Submissions to the Fall Issue of the newsletter are due by October 31. We have some events coming up like the Draft Tests, Williamsburg Parade and Annual Meeting. Rescue might also have some events coming up. Maybe even mention something about Membership Renewals. Current memberships are good through September 30. The Fall issue will be published on/around November 15. This would be a good issue to make sure we get flyers included in the Bear Fare for these events as well as email broadcasts to the membership (which can be done at any time).

One of the items that was discussed, were recent communications (guidelines) from the NCA Working Dog Committee regarding safety at working events. If your club hasn’t received this information and it has an upcoming water or draft test, contact Sue Raney, chair of the NCA Working Dog Committee. Something that was not mentioned that the NCA Regional Specialty Show Coordinator asked me to share: Due to the lateness of some regional clubs with regional specialty show applications, the NCA Board has adopted policies that assesses a fine for late applications. Also, the individual regional specialty is now responsible to reimburse NCA for any related fines assessed by AKC for late show applications.

COLONIAL NEWFOUNDLAND RESCUE UPDATE

This year Rescue has taken in 13 dogs thus far. We currently have 2 Newfs in foster homes and 3 more coming into Rescue. We always get busy with intakes during the holidays.

April is just around the corner and we are already thinking about where to hold our annual meeting for 2018. Last year we held it at a winery in Northern Virginia and about 50 people plus dogs attend. Unfortunately, the day of our event, it rained the entire day! We requested a large party tent but it was not large enough for everyone to comfortably take shelter from the rain. If you know of a dog friendly venue that we could reserve for our annual meeting in April, please email your suggestion to: [email protected]

Many thanks to everyone who donated to Rescue this year. Without your help we would not be able to take in Newfs needing to be surrendered. In addition to making a monetary donation, you can also help Rescue by choosing Colonial Newfoundand Rescue as your charity on Amazon.com. For more information, please visit www.smile.amazon.com. Be sure to check out our website www.colonialnewfrescue.org for oth-er companies that will also make charitable donations to Rescue.

Rescue is chairing a Christmas Parade in downtown Leesburg, Virginia on December 9th. This is open to all of our members, adopters and Newf friends. See the parade flyer in this issue of the Bear Fare.

Many thanks to Kathy Paxton who served on the Colonial Newfoundland Rescue Board of Directors as our Vice President. We are excited to welcome Paula McPherson as a new board member. She will be serv-ing as a Member-at-Large; replacing Dave Rothschild. Dave Rothschild will be our new Vice President. Congratulations Dave!

Best wishes to everyone for the holidays and for a prosperous 2018!

Christmas & Holiday Parade!

Annual Christmas & Holiday Parade Historic/Downtown Leesburg, Virginia

Saturday, December 9th, 2017

Staging area opens at 3:00pm. Line up starts at 5:00pm. Parade begins at 6:00pm.

This is the first year Colonial Newfoundland Rescue will be sponsoring the Annual Christmas & Holiday Parade in Leesburg, Virginia. Participation in this event is open to all Colonial Newfound-land members. You do not need a rescued Newfoundland to participate. We hope that you can join us for this opportunity to show off the Newfoundland breed and kick off the holiday season! Dress up your Newf in holiday outfits and lights! This is a night time parade so be creative. The parade theme is winter/holiday. The only rule is that you can’t dress up like Santa Claus. Park-ing is conveniently located at the parade start point (Ida Lee Park). This is just a mile-long walk. Carts and wagons are welcomed and encouraged! One of our members lives on the main parade route and invited CNC parade participants to a get-together in their backyard after the parade (weather permitting)! Look for an email with more details about the parade closer to the event.

Many CNC-ers enjoy traveling to several of the wineries in the geographic area

covered by our Club. CNC mem-ber David Rothschild in particular seems to like to spearhead meet-ups of Newfoundland dogs and the people owned by them at these local wineries. One of these meet-ups was held on October 21, 2017 at Barrel Oak Winery in Virginia. Barrel Oak is located outside of Delaplane and makes over 20,000 gallons of wine per year according to its website. It is believed by this writer that this volume makes it one of the larger wineries in Virginia. Moreover, it is very dog friendly; its initials even spell out the term “BOW.” There are pictures of the owners’ dogs all over the grounds of this particular winery.

I left Williamsburg early on Sat-urday, October 21 to attend this Newfoundland get- together. The get-together was scheduled to be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, mean-ing that I arrived a few hours early. I spent the extra time checking out other local wineries and can tell you that none of them ap-peared as nice and welcoming as our host winery. I actually arrived after 2:00PM and found several Newfoundlands and their people already in attendance. A little excitement was going on when I arrived, as our intrepid group lead-er had misplaced the keys to his truck. The keys were reunited with their owner in short order.

The event itself was definitely a success. More than 10 Newfound-lands were in attendance. So were a greater number of Newfound-

land owners. Most of the owners were CNC owners that I knew. I am suspecting that those that weren’t were planning on submit-ting applications for membership. Everybody brought snacks, so food was plentiful. The dogs behaved and got along with each other for the most part.

I would recommend attending one of these winery events if one is able. David Rothschild indicat-ed that he would try to plan a few more in the future. Unfortunately, I needed to leave the event early due to a recent hip surgery. At any rate, it was an excellent event. I would personally like to thank Da-vid for spearheading this meet-up.
