In 1952, City Parkdirector Ellis Labordeand park board memberAllen Generes attendedthe National Park andRecreation Conventionin Montreal. While in Canada, the pair saw and admired the floral clock innearby Westmount Park. Upon returning to the Crescent City, Generesdecided to donate a similar clock to the park. The Mayor of Montreal graciously provided the plans and the park staff built the clock at a cost of $2,000. Located on Lelong Avenue – near the park entrance leading towhat’s now the New Orleans Museum of Art – the clock was a popularCity Park attraction. The oversized hands proved irresistible for climbingchildren. This fact, along with time and acts of vandalism, took a toll onthe clock’s mechanical parts. The broken clock was dismantled in 1982.

Bob Becker, CEO

As we head into fall, thePark is winding up manysummer activities. Tennis campis completed. Zulu held itsannual picnic event. We hostedthe AAU Junior Olympics whichbrought over 12,000 athletes tothe Park for a week. The Parkserved as the track and field andfield hockey venue while otherevents were held throughout thecity. Friends had a highly suc-cessful event at the amusementpark and Storyland, and theGarden continued its popularThursday night concert series.

Fall promises to be equally asbusy with many road races andevents such as Ghosts in the Oaksand perhaps a few more movieshoots.

The Park ended its fiscal yearon June 30th and from a financialpoint of view the Park had a goodyear, thanks to tight budget con-trols and unusually dry weather at critical times. This helpedmake up for the bad weather weexperienced in FY 09-10 whichnegatively impacted the Parkfinancially. As I have reportedbefore, the State removed us fromthe General Fund budget twoyears ago, leaving us fundamen-tally with only the funds generated from the tax on slotmachines at the Fairgrounds. Thus for the new fiscal year, FY 11-12, we must raise 84% ofour operating revenue from theactivities in the Park. This is avery difficult funding formula and we hope that as the State’sfinancial picture improves we will be returned to the State’s regular operating budget. Let ushope for good weather!
