Responding to the world’s love affair with self-ex-pression, or social media. Whether it’s selfies, or con-

stant tweets, we all feel the urge to share. p.r. and the editorial board called for all writers and poets to select submissions. A mix of poems, short story excerpts, and song verses, with some of them featuring an alphabet writing prompt. Each with it’s own element of individual-ity, surprise, humor and passion. In the process we

have discovered new talent, and reintroduced the love of writing to many writers.

dear readers,

“either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing” - Benjamin Franklin

the last issue:

on writing:

all summer while kat, laura, briana, marie and I worked hard on pro-

ducing Portrait of a Lady runway show, look book editorial shoot, fashion issue & the ladisav after party (yea that many projects) there was this buzz I could not shake. It was there at every meeting, talking about it with others, and getting other people a part of the production. We featured three of The Robyn Chroni-cles main cast members, Shelly George of NAKED2FASHION, Tess Rose of Brother Valiant folk band, DJ Drewski of Hot 97 to hook up the show and to top it all off, a great recap video from Tyree of 91films.com. All in all it was a great experience and I can not wait for the next one!

on a recent trip to New Hampshire, I was able to connect with nature and writing. one that loves to write knows how much of a release it is. It’s easy to go so long without doing it, but once you pick up that pen or start typing it all comes together. you start to think, “why haven’t I been doing this?” or “this is what has been missing in my life.” That’s how I always feel at least. The trip came at a perfect time, after the madness of Portrait of a Lady was over. The summer issue had released and it was time to think about the fall issue. I sat in front of mount chicoro and wrote, for the first time in months.

series:This is the first story/poem anthology titled THE ABC SERIES, inspired by an alphabet writing prompt I discovered on the trip. You write a short story or poem in 26 sentences, each sentence starting with the next letter of the alphabet. It was a lot of fun, and took a lot of work. I decided to ask the world to try them, and that is when the idea for the anthology came to be. The fall issue, has given me the op-portunity to give the readers and writers the chance to provide the content for the zine. As well, as continue to expand the team. The next print issue will be a year since the first zine debuted and it’s all about exposure. Let’s get it! Enjoy this extra special issue.

Tell Us About Yourself &

Your Writing Journey:

Karen ChambersSouth Orange, NJ

Our Love in LettersI am a freelance lifestyle, beauty and fashion writer who has written for publica-tions like Black Enterprise for many years. I also work in the beauty industry as a Creative Director for IMAN and a Copy Writer. This is my first submission of a per-sonal piece of poetry. But I am working on a personal collection of love poems done in Haiku and co-curating a local photo exhibit in the Orange Valley. So I am excited to begin this leg of my creative journey with this unique writing challenge. I work in NYC, but am a proud long time resident of South Orange and am excited to be part

of the growing creative community in our area.

Derek DeylingSan Diego, CA

How to Lose Succesfully After growing up in the San Diego area of California, I moved to Huntington Beach to study Journalism and experience a new city. My then underdeveloped passion for writing swelled into fruition during the 2012 school year while I immersed myself in classic American authors and poets i.e. Fitzgerald, Eliot, Hemmingway, Poe. I entered into a period of my life where for the first time I felt passionate about something. I made the commitment to write every day for an entire summer, and that habit never stopped. This year I made the decision to leave school and start writing hard and diligently about things that matter, while actively seeking work in the writing world.

This is the first submission of my fledgling career.

All I know, I learned with youBursting out of the nest, weChose similar paths

Drawn to the creativeEducating ourselves in drawing and dreamingFinding our own way, we drew parallel lines

Gone are those long drives to nowhereHoning in on our futuresInfinite, laid out before us

Just when I stumble, now, at an unfamiliar bendKindnesses you would have given so effortlesslyLanguish in the netherworld between the living and the dead

Maybe I am the one who has diedNo one’s passion was ever stronger than yoursOverrun with my own self-doubts, I cool myself in your shadow

Perhaps our paths are parallel still,Quietly you are telling me, our legacies are intertwinedRemember where we started, pick up the trail

Susan, I carry you, will carry you, as you have carried meThrough thunder and lightningUnafraid, as you have been, chasing down the tempest

Visions of nature’s power drove youWill drive me on as wellXerothermic landscapes and lifescapes drive us both

You will forever define for me what living truly means,Zulu warrior

ACTUALLY BABE CAN’T DEAL

Abe left everything behind. Betsey drank his beers first. Collecting the empties and building a bottle pyramid in their yard. During the afternoon on the second day she bowled them down with his childhood baseball. “Everything,” she thought, pulling Abe’s leather jacket around her tighter.Five books, eighteen t-shirts, one mug with a broken handle. “Goddamn, wasn’t there more to him?”His phone was under the bed. It whistled when he got text messages and barked like a dog when someone called. “Just one look,” Betsey told herself on the third day opening a text message from Katy. Katy’s long hair covered her face in the photo she sent. Like, like, like, Betsey liked all of the things Abe should be seeing . Max’s status about Breaking Bad. nadine94’s instagram photo of the sushi she made. “Obscure shadows on the mind are much scarier than the dark shad-ows of the night (mehmet murat ildan),” Abe/Betsey liked posting quotes on facebook. Pauly D commented, “you okay bro???”“Question that sometimes has me hazy: am i or the others crazy (eint-stein) @pauly d,” Abe/Betsey replied.Roz texted Abe about lunch and Abe/Betsey suggested the usual spot. She watched the woman at the diner (Roz?) watch the door and squeeze lemon into hot tea. Texts and tweets flew from her fingertips.

Ur so cool, Betsey texted herself from Abe. Veronica sent a snap chat and for a moment she filled Abe’s screen then disappeared forever. “Where r u?” Betsey texted Abe. “Xactly,” was the reply. “You know what percent you can really know another person?” Abe/Betsey posted. “Zero.”

HOW TO LOSE SUCCESSFULLY

by Derek Deyling

A man is only truewhen he hits rock bottom.

Better a broken beggarthan a two-faced king.

Clarity is closest tothose without hope.

Drowning is the quickestway one learns to swim.

Earthquakes are an architect’sfavorite disaster.

Fools forget catastropheis a tool we can use.

God is somewhere laughingat his paradoxical trickery,

Hiding in the stars whilewe sort out our wounds.

Impatience is the downfallof ambitious intentions,

Justifying shortcutsskipping chapters again.

Keep on dodging bulletsits only human nature..

Life is an expert marksmanyou’ll go down by the end.

Marionette strings tiedto wealthy men’s rings.

No one will feel pity whenthe pendulum swings.

Only through his failurescan man hope to grow.

Perhaps there is some wisdomtrue humility knows.

Queries for the comfortable, the complacent and content:

Remember the last timeyour heart beat fully?

Since when are human beingsconfined to the routine?

Take tutelage from eaglesplace the heavens in your sights.

Undertake the pilgrimage ofunraveling your significance.

Victory is won bytaking losses in stride.

Water reaches root whileit works through the mud.

Xeric hearts are dyingin the drought of success.

Yours is the year of plentythough it seems there is naught.

Zealous men are gratefulwhen they reach the top.

RED AURORA: THE AWAKENING In a world without moral, there is no honor. This is the story of a boy becoming a man and changing the world into a better place while never changing that which he values on his chase for peace and serenity. This is the story of a search to find

the mystery and memory of a society lost.

In a sense I’ve always been considered the outcast, an optimistic dreamer in a world that has long given up on trivial bullshit such as hope. This is year 10 after The Aurora, but people have long stopped caring about time. Time is just an afterthought that is always welcome to keep flowing in order to aid us in dealing with the hell in which we live. I live in the part of town you stay away from, Al-bilis. Its a slum overfilled with the most wicked and wretched, people...for lack of a better word to ever have God breathe life into.

As I mentioned before there was an aurora which appeared over the skies about 10 years ago. No one knows how or even exactly why but as people do we adapted although nothing seemed to change except for the lost memories. The thing is that we as a people have forgotten how to measure time. The only reason that we have knowledge of the term years is due to the excavations through the lands of the Forgotten. But me I don’t delve too much into that, I have different issues at hand currently.

I’m what’s known as an outsider, a lone wolf, I keep to myself but that doesn’t mean I’m not social. Its just that I don’t have much to say. I don’t have much to say because unfortunately, I happen to have nothing in common with the people surrounding me.

Right now I’m walking into the biggest joke of all school. I actually care about my education, however, the people around me including teachers aren’t quite as prone. I look up at the reddish auburn tint in the sky and wonder if I’ll ever stray from my daily routine and mundane existence and arrive late to school. “KATO!!?!!”

Oh yeah that’s my name being called. “Kato !!”, shrieked Mattiv. Mattiv’s always had it out for me he was the stereotypical junkyard bully. Insecure and unstable due to a home life that was as faulty as the locks on his apartment build-ing.

Page 17: FALL 2013: THE ABC SERIES

He’s been hounding me for years posturing as my friend and using his bulk to inspire fear in me although that doesn’t work. I may not be a fighter but I can take care of myself and I know when to pick my fights and when to take flight.“Kato what’s up man , how’s the family”, he said this with a smile on his very punchable face although he knows I have no family.

“You know they’re the same as always...dead or gone or whatever.” He’s accustomed to my wry and sarcastic answers so he shrugs off the fact that my voice is laced with poison. “I wonder what Grendel is going to have us do today in 1st period.” “I don’ feel like talking right now Matt, I’m tired, I actually did my home-work last night extra emphasis on that homework word.”

“Mighty Cheeky today are we”, chirps a syrupy sweet voice that I did not need to hear at this point in my day. “ Please Great Aurora Kill Me Now”, I hate her. She’s my antithesis. Whereas I’m a stone cold loner with no family and a bank account that goes no higher than the speed limit recorded in the Forgotten Times, Coryn is popular, beautiful beyond measure, and has a nice warming and loving family. Why she acknowl-edges my existence is another matter entirely.

I’ve been told that I’m extremely intelligent, my intellect surpasses not only that of my peers but that of the adults around me. Coryn though smart is also nosy, she says curious as hell, and for no good reason has a habit of hassling me to no end about things in this world that she doesn’t understand. It’s been this way since we were kids.

Her idea is that I’m hiding something and that I was sent here through some mumbo jumbo scheme that I really don’t have the willpower to entertain.

In the end though we both want to achieve the same overall goal. PEACE

“Coryn what is it now”, I ask in exasperation. “Listen Kato, I heard some things through the grapevine.” “You have to stop using those ancient terms, otherwise they’ll start to won-der if you’ve been looking at those illegal transcripts you stole.” “Ok, ok whatever” she waved me off. “What did U hear anyways, what was it about.” “Let Me Explain! As u found out a while back the higher ups are sending ships up to the Red Aurora. However I found out that there is some funny business transpiring along with that.”

Page 18: FALL 2013: THE ABC SERIES

“You have my undivided attention”, she knows she’s got me but it doesn’t matter. “Why do you guys always leave me out of stuff”

“SHUT UP MATTIV!!”, we both yell in aggravation.

“Actually we may need some muscle for this one”, she says looking Matt up and down” “Whatever just give us the rundown already.” “ Ok, well those ships they were sending up, some never came down, but those aren’t our concern. What I observed from my safe spot was the people themselves who ventured too close to the aurora. Something’s not right with that cloud.”

“What do you mean?” “I mean when Test subject 17684 went in that ship he came out different, not physically or even mentally. It was as if his spirit was broken.”

My eyes widened...”H-how d-do you m-mean, spirit broke.”

“I did a routine check through my crack in the file database and got his background scoop. Married man worked in the educational system. Never been arrested, no tickets, general reputation was clean, never caught cheating on his wife, didn’t drink smoke or use any illegal substances.”

“And”, I gritted out impatiently.” What changed.”

“After he came down he was no different at first, however as time went along it became apparent that he was no longer the same man. He began by drinking more than just socially, then by being affected by bouts of violent anger and wrathful fits of jealousy. The last straw came when he slipped out on his wife, I’m tellin’ you man, something isn’t right with that aurora. It was the same as what happened to my parents.

A chance meeting changed my world the day I met youBy just your voice, I sensed that nothing was the sameChance is too random a descriptionDestiny’s more accurate a name

Everything in the stars aligned like heavenFamine became feast in your embraceGod granted an answer to my prayersHopeful-thinking was alas transformed by grace

My nights had never known such tender pleasuresNor had my days known joys so sweetOur love must have been written in the cosmosProvidence decided we would meet

THROW ME A BONE

God wont hold ya hand, But he’ll throw you a bone. We’re all dogs chasing our tailsOn a quest to be left alone. So we push away companionsAnd let it fall to peak.I let my body rise as I climb higher above these sheets.Never know the lands ive seen,And sandy beaches few,Another taste and I would dieTo think the places you’ve been too;Or the things you’ve been thru.Nights of fallen shadows.Out to sea and no paddle.Having but never had you. These thoughts ping ponging. The longing. When my brain won’t craft anymoreInuendos to hide this.Touch me, oh midas,And turn this heart to stone again.God throw me another bone again.About to throw this phone and so, no one could ever phone again.

WRITER

by p.r.

A writer, writing about a writer.Beautiful words, telling a lovely story.Characters in the story falling in love .Deciding, that you can’t fall in love with the story, but with the writer.Everyone can like anything.Favorite things rarely mean it is meant to be.Gorgeous moments, with the person is what matters.Human nature.I’m a writer.Jaded, yes. But I still write.Knowledge does not always mean you are older.Learning and educating others varies with age.More. more. more.Never stop writing,Open my mind, heart, and inspired, I tell her.People clap, but did they listen?Quiet was the room, but who heard?Respect writer’s work.Speak.Thank you for sharing.Understanding between two writers.Velvet, experience hearing that story.Whether or not we meet again, I say thank you.Exquisite experience, I hope to bring to my writing.Years from now, I’ll remember the story, a 16 year old writer wrote about another writer.Zestful story.

FLOWERS IN THE MOONLIGHT

by Jude Saint-Jean

The most beautiful flowersAre the ones that are hiddenThe ones that no one ever sees

Hidden from everyone’s eyesWe silently bloomUnseen, misunderstood

We bask in our obscurityAnd we thrive in the darkness

We bloom just as beautifully as any roseYet we don’t bloom for anyoneOther than ourselves

We get to view the worldIn a whole new lightWithout the pressures of the visible worldWithout us being demanded to be a certain way

We work in silenceWe go through our lives unnoticedYet we don’t fret

We will thriveBlooming in the nightBasking in the pure white lightOf the moon.

NO HAPPY ENDING

alphabet prompt

A journey I wish I hadn’t began now looking back.

Before it got bad it was something worth getting used to.

Carelessly taken advantage yearning for love.

Doubt consumed the bulk of my mind, body, and heart.

Even those feelings wouldn’t let me part. Why?

Fear of being alone again, that empty thought of loneliness.

Grasping ahold of something that wasn’t even there.

Hopelessly in love with a lie.

Illusions of a candy coated union with nothing less than a happy ending.

Judging the individual on the facade they first portrayed.

Killer pains when the truth starts to reveal.

Loyalty is all you ever wanted because it’s what you pushed the most.

Matters of the heart are never answered equally.

Nice always finishes last is what they said but I never believed them.

Page 29: FALL 2013: THE ABC SERIES

Opportunities of the perfect companion missed because of self-ishness an angel he has left.

Poetic satisfaction grew absent when we talked.

Questions of what was real and what was faux in this fable of lost love.

Relentless pursuit of happiness because even broken hearts still beat.

Struck by Cupid or even stars the blinds aren’t permanent clar-ity always prevails.

Twisted fallacies brought on by expectations are only moments that teach.

Universal miseducation about relationships meaning still I know what it means to me.

Visual, verbal, mental, and physical heart strings pulled left and right until the truth is found.

Wanting to be wanted but needing a warranty for things that can only be healed with time.

Xtasy, xhaustion, xplainations, and xotic all words that start with an e making relationships end with eX if neglected.

You decide who is worthy of your love and who is not but choose wisely.

Zest was never enough... A fable without a happy ending.
