NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4), was directed to proceed to the Gulf of Mexico Sept. 13 and take station off the Texas coast, prepared to render support to civil authorities in the wake of Hurricane Ike as needed. Three ships, Nassau, USS Ponce (LPD 15), and USS Bataan (LHD 5), were ordered Sept. 12 to increase readiness for possible disaster response support. Nassau was already at sea conducting routine operations, and was first directed south to operate off the Florida coast before receiving orders to move into the Gulf of Mexico. The amphibious transport dock Ponce will get underway Sept. 14. The amphibious assault ship Bataan has been ordered to remain in a prepared-to-deploy status, ready to get underway within 24 hours, if needed. Although there has been no specific tasking for these three ships, their at-sea readiness provides options for Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Commander, U.S. Joint Forces

Command and Commander, U.S. Northern Command.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) discussed the importance of voting in a video message Sept. 30. "For our Sailors and our families, get to the polls and vote. If you can't get there, make sure that you're working with your voting assistance officers to ensure that you can have an absentee ballot and be able to vote that way," Adm. Gary Roughead, CNO, said. CNO reminded Sailors and their families that it is their Constitutional right as American citizens to vote for the candidate they would like to be their commander in Chief. “Our role is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic and to abide and obey the orders of the commander in chief,

regardless of who that commander in chief may be. We have to keep that in mind. That's what the American people expect of us, and that's the code by which we live," Roughead Said. CNO encouraged Sailors and their families to make sure they are registered to vote, especially if they are using an absentee ballot. Go to www.fvap.org for registration, absentee ballots and information about voting.

Hi Shipmates,

We are fast approaching the time to elect our next president. Be sure and get out and vote for the candidate of your choice. When the election is over we must unite and come together and support our newly elected president. That will be crucial in helping our country through troubling times and to maintain our strength in the world of nations.

Your association is stepping forward to increase its strength by inviting members of the AGC Flagship Alliance to become members of the USS Mount McKinley Association.

A couple of months ago I was contacted by the Secretary of the AGC Flagship Alliance asking if we would welcome members of their Alliance to join our Association. Their membership has declined to about 144 and they could no longer hold reunions or continue as an active group as no one would step forward to work or help out. Age and illness is taking a toll on the few members who did most of the work.

Our membership at the recent reunion in Reno enthusiastically agreed to invite and welcome former members of the AGC Flagship Alliance as Associate Members. Our Constitution and By-Lays allow for any shipmate of any sister AGC to become Associate Members.

Did you notice one reason for the demise of the Alliances? It is because no one would step forward to help. Fortunately we do not have that

problem. Our members have always been ready to help us--from the Treasurer and Membership Secretary; who do the backbone of work to the Masthead Editor which keeps you informed of happenings, to the other Officers and Directors who provide the leadership to keep us going. In addition there are important duties performed by others that make our annual reunions the success they are. We are shipmates working together to continue the friendship and camaraderie of shipmates of the USS Mount McKinley and her sister AGC's.

We continue to have former shipmates find us and join our association. Many learn about us from listing of our reunions in both the American Legion and VFW magazines. In addition we mail notices about our reunions to numerous newspapers throughout the US. Several recent new members read about us in their local newspapers.

To help us reach and locate more former shipmates please send the name and address of your local newspaper to Dwight Janzen. If you can provide the name of a contact person, that would be helpful. Either send to Dwight via e-mail at [email protected] or mail to him at E 2515 N Altamont Blvd, Spokane, WA 99202.

Dwight is one of our members who is always stepping forward to help our Association.

Thanks Dwight.

That's it for now, but one more word,

Keep Sailing Shipmates

I met Bud Shreeves 2/1/44 in Fort Pierce Florida. He was an Iowa farm boy, and I was a truck driver from Zillah Washington.

We took small boat training in Fla. I was the coxswain, and Shreeves was my signalman and forward boat hook. Our Engineer-Davis went AWOl in Philly , because our boat was 1st forward, starboard side, and we were always 1st in the water and last to be picked up. The Mt Mac was usually underway when we were being picked up. On one occasion Shreeves didn’t get the Bow hooked up and we were being towed backward. Shreeves had a temper, so I didn’t know if he did that on purpose, because he was mad at me. On another occasion we were to pick up Admiral Halsey, Shreeves was my engineer. As our boat was lowered Shreeves broke the sea lock on the salt water valve and another boat was sent to get Halsey.

On our 1st mission in Pelliau, Shreeves and I saw our 1st dead Japanese soldier. It made us both It made us both It made us both It made us both realize we were in a war.realize we were in a war.realize we were in a war.realize we were in a war.

While the ship was at sea We spent most of our time in the

landing craft. The boats were in a nest and covered with a tarp. The boats were 46 ft long, so we had plenty of room. Shreeves was a master at getting stuff. He would get 100 proof alcohol from Sick Bay, commandeer grapefruit juice, food, and we had a good ’ol time thanks to Bud.

On our 1st trip to Hawaii we were exposed to 8% beer. Thanks to Bud we had a good supply at the beach where we were practicing landing in very high surf.

Shreeves and I served as crew on 20mm cannons during air raids. On one occasion Shreeves was firing the guns and nearly shot our officer who happened to get in front of the gun. Food or something was slopped on the deck. The gun went down and turned. Fortunately Shreeves did not fire the gun. Not much later Not much later Not much later Not much later we were taken off the gun crewwe were taken off the gun crewwe were taken off the gun crewwe were taken off the gun crew.

Shreeve loved guns. Our boat had two 50 cal. Machine guns on the stern mounted to turn a full circle. During an air raid in Lingian Gulf, Shreeves went nuts trying to shoot down a plane a least 1000 ft high.

We were in Hollandia, New

Guinea and our boat was assigned to haul supplies to ships around the Bay. Good ’ol Shreeves managed to steal some beer and hide it in the boat bilge. We drank the beer and got loaded. It got dark and we were lost, so we spent the night in the boat. We made up a story about being on duty all night and got away with it!

We were always the duty boat. Shreeves got tired of sleeping in the boat and being on duty 24 hours. He requested transfer to the signal division after the last Lauzon invasion. He got the transfer. This left me short handed for a good crew, so I transferred to Radar division.

We still went on liberty together. In Hawaii Shreeves got loaded and refused to go back to the Ship. I called him dirty names and he chased me. The Shore Patrol caught us and took us back to the Ship.

On 1/8/46 Shreeves had an appendix attack. We were on the way to Japan with the Far East Advisory Commission. Shreeves had his appendix removed at sea, on the Mt Mac.

These are a few things I remember, These are a few things I remember, These are a few things I remember, These are a few things I remember, Shreeves was a very good friend, Shreeves was a very good friend, Shreeves was a very good friend, Shreeves was a very good friend, and shipmateand shipmateand shipmateand shipmate---- I will never forget I will never forget I will never forget I will never forget him.him.him.him.

A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game, took it upon himself to explain to an old Navy veteran sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation. "You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one," the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon, our spaceships have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with DSL, BPS, light-speed processing .... and," pausing to take another drink of beer.... The old vet took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young, .. so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little twit, what are you doing for the next generation?" The applause was deafening. Don't you just love old vets...? Okay, who put a stop payment on my reality check?

Plan to be spontaneous, tomorrow.

Smile, it's the second best thing you can do with your lips.

The USS MOUNT MCKINLEY ASSOCIATION lost a valued and dedicated shipmate on September 30, 2008.

I had the pleasure of working with Dick Armstrong Dick Armstrong Dick Armstrong Dick Armstrong for many years. He worked endless hours for your association. Several years ago we purchased microfiche files of all the men who served on the Mount McKinley from 1944 until 1970. Dick reviewed all of these and entered more than 5000 names, years of service, rate and division in a data base. This file exists on our web site under the heading “Dicks Big Red List” Dick also served as Membership Secretary, before the position became official. He printed and mailed dues notices each year to all members and maintained a computer list of all members, including all the information contained on our membership roster.

Dick’s Wife and Helpmate, Viv, was a long time performer at our annual reunions. Viv and Billie Allen, Jack Allen's Wife had a gift giving routine that was always a big hit at our reunions

Dick and Vivian attended the Reno reunion. His enjoyment was as usual,

Obvious.

Dick, old Shipmate, may your sail be full of wind as you sail to your reward.

Farewell old friend, Bill Ellis

Veterans/Retirees Focus

Military Veterans are now

lawfully permitted to render a salute during the hoisting,

lowering or passing of the U.S. Flag.

The formal enabling language was included in the

fiscal 2008 National Defense

Authorization Act ( Section # 594)signed earlier this year

by the President.

It amends the U.S. code to

read, “ Members of the Armed Forces and Veterans

who are present but not in

uniform may render a military salute, when in the

presence of the U.S. Flag”

“All other persons present,”

it continues, “should face

the flag and stand at attention with their right

hand over the heart, or if

applicable, remove their headdress with their right-

hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being

over the heart.”
