As Continuing Education and Professional Studieslaunches into its 10th year under my leadership, I wantto share with you, our customers, the exciting changestaking place during this coming year, and thank you foryour loyalty in choosing Hostos as your “continuingeducation institution of choice”.

Together with Peter Mertens, newly named Executive Director, and a mostdedicated and passionate staff, along with support from the head of ournew Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, CarlosMolina, we have distinguished ourselves with award-winning programs,developed our satellite campus, CUNY in the Heights, under stalwart lead-ership of Aldrin Bonilla, the site's director, inaugurated Jobs Plus in EastHarlem, as well as receiving a federally-funded grant offering AlliedHealth training, all geared towards empowering our community to elevatetheir earning potential and to obtain more rewarding careers.

Most importantly, our President, Félix V. Matos Rodríguez has tirelesslysupported our mission resulting in even more innovative programs thatmeet the needs of our community, and ultimately creating the Divisionof Continuing Education and Workforce Development.

As we continue to grow and evolve, I am pleased to announce the newDivision of Continuing Education and Workforce Development will bemoving to its own building by Spring 2012. the Allied Health Career Pipeline

Program. The program will begin

with training to become a Certified

Nursing Assistant. A career-focused

job training program for low-income

individuals to gain careers in the

allied health professions.

The Pipeline Program will provide

enrolled students with all the neces-

sary services and support to com-

plete the training course and intern-

ship, pass the state certification

examination, and become employed

Viridis Learning is an innovative provider of e-learning focused onprofessions in the emerging green economy such as renewable energy

and energy efficiency trades training programs.

All courses teach practical, jobsite-ready skills, andcorrespond to well-recognized professional creden-tials, established by the Home Builders Institute(HBI), the educational arm of the NationalAssociation of Home Builders (NAHB), to bench-mark skill development and enable qualified candi-dates to seek positions of greater responsibility.Upon course completion and passing of the finalexam, students will be awarded their credentials.

Courses offered:

1. Residential Construction Management $2000(8 segments)The RCS training program consists of eight courses geared toward the up-and-comingfield superintendent as well as current site management personnel. The training teachespractical, jobsite-ready skills and offers a professional designation upon completion indi-cating that a student is dedicated to advancing within the residential construction sector.

Prerequisites: Students should have 2-3 years experience in the residentialconstruction sector prior to enrollment in this course.

2. Advanced Residential Construction Superintendent $1200(3 tracks, each 4 segments)The ARCS program enables students to select between three tracks: the professionalgrowth track, focused on communication and customer service, the building leaderstrack, focused on delegation and conflict resolution, and the technical proficiency track,focused on quality methods and evaluation.

Prerequisites: Students should have 4-5 years experience in the residentialconstruction sector prior to enrollment in this course.

3. Weatherization Specialist $2500The Weatherization program teaches the latest techniques to improve energy conservationfor residential and commercial buildings, including insulating, thermography, air sealing andtesting. Participants will also gain knowledge of general construction skills, such as basictool handling and safety, job site safety, carpentry basics, roofing, dry walling, and building.

Prerequisites: Basic English and mathematics skills. No prior industry experience isneeded.

4. Green Building Basics $7000An intensive pre-apprenticeship trades training designed for adults seeking to enter theresidential construction sector administered in conjunction with the Home BuildersInstitute (HBI), the educational arm of the primary trade association of the residentialconstruction industry.

Prerequisites: Basic English and mathematics skills. No prior industry experience isneeded.

This course is designed to help students prepare forthe High School Equivalency examination. Studentswill learn test-taking strategies, build reading com-prehension skills, and study the 5 GED contentareas. Topics covered will include learning how toread visuals; use of a Casio fx-260 calculator; andhow to fill out alternate format questions on themathematics section of the exam.

This course will introduce students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide

certificate, or RN, LPN licenses to the basic procedures used for obtaining blood

from veins and capillaries. It will provide skill building for those who are already

in the health care profession (coordinator's permission required). Students will

learn the skills and responsibilities of the professional phlebotomist. Topics include

standard precautions, collecting blood specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing cap-

illary punctures, and more. This course is a combination of theory and practical training. In

class, live veinipunctures will be a component of this course. Participating students and volun-

teer subjects must sign an "Acknowledgement of Risk" form. On successful completion, students

will be able to sit for the NHA certification exam.

Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervisionof a dentist, to administer intraoral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxideanalgesia to a patient who is 18 years of age or older. Hostos Community

College’s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering a continuing education coursefor certification in Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia.

This course, in compliance with the new law in New York, will facilitate the New York Statelicensed dental hygienist to apply for a restricted certificate in local infiltration anesthe-sia/nitrous oxide analgesia. The program will be comprised of lectures (30 hours) and hands-on clinical application (15 hours) under faculty supervision.

Upon the successful completion of this course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply forcertification through the New York State Education Department.

Participants who do not meet clinical competency for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide expe-riences will not be permitted to challenge the written certification exam and will be requiredto retake the entire course at their own expense.

Tuition Discount:Register for 2 or more classes: 5% discount. Seniors (62 years or older): 15% discount. HCC stu-dents, staff, and alumni with valid ID card: 15% discount. Note: Only one discount applies.

Registration Fee:There is a non-refundable $20 registration fee per person, per semester.

Tuition and Fees:Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students are not considered officially reg-istered until they have completed their tuition payment. Most courses require the purchase ofbooks. Students must pay in full when registering. No personal checks accepted.

Changes in Program:The Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development reserves the right to cancelcourses, to make substitutions in faculty, and to change the days, times, and locations of class-es if necessary.

We are not responsible for misprints in catalogues, brochures and/or advertisements. In the eventof an error, we will make every effort to provide you with corrected information.
