Alpha Industries is founded by Samuel Gelber on October 17 in Knoxville, TN. In December, Alpha is awarded its first contract from the Defense Department to manufacture N-3B parkas for the U.S. Air Force.

Alpha begins production of the first MA-1 flight jackets with an innovative safety feature. Reversible to Indian Orange, the MA-1 allowed air crews of downed planes to be more visible to rescue personnel.

The M-65 Field Coat is developed featuring NYCO, a new nylon/cotton sateen fabric. Built to meet the demands of the battlefield, NYCO is virtually indestructible and extremely wind resistant. Alpha quickly becomes the predominant M-65 manufacturer for the Department of Defense.

The U.S. Navy’s Natick Textile Laboratory selects Alpha Industries to manufacture a prototype cold weather buoyant jacket. This project forges a vital partnership between Alpha and Natick Laboratory to test the suitability of new designs for mass production by the military.

Samuel Gelber’s son-in-law Alan Cirker takes over as CEO and spearheads Alpha’s move into the commercial market. He trademarks the now famous three-bar label that has appeared in Alpha’s civilian jackets since the 1960s.

After nearly 30 years of business and rapid retail sales growth, the first wholesale catalog is published featuring the same iconic styles that Alpha has supplied to the men and women of the U.S. military.

Thirty-three years old and time for a facelift. Alpha’s Flying A logo is introduced symbolizing quality and strength. It incorporates Alpha’s trademark three bars and a stylized letter “A” reminiscent of military designs.

Partnerships are formed with key distributors in Japan and Germany (1999). Valued for its American heritage, iconic designs, and superior product quality, Alpha becomes an internationally recognized brand.

Alpha launches its first website allowing customers to order mil-spec jackets online, find retailers, and learn about the history of U.S. military aircraft.

With a growing global customer base, Alpha expands its men’s outerwear line to include year-round military-inspired sportswear and accessories. Classic military styles also influence new collections for women and kids.

Alpha’s authentic designs are central to collaborations with other market leaders. Co-branded products are completed with Stussy, Hurley and Breitling.

Now a third generation family-owned company under the leadership of Michael Cirker, Alpha Industries celebrates its 55th year with a limited edition anniversary capsule collection of classic and contemporary styles.

Alpha expands its relationship with its German distributor, providing a full license for the western European territory. The new relationship allows for design extensions to better fit the European market.

The N-3B Slim Fit is developed combining the iconic design details of the N-3B parka with Alpha’s modern slim fit silhouette.
