SESSION DATESFall 1 Session Begins Tuesday, September 1(see individual tables for end dates)• Fall hours begin Tuesday, September 1• No classes Labor Day weekend

TABLE OF CONTENTSFrom Our CEOI trust and hope you had a good summer and are looking forward to a pleasant Door County autumn! Fall begins a new program year at your YMCA, and we have an extensive program line-up planned for you. Please review this program guide and join us regularly this fall.

Our youth programming is highlighted by our Doorfi ns swim team and swim lessons, Strivers gymnastics team and progressive gymnastics, and youth sports, along with martial arts, dance and preschool classes. Our two licensed child care centers are now accepting registrations for all age groups beginning with babies 6 weeks and older. Adults have a wide array of program opportunities from structured classes to personal training to individual workout programs, which we are able and willing to help you design.

Our Y membership is at an all-time high with over 8300 members! Thank you for your good work in being our advocates in the community. Please remember we welcome all who wish to participate, and work to make our Y program available to all, without regard to fi nancial ability. Once again, we have raised over $500,000, allowing us to honor our promise to serve the entire community. We always welcome referrals of folks who would enjoy using our YMCA.

I hope you will use and enjoy our Y facilities and programs often this fall.

Thank you for your support of the YMCA in Door County!

Tom Beerntsen, CEODoor County YMCA

YOUTH PROGRAMS

HALLOWEEN COSTUME EXCHANGE

• SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3rd

Every year, kids across Door County trick-or-treat for Halloween, dressed up in their favorite costume. Whether it’s

your favorite Minion or their favorite alien, prince or princess, kids wear their costumes for one day and no matter how much

they love and adore them, most of these costumes are never worn again.

Our annual exchange is a family centered event - everyone is welcome to come and bring your kid's gently-worn costume and exchange it for a different costume that will fi t your child. The exchange enables families to reuse and recycle, as well as save money by not having to purchase new costumes. • The event will take place at the YMCA Sturgeon Bay Program Center and

begins at 1:00 pm when families are invited to arrive with their costumes. • Each family will receive one ticket per costume (up to 4 tickets). • After handing in the costumes, enjoy our giant infl atable Bounce House

while you wait for the exchange to begin. • The exchange will begin at 1:30 pm sharp. • If you do not have a costume to exchange, purchase one for $10.00.• All leftover costumes will be saved for next year. Proceeds are donated to

our Kid Care and Clothe My People. • Additional donations are always welcomed and will be accepted at the

costume exchange. For more information, contact Dori at [email protected]

HALLOWEEN AT THE Y!FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23rd • 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Parents, please do not come early. We need to have time to get everything ready for your family to enjoy!

The Y will deliver the same beloved “spirited” Halloween activities families look forward to every year, one of the most popular events the Y has! And, at the YMCA, parents can count on the fact that their children are celebrating in a safe place where the treats never trick them! Get creative with your family and insist that everyone wears a costume! Your children love to see you get dressed up and enjoy the holiday with them and demonstrate good humor. Come bounce on the infl atables, enjoy carnival games, enjoy the magic of Lou Lepore, and see what other surprises we have for you!!

Register in advance, so you can get in faster, or pay at the door!YMCA Members: $6.00 per family (at the door)General Public: $12.00 per family (at the door)

Loving volunteers needed for this event! If you are interested, please contact Dori Meyer at 743-4949 by October 10th!

TEENLEADERSHIP We provide the opportunity for teens in our Teen Programming to take ownership and leadership in their programs and activities. Over the last four years, or Rotary Interact group has raised over $20,000 toward their annual projects, and has done so by creating and organizing different community events. Our Youth in Government group has consistently been one of the biggest and most prepared groups at our State Model Government event, and is largely due to the ownership our kids take in the program. Please contact the YMCA today for more information regarding how our Door County teens are developing their leadership skills, or to ask how you might be able to provide them support in doing so. ROTARY INTERACT • GRADES 9 THROUGH 12The Door County Rotary Interact Club prides itself on volunteering at various events during the year. The experience gained from this program develops leadership skill and respect for others, and the responsibility of giving, rather than receiving.

ROTARY INFORMATIONAL MEETINGWednesday, September 16th • 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT Grades 7 through 12• YIG meets on Mondays from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pmDo you have an opinion? Let it be heard! Meet and interact with teens from across the state. Study the law-making process. Debate issues and take over the Capitol for an entire weekend! The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state government alive to students. It creates an opportunity for students to discuss current state issues with state administrators, elected offi cials, and students from high schools and YMCA’s throughout the state.

Each conference is led by teens elected to offi ce by their fellow delegates. Each state provides facilities and volunteers from various state departments who act as resources for the students while they debate the issues. The volunteers help guide the students through mock committee meetings. Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the fl oor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote. Y.I.G. INFORMATIONAL MEETINGMonday, September 14th • 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Both meetings will be held in the YMCA Board Room.Contact Eric Natwick at (920) 743-4949

CHAMPIONS ARE MADE IN THE OFF SEASON!COMPETITIVE SWIM AT THE YJoin us for two great programs this Fall for swimmers! Don't miss our very successful Dolphin program, for swimmers interested in joining the swim team or developing exceptional strokes, and Fall Prep for swim team members!

Champions are made in the off season.....we have all heard this statement before. For swimmers, it is especially important to develop an endurance base before the winter season starts! Fall Prep is the answer! With new coaches, new training plans, and technique reviews with new DVD's, you will have a fantastic start to the new season! We have hired a new coach with great experience to develop a consistent program in Northern Door and help coach our Juniors in Sturgeon Bay. With all of the swimmers training this summer and a commitment to Fall Prep, we will once again be prepared to have a spectacular winter season.

Sign up fast!!! Only 50 swimmers allowed in each group!

AQUATICSThe YMCA of Door County is proud to offer a hybrid program of nationally-recognized ARC, YMCA and ALTS swim instruction, which provides a student- centered approach to learning. Small class sizes, high-quality instruction and a progressive approach to skill building help our students fl ourish as they practice their new swim skills.

PARKINSON EXERCISE • Exercising with Parkinson Disease & Parkinson Related SyndromesAn exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and related syndromes may be just what you’re looking for; it is designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals with the syndrome. The fi rst 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on trunk mobility. During the remaining 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle to class. Please call Carl (PT) or Shawn (PTA) with questions at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab 746-0410. Group exercise provides an opportunity to work out with others in a welcome, motivating environment that produces results. No matter what age or fi tness level you are at, we have the classes that are just right for you.

GROUP EXERCISE

AIM FOR "150 & 2"LET GROUP EXERCISE GUIDE YOU IN MEETING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY RECOMMENDATIONS

The World Health Organization cites insuffi cient physical activity is 1 of the 10 leading risk factors for death worldwide. In fact, researchers at Harvard Medical School estimated that 5.3 million deaths could have been prevented in 2012 by people meeting exercise recommendations.

So, what exactly are those recommendations?

For overall cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days a week (total 150 minutes) OR at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity at least three days a week (total 75 minutes).

In addition to aerobic activity, moderate-to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity is recommended at least 2 days a week for additional health benefi ts.

The CDC reported that 80% of Americans don’t meet these standards. If you’re among the 80% and need some help hitting those cardio minutes or the strength training sessions, group exercise can guide you in becoming more active and hitting that “150 & 2” target.

This session, the Northern Door Program Center offers over 45 group exercise classes and a handful of drop in sports to help you knock off minutes in that cardiovascular category and hit those sessions of strength training.

For specifi c recommendations on which group exercise classes would be a great fi t for you, reach out to Allison Vroman at [email protected] or 920.868.3660.

PARKINSON EXERCISEExercising with Parkinson Disease & Parkinson Related SyndromesAn exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you’re looking for. These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals that have PD or PRS. Financial assistance is available at the Y. The fi rst 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on trunk mobility. During the other 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or maintenance of functional activities used in every day life. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle to class. If you have questions please call Carl (PT) or Shawn (PTA) at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services at 920-746-0410. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance.) Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information.
