Opening Convocation and Dedication ofthe Monmouth University Library

September 13, 2006

Once the summer cottage of metals magnate Murry Guggenheim and his wife, Leonie, the Guggenheim Mansion was donated to Monmouth College in 1960. Following modifications to convert the home into a college library, it was dedicated on September 24, 1961.

Renovations to the Guggenheim wing of the library were completed in 2005, as the second phase of a $14 million restoration project of the Monmouth University Library and the stunning transformation of this premier educational facility was lauded by the Monmouth County (NJ) planning board as one of the “outstanding examples of planning excellence in Monmouth County.”

Special guests at the dedication ceremony included: Ms. Mary Weir, President, Monmouth University Library Association; Ms. Joan Bernstein, President, New Jersey Library Association; and Ms. Leslie Burger, President, American Library Association.

PASSWOrD POLICyPasswords are an important aspect of computer security. They are the front line of protection for user accounts. A poorly chosen password may result in the compromise of network resources. As such, all users of information systems of the Monmouth University network (including contractors and vendors with access to systems) are responsible for taking the appropriate steps, as outlined below, to select and secure their passwords.

• All users (employees, students, temporary employees, and temporary staff) are required to have a unique user ID and password.• All passwords (e.g., email, web, desktop computer, etc.)must be changed at least every ninety (90) days. • All passwords must be changed after the initial login.• Password changes should be unique from previouspasswords.• Passwords must not normally be shared with others.• Passwords should never be written down or stored on-line in clear text.

General Password Construction Guidelines:

• Passwords should be at least 6 to 8 characters long.• Do not base your password on any items of personalinformation.• Do not use a password that is a common usage word.• Try to create passwords that can be easily remembered. One way to do this is create a password based on a song title, affirmation, or other phrase.

If an account or password is suspected to have been compromised, immediately report the incident to the Network Computing Services Help Desk (732-923-HELP) and change all passwords.

Please see the complete password policy for more information.

Kudos for Monmouth UOnce again, the Princeton Review recently included Monmouth University in its list of the “Best 361 Colleges” in the United States, a list that includes only fifteen percent of the nation’s four-year institutions and just eight others from New Jersey, including: Princeton, Rutgers, Drew, NJIT, College of New Jersey, Seton Hall, Rider and Stevens Institute of Technology.

The U.S. News and World Report, in its annual rankings of colleges and universities, placed Monmouth 62nd among Northeast institutions offering undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Last year, Monmouth ranked 74th. MU has had seven consecutive years of continuing improvements in these rankings. The entire campus community is very proud of our ever-increasing reputation!

telecommunications.” Gary traveled all over the country in his new position. “After a few years, I decided it was time to make a quality of life change and the opening at MU was a great fit.” The most satisfying part of Gary’s current job is seeing the improvement in the infrastructure of the telecommunication systems. “When I first started here, many offices had different types of phones and each phone was programmed differently. Now we have a uniform structure.” Gary also really enjoys walking around campus, visiting employees and students and solving telecommunication problems. “It’s a good feeling to know that I am making a difference on campus each day.”

One of Gary’s greatest accomplishments is being a volunteer with a wonderful, non-profit organization for children called Optimist International. He is very proud to be the 2005-2006 Governor for the New Jersey/Lower New York District. The mission of the organization is: “Bring out the best in Kids.” Each Optimist Club chooses their own activities, raises their own funds and bases their service on the needs of the community. “Our marquee project has been childhood cancer,” explains Gary. “Our district has created a Camp Quality NJ which is a week-long sleep-away camp for children who have cancer or who are in remission. The camp is free and consists of volunteer doctors and companions for the children. It really gives them a chance to have fun and be kids. It also gives their parents a break.” Camp Quality NJ hosted 38 children this year during its third event. In addition to Gary’s dedication to being a volunteer, he is also a high school football referee and belongs to the Central Jersey Chapter of the New Jersey Football Officials Association.

Family is also very important to Gary. He and his wife Joanne have been happily married for twenty-three years and have a nineteen-year-old son, Matthew. Matt is a Communication major at Monmouth University, with a concentration in Radio and TV Broadcasting.

Cecilia Henriques is one of two assistants that support the Telecommunications department. Cecilia was hired in April 2000. Her job is focused on the phone system for the student population. Cecilia manages the student directory and issues each student an authorization code to use for long distance calling. She also generates the students’ phone bills, processes payments and assists with any questions or concerns that may arise. “Sometimes a student may have a problem using their authorization code, while other times they may dispute a long distance call they do not recall making,” explains Cecilia. When this occurs, she must run different reports and do investigative work to determine the validity of their dispute. Cecilia also assists the University Police department in their investigations. In addition, she handles collections of overdue phone bills and relieves Fran on the switchboard for breaks. The most enjoyable part of her job is interacting with the public. “I enjoy talking to and assisting the students and their parents.”

In addition, Cecilia attends MU part-time as a Psychology major and received her Associate’s Degree this past May. Her goal is to counsel adolescents and work in human relations. Cecilia

previously worked as a customer service consultant for seven years at MicroWarehouse before joining MU. “I have a passion for helping people.” She has become an avid fundraiser in her community. It all started two years ago when Cecilia’s cousin, Wayne Richardson, was diagnosed with cancer. She and her family planned a bowling fundraiser within two months to raise money to assist the family with their financial needs while Wayne was out of work. “It was very successful. We held a gift auction where the grand prize was a flat screen television and DVD player. Monies were donated by various co-workers here at Monmouth towards this cause. We were all overwhelmed by the kindness shown by so many people.” Cecilia is now involved with her church as a fundraising coordinator for their Straight Street Prison Outreach, which supports those who are incarcerated and their families. “We want to empower inmates to have successful re-entry back into the community, and help reduce the recidivism (relapse) rate by offering educational, social and spiritual support to them and their family. We have taken the children to the circus and to see the Nutcracker.” Cecilia also organizes the ‘Angel Tree’ at Christmas, in which children receive gifts that were donated with a message from their parent who will not be able to be with them for the holiday.

Cecilia has fun spending time with her close family of seven. She likes singing and has a new-found appreciation for writing. She has sung in two plays for the Dunbar Repertory Company which were written by August Wilson. Cecilia wrote her first poem last year and recently had a paper from her class submitted to the Monmouth Review.

Fran Ebert has been a familiar face on campus since 1989. She worked two years as a part-time secretary for the Instructional Media Center prior to accepting a full-time position with ARAMARK, where she spent eight years in the food industry, serving the MU community. Her most gratifying time was when she worked in the Coffee House, which was located in the Student Center. “I loved coming to work each day. The interaction with the students was great. They would confide in me and ask for advice.” According to Fran, when ARAMARK transferred her to The Club, some of the students protested! The Outlook ran a cover story about her transfer, stating Fran was like having a “mom” on campus. “That was the best accolade I could have been given.” Thus, “Friday with Fran” was created and Fran worked in the Coffee House every Friday, where all the students could visit her.

In June of 2000, Fran accepted her current position as telephone operator with the Telecommunications department. Now Fran is known as “the Voice of Monmouth,” responding to an average of four hundred calls per day that come through the University’s main phone number. Fran directs calls to the proper departments and provides general information regarding events and directions to campus. Depending on the time of year, Fran may be inundated with calls from students who require instructions for Commencement, or need to be guided to the Bursar, Registrar or Financial Aid. “I really enjoy the switchboard; it’s a good fit. It’s only when the weather gets bad, that I get buried with hundreds of calls concerning class cancellations and school closings.” Fran also enjoys her co-

workers and speaking to the campus community daily. “Most people know me by name; there are times I speak with the same employee several times during the course of the day.” She has made great friends on campus and they have created long-lasting relationships.

Fran and her husband Dave have been married for thirty-five years and reside in West Long Branch. They have three children, two twin girls, Dena and Lori and their youngest child, David, lives at home. “We are very proud of the adults they have grown into and the accomplishments each has made.” Fran describes them as very respectful and loving with a strong sense of family. Lori graduated from Monmouth University two years ago with a degree in Psychology and is currently taking graduate courses in Psychological Counseling. She currently works with adults that have dual disabilities. She is also the current On-call Operator for Telecommunications. Dena graduated from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Business Administration and received a Master of Business Administration from Monmouth University. She previously worked for MU and is currently the Assistant Director of Annual Giving for Loyola College in Maryland. David is a first year student at MU, majoring in Criminal Justice and working full-time at Staples. Fran’s hobbies include: crafts, cooking, boating with her family and reading. The other joys in her life are her two Italian Greyhounds, Alex and Max.

Robin Fielder joined the group in 2001 as an Assistant and her position has grown over the years. Her duties are centered around the employee population utilizing the phone system. She is responsible for assigning all new employee authorization codes for long-distance calling and answering any questions that may arise involving the system. Robin prints, maintains and tracks the monthly employee phone call reports and if necessary, invoices employees for personal long distance calls. She also assists Cecilia with student inquiries or grievances and covers the switchboard during Fran’s lunch hour. If Fran is absent and the on-call operator cannot fill in, Robin and Cecilia split their day to cover the switchboard. Robin loves interacting with a variety of people. “I feel very comfortable with my co-workers and look forward to coming to work each day.” She describes the campus environment as relaxed and welcoming.

In addition, Robin is currently taking classes at Monmouth University and hopes to obtain an Associate’s degree in May 2007. Robin will be the third sibling to receive a degree from Monmouth University. Her goal is to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. “I have always liked working with numbers and enjoy math.” Her previous positions have always entailed some type of bookkeeping. Before she began working in the Telecommunications department, Robin worked in the accounts payable department at Monmouth Medical Center. In addition, she works a part-time job on Saturdays and runs the day care center at her church on Sundays.

The biggest joy in Robin’s life is her five-year-old daughter, Alexis. She started kindergarten this year and makes Robin proud every day. “Lexi is very smart, makes friends easily and keeps me laughing. She lights up my life everyday, we

have a lot of fun together,” Robin proudly states. They often visit the park and the beach. Their favorite pastime is having dinner at Attilio’s followed by ice cream at Wilson’s, both in Long Branch. Raising Lexi as a single mom has been Robin’s greatest achievement. She has had support from her family, which has been very helpful. According to Robin, Lexi’s Pop-Pop lovingly spoils her! When she is not spending time with Lexi, Robin enjoys interior decorating and design. She has helped family and friends redecorate their homes by matching rugs, countertops, draperies and wall colorings. “I really enjoy it and am pretty good at putting things together.” Robin originally wanted to be an interior designer, but decided it was more fun to do it as a hobby.
