Principles of Fun 5

Be a role model

Children look up to you, be a positive role model

Show the children you enjoy being physically active and eating healthy

Keep instruction/management time to a minimum

Give clear and consise instructions o Ex: “When I say go, quietly walk to the field and do 10 jumping jacks…Go!”

Reinforce good behavior

Give positive reinforcement for cooperative behavior and good social skills

Emphasize good behavior rather than focusing on bad behavior

Never stop an activity or single out a participant for doing something incorectly

Encourage non competitiveness

Remind children to challenge themselves to do better

Motivate children using words such as “ahead” vs. “win”

Emphasize all inclusiveness

Get away from picking teams

Use mingle-mingle to create teams

During activity time, participants should be…

Safe, Active, & Motivated

Most importantly, have FUN!

Tips for Group Leaders

Activity Hall of Shame

Being picked last for teams Standing in line waiting for a turn Fitness as a punishment Focus on star athletes Grouping by gender Sharing 1 ball with 30 close friends Big people throwing balls at little people Elimination games Inappropriate sized equipment

When giving directions…

Use a moderate tone (don’t yell), with large groups, use hand signals

Say it once

o When you say directions once, the children will learn to listen the first time

80% will get it, 20% won’t

o The 20% who don’t get the directions, will follow the 80%

Only give attention to those who listen, and the rest will follow

o Praise the children who follow the directions immediately, for example, “I like how you

partnered up so quickly, you may take a raffle ticket”

When playing…

Keep games non-competitive (focus on self-improvement)

o For example, instead of competing against the other team, encourage children to

compare their improvement between the first and second round

Make sure games include everyone

o Encourage the children who usually sit aside to play the game

Disguise fitness in games

o For example, add sit-ups or push-ups to the macarena

Use positive reinforcement

o Praise good behavior

And most importantly…

Be a role model!

Super Snack Book

Objective: Children will create a booklet of super snacks to bring home Materials:

• Large construction paper • Markers, crayons • Recipes for children – print the recipes from the Food and Fun After School

Recipe and Taste Test Packet and copy to make books • Blank paper • Stapler

Instructions:

1. Ask children to name some of their favorite snacks – are they “super snacks” or “slow” snacks? (Explain that super snacks are made from healthy foods like fruits and veggies, whole grains and milk products, while slow snacks have more sugar, fat and salt than healthy nutrients. Remind children that snacks with trans fats are “no!” snacks.)

2. Remind children that we want to choose super snacks because they give us energy and nutrients to play, learn, and grow.

3. Tell the group that they will be making a book of super snacks to bring home. 4. Instruct them to select a color, fold the construction paper in half and decorate the

front cover. 5. As time allows, invite children to decorate the recipe pages (younger children may

need help reading the food lists; give them simple instructions such as “draw your favorite fruit here”.)

6. Have children write their own list of favorite super snacks on a blank page, or create a class list and copy to put in the book.

Tip: Add the parent handout “Snacks: a Bridge Between Meals” to the book 7. Send the books home to give parents ideas of snacks to serve at home.

New Game Ideas

“Food Group Cleanup”

Roll up balls of construction paper and label them with a food name (chicken, apple, rice, mango, broccoli).

Amounts of foods relative to servings recommended (i.e. more grains than fats, oils, sugars)

5 Boxes each labeled with one of the major food groups

Kids pick up the construction paper balls and put them in the correct food group.
