You find a great website called The Modern Apprentice which has all kind of facts about the sport, and is a great resource to

look at and learn from.

You also stumble across a Facebook group for new and aspiring falconers online, and you request to become a member. Shortly,

you are added to the apprentices group.

In order to pursue the sport, the very first thing you are going to have to do is find someone who will sponsor you for your

2 year apprenticeship. And the best way to get a sponsor, is to go out with experience falconers and help them flush game for

their birds, and attend as many meets and events as you can.

You should go ahead and [[introduce yourself->Introduce Yourself]] to see if anyone is willing to let you accompany them on a

hunt.

<img src="https://www.eastsussexfalconry.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/hawk-walk-main.jpg" alt="Harris's Hawk Flying" />

You show up on time, introduce yourself to the falconer in person, and from there the two of you climb into his old hunting

truck to drive out to the field. He explains to you how you need to walk along side him, beating and kicking at vegetation to

try and scare up a rabbit for his beautiful Harris' Hawk to chase. You do as he says, and before long, out pops a bunny.

The Harris' locks in on on its target, and takes of after the rabbit. After what seems like ages, he makes a grab for the

cottontail, and in that split second, the rabbit hooks a sharp left, leaving the hawk in the dust. The rabbit wins this time.

As you watch the chase diffuse, you are consumed by one single thought;

[[I absolutely have to do this->Pursuit of Apprenticeship]].

[[Yeah, this isn't really for me->Death of Interest]]...

From that point on, you go out as often as you can with a couple of different falconers located within about an hour and a

Free Flight 1

As the trainng session the following day commences, you are nervous as all get out. Up to this point, he has performed

flawlessly and seems super reliable, but what if he picks flying free over coming back? It is, after all, all up to him

(after you let go) whether or not he returns. Shakily, and with your heart in your chest you reach out to the leash attached

to her jesses. You detached it, raise your arm, and he flys off to land in a nearby tree, like you've done on the creance

line time and time again.

But something's different this time, and he knows it. He flys into a different tree, realizing his freedom, while you raise

your glove and begin trying to call him back down. It seems to last an eternity. But finally, after only a few short seconds,

he takes off, swoops in, and lands solidly on your glove for the tidbit of food he hopes you're holding for him.

Out of his own free will, he has chosen to come back. And it's one of the most incredible feelings in the world.

Out of his own free will, he has chosen to come back. And it's one of the most incredible feelings in the world.

After many repetitions over the next few days in addition to teaching him to follow you around from tree to tree, he is

Free Flight 3

You wait, and wait, and wait, becoming more

desperate with each few seconds that tick by. Minutes eventually go by, and before you know it, you've been outside for

several hours trying desperately to coax him out of the tree. But he's not moving, and the sun is almost gone. You're going

to have to wait until morning when you can try again; maybe he'll be hungry enough by then.

The next morning comes, as as you walk out before the sun has even peeked over the horizon, you see that he's gone. You've

officially [[lost your bird->Lose Bird 3]].

towards you; no, he's flying directly away from you, and he's gaining both speed and altitude fast!

Hurridly you run to your car, yank open the door handle, and clamber into the seat, all the while trying to keep a visual on

him in the sky. But by the time your pull out onto the main road, he's no where to be seen... You've officially [[lost your

Lose Bird 5

You call your sponsor and the few falconers that are within about an hour and a half's drive from you, and as you wait for

help to arrive, you continue driving around looking for her, just hoping for a miracle. Eventually, everyone is searching

high and low for $birdname, while the sun continues to drop lower and lower in the sky.

Your phone rings, and you answer. They found your bird, but you are going to have to [[retrap her->Retrap Bird 5]].

Lose Bird 3

You search and search the area, hoping to high heavens that you'll spot $birdname in a neighborhood tree or flying above you,

but to no avail. He doesn't show... These things happen in falconry; it's just part of it. With that, you file your paperwork

with the state and attempt to trap a new bird, but it looks like it's just too late in the season, and you can't seem to find

one that's young enough. Time passes, and before you know it, the season is [[coming to a close->End of Season 3]]

Bird Killed 1

Just another day out in the field, chasing rabbits and chasing the daylight. You're kicking at the brush trying to scare out

rabbits for your hawl, when something leaps from the underbrush and makes a run for it! You begin yelling out to your bird,

trying to signal that its meal is on the run, and in no time, $birdname is in hot pursuit. Suddenly, the rabbit makes a sharp

turn, heading now for the underbrush of another neighboring treeline instead of the open field. Both hawk and rabbit crash

into the foliage, and you rush over to russling bushes to try and help $birdname by dispatching the prey as quickly and as

humanely as possible. But as you get there, you realize that the russling is not from a predator-prey struggle; the rabbit it

long gone, and instead, $birdname is struggling, desperately trying to hang onto life after crashing headlong into an

overgrown barbed-wire fence. His movements get weaker and weaker, and within a matter of seconds, he's dead. The world is a

dangerous place to live as a hawk. And it's even more dangerous with the cars, telephone wires, poisons, traps, guns, and

even barbed-wire fences instroduced by humankind.

As a falconer, you can only try to reduce the possibility of your hawk meeting its end out in the field, but there's only so

much control you have over an animal that flys free in a landscape riddled with so many dangers.

You file your paperwork with the state and attempt to trap a new bird, but it looks like it's just too late in the season,
