Mr. Smarty Plants

John Mishler, Nursery Manager, joined the Linton’s team this past winter. John grew up on a 500 acre grain and hog farm near Nappanee which is where he developed his love for the outdoors. As a boy, John had a lot of pets, the favorite of which was a pet skunk named “Stinky”! Stinky was raised by the barn cats at the farm and never once sprayed in the six years John owned him.

He has three children. His son Dan is restoring old cabins and trails in Steamboat Springs Co. for the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. Emily is a senior at Purdue and Susannah is a Freshman also at Purdue. John has been with his life partner for 13 years.

John’s hobbies include gardening and trying to find “cool and unusual” plants for his shade garden. Other interests are bird watching (trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive pileated woodpecker), baking and cooking.

His work experience includes Garden Center Retail, Residential and Commercial

Landscape and Wholesale Nursery. John is a Master Gardener and member of the Niles Four

Flags Garden Club. While active, he was in charge of the Historic Niles Train Depot Garden built in 1893

for the Chicago World’s Fair. Some of the trees and roses remain from the original gardens. He was also project manager for the John Gipner (the gardener for the depot) Grave Site Restoration in Historic Silverbrook Cemetery.

John states that “Coming to Linton’s has given me the chance to use all my work experience and knowledge in one job. The favorite part of my job is learning how Linton’s operates and adding my knowledge to this established business.”

John operates by the motto “If better is possible, then good is not enough!” We are glad to have him part of our team.

Pumpkin Bowling was a SMASHING success! We are again partnering with ADEC, Inc. and the Elkhart Truth

for our annual Pumpkin Bowl, October 12 & 13. Come to our straw bale bowling alley, grab a pumpkin and ‘bowl’. The lane is set up until October 31st, pumpkins are only $1 and 100% of the proceeds goes to ADEC!

The best part is that you get to bowl until your pumpkin breaks up. Pumpkin Bowling is fun whether you are 4 or 84!

ADEC helps community members open their hearts, minds and doors by providing opportunities and inclusion for those we serve. By enhancing the lives of people with disabilities, we enrich our communities through the diversity that comes from inclusion.

So, grab your ‘bowling shoes’ and help us raise funds and awareness for ADEC!

Terrariums are the perfect fall and winter projects for those who loves to garden! They are fun and easy to make. First, select a container–any clear, container will work. A glass vase, a glass jar, a drinking glass, a fish tank, or even a hanging ornament. Make sure it’s big enough to show off the plants and a decoration or two. After selecting your container, place a thin layer of sand or pea gravel in the bottom to allow for drainage. Then place a layer of Activated Charcoal to prevent smells. The next layer is sphagnum peat which prevents the soil from sifting through. Finally your soil. If you are using houseplants stay with a potting mixture. If you choose a cactus or succulent you’ll want to use a sandy cactus soil.

Now comes the fun part–the plants! Some great terrarium-worthy choices are Prayer Plant, Pepperomia, Begonia, smaller leaved Ficus, and succulents. Be sure to include mosses as well. Don’t forget to add a bit of personal flair with some decoration.

Fairy garden or miniature décor is an excellent way to add some whimsey and interest

Water your terrarium sparingly and set it in a sunny window, but out of the direct sunlight. Your terrarium will naturally retain water, so check before watering. As plants grow you may want to change them out for new ones.

The Garden Centre staff at Linton’s Enchanted Gardens will be more than happy to help you create your own personal terrarium. Stop in and see us!

By: Ruth LintonFor quite a few years hand-tied and simple gatherings of florals have

captivated a heavily requested design style. Floral artistry design seems to be on the upswing and, in many cases, “roundy-moundy” is not the most preferred.

Naturals are dominating, and bark from various trees, as well a natural burlap, have made a huge impact in new floral trends. Texture is very important. Leucadendron, Banksia, and Protea fill the bill for exotic flowers while the very spectacular David Austin garden rose is now much in demand, known for both size and fragrance. New to Linton’s Garden Centre, the bushes are now available for purchase and also are growing on display in our center landscaped area.

Decorative wire adds both color and interest. Sparkle, glitz, and shiny are also trendy.

Watch for the up-coming usage of the Clematis flower in cut vase arrangements. With proper care as directed, the cut Clematis can last 7-10 days. Clematis is a member of the ranunculus family and well known locally for being a vine/ climbing garden favorite.

Succulents continue to be a favorite in arrangements. This family of thick-leaved plants add so much interest to arrangement- even bridal bouquets and wreaths- that there popularity continues. Linton’s faux succulents are created to even ‘fool’ Mother Nature! Our designers and display artists have captivated several exciting ideas to get your creative juices flowing. “Watch This!”

Linton’s invites you to tune into “Colorful Inspiration” each Saturday morning. You can find us on ABC57 at 7 am, WNDU16 at 530am and FOX28 at 6am. In this show Mark Linton features three segments: “Color by the Yard” features custom landscapes and tips for grouping and placing plants, trees and shrubs. “Every Bloomin’ Thing” features a selection of unusual plants, trees and shrubs in our Garden Centre and plant care information. “Your Style, Your Home” features Mark and Linton’s design team sharing decorating tips and ideas for your home.

We are also regularly featured on WNDU16 and WSBT22 as a local expert for both interior decorating and landscaping. Mark regularly gets to share his passion for plants and decorating as well as tips for all of us to use.

Of course, if you miss us, you can find the most recent show on our website or search YouTube for “Linton’s Enchanted.”

The experts at Linton’s

Enchanted Gardens donated $5,000 worth of landscaping to help restore the historic integrity of Clinton & Shundra Gilkie’s home. The plan was designed to beautify the exterior of the residence and tie-in with the time period of the Prairie Style house and its architecture. The plan features low-maintenance plantings which will provide color throughout the seasons. Potted Annual and Tropical flowers add an additional splash of color as do the custom florals that were created for the front porch.

The UFOs scheduled to be released for Test Sights from the Research Facility are:

Roswell at Linton’s? No, but it is a “Restricted Area” for serious UFO (Unusual Flowering Objects) plant collectors! At the landing gear of the alien space ship you’ll find the products from our ‘Research Facility’ in Bristol.

The cover-up has been blown and the whistle-blowers have demanded we disclose the presence of these results to the public. This area, previously off-limits, has been opened up to customers classified as ‘Top Plant Collectors.’ We are seeking ‘test sights’ to help our Research Facility. Each UFO has been properly identified and tagged with its unique statistics. Test Sights will be charged a fee to obtain the UFOs to cover discovery and development costs.
