Can we submit questions to the Zeitgeist poll?

-Aqua Berry

Yes, definitely! We’d love your questions about trends, current events and what’s important to you RIGHT NOW!

-KE

Alright.Who’s on this?

-KE

We need more animals pictures with big eyes because they are sooooooo cute!!!!!!

-ilovemybff9

KidzEra should make a project for kids who are into fiber arts—knitting, crochet, knotting, sewing, etc. There are some artists out here who use different media than the 2D artists most people know about!

-friendzyfriend

This is a fascinating idea! We would love to expand into lots of 3D art areas—you should definitely upload some fiber art pictures in the meantime. Start the fiber art revolution on KidzEra.com!!

-KE

I think KidzEra totally Rocks!!

Talk Back

Page 5: Fall 2011 Digital KidzEra

Aqua Berry says...Why hasn’t kidzera listened to any of the advice on Talk Back?

5

We just wanted to let you know that WE ARE LISTENING!There are a lot of changes happening at KidzEra HQ right now. We’ve been making KidzEra.com bigger, better and more fun. We really appreciate all the input and feedback you’ve given us over the last year. This is YOUR media, and we want to make it the best it can possibly be for YOU.

Chatting, friends, comments, profiles and points are the most talked about elements of KidzEra.com. We’ve taken all your feedback about that stuff to the awesome KidzEra developers, who are working really hard to incorporate the things everyone wants. It’s taking a while, because sweet things take time to make happen.

While they’re busy doing that, we’ll still be doing projects, contests, games, quizzes and lots and lots of art! Keep sending us art, thoughts—EVERYTHING! We look forward to seeing it.

Yours truly,

-The KE Team

little-ms-diva says...To KidzEra,PLEASE use our advice! We should really have a chatroom and also be able to earn prizes or something with our points. I know myself and others are totally clueless about what to do with our points. Thank you!!

monnnydawson says...You should really give out free wallpapers or kidzera keychains and/or pins for at least every 5,000 or 10,000 points earned.

little-ms-diva says...I think we should have a chatroom box and also a comment box! Hope my ideas get heard and used!!

Aqua Berry says…There should be a button where you can delete pics you submitted if you don’t want it there anymore. Also we should be able to comment on others things and give our judgement. By commenting we’re not trying to be mean, we’re trying to help them to get better at their skills!

Luv2draw says...I really like the idea of having a chat room. It would be great if the KidzEra members could get to know each other!

Kareen says...I think that it would be cool if we could trade our points for badges, like, for example the 100 points badge!

Arooba-Tuzahra says...How long is it gonna take to add features to use our points on? i have like 9060 and they are just useless :/

Yxrulz says...I think we should be able to have a friends list on KidzEra and we can chat with them and see if they’re online or not.

friendzyfriend says...Some changes to KidzEra that would be nice to have:1. Letting us comment on others’ submissions2. Ability to “follow” other users3. A more personalized profile4. A writer’s corner for nonfiction articles

SH57259 says...Everyone needs to stay in touch and so do we. Which is why we should have a chat thing where we get to add friends and chat.

rohlboy99 says...We should be able to write in our profile what we’re up to and people can comment so it is like a blog!

‘Sup, KidzEra Crew!

Yxrulz says...Perhaps each user could have a profile page named ‘My Profile’. On each user’s profile they could maybe upload a picture and share what their favorite things are and the things which they don’t like. A bit like a blog, we can post a comment on someone’s profile page and also post videos and stuff.

Blueberry lol says...I think the website shoud be as colorful and cool as the magzines, witih more pics and quizzes.

Tyra101 says...We need to send messages people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get on it!!!!!!!!!

YiXiu T.I was thinking of electric guitars and how cool they are. I drew the guitar using pencil and went over it with a black marker.

Music helps me to think deeply, since most songs have a message in them. The message may be a motivational one which inspires me to strive and just keep going in life.

Danielle C., Age 11I’ve always loved to draw mustaches, so I drew it and thought, “That’s an EPIC mustache right there.” So I sent it to KidzEra. I was so amazed to see I won!

I love drawing, writing, playing guitar and hanging out with my friends and family!

?SOS I am starting a healthy lifestyle change campaign in my school. A lot of

people joined and we agreed to do a healthy snack bar. We need ideas for what to sell. We want to donate the money to the school’s music and drama department. Our campaign can change the school’s lifestyle and diet, so please help me to come up with ideas for what to sell. Thank you!!

? My problem is that I want to have friends but I’m really shy. Every time I try to talk, the words get stuck in my mouth. :(

My advice is...just be youself and forget that you don’t know those people, and become friends!

Advice submitted by: monnnydawson via KidzEra.com

My advice is...I used to be shy myself until I got out there a little more and participated in everything I could until I made some friends who had the same interests. Now I’m mainly confident with a few butterflies in the tummy once in a while... Maybe this will work for you too! If the words get stuck in your mouth, it must feel horrible, so I suggest you keep trying to talk louder and louder! Or maybe if you can’t bear to stare at someone while you talk, close your eyes! Hope this helps :D

Advice submitted by: Aqua Berry via KidzEra.com

My advice is...just talk to them. If they don’t really like you, then maybe they aren’t the type of friends you need!

Advice submitted by: SH57259 via KidzEra.com

My advice is...since you’re donating the money to the music and drama departments, how about you base your foods on that? For example, musical salad: a salad full of the normal stuff and carrots shaped as musical notes! Hope this helps :D

Advice submitted by: Aqua Berry via KidzEra.com

My advice is...to sell healthy foods which you know lots of people in your school like. It may be a fruit or a healthy smoothie! Perhaps you can print out flyers promoting healthy eating and how good it is for you. Include something about their wonderful taste as well. Good luck! :)

Advice submitted by: Yxrulz via KidzEra.com

My advice is...get things like fruit leathers, mini pies, whole grain Goldfish or stick to the original snack: plain old fruits!

?

My advice is...ask your parents to go there on a holiday, and visit your friends and neighbors.

Advice submitted by: Yxrulz via KidzEra.com

My advice is...just stay calm and get excited! I’m going to middle school next year!

I miss my old home so much. I lived there for two years and it was the best place I’ve ever lived. It’s a three hour drive from my current home and I haven’t been there for three years, but I really want to go back, play with my best friends again and have the great time I used to have every day. What can I do?

My problem is... I’m moving to middle school and I don’t know what to expect, so please help! I really need it. Thanks.

Waving girl art submitted by: Adelle W., Age 10, Walt Disney Magnet School, Chicago, Illinois

School art submitted by: Alex M., Age 11, Hugh Roe O’Donnell Elementary School, Boston, Massachusetts Advice submitted by: Peacenpandas via KidzEra.com

My advice is...going to middle school can be tough, but many things can make it easier. When you first get there and take in all the new smells and sights, try to relax. Relaxation can help you stay focused and on task. When making new friends, make sure that they’re people you actually want to be with—hanging with the wrong people can lead you onto the wrong path. Be yourself, don’t try to change yourself for attention purposes—it keeps your mind away from what you’re really supposed to be focusing on.

Advice submitted by: Yxrulz via KidzEra.com

My advice is...you should ask your dad or mom to drive you there once a month or ask them for pics of your old house. If that doesn’t help, then decorate your new house just like your old house. You can also keep a pet for companionship so you won’t think about your old house so much.

Advice submitted by: Andrieta via KidzEra.com

My advice is...convince your parents to go back. Or try to make new friends in your new home, then you might feel much better. Talk with your old friends on the phone, too, and you will see that you will feel much better.

Adventure at Krakatau!

Krakatau is aqua,Like the perfect creation of God’s clear ocean water.A pair of wet flippers flung to the corners of the boat,And the squirming school of fish, racing through the corals.

Krakatau is white,Like the ascending bubbles as we splash into the sea,The shocking encounter of humans and jellyfish,And the twinkling stars in the silent, beautiful night.

Krakatau is black,Like the unending streams of black sand on Krakatau shore,The desire for a sugary, iced Coca-Cola,And the burnt marshmallow inside the burning red fire.Submitted by: Bo Ra H., Grade 7/8, Bandung AllianceInternational School, Bandung, Indonesia

Colors of Krakatau

Panting, the group started hiking up the dusty volcano. I heard a student whine, “Do we HAVE to climb all the way up there?!” Unexpectedly, we saw the volcano puff up dark grey smoke. We were witnessing a Krakatau eruption.

It looked like a huge ghost flying out of the volcano. People pointed at the shocking sight with panicked looks on their faces. Students covered their noses with their shirts and others were coughing because they could no longer take the strong stench of the ghost’s bad breath. People at the top started darting back down, looking for safety. Other people were much calmer and started clicking away with their cameras.

The tour guide instructed, “Okay everyone, stay calm. This eruption is minor. It won’t hurt anyo-“ BOOOOM! The earth shook beneath us, interrupting the guide. People were a lot more nervous now. Some people, including me, were too stunned to even move our muscles. The tour guide just dashed off, leaving our group behind, not knowing what to do next. There was another BOOM. The black ghost was flying furiously out of the volcano, shooing us away. “GO AWAY, SCRAM!” it seemed to be saying. This was definitely our cue to leave.Submitted by: Sandra Y., Grade 8, Bandung Alliance International School, Bandung, Indonesia

Krakatau’s Black Ghost

The seventh and eighth graders at Bandung Alliance International School recently took a field trip to the volcanic island Krakatau. What started as a normal school field trip turned into an exciting event they will never forget!

Krakatau Fast Facts »Krakatau is a volcanic island in Indonesia made of a’a lava,

which typically erupts at temperatures of 1000 to 1100 degrees Centigrade (1832-2012 degrees Fahrenheit).

»The island exploded in 1883 with what is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history. At least 40,000 people died in the explosion.

» Further explosions since 1927 have created a new island in the same location, which is called Anak Krakatau, which is Indonesian for child of Krakatau. This island grows 16 feet each year.

The volcano launched out rocks and cried lava. The energy and aliveness I felt in my body while running away made me feel like I was flying. The volcano was basically the whole island, so people were jumping off the top of the volcano into the water. The sound of them smacking the water was so irritating to my ears. Everyone was screaming and swimming away from this horrific natural disaster. The people ran so fast that they created a breeze.

The volcano shook so violently! It looked like many people were dancing, they were shaking so viciously. I ran to the “dancing” people and helped them shimmy their way off the island. In the midst of all this, I just wanted to get into that water! It was so hot I thought I was going to begin to melt.

Janet, one of the girls I was helping shimmy off the island, laid on the ground and began to roll down the volcano! I thought she was crazy, others thought she was on fire! But I soon realized that it was faster than running, safer from the falling ash, and cooler, because of the cold, wet sand against your skin. So, I jumped onto my stomach and began to roll. Soon everyone was rolling down the volcano! Thankfully, because of Janet, we all survived that frightening time on Krakatau Island.Submitted by: Victoria N., Grade 7/8, Bandung Alliance International School, Bandung, Indonesia

Art advice, how-to’s and insight

My example is a picture of a stereo with instruments. I named it “Reality Mixed with Fantasy”, because some of the objects in the picture are real and some are fantasy.

I started by first making a sketch that has no detail or color. I like to create in a kind of comic style, where things are not very realistic, with light and dark values.

Then I add color. When I add color, I make sure that the main focus of the picture is always the one with the most detail and most color, just so that it draws attention.

Then I make everything else. And that is basically how I create art!

[About Wizafer

What do you want to be when you grow up? I honestly don’t know. Doctor, lawyer, engineer or architect—that is for me to decide when the time comes.

What inspires you? Lines, because when you think about it, a line can change and become anything. When I draw, I really don’t have an idea planned out. All I do is start making lines and then look around and form the lines into some-thing else.

What’s your favorite color? Black. I like black and how black with anything looks awesome. Black and yellow. Black and red. Black and green. All those colors go with black.

KidzEra is proud to feature Wizafer! Wizafer has won T-Design and been ranked highly in Top Artist, so we interviewed him about his creative process. He even made a custom piece just for KidzEra! [ [

books

Coraline is about a little girl named, of course, Coraline! She is a lonely little girl with two busy parents. She’s very sad because she just moved away from her old house and friends. She thinks everything’s fine when she finds an alternate world like her own. She thinks it’s like a dream, but it’s not. The “other mother” in the alternate world wants Coraline to stay with her forever. She steals Coraline’s parents and traps her there! Read the book to find out how she will escape the “other mother” and win her parents back.

My favorite part was when Coraline finds the door to the alternate world because she gets delicious food and has fun all the time. It’s everything she’s ever wanted!

I recommend this book to 4th, 5th and 6th grade readers. It is a great book because it is suspenseful and exciting!

Book review submitted by: Mikayla W., Age 10, Como Montessori School, Fort Worth, Texas

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

For fans of science fiction, as well as blood and gore, this is the book for you. In a futuristic society, where the Capitol controls everyone and rebellion is forbidden, every year, one boy and one girl from each district are sent to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. The 24 tributes are forced to fight each other until there is one person left surviving to be crowned victor, solely for the entertainment of the Capitol.

Katniss Everdeen, 16, lives in District 12, the poorest of the districts, and has volunteered to take her little sister’s place in the Games. Go on an adventure with Katniss as she tries to survive the Games while looking death in the eye, and making choices that could cost her her life. Fans of The Hunger Games will surely love the sequel, Catching Fire, and the third and final book, Mockingjay.

BOOK REVIEWS

The Lost Hero is an exciting adventure book that exceeds the standard set in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

The fifth Percy Jackson book is the last in the series. The Titan war is over, the gods have prevailed and psychic cows no longer follow Anabeth.

Right from the beginning, trouble is brewing. Jason, a strange half-blood who uses Roman names for the gods and calls satyrs “fauns,” appears at camp at an incredibly late age of 15. Anabeth, who was searching for her boyfriend Percy Jackson, finds him. Yes, that’s right—our hero, Percy, is gone, and we’ve replaced him with a boy named Jason who is a son of Zeus. Leo (son of Hephestus) and Piper (daughter of Aphrodite, with an unusual ability to convince people to obey her) are found with Jason, who seems to think that he has only just appeared on the day of the rescue.

The three new demi-gods (also known as half bloods, or the child of a godly parent and a mortal) begin a quest to stop the rise of the Giants, save Hera and retrieve Jason’s lost memory. This is all in one fast-paced week! They encounter an ice princess, Medea, a few veggie burgers and a new race of demi-gods, all with the extraordinary sense of humor found in the previous Percy Jackson books.

Hey, they’re just trying to stop “the mother of all bad guys” from awakening— what can go wrong?

The Fright Edition

Russell Crannaker glanced up and down the alley. He was alone. Perfect. He could practice in peace. Putting up his arms, Russell staggered forward. He rolled back his eyes so only the whites were showing. Then he began to moan.

Fantastic! He was going to be great as Frankenstein’s monster – the best ever. Russell relaxed and grinned. Halloween should be all right this year after all. He moaned and lurched forward again.

Frankenstein! Boy, would he love to actually be Frankenstein’s monster for a while. Then he’d show that Eddie a thing or two. He could see it now: Eddie kneeling in front of him, whining, begging, and pleading for mercy. He could hear Eddie’s voice—

“Please, Russell. Please don’t hurt me.” Russell smiled. It was a pleasant daydream. But his smile quickly turned into a frown. Something was wrong—Eddie was still talking! “Oh no, save me, save me, it’s the horrible Crankenstein! Hey Crannaker, what’s up? You lose your marbles?” Russell opened his eyes and turned pale. Eddie, six inches taller than Russell and made mostly of mouth and muscle, was standing at the end of the alley. “Come here, loser,” he sneered. “I’ll make you really look like Frankenstein.”

Russell started to shake. So far that day, Eddie had punched him, called him names, and smashed him in the face with a

cream-filled cupcake. Under the circumstances, only one thing made sense. He ran.

“Hey Crannaker!” bellowed Eddie in his sixth-grader voice. “What’s the matter? You scared?”

Scared? Of course Russell was scared. These days he lived in fear of what Eddie would do next.

Russell stopped running once he had reached a dead end street. It was lined with shops he had never seen before. They were closed – all except one. Directly in front of him, a candle burning in its window, crouched a store that took his breath away. The sign in the curved window, written in old-fashioned letters, read:

Glancing over his shoulder to make sure his enemy was nowhere in sight, he opened the door. He entered the shop and was amazed at what he saw.

“Why are you here?” said an old, ancient voice.

Russell shivered. “I… I just came to look around.” The man shook his head.

“Young man, no one comes into my shop to just ‘look around.’ Get to the point. What do you need?”

Russell shrugged. The old man closed his eyes and put his palm on Russell’s forehead. After that, the old man turned around and disappeared into the darkness. The old man came back from the darkness and handed Russell a box. “Use that door,” the man said, pointing to the side door. “It will get you home faster.”

Once he got outside he noticed he was in the same alley from earlier that day. He slowly and nervously unraveled his fingers from his tight grip.

Russell smiled. He was very fond of monsters. Using his nail, he slit the tape that held the box shut. Inside was a ring made out of cheap metal. There was a green emerald carved into the shape of a monster’s face that sat on top of the cheap metal. As soon as he put it on, a chill ran through his body.

In the bottom of the box lay a neatly folded piece of paper. It was old, yellowed and crinkled as he unfolded it. It was the instructions to the monster’s ring. How would you work a monster’s ring? Russell thought.

The paper read:

How to Work the Monster’s RingTo change yourself into a hideous monster, place the ring on the ring finger of your right hand. Grasp it with your left hand. Turn the ring to the left as you repeat this chant:

Powers Dark and Powers Bright,I call you now, as my right.

Unleash the magic of this ring,And change me into a monstrous thing!

The strength of the spell depends on how many twists you give the ring:

Twist it once, you’re horned and haired;Twist it twice, and fangs are bared;Twist it thrice? No one has dared!

Use with caution, and never on the night of the full moon. To return to normal, turn the ring to the right, repeating this chant:

Powers Bright and Powers Dark,Hark the one who bares your mark.

Let me now to my shape return to me,And make me as I used to be!

Russell did not pay attention to the directions. He threw the paper that had the directions into the garbage. He did not read the last part of the paper, which had the antidote for the spell.

After the spell, he did not feel different, but his appearance was startling. He had turned into a hideous monster.

Russell walked downstairs to have dinner but as soon as his mother saw him she started throwing things at him, screaming, “Go away!”

He ran to the bathroom. When he saw himself in the mirror he was so startled he jumped out of his bedroom window, and forever was the hideous monster of his town.

He was holding a small black box. Across the top, in flaming green letters, were the words:
