DIRECTOR’S LETTERDIRECTOR’S LETTER

I am certainly glad that we finally had a real summer!! We watched as the Story Garden took on big roots and grew to gargantuan heights! Very cool. Pe-

ter Rabbit’s Garden was a boon for CHOW …fresh vegetables that yielded a bumper crop. The garden was always filled with families having fun. This year we accepted the beribboned trowel from the Junior League of Binghamton….we are now the owners and operators of that lovely space. Best of all, THE Gar-den Girl, Nancy Hargrave remains as the prime over-seer. Our Mary, Mary Quite Contrary! Our summer camps allowed major, exciting activities; our galleries were filled with visitors; membership soared and staff survived! Our annual Pastabilities bears men-tioning for its success. Food, auction, celeb chefs and sold out attendance was a joy! We are now in fall mode with both preschools in-creasing; new spaces have been allotted for UPK reg-istration; after school return students joined by new faces means another busy and productive year for our young entrepreneurs! The Girl Scout exhibit re-mains through March; the Play Nice playground is being creatively stenciled for pavement games; we

are researching and planning for a new and unique science exhibit and readying for a September shut-down to spruce up, brighten and revitalize the mu-seum. We welcome back our Day of Caring volun-teers who swarm the facility with expertise to the max! All this just for you. If you think this all sounds same as-same as, just per-ish the thought! No day is the same, no event is a repeat, every child brings a new breeze to the gal-lery, no staff member has the same habits and the daily weather system always brings a surprise. This menu of happenings is what makes us tick…makes us perpetuate the new, the bold, the unthinkable and the fun. It is what culls the support, the applause; the return visits and ignites the mind and spirit of thousands of children. So, as we fall into fall, look for a month long of Halloween hoots in October: Book Fest in November; special performances and programs, free daily programs and Mondays – open for everyone UNDER five! Also notice the fruits of our shut down labors and new paint on our exterior trim!!

COME OFTEN AND STAY LONG!

Our Fall Hours

Arts Partners NewsArts Partners News Arts Partners would like to thank everyone for their support over the last 10 years here at The Discovery Center! The Arts Partners Program has had the great privilege to support more than one hundred Arts in Education projects to schools in Broome and Tioga Counties over those 10 years. The DC and Arts Partners are thankful to the New York State Council on the Arts as well as the Roger L. Kresge Foundation for the years of support that allowed us to fund projects that brought in Artists from Dancers to Sculptors, from Writers to Weavers to work in the classroom with students of all ages from preschool to high school. These programs made a difference in these students’ lives with “outside the box” learning and the opportunity to see career paths in the Arts they may not have known existed. Unfortunately, the Local Capacity Building Program is changing in structure and location. The LCB Program will become part of the Decentralization program and be administered at the Chenango County Council of the Arts. For more infor-mation on their programs, call 607.336.2787 or visit www.chenangoarts.org.

Thank you! It has been a pleasure working with you all. Laura Hobbs, Arts Partners Coordinator
