DEAR FRIENDS,

On behalf of the Foundation Board, it’s my pleasure to thank you for your financial support during our fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014. Your contributions are more important than ever, and are having a real impact on the lives of those we serve.

I am continually astounded by the generosity of so many in our community. More than 2,000 donors made contributions to PeaceHealth Southwest last year, and more than 500 contributed at the Cascade Society level of $1,000 or more.

A few of the projects you helped fund include: O A new hybrid cath lab (opening January 2015) for the

best in heart and vascular care

O The latest surgical and diagnostic equipment for the Cancer Center and Kearney Breast Center

O Services for men, women and children who can’t afford the care they need

Like many of our donors, I support PeaceHealth Southwest in part because of the excellent care I received as a patient. Delivering safe, compassionate care to all who need it is at the core of the PeaceHealth mission. Your gifts help ensure that our hospital can continue to carry out this important mission during a time of enormous change in health care, locally and nationally.

My wife Cindy and I make annual gifts to the hospital, and we have also included a bequest in our estate plans. We are following in the footsteps of people like the late Dick Carroll who served PeaceHealth Southwest as a board member for more than 18 years. Dick died this summer just before his 90th birthday. He left a significant bequest to the hospital which will be endowed in perpetuity. Generations of patients will benefit from Dick’s generosity and vision.

Thank you for your support, and have a happy, healthy holiday season!

Making a DifferenceTHROUGHOUT HIS LIFETIME AND WITH A FINAL GIFT

Engineering, race walking, genealogy – Dick Carroll was a man of many passions who approached everything with a “can do” attitude. His 89 years of life included service during WWII in the Army Corps of Engineers, helping to develop the early transportation infrastructure in the State of Washington, and assisting victims of natural disasters around the world.

Two of Dick’s passions rose above the others, however. The first was his love for his family, including his wife, Betty, and his children, Judy, Joan, Eugene, Jo, James and Bart. The second was his love for PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

Dick’s involvement with PeaceHealth Southwest evolved from his service on the board of Memorial Hospital. When Memorial and St. Joseph merged in 1977, Dick was right in the thick of things as chairman of the Memorial Board. In an interview with Dick in the spring of 2014, he remembered those days as very challenging. Dick personally took a lot of criticism. “It was a real difficult deal. It takes a lot of funerals to change things,” Dick observed.

For more than 18 years, Dick served the Medical Center as a board member and eventually was

elected President of the National Hospital Association. His last PeaceHealth Southwest event was the spring 2014 Cascade Society Dinner where he was an honored guest.

During his service to PeaceHealth Southwest, Dick made consistent gifts of support through the Foundation.

Through his will, however, Dick made a major bequest to the hospital, providing that, at death, the remainder of his estate would be given to the Foundation to establish an endowment to be called The Carroll Family Fund in memory of Betty J. Carroll.

“Like many of the Greatest Generation, Dick believed in the foundational institutions of society...the family, the church, the hospital. His bequest was unrestricted, and will provide the hospital flexibility in utilizing the interest income for the highest benefit of our patients and programs,” says Carol Van Natta, executive director of the Foundation. “We are deeply grateful to Dick and his children for this remarkable gift.”

A bequest in your will or estate plan is one of the easiest ways to make a significant gift in

support of great local health care. If you already have a will, a simple codicil can amend

it to name your favorite hospital department or program as a beneficiary. Designating a

percentage of the remainder of your estate after providing for your loved ones ensures that

your charitable legacy continues after you’re gone. To request a free Will & Trust Planner,

Neurosciences Campaign Advances Thanks to Generous Supporters

The PeaceHealth Southwest Campaign for the Neurosciences gained incredible momentum since kicking off in February. The campaign is raising funds to improve care of brain and spine patients.

O Phase 2 is the creation of an endowed fund to provide advanced education to neuro-related caregivers ($1,000,000 goal)

O Phase 3 is the remodel/expansion of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit on 4West in the Mother Joseph building ($6,000,000 goal)

We are so grateful to our PHSW Foundation board members and governing board members who have contributed $2,490,000 to date to the campaign!

Grateful thanks to these donors who have made generous commitments to our Neurosciences Campaign:

TAKING A SWING FOR NEUROSCIENCES!Rainy skies couldn’t keep spirits down at the 2nd Annual Oregon Electric Group (OEG) Charity Golf Tournament. The September 29th event, held at Royal Oaks Country Club, raised $65,000 in support of exceptional neurological care in Southwest Washington. Under the leadership of Keith Knight, OEG’s Director of Business Development and Foundation Board Member, the tournament committee and OEG have committed to raising $250,000 over five years as part of the Neurosciences Campaign.

Foursomes enjoyed a Vegas-themed golf experience with activities, treats, and entertainment while they played and celebrated the life of Willie Lasater during the dinner program. Lasater died of a brain tumor at age 52 earlier this year. Lasater’s 13 year-fight against brain cancer was Keith’s inspiration for committing so significantly to the Neurosciences Campaign.

Thank you to Keith and Oregon Electric Group for hosting such an excellent tournament!

Community ConnectionsMany thanks to the generous and creative community partners who help raise vital funds in support of our patients and programs at PeaceHealth Southwest!

Girlfriends Run for a Cure – Thank you to the great men of the Pink Brigade, who raised $25,000 in support of the Kearney Breast Center’s patients and programs. Special thanks to event organizer Northwest Personal Training!

Philanthropists David and Patricia Nierenberg their children and PeaceHealth Southwest caregivers celebrated at the September blessing and dedication of the new portico entrance to the Family Birth Center and Holtzman Twins Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The portico is sheltering tiny babies and their families from the elements. The NICU is named after David Nierenberg’s mother and aunt, the Holtzman twins, who were born prematurely in 1928.

CenteringPregnancy Program Gets $5,000 Grant from Macy’s – PeaceHealth Southwest and The Vancouver Clinic (TVC) are collaborating to offer the first CenteringPregnancy® program in Southwest Washington.
