X. Opera Field Trip Learning in Later Life will sponsor a field trip to see Giacomo Puccini’s most famous opera: La Bohème. Opera Connecticut will perform a live, fully staged production of La Bohème at the University of Saint Joseph’s Hoffman Auditorium in West Hartford, CT. The orchestra will consist of members of the Hartford Symphony under the direction of Doris Kosloff, Opera Connecticut’s Director. Cast to be announced. La Bohème is based on Henri Murger's novel, Scènes de la vie de Bohème, a collection of vignettes portraying young bohemians living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840s. La Bohème is about student life in the Paris Latin Quarters, home of the Sorbonne University. Some think Puccini used some actual reminiscences from his own student life. The opera focuses on the love affair between the student poet, Rodolfo and Mimì, a seamstress. They fall in love on Christmas Eve, break up, and then reunite in time for Mimì to die of consumption. The music is glorious with heart-felt love duets, a lively Christmas Eve scene in Paris complete with dinner at Café Momus and the famous aria, Musetta’s Waltz. All members are most welcome to join us for a memorable opera adventure to travel with us by luxury coach from Springfield College to the Hoffman Auditorium in West Hartford. SPECIAL FEE: $59.00 (Ticket and Transportation) Date: Sunday, October 21, 2018 Time: Bus departs at 12:45 p.m. from Lot 10 behind the Physical Education Complex on Alden Street.

XI. Shakespeare’s Henry V Professor Rebecca Lartique is back as requested. Although she is on sabbatical, she has graciously agreed to offer two sessions of Shakespeare's Henry V and then inviting the class to attend a live performance of the play at the Hartford Stage in late October, for an additional fee. Rebecca will lead the class in studying this rich history play with "Shakespeare on our Feet" activities developed by the Folger Shakespeare Library. No acting experience or physical mobility is required, just a willingness to participate to the degree that you are comfortable. The instructor recommends this edition (available from libraries, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble): Henry V, Pelican Shakespeare (ed. Claire McEachern). For a good free online edition of the play, go to www.folger.edu/henry-v and click "read the play" on the right.

In Shakespeare’s Henry V, shortly after gaining the throne, Henry must decide whether or not to embark on a war that could solidify his reign—or bring his country to its knees. In France, he grows up fast under the pressure to use all means necessary to win a war against tremendous odds. But even if he finds victory, how easy will it be to settle the peace? SPECIAL FEE: $59.00 (Ticket and Transportation) Date: October 14 Time: Transportation leaves at 12:45p.m. from Lot 10 behind the Physical Education Complex on Alden Street.

XIV. Talking Politics with Dan

The 2018 Congressional election promises to be one of the most important off-year elections in memory. Surprisingly, both houses are conceivably in play, something quite unlikely a year ago. And the stakes are high, in terms of who holds power and virtually every policy issue in the political system. We will look at the potential outcomes for the membership of Congress and the course of public affairs in America. In the first session we’ll try to get a feel for how things are shaping up. We will dedicate the second session to assessing the outcomes and considering their implications for the future. Instructor: Dr. Dan Russell, Springfield College Professor of Political Science (Ret) Dates: Tuesdays October 16; November 13 Time: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Location: Brennan 125

XV. The Life and Poetry of Robert Frost Explored through the voice of Ed Dibble, no poet has captured the essence of the American experience as clearly as the boy from San Francisco who made good in our New England. Come share in the road not taken. Instructor: Ed Dibble Date: Wednesdays, October 17, 24th Time: 10:30-12:00 pm

Location: Loomis Reed’s Landing

XVI. Film Classics

This semester we will be viewing three films featuring one-woman film writer and two women film directors.

In the first session we will view Dinner at Eight. In this film the screenplay was written by Frances Marion. She is often cited as the most renowned female screenwriter of the 20th century. She was the first woman writer to win an Academy Award. She started in the silent era writing several films for Mary Pickford.

In the second session we will view The Hitchhiker directed by Ida Lupino. She was born in London and came to the United States and appeared in several films as an actress and then turned to directing as well as writing and producing in films and television.

In the third session we will view A League of Their Own directed by Penny Marshall. Born in 1943, she acted in movies and television before turning to directing. Other films she directed are Big and Awakenings.

XVII. The Social Justice History of Springfield College

Springfield College is widely known in our community for a number of things. It is, of course, the Birthplace of Basketball. It has a longstanding connection with the YMCA. The school's commitment to community service through its philosophy of Humanics is well established. Lesser known, but no less impressive, is the school's longstanding commitment to social justice. How many people, for instance, are aware of the fact that the school's very first 4-year diploma was earned by an African-American student? How many are aware of the fact that the school took in Japanese-American students directly from "internment camps" in World War 2? Or that the school had varsity sports for women well ahead of the passage of Title IX? Or that arguably its greatest athlete was gay--someone who came out in the most public fashion imaginable (in the pages of Newsweek magazine in 1976)? And how many know the real story of Martin Luther King Jr.'s appearance on campus in 1964 at the apex of his fame and the height of the civil rights movement? Join Professor of Communications and national-award-winning writer Marty Dobrow for a lively discussion of this little-known history of Springfield College. Instructor: Marty Dobrow, Springfield College Professor of Communications Dates: Friday: November 9 Time: 10:30 – 12:00 Location: Loomis Lakeside Reed’s Landing

XVIII. Edith Wharton (1862-1937) One of the most popular American woman authors during the first 40 years of the 20th century, Bob will tell her story growing up in Manhattan and then designing, building and financing her estate, The Mount in Lenox, and her lifetime of writing from 1895 until her death in 1937 in Paris. As a former professional tour guide at The Mount, Bob has a wealth of information about her life and The Mount. The idea of a spring 2019 trip to The Mount will be entertained. Not surprisingly, Loomis Lakeside at Reed’s Landing’s auditorium is named “The Wharton Room”.

XX. Fall Nature Walk at the Graves Farm Wildlife Sanctuary

Our nature walk this fall is on Adams Road in Williamsburg. Fall marks the period when animals and plants begin preparations to deal with the demands of winter. The most noticeable sign of this is the changing color of leaves on plants, and especially deciduous trees. This magic captures what fall is really about for most New Englanders. Our nature adventure will take us through several areas of the Graves Sanctuary with an easy level of walking. Nevertheless, wear proper footwear, bring water and possibly a snack. (LIMIT 25)

Leader: Dr. Dietrich Schlobohm Date: Wednesday: October 24 (Rain Date: October 31) Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon. Location: Adams Road, Williamsburg, Massachusetts Directions: From Springfield take Rte. 91 north. Get off at exit #19(Northampton/Amherst). At the bottom of the ramp go straight ahead onto Damon Rd. Stay on this road for about a mile, cross rte. 5, continue straight ahead as the road becomes Bridge Rd. Continue on Bridge Rd until you come to Rte. 9. Enter the roundabout and go north, right) on Rte. 9. Go about 5 to 6 miles and make a right on to Depot Road. There is a lumber yard on your right just before you get to Depot. Stay on Depot until you get to Adams Road. Make a right onto Adams and drive a few minutes until you get to the Sanctuary on your right. The drive from Springfield is about 45 minutes. Again, wear proper footwear, bring water and possibly a snack. If you have any questions, call Dietrich at 413-788-4125
