have influenced generations of writers, musicians and artists, and have consistently been distinguished as the most stolen paperbacks in the world. The film is based on his legendary early works and letters.

Infinity Pool

The original screenplay, written by Cronenberg, folows James Foster, an uninspired writer and his wife, Em, on their all-inclusive vacation on the picturesque island of Li Tolqa. Befriended by the glamorous Gabi and Alban, the couples enjoy a forbidden picnic in the off limits Li Tolqan countryside that takes a sinister turn: the accidental fatality of a farmer leads to a death sentence for James. James can escape the verdict of local justice, but the uncanny mechanism that will ensure his survival also reveals a perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

A charming comedy about two French women in Japan. Irene is a confident renowned sexologist, invited to Tokyo to deliver a keynote speech. Josephine, her testy translator, has been living in Japan for several years. Accidently, this odd duo is thrown together for an extravagant road trip through the luxuriant countryside. As they navigate their way through exotic and puzzling adventures, other mysteries are revealed. Despite her sexpertise, Irene has been “dumped” by her French boyfriend and she’s on a sentimental quest for a lost Japanese lover, Hiro. Josephine also gets a secret off her chest, one she has kept very close. In the end, they will find friendship, love, beauty and more, all in Noashima.

Why are We / Are We Not

Page 17: FALL 2019 - Celluloid Dreams · invited to Tokyo to deliver a keynote speech. Josephine, her testy translator, has been living in Japan for several years. Accidently, this odd duo

The movie is a sequel to Vaske’s “Why Are We Creative”, but while the first film concentrates on the promoters and sponsors of creativity, this new film unveils the true killers of creativity. It’s an exploration of the toxic circumstances that act as beta blockers to ideas in all the various creative disciplines.

The movie will follow director Hermann Vaske and his sidekick Michael Madsen on their mission to unmask and identify the idea killers. Together they analyze what screws up creativity in order to identify the villains, from self-censorship to anxiety, from distraction to bureaucracy. The assassins of creativity are many and they are lurking everywhere. And oddly, our reasons for not being creative are often very creative indeed…

As Vaske says: “In an age of uncertainty, where only creativity can help to solve the problems of the world, simply encouraging creativity is not enough. Only when we know where the enemy stands will we be able to avoid the beta blockers of creativity.”

FEATURING: MARINA ABRAMOVIC, JEFF KOONS, MICHEL HOUELLEBECQ, GEORGE R.R. MARTIN, JOHN CLEESE, MALCOLM MCLAREN, VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, WIM WENDERS, MIKE LEIGH, BJORK, BONO, PETER GABRIEL, OSCAR NIEMEYER, ISABELLA ROSSELLINI , WILLEM DAFOE...

Vaske’s subjects include: David Bowie, Ai Weiwei, Björk, Wim Wenders, Philippe Stark, Yoko Ono, John Hegarty, David Lynch, Yohji Yamamoto, Damien Hirst, Angelina Jolie, Nobuyoshi Araki, Quentin Tarantino, Bono, Nick Cave, Neo Rauch, Stephen Hawking, the Dalai Lama, Peter Ustinov, Marina Abramovic, Diane Kruger, Julian Schnabel, John Cleese, Jimmy Page, Vivienne Westwood, Takeshi Kitano and many others.
