Organizational Culture

Eradicating the “Aggie Shuffle”

The “Aggie Shuffle” – Many students report that lack of communication among administrative offices at

NC A&T hinders their success. When administrative questions or problems arise, students frequently get

“bounced around” from one office to another. Understanding the practices, programs, and institutional

structures that contribute to Student Success at North Carolina A&T State University is vital to the

continued growth and success of this Premiere Learning Institution. This training is open to Faculty and

Staff, the facilitator will introduce the concept of “Super Advisor” (i.e. current employees assigned to the

task of helping direct students, parents, faculty and staff). Facilitator: Akua Matherson, Vice Chancellor of

Doing it All ”Staying Focused and Engaged

The target population for this training is all Faculty and Staff, in this session the facilitator will look at the

“new normal” of the work environment, which means often times we’ve inherited work from others, are

multitasking 24/7 and may have responsibilities for which we have little training and experience. In

addition, we’re expected to produce positive results with fewer resources. Given these circumstances, it’s

not surprising that maintaining focus and staying engaged can be a major hurdle. With so many

simultaneous demands on your time, staying focused and engaged is no longer an option. It’s a “must-

have” skill for doing your job well and keeping your position viable. Are you “hard-wired” to stay focused

on a situation or task in spite of distractions, fatigue and boredom? What practical tools and techniques can

help you make the best of your innate strengths, mitigate your challenges, stay focused and spend more

time and energy on what you like doing best, while maintaining your work load. Facilitator: Dr. Brian

The Nine Tenets of Diversity

This training will address how we as Faculty and Staff can begin to recognize the correlation of the formative

educational experience not only on our global student population but specifically on the African American

male adolescent and the impact those formative years have on the whole person. Including, but not limited

to academic learning capabilities, and ethnic identities related to their success at North Carolina A&T State

University. This two hour session will touch on academic optimism, political awareness, and critical

consciousness from a multicultural perspective. Highlighting how diversity includes more than just the

three common areas: Ethnicity, Race and Gender but further examining the nine tenets of diversity: Race,

Ethnicity, Gender, Age, Sexual Orientation, Socioeconomic Status, Geography, Religion as well as, Physical

and Mental Capabilities Facilitator: Dr. Anthony Graham, Professor & Chairperson – Department of

Moving from Transactional to Transformational Leadership

Guiding transformational change may be the ultimate test for an organization. Oftentimes major academic or

corporate change initiatives – whether the focus is to increase quality, improve organizational culture or to

provide strategic direction and vision –generate only lukewarm results. Why? Some managers don’t realize

that transformation is a process, not an event. It advances on stages that build on each other. This session

will provide participants with a framework that will aid in the facilitation of organizational transformation as

well as the identification of the style of leadership that is needed to foster better critical thinking regarding

the achievement of the strategic priorities at North Carolina A&T State University. Facilitator: Dr. Eric

Gladney, Director, Center for Leadership and Organizational Excellence - Division of Human Resources.

Conflict Solutions

Why should you resolve conflict? The main goal of negotiation with your colleagues is to come to an

agreement that benefits all parties. Some other good reasons to negotiate are: 1) Understanding more about

other people’s ideas, beliefs, and backgrounds which may be different from your own. In order to resolve a

conflict, you'll need to look at the situation from your opponent's point of view and learn more about this

person or group's perspective and motivations. 2) Ensures that your relationships with colleagues continue

and grow. If you make peace, you increase your own allies in the work place. 3) Successful negotiations

pave the way for smooth relationships in the future. Full-blown conflicts use up resources -- time, energy,

good reputation, and motivation. By negotiating, you avoid wasting valuable resources, which in turn may

actually make new allies and find additional resources. Facilitator: Shanda Woods, Training Specialist -

Customer Service Excellence

From an educational institution perspective, we cherish good service. In survey after survey, it is an

important differentiator in our stakeholder’s (e.g. students, parents, faculty & staff and, surrounding

community) experience. Excellence in customer service doesn't come about accidentally. Each process

element needs to be carefully defined, planned and managed. Research indicates that marginal to less than

marginal service is not born from attitude and effort alone, but from design choices made in the very

blueprints of a business model that undergirds our organizations. It is easy to throw customer service into a

mission statement and periodically do whatever it takes to make a customer happy. What’s hard is designing

a customer service excellence model that allows average employees – not just the exceptional ones – to

produce service excellence as an everyday routine. Participants in this workshop will learn how to leverage

the key aspects of the customer service excellence model with their core business processes and they will

learn the importance of understanding & communicating their organization’s standards Facilitator: Dr. Eric

Business Execution: Understanding the Fundamentals**

Business managers are usually comfortable formulating strategy to enhance business outcomes. But what

happens when plans fail to translate to reality? Why is business execution so difficult? Delivery is vital to the

survival of all organizations, yet unclear plans, unsuitable workforces, and limited resources can have a

detrimental effect on the best strategic ideas. Good leadership, having the right people in the right roles, and

a business culture that's focused on getting the job done are the cornerstones to building and maintaining a

company that can execute its strategy. This course will review the drivers of business execution and the

fundamental concepts that companies need to pay attention to in order to realize their plans. The course

looks at the leadership behaviors that foster actionable strategy, as well as the value of selecting the right

people for the right roles. It also considers how to create and manage a 'get it done' culture. Target

Audience: Anyone who wants to initiate the conditions, implement the strategies, and provide support for

business execution in their organization.

Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure

Few decisions that a university faculty and administration make are as important potentially as those

involving the reappointment, tenure, or promotion of colleagues. Within the UNC system the processes

by which these decisions are made vary among the constituent universities. This is as it should be, since

each institution has its own character shaped by its constituents, its history, and its particular missions.

However, even though RPT processes may vary in their details, they should share the characteristic of

being consistent with certain principles. Participants in this training will get a clear understanding of the

processes used on the campus of NC A&T State University as it relates to the multi-level review process

for reappointment, promotion and tenure (RPT) decisions. Facilitator: Dr. Joe B Whitehead, Provost and

Developing your Personal Brand

This training is for all Faculty and Staff. Your personal brand is all about who you are and what you

want to be known for. It’s your reputation. It’s about bringing who you are to what you do and how you

do it. It’s making your mark by being yourself—your best self. Think of your personal brand as your

calling card—your unique promise of value. And while that’s a pretty broad concept, in this two hour

training we will begin exploring the process for building your brand with a few easy steps. Whether

you’re looking for that next employment opportunity, a student, or gainfully employed, you must think,

act, and plan like a business leader. With the surge of social media, you not only have the ability, but you

now have the need to manage your own reputation, both online and in real life. Developing your

personal brand is essential for the advancement of your career. Facilitator: Nicole Pride, Chief of Staff and

Transitioning to a Research Doctoral Institution

The A&T Preeminence 2020 Strategic Plan for 2011-2020 establishes performance goals for many key

metrics including three metrics associated with the research enterprise. The goal established for total

contract and grant awards represented an increase of more than 40% to $85M per year. During the first

decade of the 21st century federal research budgets grew rapidly so continued growth at NC A&T seemed

a sure bet. For the past six years, however, the United States government and the state of North Carolina

have dealt with the recession by reducing federal and state budgets. This presentation will provide a

vision for growing the NC A&T research enterprise to the Preeminence 2020 goals under the current

economic conditions. The changes needed are consistent with continuing the transition to a research

doctoral institution. Goals were also established for annual patent generation and licensing revenues.

This presentation will address progress toward those goals that will accompany growth in the research

enterprise. The content of this presentation is intended to stimulate participation from the audience in

discussion of challenges and illumination of alternate paths to success. Facilitators: Dr. Barry L. Burks Vice

Chancellor for Research and Economic Development.

Leadership Essentials: Creating Your Own Leadership Development Plan**

Creating your own leadership development plan is a significant part of any successful and valuable

leadership-development strategy. Leadership development plans help to ensure that you remain focused on

what is required to continually grow and develop as a leader. This includes assessing your own style, values,

and requirements, as well as identifying development goals, objectives, and actions. This course explores

ways to assess yourself as a leader, establish a vision for the future, and identify obstacles to that vision. It

also teaches practical approaches for setting development goals, objectives, and actions designed to move you

toward your vision. Lastly, it provides useful criteria for evaluating a personal leadership development plan.

Materials designed to support blended learning activities aligned with this course are available from the

VAWA & The Clery Act

The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) is a United States federal law, The Act provides

funding towards the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, imposes automatic

and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and allows civil redress in cases prosecutors chose to leave

un-prosecuted. On March 7, 2013, President Obama signed a bill that strengthened and reauthorized the

Violence Against Women Act. Included in the bill was the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act

(Campus SaVE), which amends the Jeanne Clery Act and affords additional rights to campus victims of

sexual violence, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. Every post-secondary institution

participating in Title IV financial aid programs will be required to adhere to a host of rules and regulations

regarding these laws. This training will educate faculty and staff on the direct impact these laws have on
