Falcon Focus Newsletter Chair: Brian Troscinski • [email protected]

While this entire school year, like all others, has seemed so incredibly busy, the next five weeks are definitely not anexception. Please check our website and calendar for upcoming activities and events, and feel welcome to call or email if youhave any questions We are looking forward to welcoming the parents of our incoming 6th grade students, upcoming band, chorus, & orchestra concerts, the annual District 204 Fine Arts Festival, track meets, soccer games, 8th grade promotionceremonies, and many end of the year celebrations.

In late April, we held our 3rd Annual Volunteer Luncheon. It was a small gesture to show our appreciation for all that ourvolunteers do for our school on a daily basis. This year's theme was "You Put the Extra in Extraordinary". We felt this was soappropriate because we recognize that our school would not be what it is without the generous support we receive from ourmany volunteers.

In mid-May, we will recognize National Teacher Appreciation Week and National School Nurse Week. I feel so fortunate tohave the staff we have at Fischer. They are truly making a positive difference in the lives of their students.

Thank you for a great year everyone!

A tremendous Thank You goes out to the Fischer staff and administration for the very delicious and enjoyable volunteerluncheon that was recently held. It was so "Extra" thoughtful of you to provide us with such a nice event.

The end of the year is fast approaching and we are very busy planning for many year-end events and at the same time makingpreparations for next year. Each year we recognize Fischer's hard working staff with a week long Staff Appreciation Event. Many volunteers are needed to make this a successful event. Please see the information page in this newsletter on how youcan help.

We will be helping with each grade level's year-end events. Volunteers are always needed and are very much appreciated atthese events. Please watch the daily email announcements for more information.

One of our first steps in planning for next year is to include our blue packet of information in the registration packets. Pleaselook in these packets for the School Supply order forms, membership forms and volunteer information. All forms can bereturned to the office with your registration materials. These forms are also included in this newsletter. Many volunteers areneeded to fill Standing Committee Chairs, Committee Chairs and individual volunteer positions. Technology Pilot ProgramReported by [email protected] on 4/9/12A goal in District 204 is to ensure that students are proficient in 21st century skills. In an effort to increase the opportunities to usethese skills while enhancing the learning environment, the district is piloting a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program in 30classrooms throughout April and May. Select classrooms in Graham Elementary School, Longwood Elementary School, Crone MiddleSchool, Neuqua Valley High School, Metea Valley High School and Waubonsie Valley High School will participate in the pilot program.

The goal of the pilot program is to determine how students benefit educationally by using technology they already own within theschool's instructional setting. This includes laptops, cell phones, and tablets. District staff members have researched this topic forover a year with input from students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Other districts that have implemented BYOT have alsobeen studied.

Parents who have students in participating classrooms will receive notification in early April. Parents are not encouraged to purchasedevices for this pilot. The district recognizes that not all students have their own devices, or in some cases, parents might not becomfortable allowing their children to bring their devices to school. Careful attention will be given to ensure that no students are leftout. In some cases, this will happen through small group activities or supplementing student-owned devices with those available atschool.

Staff and students participating in the pilot will be surveyed upon completion to determine the success of the pilot program. Theinformation collected will assist the district in determining possible next steps regarding BYOT.

Fischer and Granger reach a “Peak”

From Around The District: March

Reported by [email protected] on 3/21/12Author Roland Smith always knew he wanted to be a writer, but a 20-year career working as a zookeeper ultimately provided richmaterial for many of the more than 30 books he has written. Smith visited Fischer and Granger Middle Schools as the culminatingactivity for the “One Book, One School” program, which featured his young adult fiction book, “Peak,” about a teen who climbs Mt.Everest. Granger LMC Director Lynne White said the schools launched the program in January as a way to unite the buildings as acommunity of readers. “We selected ‘Peak’ because of its adventure storyline, its memorable characters, and its strong personalmessages regarding facing challenges, pushing through adversity and understanding family,” she said. Fischer sixth-grader Jacksaid, “He (Smith) takes things that are interesting to kids and he puts you in the place of his characters. His books inspire me.” Theauthor’s visit was sponsored by the Granger and Fischer Middle School PTSAs.

Since the original Earth Day in 1970, more than 1 billion people around the world participate in Earth Day events on April 22ⁿ.Across the US and Illinois, there are hundreds of events to commemorate the holiday, but after Earth Day is done, whathappens to the momentum? Is it just one day to mobilize and then back to business as usual?

We resolve to make “Every Day an Earth Day.”

The Fischer Middle School community has created an event to keep the momentum going… Our goal is to create awarenessand knowledge and to promote stewardship and activism concerning environmental issues.

DATE: May 9, 2012TIME: 5 – 7:00 pmWHERE: Forum Room Fischer Middle SchoolCOST: FREE

This family event will feature both exhibits and guest presentations. Come out and learn about products, programs andrelated CAREERS within our local community. Come out and meet local heroes and heroines that serve our community incareers connected to environmental protection. These individuals will answer questions from our students about the workthey do and how these careers protect our planet. Other exhibits will include conservation, birds and butterflies, sustainablegardening, growing herbs and buying local and organic products. There will be an area reserved for a plant swap so that localgardeners can share their overflow cuttings within our community. We look forward to a fun and educational evening whereFischer families will be inspired to do more to establish and maintain a sustainable future our community.

Ideas for additional exhibits are also welcome. For more information about how you can present an exhibit on May 9th,please contact the PTSA Service Committee Chairperson, Crystal Blount at [email protected]. Farewell Falcons By Alyssa Sibley

In my three years at Fischer, I never really thought about the fact that I would actually be promoting to Waubonsie

Valley. how close I had become with students I never wou

friends with.

the same group of friends and students who I came to know and love so well! the course list came out;

until the bands and orchestras were auditioned; until encore classes were picked, and the talk about high school became so

real. (not to mention so close).

But in my three years as being at Fischer, I did learn one thing. I learne alcon. I sat there

every year, and watched the falcon class of 2012 grow and grow.

I saw our class go from having little cliques of sixth graders, and staying close- knit to our elementary school

friends, to hanging out with other kids w . I saw Falcons accepting newcomers, and as the

years went by, respecting our elders, and the younger group of Falcons. I watched as the drama level went down every

year, and everyone had a mutual respect for kids who might not have the same mindset as others.

I saw the little things that make up a Falcon. The mutual respect of athletes toward others, helping a struggling

friend with a homework assignment, or just sharing something you have with a friend who needs it.

We are the FIRST class of Falcons to go all the way through sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. We are the only

class to experience being the new kid in school with EVERYBODY in the school (sixth, seventh and eighth). We are the first

Falcons that the sixth grade teachers here experienced. We are the only falcons to graduate with the same sixth grade

class we started with; we were never broken up into a different school. Not the mention the class that has experienced the

most Fischer falcon AFOOFA assemblies.

So, this is our final Falcon goodbye. The eighth graders here touched every single person involved in this school,

and that includes faculty & staff, parents, students, and anyone else who has had the joy of being in the line of contact with

a falcon. The Fischer falcon class of 2012 has left a significant positive mark on Falcon teachers, younger falcons, and

Set Out For State By: Vivian Tran

Recently on March 10th

these students will continue onto the Illinois State Science Fair on May 4th and May 5

th of 2012. All of these students have

worked very hard over the last few months.

These students started out working on their science project right here at school, where they had many wonderful

teachers to help them out. They needed to include a review of literature, a display board and a presentation. The review of

literature is a paper in which contained a 4 to 5 pages of the research the student did, and where they got their information.

Their display board was a visual aid that they used to explain their experiment.

strict Science Fair. Students arrived at 8:00 AM on

Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at Metea Valley High School, where they had a chance to check in and set up their projects.

After setting up and checking in, they were to relax in the commons until it was their turn to be judged. When it was their

turn to be judged, the students would read and explain their experiment and results to a group of judges. Judges then

continued to read their paper and score them.

After a while of waiting, students soon found that only 25 of them would continue on to regionals. This was a

moment of joy for some while it was also a moment of disappointment for others. Then the students who continued on to

regionals were given about a month and 6 days to prepare themselves for regionals. When that day finally came, they

were all anxious as they entered the building at 7:30 AM.

Here they were to set up and check in. After that they waited until it was time to be judged. 8 of these students

who had very great project will continue on to state this month.

Congratulations and good luck to the State Science Fair competitors!!

The Nintedo 3DS! Is it worth the price?

BY: Ibrahim Saifullah & Matthew Nemechek

The Nintendo 3DS is a very unique handheld gaming system. Not only are the new games

played in amazing 3D, but users can browse the internet and view items in 3D! You can take

pictures and videos in 3D! You can also access and view Netflix in 3D and other apps! Unlike the

Original Nintendo DS or the DSlite, it does not support flip note or chat rooms.

Now, discuss AR codes. AR codes are special cards that are scanned, and you are awarded mini games or

new character access.

Another special feature is street pass. Street pass is where you put your 3ds into sleep mode and if another 3ds

passes by and it is in sleep mode it will give 1 new item and characters for the same games or apps you have!

Another cool thing is that you can add friends local or over the internet. You can play games with each other.

Overall, we recommend upgrading to the 3DS because of all of the new and advanced features!

Roland Smith at Fischer By: Jackelyn Solis

When Roland Smith came to our school on March

13th, it was one of the biggest events of the school year!

We all gathered in the gym to see and hear him speak. He

talked all about all of his books he has written and all the

een on.

Altogether, Mr. Smith has written about 35 books

such as Elephant Run, and no one can forget the

One Book One S

Peak. Roland Smith has travelled to many places and has

done many things. He has saved sea otters and red wolfs

from extinction. He started off as a zoo employee and

went on to become a great author know in America.

Although he said he would never ever climb

Everest, he did have fun writing it and has even Skyped

with the boy who claimed it for real.

Mr. Smith also told us how to write a book from

his own experience. First, research the topic you have

chosen. Then, write down all your ideas. Next, plot out the

story and put all the events in order. You may have to

switch it around a bit! Fourth, write out your rough draft

(you might have to keep on redoing it in until you get the

one you want.)

Our experience with Mr. Smith was a great

opportunity for us all and his book Peek was a sensation!

Thank you Mr. Roland Smith!

revolutionary as the iPad

many new things are just upgrades to things already there, like the iPhone 4S.

The next big change is the screen. The screen has 3.1 million pixels, more than a standard

HDTV. The said processor helps support these pixels.

Now the camera. The camera

shoots clearer and more stable video.

And what better way to view it than

the amazing screen?

4G is probably the most

fought-over feature in the new iPad. 4G is a faster version of 3G,

the wireless that a majority of cell phones use. Many think that

3G.

And lots of smaller updates, such as the ability to

verbally compose an email, 1080p (Movie quality) video

recording, and, for the extremely weak, being 0.11 pounds (51

grams) lighter than the iPad 2. I honestly think that the amount

of new features is borderline for being worth it, if you have at

least $500 on you.

My favorite part about this new release? iPad 2 dropped 100$.

Civilization V By: Jacob Tomsa

Thi

Steam. This game takes place on Earth at any time (past or future); you are an actual historic civilization leader

with some background history. You take control of your people with the help of your advisors and special

abilities. If you want to grow your civilization in the game, you will have to research, battle other civilizations,

and fight your way to over 5 different victories! You can be many civilization

leaders with different abilities. You can also play story mode which lets you

play a civilization leader with a goal. Also, you can play online! This game

won the game of the year: strategy from Gamespy and also many other

awards!

I love the combat animation, how you can make your own choices to

win, face situations that you must handle, and the leaders are actually real

and the game tells this game a 9/10! The

reason it does not earn a 10/10, is because it can sometimes slow down a

bit because there is a lot happening in the game.

Pet of the Month: Zebra Finch

By: Tyler Thornton

Do you know what the most popular finch is in America? I know some finches will say

.. ebra Finch. Now, all Zebra Finches in

in America).

Sadly, Zebra Finches only have a life span of 5 to 15 years, but pet owners like the

fact that Zebra Finches are active and very fun to watch (though the birds do not like

people gawking at them all the time; they would like to sleep). Finches are very

social, they like to be kept in pairs, so they will play together fine! Also, they may be

small, but they need room to fly (more width needed than height). Zebra Finches

may be very nice to other birds but they do not like to be handled. They are the easiest to keep as pets.

Finches are good birds for beginners in keeping birds as pets. Finally, they cheep a lot, so they are easily

tolerated by adults. Overall, they are very good pets; they are small, active and cute!

In my opinion, this was the best game of the entire

franchise up to right now (Pokémon Black/White), and let me tell

you why; creativity. This game has the most unique Pokémon, the

best legendries, the greatest story, the most amazing side-quests, a

fair chunk of awesome music, the best starters, and the only

Pokémon in the entire series that could PERMANENTLY LEARN

reason is because it was originally released in Japan, and

that was as an indie game (indie game, noun: a game that is

However, this game is absolutely fantastic. It has

well-made bosses, creative dialogue, interesting characters,

and a masterful soundtrack. Seriously, I could play this game

twenty times over and still not get tired of it, though maybe

through the multiple endings (each with its own steps and

outcome) or the unbelievable amount of hidden items, this

game can take up weeks of your life (if you want the perfect

ending and all the best gear) in a single play through.

Again, I have to bring to light the music, as it is

some of the best music I have ever heard composed for a

story of a girl forced into a game, where the objective is to kill as many people as possible. This

main character felt.

All in all, the movie is almost exactly like watching the book. I highly recommend reading all 3 books (The Hunger

Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay)
