THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPHThe University of Guelph was established by an act of the ontariolegislature on May 8, 1964, when its founding colleges – Macdonaldinstitute, the ontario agricultural College, and the ontario veterinaryCollege – joined with a new college of arts and science. Today, the institutioncomprises seven colleges: arts, Biological science, Management andeconomics, ontario agricultural College, ontario veterinary College, physical and engineering science, and social and applied human sciences.
in partnership with the ontario Ministry of agriculture, food and ruralaffairs (oMafra), the University offers diploma and degree programs atthe regional campuses of alfred, Kemptville and ridgetown.
The University of Guelph-humber, located in north Toronto, was establishedin partnership with the humber institute of Technology and advancedlearning and offers programs leading to both a university degree and acollege diploma.
The University of Guelph is also renowned for its commitment to placingstudents first, research intensity across disciplines, collaboration with world-class partners, distance educationopportunities and international outreach. Guelph students pursue more than 80 undergraduate and 45 graduatedegree programs spanning the natural and physical sciences and humanities. over 95,000 University of Guelphalumni are contributing their talents to their profession and society around the world.
Today, more than 20,000 full- and part-time students study on the Guelph campus, characterized by its blend ofmodern and historic buildings, wide stretches of lawn and attractive arboretum.
UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH CRESTThe University of Guelph Crest was designed by eric arthur and John hall of the University of Torontoschool of architecture. The three components of the design — the crest, shield and motto — represent theUniversity’s links with the City of Guelph and the University of Toronto (the degree-granting body for Guelph’sfounding colleges before the University of Guelph was incorporated in 1964).
The white stallion in the crest links U of G with the house of hanover’s coat of arms. The name “Guelph”comes from “Welfen,” the family name of the house of hanover, which intermarried with the english royalline. The three-part shield combines a book (symbolizing learning, the liberal arts and the University of Torontoconnection), an astrolabe (symbolizing science) and a cornucopia (a symbol for abundance and agriculture).
The crest and shield are used with or without the University of Guelph motto rerum cognoscere causas, a quotefrom virgil which means “to learn the meaning of reality.”
THE UNIVERSITYMACE
Created by Guelph artisan harold Muller andpresented to the University by the citizens of Guelph, the mace is carried in the academic procession by theBeadle. it is topped by the silver crown of Queenvictoria (reigning monarch when two of thefounding colleges were established) and decoratedwith native Canadian stones. Below the crown are theinsignia of Queen elizabeth ii and the foundingcolleges and four plaques bearing the coats of arms ofCanada, ontario, the City of Guelph, and theUniversity. The crown is mounted on pine from Massey library and supported by metal forged from an oldontario farm implement. sixteen symbols on the shank represent the arts, sciences and various college activities.

CONFERRING THE DEGREE / GRANTING THE DIPLOMA
The dignified ceremonials used for conferring degrees have evolvedfrom rituals used in the 12th and 13th century church. early studentswere usually clerks in holy orders, monks or priests who wore a habit orcloak with a cowl or hood. Modern academic costume has its roots inthe colourful robes introduced by oxford and Cambridge 600 years ago.The Convocation ceremony is also an ancient tradition. The ceremonybegins with the arrival of the mace, symbol of the University, and theChancellor, our senior executive officer. The Chancellor confers thedegree or grants the diploma while the Beadle places the hood over therecipient’s shoulders. at the University of Guelph, the Beadle – anotherlink between the University and its clerical roots – is the secretary ofsenate. The presentation of the parchment is the final act of theceremony.
ACADEMIC REGALIAThe wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has continued sincethe Middle ages, when the first Universities were founded. The regaliavary slightly from one University to another, and within a University, according to the status of the wearer. at the University of Guelph, theUndergraduate’s and Master’s gowns are black, Doctorate gowns are blue.the colours for the degrees are as follows:Bachelor of applied science – blueBachelor of arts – whiteBachelor of arts and science – narrow white and goldBachelor of Bio-resource Management – red and goldBachelor of Commerce – taupeBachelor of Computing – dark blueBachelor of engineering – dark greenBachelor of landscape architecture – orangeBachelor of science – goldBachelor of science in agriculture – yellowBachelor of science in environmental sciences – purpleBachelor of science in Technology – narrow blue and goldDoctor of veterinary Medicine – brownMaster of applied nutrition – pale gold/pale greenMaster of applied science –gold/greenMaster of arts – whiteMaster of arts (leadership) – white Master of Bioinformatics – gold/redMaster of Business administration – grey/silverMaster of engineering – greenMaster of environmental sciences – purpleMaster of fine arts – red and whiteMaster of landscape architecture – orangeMaster of planning – dark greenMaster of public health – blueMaster of science – goldMaster of science (planning) – gold Doctor of philosophy – gold with blue cordDoctor of veterinary science – gold with gold cordThe Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour.
