First grader Angel came to Kids in Motion with issues in reading, math and behavior. Angel was identified by the teacher as a child that could benefit from “Reading Buddies” a program where students are paired and encourage each other to read. Overtime, Angel began to change his attitude about reading and actually looked forward to reading time. His confidence started to grow and his classroom negative behaviors decreased. On his last report card his teacher wrote, “Angel has worked very hard in first grade. He is reading at grade level and knows 254 out of 254 sight words. In math Angel is working at grade level. Awesome job,Angel!”

A big Thank You to our Corporate Sponsors!Over the summer, our Vista member, Marjorie Lloyd, helped to attain an $8,800 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. As a first time recipient of this Adult Literacy grant we are excited to provide classes to our ESOL students. Thanks to our community partners backpacks, supplies and other school items will be provided to all registered students. “For the third year in a row I am so thankful to Bank of America Community Volunteers for gathering supplies and backpacks for AFLC,” says Alane Huet, Bank of America staff.

AWESOME ANGEL

A warm WELCOME to DR. MANNING

This school year will mark an important time of growth and development as AFLC embarks on a new chapter focused on strengthening AFLC’s role as a community connecting point for education. Over the last six years I have been honored to work with our talented and caring staff, dedicated volunteers and innovative community partners who join forces to work with local students and their parents to achieve their full potential. With agency friends and partners such as Devereux Florida, Foster Grandparents, Girl Scouts, Orange County Public Schools and Westside Tech, AFLC has truly served as a “Home Away from Home.” Together we are strengthening local families and our community by building the skills and confidence of individuals to achieve self-sufficiency and reach their dreams.  I have been blessed to be part of such a dynamic organization and I look forward to supporting AFLC’s mission with the new CEO, Dr John Manning, for years to come.

Ellen O’Connor, former CEO

I would like to thank everyone connected to AFLC for providing me with the opportunity to build on the strengths of a fabulous program. For those of you whom I have not yet had the opportunity to meet allow me to share a little about myself. I am married with two children, boy and girl twins and four dogs. I started my career teaching toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners. I have lived in Central Florida for 13 years, where I have been employed by both UCF and USF as a professor of education. Prior to moving here, I worked for the state of Massachusetts as a Regional Director for an agency that dealt with the delivery of services to children. Over the years my work has caused me to evaluate over four thousand classrooms. It is my intent to expand the educational services of AFLC to more fully serve the all the residents of Apopka. Within the year, I foresee AFLC extending service to the preschooler as well as the seniors in Orange County. Together, with a tremendously talented staff, we will build an educational hub that will focus on the needs of every resident of Apopka and beyond helping to enrich their quality of life and that of their community.

Dr. John P. Manning

WOW, What a Year!!! Kids in Motion students from this past academic year had an incredible academic growth. 90% of our students maintained their Grade Point Average at or above 2.5 and 95% of students passed the FCAT. With community support and the continued participation of parents 2012-2013 has been a very successful academic school year. Parents have even noticed a positive increase in their children’s behavior−more positive interaction amongst their peers. Your investment in our students is a commitment in their long term academic performance. Students are very excited to begin the 2013-2014 school year and KIM is prepared to continue to expand on each students full potential.

Welcome Back Kids in

Motion! This year the KIM program will focus on core standards

and making sure those children with low scores in math and reading increase by at least one grade level.

It takes a village

Many of our students will be first generation college students.
