Rosemary Ellen Guiley is a pioneer in the paranormal research community. She is a leading expert in the metaphysical and paranormal fields writing nine single-volume encyclopedias dedicated to these areas. Rosemary is a certified hypnotist through the International Hypnosis Federation, practices energy healing, teaches and reads tarot, a authority on shadow people, and is a huge

researcher on dreamworks.

Guiley heads her own multi-media company, Visionary Living, Inc., where she publishes an e-newsletter, Strange Dimensions. She currently serves as a board director for the National Museum of Mysteries and Research in Columbia, Pennsylvania, and is a

consulting editor of FATE magazine.

With 59 books published on a wide range of paranormal, spiritual, and mystical topics, it is no wonder why Guiley is continually asked to appear as an expert on programs on the History Channel, A&E, SyFy, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Travel channels, and at paranormal

conferences / conventions.

Chris Bailey: Hi Rosemary. Thank you so much for agreeing to talk with the Grimstone Gazette. We are really glad to have a moment to ask you, an expert in the paranormal, some questions. In your bio, you mention conducting dreamworking. Can you elaborate on that for those unfamiliar with what dreamworking is?Rosemary Guiley: Dreamwork is interpreting your dreams, which are vital to maintaining wellness in life. Dreams also have important spiritual significance. Dreams speak in symbols, and they must be understood from an intuitive perspective. They are mirrors of truth that reflect our genuine feelings, and they provide clear guidance for

choices and decisions.Bailey: How does this differ from traditional dream interpretation?Guiley: Dreamwork and dream interpretation are one and the same, just different terms. There are many techniques for interpreting dreams, both self-guided and working with groups, facilitators and therapists.Bailey: How do dreams cross into the paranormal world or don’t they? Guiley: Dreams involve the following paranormal elements: precognition and prophecy; past-life recall; out-of-body travel; visits with the dead; meetings with spirits, angels, gods, aliens and other entities; mystical experiences of God; miraculous healing; and, on the negative side, invasions by dark entities and avenues for psychic attack. Not every dream involves paranormal elements. Most dreams address daily life concerns, navigating major changes

and turning points, and spiritual growth. My new book (September 2014), "Dreamwork for Visionary Living", addresses all of these perspectives, including many paranormal ones.Bailey: That is wonderful. I cannot wait to add that to my collection of your work.In another of your recent works, “The Djinn Connection”, you focus on a different type of paranormal entity than typically discussed in the paranormal community. Not to give any spoilers to this great book, but can you tell us what are the Djinn and why should we be concerned about them?Guiley: The Djinn are involved in all

manner of paranormal trouble, and even alien abductions. The word “Djinn” – also spelled Jinn -- means “hidden ones,” and it aptly describes these crafty master shape-shifters. They are supernaturally empowered beings who share the planet with us, existing in a parallel realm. They are well-known all over the world except in the West, where their lore and mythology did not take hold except in stories of genies in bottle and lamps. Djinn, like all entities humans encounter, are not limited by geography—they are everywhere, and they account for some of our more problematic haunting and possession cases. In the West they are

often confused with poltergeists and demons.Bailey: When people think Djinn, they often think of old Middle Eastern folklore. Should that be the case? Where can Djinn be found in the modern world?Guiley: The Djinn have well-developed folklore and mythology in the Middle East, where the earliest stories about them originated. As mentioned above, they are not limited to human geography, race, culture, or country—they are everywhere, just the same as fairies are everywhere and are not limited to Celtic countries. sounds of someone walking in the station for years as well as the feeling of someone breathing down

Police getting involved in the paranormal is rare. However, one police station in Espanola, New Mexico dove head-f irst into the paranormal community by releasing a video in late September they say shows a ghost. It all started on Saturday,

September 20, 2014 when Officer Karl Romero noticed something strange on the station’s surveillance system. He said he saw what looked to be a man walking through a lot and then passing through a locked gate. After reviewing the footage with his supervisor, they were shocked to find the event was captured on video. According to police, the video shows

an apparition walking through a padlocked area. When watching the replay, you can see what looks like

You Love." This is a collaboration with John Zaffis from Haunted Collector. Can you tell us a little about this book?Guiley: Haunted By The Things You Love features some of John Zaffis’s most dramatic haunted object cases, stories about the mayhem caused by paranormally afflicted items. We discuss how and why objects can become attached by spirits, hold on to residues of the dead, and be tainted by curses, and we discuss remedies as well. John has collected haunted objects for several decades, and I frequently encounter them in my own paranormal work, too. Anything has the potential to be a haunted object: clothing, jewelry, collectibles, toys, musical instruments, furniture, knick knacks, you name it. This book will make the reader think twice about everything they own. Bailey: If people want to find out more about your books or speaking events,

Continued from page 3 have interacted with the same types of entities throughout history—we put different labels on them.Bailey: What got you started in researching the Djinn? Guiley: The Arabian Nights folk tales acquainted me with Djinn when I was a kid, and I knew them as genies. In the 1980s, I learned more about them as Djinn while researching Solomonic magic. I became seriously interested in them and their current interactions with humans when I started my Shadow People research in 2004. I concluded that Shadow People are a favorite form taken by Djinn. The Djinn to be heavily involved in all of our paranormal experiences, from mild hauntings to possessions to mysterious creatures to ET abductions. By using the IPhone’s screen and processing power, FLIR is able to reduce the cost of its thermal imaging unit to $350 USD. The FLIR One uses the same Lepton Thermal Camera as their entry level E4 unit with 4800 pixel resolution. Built in next to is a VGA camera with 640 x 480 pixel resolution. This allows the unit to use FLIR’s MSX technology which blends the thermal data over top the visible image.Installation of the unit is easy. First,

download the FLIR app free from the App Store. Snap the FLIR slim case onto the IPhone 5 or 5S. Align the FLIR unit so that the actuator tab is against the Apple logo opening on the slim case. Then slide the phone down so it clicks into the unit. Launch the app. Move the FLIR mode switch to the middle position. The LED indicator will flash green. When prompted, pull the mode switch down fully and hold it for 3 seconds to calibrate. You can then capture images as pictures or videos. The FLIR One has a variety of

The small instructions manual inform first time users that it helps people see at night and measure temperature. It also warns that it won’t help you “cure the common cold” or “communicate with the departed”.

Thermal Imaging is often considered the Holy Grail of paranormal investigating equipment. However, most investigators are self-funded and do not have the immediate ability to acquire such instrumentation. The FLIR One may change this.At the end of July, FLIR launched its

tombstones kept the ground heat much better. They were 5C warmer than the surrounding ground cover. While investigating inside, you could see how heat is reflected off glass surfaces. You could also see lingering heat from hand or foot prints.Overall, the FLIR One delivers.

It is an affordable alternative to stand alone units. It has its quirks, but places thermal imaging into investigator ’s hands at a decent price point. because as a phone case, it is constantly with you. It is very easy to use. However, it is far from perfect. The app is slow to link with the case and calibrate. Due to this, do not expect to take the fast candid shot. You will need to have it on-ready in case an apparition appears. For doing spot measurements, it looks to recalibrate often sometimes asking you to do so every minute. While the IPhone 5 uses the 8-pin Lightning cable to charge, the FLIR One uses a micro USB. Thus, you need two chargers. You cannot charge your phone while the FLIR One is connected. It would have been ideal if in charging the FLIR unit, it charged the IPhone as well. The Gazette had the pleasure

though of utilizing the FLIR One both at an indoor site and at a haunted cemetery. During the investigations, we were not able to detect any abnormal or paranormal temperature anomalies, but we did see the world in a very different way. First at the cemetery, we noticed that the

Each is a separate app and can be used independently. While the basic app allows temperature readings up to 212F, some apps like Close Up do not have that restriction and measure over 300F. offer Public and Private Ghost Hunts for them, along with the Old Mill ParaFest convention. We also put on the Paranormal Picnic each year, part of our love for getting other groups together. We love hosting events! What kind of services do you offer clients? We will investigate, with or without the psychic we work with. We also have worked with the psychic for doing cleansings. Our main focus is investigations but anything we can do to help. What areas do you serve? Mainly Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio, though we have traveled to Northern Michigan to help a family as well. Each case is different. How much do you charge for your services? Our services are always free. We feel, helping people with paranormal issues,

there should never be a fee. We don't even charge for our events which cost us money, like the picnic, etc.How can people best contact your organization? The best way is through our website, www.michiganghost.com by fil l ing out the form. It 's easier to get an e-mail than a phone call with our strange hours. What is your investigation style? We're professional, but we have fun while doing it. What is the strangest thing (paranormal or not) that has ever happened during an investigation? Wow, that's tough. Probably being held hostage by a couple bats flying around while investigating the Madison Seminary in Madison, Ohio. Where is the most haunted place you have visited? Continued on page 8

Each year hundreds of new paranormal investigative teams form. There are currently over one hundred ghost hunting groups in Michigan alone. Whether you are a homeowner looking for help or a paranormal enthusiast looking to join a group, it can be tough to find the right fit. This is why the Grimstone Gazette is dedicated to showcasing what the paranormal community has to offer you. Stay tuned for each issue as we will be spotlighting a different team each season. This issue will showcase Spirit World Paranormal Investigations (SWPI)

from south-east Michigan!

Name: Tim RehahnWhat paranormal investigation group do you belong to? Spirit World Paranormal Investigations, or SWPI.What is your title/role in the group and how long have you been with them? We don't really have titles, but I have always been in charge of the Tech, and for the last 2 years I have been running the group. How did your group start? Long story, but we originally were members of several groups, investigating together under another group's name. When the founder of that group decided she was leaving, we couldn't use that name - it was hers, so we just chose one of the groups and went with that name to ease confusion. SWPI it was! What is the goal/mission of your team? Our goal is and has always been to help people with their paranormal issues. If we can not help them, we lead them to someone who can. In addition to homeowners or business owners contacting us for help, we also aim to help The Old Mill Museum in Dundee, MI with fundraisers. We volunteer to

Continued from page 7We've been to some very haunted places - Mansfield Prison (OSR), Bissman Building, Prospect Place, Twin City Opera House, even the Byrn Du Mansion was cool. My personal favorites are a local cemetery near Monroe we were asked to investigate, and a few nights at The Old Mill Museum when the activity level was off the hook! What do you think is your most useful piece of equipment? My personal favorite is the Mel Meter. Many pieces of equipment in one - so much easier than carrying a bunch of pieces with you.How do you feel about Spirit / Frank Boxes? I'm mixed on this. While we may never know for sure if they really can manipulate the device to speak, there are times when the answers are very clear and relevant to the situation. What is your feeling on provoking? We try never to provoke. We feel that spirits were people too, and we treat them how we'd like to be treated. That being said, we've had investigations where serious activity has happened and when we didn't seem to get much, we'd provoked a little to get responses. What is the best piece of evidence you have collected? Can you share it with our subscribers? If so, where can they find it? My personal favorite, which is also one I hated getting, is an EVP. During our walkthrough, one of our members saw a bloody leg flip out of the tub, and our psychic had noted in her notes how the home appeared to be once used for abortions, illegally - young girls, underage whore house, very violent. During our investigation it was really quiet, and we all went downstairs. I left a recorder going on the dresser of the client, which was just outside the room that it was seen in. Not long after, you hear a girl being attacked, which goes

on for a few minutes. So real it was almost as if it was happening up there right then. In the end she screams, “GET OUT!” and you hear a deep raspy demonic-sounding voice reply, “Get out, you whore.”Every person in the paranormal community has a personal reason for their pursuit. Why are you paranormal investigating? I started to see if there really is something paranormal. I was skeptic, but we had things happening we couldn't explain. When I had no explanation, I thought I'd look into it. Being open-minded, I approached it to see whether or not I get evidence, not having an opinion on whether it was real or not. It didn't take long to get an EVP saying "Hello" when there were only two of us present. We never heard it. From then on it became trying to find out what it is we hear and see. Is it a time warp? Is it another dimension? Is it paranormal, and if it's ghosts, are they really trapped here? Can they come and go as they please? So many questions, I hope to find answers one day.Are there any tips you can give to people wishing to start paranormal investigating? Yes. Do not go out on your own! Join a team if possible, which has been in the field for awhile. It's important that people learn from someone experienced, so they don't form bad habits which are tough to break later. Does your group have any upcoming trips to infamous haunted locations? In July we went to the SS City of Milwaukee and USS Acacia in Manistee, with John Zaffis, Dustin Pari and two of the Deep South Paranormal crew. We will also be doing the USS Edson in Bay City soon, and we're hosting The Old Mill ParaFest convention/ghost hunt.Do you have any upcoming events? The Old Mill ParaFest in Dundee, Michigan which will be held on November 8, 2014. Doors open at

Many people who live or have lived in Dundee, or in Monroe County for that matter, are familiar with the Old Mill Museum building. The vast majority of the people who drive by probably have no idea what the history of the building is, or that they offer free museum tours - I certainly didn't for many years! The fact is, the building, and land that it's on, has a rich history. In writing a series of three articles, I will inform you not only of some history, but a fun and unknown fact that many local residents and paranormal TV personalities probably don't even know. I'll talk more about that later; here is a brief history, for those who don't know. It was built in 1849 as the Grist Mill,

and later in 1910 it was owned by Dundee Hydraulic Power Co. In fact, the original generator still sits inside the museum today! In the early 1920s, rumor has it that local men were bootlegging - running booze to and from Canada. From 1924 until

otherwise known as SWPI, was one of three teams to visit the mill back in mid 2010, and suggest opening the museum to public and private ghost hunts. While all three teams suggested the ghost hunts due to the experiences and evidence captured, SWPI was chosen to host these investigations. Now in 2014, almost four years later,

SWPI members still volunteer to host these events in the Old Mill Museum throughout the year, as a fundraiser for the museum. Many people who have visited the museum have returned multiple times due to the experiences and evidence they were able to obtain, as well as the very reasonable price to investigate of $37. Tickets can be purchased from the website, www.haunteddundeemill.com, for those interested. There are many different claims and

experiences from people who visit the Old Mill Museum. There have been reports of bells on the door ringing, the organ playing, sounds being heard, figures moving around, equipment malfunctioning, batteries draining and recordings of unknown voices being captured on EVP's. EVP's, which stands for Electronic Voice

1931 the building was abandoned, and later ordered to be torn down by the village, only to find it had a new and somewhat well-known owner – Henry Ford. Yes, that Henry Ford, of Ford Motor Company. Henry mined the limestone from the river to add on much of the building you see from M50. From 1954 to 1970, Wolverine Manufacturing owned it, and in 1970 the village got the building for the low price of $1. It was an ambulance building from 1970-1979 before becoming the museum in 1986.Though it has more history than

that, and really is a historic gem in Dundee, sadly, many will never experience it because they simply choose not to stop. I invite you to stop by, visit the building during the day, and if you're brave enough to do so, at night! Mu ha ha ha ha! Yes, I said at night! No, the museum does not offer night hours, but one local paranormal group, Spirit World Paranormal Investigations,

Locked in a protected box with a sign reading “Warning, Positively do not open” sits a mysterious doll. She has bright red yarn hair, an innocent triangle nose and a sweet smile. From the outside, she appears to be just a run-of-the-mill Raggedy Ann doll, but as you continue to stare through the glass case into her perfectly round black and white eyes you surely will start to notice that something is off about this

doll. You might get the eerie feeling like someone is watching you or you may even see her give you a quick nod. Her name is Annabelle and she is not like other dolls. Challenge or taunt her and you will wish you had not. Annabelle’s story begins in 1970 when

a mother purchased the doll as a gift for her daughter, Donna. Donna brings the doll home to an apartment she shares

with a fellow nursing student, Angie. A reminder of home and a token of love from her Mom, the doll brings Donna great comfort…at least for a little while. Before long the two start to notice

the doll seemingly being in a different position then when they had left it. Donna recounts, “I put it on my bed each morning after the bed was made. The arms would be off to its sides and its legs would be straight out…but when we’d come home at night, the arms and legs would be positioned in different gestures. For instance, its legs would be crossed at the ankles, or its arms would be folded in its lap. After a week or so, this made us suspicious. So to test it, I purposely crossed its arms and legs in the morning to see if it really was moving. And sure enough, every night when we’d come back home, the arms and legs would be uncrossed and the thing would be sitting there in any of a dozen different postures” (5).These events continued for weeks

more and the women continued to blow it off attributing the movements to a draft or jostling of the bed. Things changed when one night the women came home to find the rag doll standing upright and leaning against a chair in the dining room (5); they were sure they had left the doll in the bedroom. Day by day the movements became

more and more noticeable. Angie recalls, “We came home one night and the Annabelle doll was sitting in a chair by the front door. It was kneeling! The funny thing about it was, when we tried to make the doll kneel, it’d just fall over. It couldn't kneel. Other times we’d find it sitting on the sofa, although when we left the apartment in the morning it’d be in Donna’s room with the door closed!” (5)

Thinking someone must be playing a trick on them, the two began to stage the scene each day by marking the position of the rug and curtains with chalk. This way they could determine if an intruder had opened the door

or come in through a window. Their efforts left them with no signs of a hoaxer. Again, they were left with more questions than answers. It was then when they confided in a

friend named Lou about the events. Lou had a bad gut feeling about the rag doll and suggested that the girls get rid of it. However, curiosity took over for the women and they decided to disregard the advice.A couple months into their

experiences, Donna and Angie began to find messages left throughout the apartment. Written in pencil on parchment paper they read "Help Us", "Help Me", and "Help Lou". As if the letters weren’t odd enough, Donna says, “The thing that was weird was that the notes would be written in pencil, but when we tried to find one, there was not one pencil in the apartment! And the paper it wrote on was parchment. I tore the apartment apart, looking for parchment paper, but again neither of us had any such thing” (5).The events seem to escalate from

there. Objects in the home would move on their own and the doll took on an ominous vibe. One night the toy once again managed to make its way into Donna’s bedroom on its own. When Donna discovered the doll, she noticed something terrifying. She screamed for Angie to come into the room. Angie describes what they found on the rag doll: There was blood on the back of its hand, and there were three drops of blood on its chest!” (5). This prompted the women to call a

medium. “We learned that a little girl died on this property. She was seven years old and her name was Annabelle Higgins. The Annabelle spirit said she played in the fields long ago before these apartments were built. They were happy times for her.”, Donna said (5). The spirit told the medium that she felt safe with the nurses and wanted to stay with them. Feeling compassionate for the lonely

girl, the two decided to let the spirit

occupy the Raggedy Ann doll and share the apartment with them.“It seemed harmless enough.”, Angie explained (5). “We’re nurses, you know. We see suffering every day. We had compassion. Anyway, we called the doll Annabelle from that time on.” (5). After learning of Annabelle’s

troubling story, Donna and Angie worked hard to include the girl in their life despite Lou’s continual disapproval; he felt the doll was evil. They began sleeping with it and even eating with it. One morning the doll sat quietly as the girls enjoyed their breakfast. Suddenly Annabelle’s arms moved up and rested on the table (2). This alarmed the two, but again they quickly moved on. Annabelle grew unpleased

with Lou’s repeated attempts to skew the loving women’s views of her. Fearing he would come between them, she needed to get rid of the interference. After pleading with the girls once more to send the doll away, Lou returned to his home to get some rest as he had a tripped plan in just a couple days. Late at night and deep in sleep, he suddenly awoke in a panic. He was having one of his reoccurring nightmares, but this time it was different. This time he seemed to be awake, but

couldn’t move. “While I was lying there, I saw myself wake up. Something seemed wrong to me.”, Lou said (5). “I looked around the room, but nothing was out of place. But then when I looked down toward my feet, I saw the rag doll, Annabelle. It was slowly gliding up my body. It moved over my chest and stopped. Than it put its arms out. One arm touched one side of my neck, the other touched the other side like it was making an electrical connection. Then I saw myself being

strangled. I might as well have been pushing on a wall, because it wouldn't move. It was literally strangling me to death, I couldn't help myself, no matter how hard I tried” (5).Lou claimed to then have blacked out.

He awoke the next morning insisting that this was no dream. He was now more determined than ever to get rid of the dangerous doll. The next evening he went to the

apartment to plan for a road trip Lou and Angie were going on. As they were reading over maps they heard some noises coming from Donna’s room (3). Donna was not home at the time. Fearing someone had broken into the apartment, Lou went to check out the bedroom. He found the room empty except for Annabelle who looked like she had been carelessly tossed on the floor. of blood, plus the gestures the doll made are all meaningful. They tell me there was intent, which means there was an intelligence behind the activity. But ghosts, human spirits, plain and simply can’t bring on phenomena of this nature and intensity. They don’t have the power” (5). Instead, the Warren’s believed the Raggedy Ann doll was possessed by a demon posing to be a six-year-old girl. The famous demonologists had

Father Cooke perform an exorcism blessing on the doll and cleanse the apartment. Then, much to the satisfaction of the traumatized trio, the Warren’s took Annabelle out of the apartment. Lorraine states, “I didn't want them to keep the doll

as though someone or something was behind him. He quickly spun around and was surprised to find nothing. Then he felt sharp pains across his chest. There was blood soaking through his shirt as if he had been cut. Upon inspection he found seven distinct claw marks - four horizontal and three vertical (5). They burned terribly and seemed to radiate heat. Even stranger, the marks quickly vanished in fewer than two days. Now terrified of Annabelle’s

capabilities, the trio decided to reach out to Father Hegan, an Episcopalian priest, for help. Hegan did not feel qualified to handle the case so he

called in Father Cooke. Cooke then contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren. Famous demonologists, the Warrens were involved in several high profile cases like the Amityville Horror investigation and the case involving the Perron family that inspired the movie, The Conjuring. After interviewing Donna, Angie,

and Lou and analyzing the doll, the Warren’s believed the spirit of Annabelle did not exist. Ed explained to the trio, ”There is no Annabelle! There never was. You were duped. However, we are dealing with a spirit here. The teleportation of the doll while you were out of the apartment, the appearance of notes written on parchment, the manifestation of three symbolic drops

showing up in different rooms of their house. In one account, they left the doll locked inside an outer office building. When they returned home, Annabelle was sitting comfortably in Ed’s chair (3). Tragedy hit when Father Jason

Bardford came to the Warren house to consult on another case. It is reported that when Bradford saw the rag doll he passively picked it up and said, “You're just a rag-doll Annabelle, you can't hurt anyone.”, as he tossed it off to the side (3). Worried of the consequences of his actions, Lorraine insisted he take extra caution when driving home. Several hours later the priest called to say he had been in a terrible accident (3). The near-fatal wreck totaled his car. It served as a warning to all not to test the malevolent doll. Unfortunately, not all would heed to the warning. Due to the reoccurring activity in

the home, Lorraine and Ed felt the doll was too dangerous to remain unobstructed. They built a protective case to keep the rag doll in. Deep in the basement of a quaint

house in Monroe, CT, Annabelle sits incarcerated in this very case today. She and hundreds of other cursed objects attract thousands of visitors a year to the Warren’s Occult Museum. Since 1952, the museum, located inside the Warren’s house is home to the largest collection of obscure and haunted artifacts (1, 4). Ed warns Annabelle is, “The worst thing we have in the whole museum.” (2).Though Annabelle is locked

up, it does not prevent her from occasionally causing terror to visitors of the odd museum. It is reported that one visitor heard the story of the Raggedy Ann doll and challenged it to scratch him like it did Lou. The young prankster repeatedly tapped on the glass while antagonizing the evil toy. Ed, who was giving the

tour, immediately asked the man and his girlfriend to leave. While driving home he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed head on into a tree. The man died instantly and the girlfriend spent over a year in the hospital (4). The girlfriend later said they were laughing about the doll when her boyfriend suddenly lost control of the motorcycle (4). REFERENCES:

plagued with car troubles. According to the Warren’s, whenever there was a sharp curve their engine would stall causing the power steering and brakes to fail. Lorraine said it was the worst car ride she has ever had (1). Fed up with Annabelle’s behavior, Ed turned the car off and doused the doll with holy water in the shape of a cross. All of the car troubles stopped and the remaining trip was uneventful. When home, Ed placed the blessed

So you decided to start investigating the paranormal? The first thing that you want to do is go out there and find all of the haunted places and witness all of the amazing paranormal activity that you see on TV, right? Well, you may be surprised to find out that not every case that you investigate provides the thrill ride that you are seeking. In fact, many of the cases and the clients that you work with many seem decidedly un-paranormal. You may even spend a few very relaxing evenings in some locations reported to have wild and intense paranormal activity. Other locations may give you the creeps and horrify you for a variety of reasons, the least of which being the alleged resident ghosts and/or demon monster shadow men that the client described as escalating in activity during the initial phone interview. So what happened? Did you miss all

of the action?

Of course you came out to see the client as fast as you could. That’s your job as a paranormal investigator to respond to your client and try to provide comfort, solace, answers, explanations, documented evidence of paranormal activity, and often times just to lend an ear to a client that will happily stay up all night with you sharing his/her life story in every graphic detail for as long as you let him/her. But, wait a minute! That’s not how it happens on the paranormal TV shows, right? Paranormal activity is real and happening all around us, or at least that’s what it seemed like when you amped up on energy drinks, loaded up your trifield meter, and drove for 3 hours to the client’s location to spend a pretty quiet night listening to ghost stories that sound like everything that you’ve ever heard on the last 9 years of paranormal TV.So it’s now 4:00 AM, and you’re

probably just a little tired, aggravated,

and disappointed to make the understatement of the year. So do you hastily go over your evidence, type up a bland investigation report, and just write off your client forever in pursuit of some real paranormal thrills and chills? Hold on, cowboy. Let’s take another look. What is a Haunting? When you walked into the location,

what were you really expecting to find? Plates flying out of the cupboards, demonic disembodied voices, contortionist teenage girls in long white nightgowns climbing the walls and spewing acid ectoplasmic vomit? Yeah, well, me too, and I’m still looking. If I could find one investigation that played out like The Conjuring, I’d be ready to happily retire from this paranormal gig, and go back to video gaming in my spare nights. Chasing the biggest, baddest paranormal activity is what we do in this game. Like Fox Mulder we just say, “I Want to Believe,” and that’s what fuels the pursuit of that ever-elusive paranormal activity. We’ve all seen what Hollywood calls

a 'haunting', but I wonder how many of us have actually witnessed what a real haunting looks like. If we consider a haunting to be something intelligent and more than just a supernatural sound and light show, then we have to consider the possibility that these complex, rational beings simply don’t just come out on command. Perhaps they are just as fickle, sophisticated, and temperamental as that eccentric kid that you sat next to in junior year English Literature class. Well, maybe they’re not that neurotic, but have some preternatural sense of humor that we just don’t get. It’s possible. Welcome to the esoteric world of paranormal investigation. No, really, what is a haunting? If you

can answer this question for me, I’d gladly bring you up on stage, shake your hand, and proclaim you as an honorary doctorate from Grimstone University because I’m still looking. So we’ve established that not many of us have

really experienced an actual haunting. It could be the most exhilarating and transcendent acid trip down the nine levels of Hell on a hop, skip, and a jump through the multiverse, or… maybe it’s the most mundane, benign thing that you could ever imagine this side of matching your gym socks while watching reruns of Taxi. Yeah, that actually happened. Whatever it is, you’ve probably recorded somewhere between 4 to 8 hours of evidence during your investigation that, as a diligent paranormal investigator, you have to dutifully review and diagnose to fulfill your obligation to your client.Evidence ReviewChances are, regardless of your

experience on the investigation, that you’ll find something even passably remarkable during the review of your evidence. Weird stuff happens on paranormal investigations. Did somebody bump and jar the camera during the night, why did the camera batteries keep dying, was that really a K2 hit, and was that really a voice on the digital recorder or just your partner’s wheezy asthma breathing feeding back into the microphone? Whether it’s paranormal or not, we always learn something from reviewing evidence. It’s part of perfecting the craft. No, it’s not as exciting as what we thought it would be when we signed up, but it’s the job. It’s a fun job, but it’s still a job.Much of the time we end up with a few

pieces of evidence that are interesting. They’re not necessarily paranormal, but they are interesting and we do learn things every time. Often times we must second-guess ourselves as to what we captured being normal or perhaps having a paranormal origin. To be objective and to avoid embarrassment amongst the cool paranormal investigator kids, we usually have to pick the natural option when describing a particular phenomenon. The good thing about evidence from a paranormal investigation is that it’s there forever to review and to ponder. Feelings fade, the odors from your client’s basement

wash out of your clothes, but audio and video evidence will remain, providing that you did remember to push 'record' before starting the investigation. Even false positives have their place. Newbies need training, and it’s always fun to laugh at the “other guys" when another paranormal team holds up an image of a moth’s infrared reflection in a mirror as groundbreaking, insurmountable proof of the demonic. You just spent the better part of the

night reviewing evidence, and the other part social networking with your teammates and making the magic that

is inside humor. When it’s time to turn off the monitors and say, “That’s all she wrote,” you have to finally compare notes and put together a client report. So what do you say?The DiagnosisThis is the last page of the novel.

It’s tempting for an anxious client to skip to the last page and read the diagnosis. Clients may very well not care how many full spectrum cameras you set up during the investigation, how sophisticated your audio review software is, Continued on page 18

of objects levitating or Slimer devouring last night’s pot roast, our job would be easy. Unfortunately we’re often left with more questions than answers. What if a ghost could appear just

like a fog or a mist? What if spirits can communicate through our minds in ways that no audio, video, or EMF device can detect? What if 'personal demons' like depression, addiction, and domestic abuse were really the results of genuine demonic activity and could not just easily be dismissed as 'personal problems?'Ask me what a ghost looks like, and I’ll

tell you. I don’t know. I will tell you that I’ve spent at least the last five years of my life researching and spending my nights all across the state trying to find out. Probably the weekend before this article comes out I’ll be on another case doing my very best to sort fact from fiction and hoping, just hoping, that at least one of the client’s paranormal claims provides some sort of tangible evidence for my team.So for me to declare any property

“not haunted” means that I understand fully what a true haunting is. I don’t. I’d venture that most of the paranormal groups across the U.S.A. don’t really have a good answer for it either. I’ll know a ghost when I see one, but, until I

do, I’m going to just state the facts. “The evidence collected does not support a haunting,” is the best that I can offer to any client who is looking for answers to phenomena that just doesn’t pan out during the investigation. I’m not going to call anybody a liar. It’s difficult sometimes to set one’s private opinions of someone’s personal situation aside, but that’s what professionals do. They let the evidence speak for itself. So why do we investigate in the first

place? We learn something every time. Sometimes we find out things that we’d never even imagine or step into someone’s life and experience what it is to walk in their shoes. Life teaches us lessons beyond what we bargained for when we first watched a ghost hunting show and said, “I’m going to do what those guys do.” I can tell you that after years of investigating the paranormal that I’m a much better investigator for all of the times that I haven't captured paranormal activity, but spotted a popular technical misconception that others mistake for evidence. Learning to listen critically to others and to try to understand their predicaments has made me a better, less credulous person who can appreciate what it is to live for the hunt whether the location is haunted or not haunted.

Continued from page 17 or your pet theories on how to discern intelligent communication from flashlight interactions during EVP sessions, but they do want to know if you think that their place is haunted. What you say in the report and how you say it is very important. For most of us investigation is a

volunteer hobby with essentially a negative financial incentive after you deduct equipment costs, fuel, and damage to our family and social lives. However, we always have to bear in mind that our clients do open their properties, and often their homes, to us for use. We’re complete strangers brought into a very personal and often chaotic part of their lives. Sure, there are often ulterior motives at work, but we still find ourselves getting to know a lot more about our clients than we ever bargained for.I hope that everything in this article

up to this point has convinced you that there’s a lot more uncertainty in this field than certainty. The last thing that a client wants you to do is to shrug your shoulders, but we have to read them the best verdict that our technology and our experience with it will allow. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, if it was as simple as recording footage

One of my favorite things about paranormal investigation is all the great gear we get to use. From electronic gadgets to the less conventional ghost hunting tools, there is always something new to add to your investigations. On the other hand, there are many locations where “less is more” seems to make more sense. Even in a larger setting when there are a lot of cameras and equipment in use, it can be beneficial for an investigator to have a small bag of on-the-spot tools. For the sake of this article, I have shown my investigation bag in its most scaled-down form, which I have found to be my favorite if only for the ease of finding what I’m looking for when I’m looking for it. Nobody wants to dig for their camera when confronted with a full-bodied apparition or miss an EVP because you can’t find your voice recorder. This being said, here’s the break-down of what I keep in my bag and why. 1. LED Headlamp Almost all of the investigations I have

been on have been in the dark, so having a light is essential. Additionally, there are multiple tasks required of investigators at any given time, and usually, all of them need to be done in the dark. This makes having a hands-free light a huge benefit. I would rather give up anything else in my bag before I gave up my headlamp.2. Digital CameraTaking photographs has been a part

of paranormal investigation almost as long as photography has been around. It’s a great way to collect evidence and document the investigation site. From taking a reference photo of a room for an investigation log to documenting architectural details, the camera has proven to be one of the most important tools in an investigator's arsenal. I prefer digital over traditional film cameras simply for the ease of viewing evidence immediately without developing film. Switching from still to video quickly on one device is also an

added bonus.3. EMF DetectorIt has been a continuing theme

in paranormal research that electromagnetic fields seem to surround paranormal activity. With this in mind, it seems logical that every researcher should have an EMF detector on hand at all times. However, communicating with or detecting ghosts isn’t where it stops for this tool. Electromagnetic fields can also be created by household appliances and wiring and can even create what researchers have come to call a “fear box”. This phenomena has been linked to unusual and often irrational fear or paranoia in people living or working in a fear box-type environment. The EMF detector pictured is the new Grimstone Inc. 3M tri-field meter. As I stated above, hands-free investigation tools can be a great help to researchers and the 3M is just that; no more putting down the K2 to take a picture. In addition,

the tri-field nature of the 3M removes positioning from the equation. It will take the same reading right-side-up, sideways, or upside down. 4. Voice RecorderEVP, or electronic voice phenomenon,

plays a large role in evidence collection for everyone from amateur investigators all the way up to the professionals. Voice recording can be one of the easiest tactics for researchers to execute and has resulted in what I find to be (at times) very compelling evidence. Again, this one can go digital or analog and I like using both for different reasons. Going with a digital voice recorder can save on space in your bag and can cut down on things like tape hiss in your recordings. Going with an old-fashioned tape recorder can be great too. Something about the tangible nature of the tape itself makes some researchers think it could be easier for spirits to imprint their voices onto it. 5. Notebook and Pen Continued on page 20

in your investigation pack. Batteries can be fickle and unpredictable sometimes. Some researchers even believe ghosts can drain batteries to help power themselves. Having a flashlight go out partway through an investigation can be crippling and dangerous to the researcher. You could opt for extra batteries instead of having an additional light, but I like to have a spare that I can loan to others. I also keep an extra light around for the “flashlight trick” investigation method. This, if you don’t already know, is where you use a mostly unscrewed flashlight to communicate with the spirits by asking them to turn it on and off when prompted. This is just one of many possible

setups an investigator can use. My bag is always changing as I upgrade or swap out tools. Some locations could call for a parabolic ear for long range listening. Some could require motion detectors or a laser grid. A small first-aid kit is always a smart thing to have in a bag too, just in case. In some cases you don’t even have to have bag. Tactical vests and utility belt packs with a lot of compartments can hold pretty much everything you need. The more hands-free or accessible the equipment is, the quicker you can get that photo or EVP. The more convenient it is to use your gear, the more fun it will be to use.

Continued from page 19 When interviewing witnesses on

location, taking notes is a must. It can be a great way to check for inconsistencies in stories and compare evidence with claims. I also keep this one with me when I’m out doing historical research. Being able to quickly reference historical information on site can really add to an investigation. Having a place to write down time-stamps from video can be very helpful as well. It can show investigators where to look a little closer during the evidence review. 6. Digital MultimeterMany claims of paranormal activity

include occurrences of appliances turning on or off and lightbulbs dimming or burning out. These, in my opinion, are mostly caused by electrical problems in the location. This digital multimeter can help to eliminate these factors by checking the outlets on site. In my experience, eliminating what isn’t paranormal can sometimes illuminate the things that can’t be explained. 7. Work GlovesThese might seem out of place in

a paranormal investigation bag, but when you need them and don't have them, you'll understand. Sometimes being a paranormal researcher means going into some old and

sometimes filthy places - basements, barns, attics, and even a prison or sanitarium. In these situations a nice pair of reinforced gloves can save an investigator from rusty nails and wood splinters. I’ve also been on plenty of investigations where wild animals are present and in uncomfortably close proximity to the team. Bats, raccoons, rats and mice are all common in some of these older locations and they can all carry diseases such as rabies or distemper. Having an extra layer of protection on your hands could literally be a lifesaver. 8. Multi-toolThere have been countless reports

to (and from) paranormal researchers about doors and cabinets swinging open on their own or windows slamming shut in the night. Although these can be linked to a strong breeze, an un-level floor, or even actual paranormal activity, sometimes the hinges just need to be tightened. It isn’t uncommon that we as investigators have to become the handyman (or woman) to put our clients at ease. Telling someone that they have a dripping pipe, a loose hinge and creaking floorboard is a lot easier than telling someone you think they have a ghost in their home. 9. Extra FlashlightI know this is redundant, but this is

the kind of redundancy that you want

The Ouija board has been around for over 123 years. When the first ads started to appear for the “Wonderful Talking Board” in February 1891, it promised to be a magical device that answered questions "about the past, present and future with marvelous accuracy" (1, 2). We have all heard the ghost stories

warning us of what the repercussions can be of using a Ouija board; possession, demonic interactions, and a doorway to the dead are all common reports. In fact, today the Ouija Board is considered taboo for most people in the paranormal community. But can this mysterious device force a person to commit murder? The excuse, "The Ouija board made me

do it.”, has been used in the court of law since the product hit the shelves in the late 19th century. In 1930, newspapers told the story of two Seneca Indian women from Buffalo, NY who carried out a plot to kill a women because the Ouija board said she was a witch.

During the Fall of 1929, Nancy Bowen, a tribal healer, and Lila Jimerson, a school employee for the Cattaraugus Reservation, used a Ouija Board looking for answers to the recent death of Bowen’s husband, Charlie Bowen (3). The board seemed to be communicating with Charlie who declared, “they killed me.” (3). The women then asked who killed him

to which Charlie replied, “Clothilde.” He then, letter-by-letter, spelled out the killer’s address on Riley Street (3). To the women’s amazement it did not end there; the Ouija board continued to move, now giving a physical description of the murderer. It described a short women with missing teeth and bobbed hair (3). Jimerson immediately recognized the accused as Clothilde Marchard. Following the Ouija board incident,

Bowen started to receive letters from a “Mrs. Dooley”, stating Clothilde cursed Charlie. One letter states, Continued on page 22

Pictured above is one of the first Ouija boards. The toy reportedly got its name from the board itself. When the makers asked it what they should call it, it responded "Ouija." When asked what that meant, it replied "Good luck." On July 30, 1890, a patent for the Ouija board was originally denied by the United States Patent Office because they required testing to be completed first. A patent was soon

granted because tests proved the board did as it claimed. Photo courtesy of Smithsonianmag.com

Continued from page 21 "Her witchcraft didn't work so good so she decided to kill him” (3). Bowen became convinced that the toothless women did in fact kill her husband and feared she was next.On March 7, 1930, Bowen went to

the Marchard household to accuse Clothilde of being a witch (3). She then pulled a hammer out and beat the women unconscious. Bowen ensured her victims death by stuffing chloroform-soaked paper down her throat (3). Learning neighbors had seen a

Native American women canvasing the Marchard home earlier in the day, police questioned Henri Marchard as to who might have reason to harm his wife. Henri immediately gave up the name Lila Jimerson. He stated that Jimerson was one of his models while working at the Reservation creating Iroquois dioramas for the State Museum in Albany, NY (3). 36-year-old Jimerson and 66-year-

old Bowen were quickly taken into custody. Love letters sent to Jimerson from Henri later proved that the two were lovers providing a motive to the crime. Police told the press they believed Bowen was manipulated by Jimerson, a scorned lover, to commit the heinous crime so she could pursue a romance with Henri. Compelled by supernatural forces of the Ouija board, Bowen testified she tried to kill Clothilde with hexes but finally resorted to the hammer and chloroform. The Ouija board hit the newsstands

again in 1933, when a young girl killed her father because the “Wonderful Talking Board” told her to. 15-year-old Mattie Turley and her mother, Dorothea Turley, frequently used the toy as a way to pass time on their ranch in Prescott, Arizona. One night the messages from beyond

turned grim when the Ouija board instructed Mattie, in great detail, to kill her father, Ernest J. Turley. Mattie testified that her “mother asked the Ouija board to decide between father

and her cowboy friend. As usual, the board moved around at first without meaning but suddenly it spelled out that I was to kill father. It was terrible. I shook all over. Mother asked the Ouija board if the shooting would be successful, and it said that it would. She asked if he would die outright, and it said no. We asked what should be used in the shooting, and it said a shotgun. We asked if we would have the ranch, and it said yes. We asked about the law, and it said not to fear the law, that everything would turn out all right. We asked how much the insurance would be, and it said five thousand dollars. I tried to kill Father the next day but I couldn’t. I lost my nerve. A few days later, though, I followed him to the corral. I raised the gun and took careful aim between the shoulders, but then I lost my nerve again. But I thought

of dear mother and what all this would mean to her. I couldn’t fail. My hand was trembling awfully, but I raised the gun and fired.” (4)

Mattie shot her father on November 18, 1933. He later died from his wounds at a Naval-based hospital in San Diego, CA on December 26, 1933 (5). As for the Ouija’s predictions of how the law would hand them, Mattie served 6 years in the Arizona State Industrial School (4). Her mother was originally sentenced to 10-25 years in prison, but was later set free after her conviction was overturned by an appeal in 1936 (6). The Ouija board got it half right. The magical board struck again in

1995 and 2007 when the powers of the device caused 2 people believing they were communicating with Satan to kill. On December 2, 1995, 20-year-old David McCallum stabbed a 15-year-old boy 11 times as he begged for mercy in a Walworth, South London apartment. McCallum asked the board “If you are Satan, what is it you want me to do?” to which the board replied “kill” prompting him to stab the innocent boy to death (7). McCallum was later placed indefinitely in an institute for the criminally insane (8). Another savage stabbing occurred

in West Richland, Washington on December 19, 2007, when two boys took to the Ouija board to again communicate with Satan. According to defense attorney Norma Rodriguez, 15-year-old Don Schalchlin and 16-year-old Joshua Tuckers asked a Ouija board if they would be serial killers and who would be first (9). "The board responded that 'mom' would be the person that would be killed," she said (9). The boys continued to communicate

with the board until Joshua abruptly got up to carry out the board's instructions. He lunged at Don’s 13-year-old sister, Elizabeth Schalchlin, as she innocently talked on the phone with a friend (10). Elizabeth died in her home from a single stab wound to the throat. The two boys then dragged the young girls’ body to another room.

Nancy Bowen was accused of tricking another member of the Seneca Indian tribe to kill using a Ouija board. Soon after, Ellen Schalchlin walked into the room and she too was attacked by Joshua. She managed to escape briefly and call for help, but ultimately was found again where the brutal attack continued. Don’s 41-year-old mother died on the way to the hospital and the Ouija board’s deeds were carried out again. Rodriguez states, “Donald maintains

that he believes that Tucker was moving the board. In an interview with Tucker,

he believes Donald was moving the board” (9). The boys were quickly found covered in blood in a getaway car (10). Both were found guilty of murder. Six years earlier a 53-year-old

women in Chickasha, Oklahoma with no criminal record, domestic abuse incidents, or history of mental illness or odd behavior went on a killing spree (11). No signs of alcohol or drugs were found in the home. With the usual suspects ruled out, what could have caused a relatively stable women to go on a rampage attempting to kill her own family? On the night of February 11, 2001,

Carol Sue Elvaker, her 34-year-old daughter, and 2 granddaughters sat in the living room and played with a Ouija board. Suddenly, Elvaker claimed that God sent her a message via the Ouija that her son-in-law Brian Roach was evil and needed to be killed (12). She then walked into the bedroom where the 34-year-old slept to deliver “God’s” instructions. As Roach pleaded for help Elvaker

turned her attention to her 10-year-old granddaughter and tried to choke her to death (11). According to Brett Burns, district attorney for Grady County, "She thought the 10-year-old was evil.”, and said the Ouija directed her to end the child’s life just like her father’s (11). Unsuccessful at killing her

granddaughter, Elvaker loaded the remaining family into a car including her own daughter and her 15 and 10-year-old granddaughters. She then attempted to kill the family by crashing the car into a road sign on the highway. Elvaker broke both of her ankles in the crash while the remaining occupants remained mostly unharmed (11); that, was, until the crazed women attempted to push the 15-year-old granddaughter into oncoming traffic (11). When authorities arrived, Elvaker shed all of her clothes and fled into the woods. Police later found the women hiding in the woods. Brian Roach ultimately bleed to death

in the home from a single stab wound to the chest. Carol Sue Elvaker was found not guilty by reason of insanity (12). Burns notes, “It's amazing how the grandmother was able to let this Ouija board consume her life.” (11). More recently, a boy killed his long-

time friend when a Ouija board blamed the friend for all of his troubles. On February 29, 2012, a 15-year-old boy lead his 14-year-old friend to the woods behind his high school in Weslaco, Texas. He then repeatedly stabbed the boy in the abdomen (13). J.P. Rodriguez from the Wescalo

Police Department said, ”The Ouija Board allegedly. . .advised him that he needed to eliminate [the 14-year-old boy] so that he shouldn't have any further problems." (13). "He actually believed what the Ouija board advised him, that the friend was the cause of his problems.", another police spokesman said (14).Continued on page 24

The labyrinth has been a tool of the spiritual life of mankind since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians and Cretans (a Greek civilization) built labyrinths. Labyrinths were built by people of all faiths, and some of the modern world's most well-know labyrinths are located in cathedrals. There is no specific religious affiliation to the labyrinth; it is a spiritual tool, nothing more or less. It can be said that a labyrinth is what you make of it.Often a labyrinth is confused with

a maze. In fact, in modern language, the word labyrinth has become synonymous with maze. A maze and a labyrinth may appear similar; however, they are very different, especially in purpose. A maze is built and designed to trick and confuse - there are dead ends and incorrect turns. In other words, many decisions must be made to find the center and/or the way out. A labyrinth has only one path to the center and there are no tricks or dead

ends; the path you enter on is the correct path both into the center and back out. The only choice here is to enter or not - whether to walk a spiritual path or not. There are several types of labyrinth, with varying styles even within types. The classical three-circuit labyrinth was depicted on Cretan coins during the 300-70 BCE period and is perhaps one of the more recognized versions of the labyrinth. The labyrinth at Chartes Cathedral

is another example of a well-known labyrinth. The Chartes labyrinth is a Medieval eleven-circuit labyrinth, which places heavy emphasis on Sacred Geometry. Many consider the labyrinth to be

a model of the journey between life and death, or that walking the path of a labyrinth is symbolic of the journey to the center of oneself. It is used as a walking meditation or devotion. The walk in is to shed one’s outer Self and all the things holding one back and to

find the center of Self. The walk out is to return to the world with a larger understanding of your deepest Self. Despite, or perhaps because of, the spiritual nature of the labyrinth, there is no ‘correct’ way to approach walking the path of one. One could dance and sing the whole way or it could be a tearful, intense experience, or meditative and somber. It is a very personal journey and can and should be approached in a way that resonates with the spiritual journey of the walker. I walked the labyrinth at Morning

Star Retreat Center (pictured top left) in September of this year and found it to be a comforting and intense spiritual experience. Just standing near the stones that made up the labyrinth, it was easy to feel the spiritual resonance of such a place. I recited a mantra of what I wanted to take away from the experience as I walked; whether it was a trick of psychology or intent made real, or the Divine speaking, I walked away from the experience ready to move forward in life and with a lighter heart. Truly, it is an experience I would recommend to persons of all faiths and spiritualities.

Labyrinths are often confused with mazes, but in actuality the two are quite different. A maze (pictured right) is a complex puzzle with branches meant to allow the participant to choose paths and direction; these paths are meant to be confusing and can often lead to dead-ends. Whereas a labyrinth (pictured left) has only a single, non-branching, path leading to the center.

The witch took the place of the Overlord which was located near the middle of the park a few years ago. Review: The witch drew quite a crowd, and everyone was excited to see what the witch would do.

It’s Fall time again, when the leaves on trees change colors and start to fall to the ground, the days become shorter, and an eerie chill can be felt in the air. Fall offers a wide variety of activities, ranging from sight-seeing, to going to apple orchards, to braving haunted houses (both kinds – with real ghosts and “fake” ghosts!). However, as fun as this season may be, it’s always important to keep safety in mind whether you’re out and about or inside carving a pumpkin. Grimstone puts a high priority on safety during investigations and everyday life. These tips can help you and your family have a safe and enjoyable season:

• Watch out for wet leaves when walking and driving as they can cause the sidewalks and roadways to be slippery

• Be cautious while driving in areas where kids may be playing in piles of leaves

• Don’t strain yourself while raking leaves – use proper posture and an ergonomic rake if needed

• Use the proper tools for carving pumpkins – you probably don’t need a chainsaw to make your jack-o-lantern smile!

• Use a flameless candle in your pumpkin as an alternative to a real one – it can create a realistic effect while avoiding potential fire hazards

• If you are decorating your house with hay bales or cornstalks, be sure to keep them away from heat sources, such as incandescent and halogen lights, to prevent fires

• Yellow jackets are very active and aggressive in the Fall – try to avoid them as they may sting even if not provoked

• Replace the batteries in your

smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – a good time to do this is when Daylight Savings time ends (November 2 at 2:00 am this year)

• Prepare for the coming winter by having your furnace inspected to ensure it is functioning properly

• Be smart when enjoying bonfires – don’t let them get out of control

• As days become shorter, wear bright, reflective clothing if you’re walking or biking outdoors so others can see you

• If you are planning on being outside, make sure you have clothing for every kind of weather – days can be warm and nights can get very cold

• If you do visit a haunted house, be sure to follow the posted rules to ensure your safety and the safety of others

• If you go on a hayride (haunted or otherwise), stay within the trailer and do not lean over the edge

• Many people are inclined to visit real haunted sites during this time of year – be sure to obtain permission from the property owners prior to visiting as most of

these sites are subject to strict no trespassing rules

• Trick-or-treating tips:• When picking out a costume,

be sure to use fake props, such as knives and swords to avoid injuring yourself or others

• Go in groups or with adult supervision

• Don’t go to houses that aren’t lit up

• Make sure costumes are breathable and don’t interfere with your eyesight or hearing

• If you’re trick or treating, make sure others can see you (bring a flashlight or wear a glow stick)

• Walk – don’t run• Be cautious if houses have

candle-lit walkways• Inspect candy and treats

before you eat themThese tips have been compiled

from experience along with some help from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (www.cdc.gov / f am i l y / au tumn / i ndex .h tm) . Stay safe and happy haunting!

As a member of Grimstone Inc., I have the wonderful privilege of working with a fantastic group of paranormal investigators. Not only are they amazing people, but they are talented and passionate investigators who volunteer their time and efforts to paranormal research. I truly feel that they deserve to be recognized and

showcased in every issue!

It’s time to get to know the members who make Grimstone Inc. such a wonderful organization! Grimstone would not be where it is today without the strong passion, help, and dedication of its incredible volunteers. This issue’s

spotlight will be on Mark Krueger!

Name: Mark KruegerGrimstone Inc. Title: East Michigan Chapter DirectorWhat sparked your interest in the paranormal?I’ve had experiences as a child, but didn’t realize they may have been paranormal until I was an adult. After many unexplainable events as an adult, I started to do some research on the internet and found I wasn’t alone. It was about this time that ghost hunting shows started to come on TV. I really wanted to validate some of my experiences, so I bought an EMF detector and a digital recorder. I was amazed at the EVP’s I captured almost immediately. Shortly after, I received a birthday gift that changed my life concerning the paranormal anyway. There was this group name Grimstone Inc. that had been giving introductory paranormal classes at a local high school in the evenings. I never looked back after finishing the class. I ended up joining Grimstone as a member and have since then added many more experiences to validate the paranormal questions I have always had. When did you join Grimstone?October 15, 2009 I have been with

Grimstone for five yearsWhat is your favorite part about being a Grimstone member? What’s not to love about being a Grimmie, as we’re called amongst ourselves. I have made many friends who share a common interest with me. Being a Grimstone member means I’m a part of a team that is held in very high regards of our peers in the paranormal field. That’s so cool… What is your favorite instrument or method to use while investigating the paranormal? While technology it critical in the advancement of the scientific aspect of the paranormal, I’m kinda old school I guess you could say. My favorite tool is the tried and true digital audio recorder. Once you hear a good class A EVP, you’ll be hooked. What is your favorite place you’ve investigated?I’ve investigated many places, both public and private residences. I’ve had paranormal experiences in both, but I’ll stick to my favorite public place. Without a doubt, for me it’s Waverly Hills Sanitarium. OSR in Mansfield is right there though. You know, I really

slide switch to take it between record and play. During an EVP session in the attic the switch was moved from record to play without anyone touching it at all. Another one of my favorite experiences came from this investigation as well. I was down on the main floor with my ear to the wall feeling for the vibrations so that I could find the source spot of the wall knocking. To my amazement, I experienced what felt like a finger poking me in the ear and my head was physically pushed away from the wall. Being touched is something you never forget. What is your paranormal pet peeve?Obviously, you want to create the best Continued on page 30

a young boy. Our team set up our equipment throughout the house and in the attic. We were witness to the knocks and bangs on the walls ourselves and even captured what appears to be video evidence in the attic. The knocking seemed to have been consistently coming from one wall in particular. We decided to place a team in the attic over that wall and a team on the main floor to monitor the clients and to observe the wall from there as well. The responses to our questions seemed to be intelligent. The knocking went on for hours and even responded to our questions and requests without fail by knocking the exact number of times we requested. At one point, we had an audio recorder with a manual

can’t choose one over the other. I’ll just say it’s a tie. Describe the most memorable paranormal experience you’ve experienced, if you’ve experienced one. Wow!! They are all pretty memorable, but if I have to choose, I’ll choose my favorite experience as a professional investigator. I had just been promoted to a Lead Investigator role with the group. We received a call from a distressed mother that there were things happening in their home that were really scaring her and her young daughter. She said she had been hearing knocks and bangs and that the daughter was seeing what she believed to be the spirit of

occasional tune at a karaoke bar or even in an old abandoned music hall. Singing really makes me happy!

Friends of the clients showed up and all. Not cool when I may have driven many miles to perform a serious investigation for people who claimed needed our help. We don’t make money doing this. We do this for three reasons in my opinion. 1) Answers to our own questions about life and beyond 2) To help advance the science of the paranormal 3) To help people in need.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Free time? What do you mean? What is free time? No free time that I can speak of lately. I know I would like to be more involved than I have been able to lately. I love to drive around and look for old spooky houses and barns and so forth. Maybe it’s called urban exploration. Name a fun and interesting fact about yourself.I love to sing. Some fellow Grimmies have heard me punch out the
