Greetings,
We are well into the year and I would like to send a few reminders about what it means to have chosen Aurora Academy
Charter School for your child’s education. For our students to be successful and for our teachers to be the most effective,
we absolutely need the following from our families.
Attendance
• Drop your child off for school by 7:45.
• Keep early dismissals to a minimum.
Students should be here every day except when they are running a fever of 101 or higher.
Meeting with Administration
• When a meeting is requested and arranged, please attend.
• Be polite when interacting with adults no matter how upset you may be in the moment.
It is polite to let administration and/or teachers know what you would like to speak to them about prior to showing up
unannounced or when you request a meeting. We will gladly meet with you as it fits into our schedule and so
long as we know what it is you would like to discuss. Please use emails - a preemptive email, letting us know what
you would like to discuss or what you would like us to look into is most helpful.
Academics
• Check that your child’s homework is done each night. Ask your child to show it to you.
• Read with your child each night.
Limit tv and technology – especially social media platforms. Tweens, pre-teens, and teens do not have the emotional
maturity for these sites (e.g. Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, etc.).
Behavior/Dress Code
• When your child hasn’t met our expectations please support us when we contact you.
Make sure your child’s uniform fits appropriately and meets the school’s requirements.
Whom should I contact?
• Discipline or lunchroom concerns: Mr. Peterson
• Athletic concerns: Ms. Starkey
• Something a teacher is or isn’t doing: That Teacher
• I’ve reached out to the appropriate person but he/she hasn’t followed up with me. Mrs. Hoen
I’ve reached out to the appropriate person but I don’t really feel heard and I feel that maybe Mrs. Hoen needs to
know. Mrs. Hoen

Meet Aurora Academy’s Newest Board Member: Luke Baker Hello Aurora Academy Faculty, Parents, and Students, I’m Luke Baker and I’m excited to be join-ing the AACS Board of Directors! My wife, Mary, and I have 2 boys currently at AACS. Joshua is in the 5th grade and Jo-nas is in the 3rd grade. In the fall of 2020, my youngest, Jude, will be starting Kin-dergarten as well. We’ve been at AACS for 6 years. We have served in various volunteer capacities, like so many of you who volunteer your time, and we have a deep appreciation for the staff, faculty, and fellow parents at our school. I have 18 years of ministry experience serving in churches and I currently work as a Sales and Marketing director for Gar-den Plaza of Aurora, a retirement community. I have experience serving on various denominational boards/executive groups at both the state and national level. As a pastor, we partnered with a local elementary school, providing mentors for the students, a backpack food program, and we partnered to build a community garden. We also offered free weekly ESL classes for the neighborhood. I’m still learning my new role, if I can help serve you in anyway please reach out. Looking forward to meeting you and helping however I can.

Meet the 3rd Grade Team
Mr. Keller—3r Grade Teacher
My name is Steven Keller, and I am very excit-ed to be starting my third year here at Aurora Academy! I am looking forward to working with the amazing students, as well as the par-ents, staff, and community to help our stu-dents grow in any way possible. I graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver with a Bachelor of the Arts in human develop-ment in 2015. I have worked for many differ-ent schools, and have done many different jobs for about 16 years now, in-cluding tutoring, and directing before and after school care programs.
I was born in Maryland, and being part of a military family, moved around a few times before finally settling in Colorado. I have lived in Aurora all my life, and have known this area since Havana Gardens was Buckingham Mall. I love anything to do with Colorado- the sports teams (the Broncos especial-ly), the people, and the places. I take advantage of the beautiful scenery we have here- whether it’s in the summer time and hiking, or in the winter and snowboarding down the mountains.
I look forward to helping students grow not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. I realize that this is a goal that is not attainable by myself alone, and I gladly accept anything parents, staff, and the community will offer to help students reach their goals. The lines of communication are open, and I work to try to keep them open. Please do not hesitate to contact me, I welcome it!

Ms. Zimmerman—3rd Grade
My name is Elaine Zimmerman and I am exhila-rated to be teaching 3rd grade again this year at Aurora Academy Charter School. This will be my third year at Aurora Academy, but will be my 7th year teaching.
I earned my Bachelors of Science in Marketing from Metro State in 2003, although I soon realized that Sales was not a good fit for me. I went back to school to earn my teaching license from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2010 in EC-4th grade. I moved back to Denver in 2013 and am licensed in both ECE and K-6th in the State of Colorado. I am currently working on my Masters at the Uni-versity of Colorado at Denver with an endorsement to my license for special education. My goal is to graduate with honors in May 2020 with a Masters of Special Education.
I grew up in Gunnison, a small mountain town, but my mom ended up moving us to Dallas when I was around the age of 12. I have spent about half my life in Texas and the other half in Colorado. All my fam-ily lives down south in Texas and Florida, but Colorado will always be my home. I originally moved to Denver January 1, 2000. I live with my boyfriend and have two fur babies, but do not have any children of my own. In my free time, I love to spend time up in the mountains year-round. I enjoy hiking and have a goal to hike every National Park in the United States. After I graduate next May, I plan on spending my summers traveling. Lastly, I am a HUGE BRONCO fan and am always
