FAITH & WORK 3
He was my grandfather. A wonderful man whom I
still love dearly. One of those rare individuals I
was fortunate to have in my life. Not long
enough. But his impact on me continues today.
I was thinking of him recently. And of the last game of
checkers I ever played with him. He would always win
when we played. Always. But I recall my pestering him to
play a game. He was mostly bedfast in his home in
Beaver, PA where he and Grandmother Emma had lived
for many years.
I knew that Grandpa was ill but I wanted to defeat him at
checkers. He consented to play but I could tell his heart
was not in the game. I have no doubt that he let me win.
And it was our last game together. I treasure that moment.
Raymond Arwood Vance was, as my father would say,
“very hard headed.” Yes, Grandpa was set in his ways.
But that is not always a bad thing.
Grandpa was born on a farm in Beaver County. He became
a foreman in the shipping area of a plant which made
bathtubs and fixtures in Monaca, PA.
But more importantly he was a Christian. He was an elder in
the United Presbyterian Church of Rochester, PA. He had a
booming voice which he really exercised as the congregation
sang hymns. Initially, I was kind of embarrassed when I went
A Mess age f rom W i l l i a m V . D a y

to worship services with my grandparents. Then I became
so proud of him and them. Even though he sang off key!
My grandmother began to slowly lose her eyesight. This is
when I saw the true hand of God via my grandfather. He was
so kind and gentle with her. Eventually he prepared all of
the meals for them. Apricots were almost always for dessert.
I fondly recall a time when I spent an overnight at the
Vances. My grandparents were so wonderfully kind to me.
Well, they had purchased some cider in a large glass
vessel. How long they had the cider they did not know.
They offered me several glasses of cider after dinner. I
really enjoyed it! So, around 6 p.m. I decided to lie down
on the living room couch. The next thing I remembered was
awaking Saturday morning about 9 a.m. My grandparents
did not know and neither did I that it was HARD CIDER!
Very hard! And I enjoyed it!
Please keep in mind that my grandparents were teetotalers.
They did not drink alcohol. Most Presbyterians did not
drink alcohol in those days. Or at least they did not admit
it! But I liked the hard cider!
I read that most grandchildren do not know where their
grandparents are buried. Well, I do. They are in Heaven!
I treasure my memories of them. God’s chosen people!
And my last game of checkers with Grandpa!
Have a blessed Christmas!
God bless,
WVD

Here we grow again!
Landscapers will be putting the finishing touches on the newly completed four-plex — the Willow design —
at The Woodlands at St. Barnabas, bringing the total number of carriage homes to 172. Behind each of
these new buildings on Curran Court will be planted three willow trees, drawing their water source from a
small stream. Already, three of the new homes are occupied. According to Senior Vice President Douglas W. Day,
there are 16 home designs to choose from including the newest, “The Willow.” Besides The Woodlands, the
St. Barnabas Communities includes The Village at St. Barnabas and Whitetail Ridge, each offering independent
living “apart from the ordinary.”
For more information about independent living at St. Barnabas, contact Cynthia Boyd, Director of Admissions,
St. Barnabas Communities, at 724-444-5573 or [email protected]. Check out the website at

FAITH & WORK 9
St. Barnabas’ Memory Care Program
can help. It doesn’t have all the
answers, but the program, instituted
in 2012, is continually growing, asking:
What is the best kind of care? What is the
best approach? What have we learned?
What should we do differently?
Overseeing the person-centered program
is Marjorie “Midge” Hobaugh, Specialty
Care Coordinator, assisted by Anna Foust,
Memory Care Specialist. According to Midge,
St. Barnabas’ ultimate goal is to make
patients happier. “We combine one-on-one
sessions and therapeutic groups, tailoring
the program to the individual, concentrating
on that person’s strengths and abilities.”
St. Barnabas’ Memory Care Program can
best be understood from the viewpoints of
three very special residents.
Joan — This former May Queen was
married for 63 years. It was after her
husband Donald’s death in 2014 and a
brief hospitalization that Joan’s memory
loss became more noticeable. The
family was advised that Joan could no
longer live alone and they chose The
Arbors at St. Barnabas for their
mother. Joan has adjusted well, made
friends and daily interacts with people.
Though sad, the family is comforted,
knowing she is safe and happy.
Pat — After raising four children, Pat
went back to school for a second
degree in art, and pursued a successful
career in interior design. Pat was always
redecorating her home, making doll
clothes and original Halloween costumes
for her grandchildren. Her passion for
art, design, and sewing continued until
three years ago when her memory loss
intervened. Despite that loss, Pat still
has a keen artistic eye.
Esther — This retired English teacher
is articulate and imaginative. When
diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, she
was concerned but eager to live as fully
as possible. “I decided,” Esther says,
“to keep exercising, saying my prayers,
enjoying every moment with my
children, grandchildren and friends.
Am I missing out on anything in my
life? Ok, yes …driving a car, taking
walks by myself. You see, Lewy Body
Dementia affects my voice, my motion,
my balance, my memories.”
During the first few weeks of residency,
Midge, with the
help of family,
identifies strengths
and abilities. Then,
with the help of all
the therapies:
occupational,
speech, physical
therapy, these are
developed and
enhanced.
In group sessions,
pictures, as well as
music and food, are used to stimulate
memories and cognition as multi-sensory
stimulation is one of the hallmarks of the
program. Midge holds up a picture of a
happy baby and asks the trio to title the
photo. Esther names it “Chubby Cheeks.”
Joan titles it “Best Friend Two.” Midge
asks who is “Best Friend One.” “A dog,”
Joan quickly replies. Pat smiles. And
Midge moves onto another photo. In these
exercises Midge has learned that all three
retain the ability to read, with Esther
having the ability to discern, Joan, the
ability to use humor and Pat, to deduct
with support.

L It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
FAITH & WORK 11
It’s a time to laugh and sing and enjoy the
spirit of Christmas with tree trimming and
ugly sweater parties that bring residents,
patients, families, friends and staff closer
together. Community groups like the Pine
Richand High School Orchestra, the
Greater Croation Men’s Chorus, the Jingle
Elves of Bakerstown Presbyterian Church
and whole families stroll through the
halls, singing Christmas carols.
The Peace of our Lord The Chapels in all the facilities are decorated
with poinsettias, evergreen and candles,
inviting all to pray together at this blessed
time of year. All faiths, denominations are
welcome. Father Mike of St. Richard’s
parish extends “the peace of our Lord” to
all for his Friday service at 9:30 a.m. in
Hilltop Hall at The Village at St. Barnabas.
And on Dec. 21 a candlelight service will
be held at Valencia Woods Chapel at
2 p.m. by the Bakerstown Presbyterian
Church. For a complete schedule of all
services, go to the St. Barnabas website at
StBarnabasHealthSystem.com.
Families Remember Loved OnesThe family of two patients who will not be
with us this year – the Markin family –
will continue their parents legacy of love
and caring: “Our parents taught us
comfort and joy were the most precious
gifts to give at Christmas and throughout
the year. They always used their many
talents to bring joy and comfort to others
and encouraged us to do the same. Mom
and Dad’s final years were spent at The
Arbors, Valencia Woods, surrounded by
the wonderful staff and other residents
who became their friends. This year our
family has decided to make and deliver
lap quilts to these friends, in loving
memory of our parents.”
Memory care patients at all The Arbors
and at St. Barnabas and Valencia Woods
skilled care have written letters about
what Christmas means to them and their
favorite Christmas memories. These will
be shared with family, friends, staff and
throughout the campuses.
The True Meaning of ChristmasA simple meal of soup and bread is
shared by The Woodlands residents on
Christmas Eve as they gather in fellowship
to observe the true meaning of Christmas.
On Christmas day, St. Barnabas invites
anyone and everyone who is in need or
alone to break bread with us. The
century-old tradition of free Christmas
dinners celebrates the good will and
promise of Jesus’ birth. Join us at
St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Gibsonia,
at Valencia Woods in Valencia and Beaver
Meadows in Beaver, PA. from 11 a.m. to
1 p.m. Dec. 25. For information call
724-443-0700.
To all our friends across the nation and
beyond, we wish you all a blessed
Christmas. “God bless us everyone.”

FAITH & WORK 12
I f you’re like me, you are annoyed by the younger
generation’s improper use of words and grammar.
Senior citizens are often described as being grumpy, not
accepting new ideas and intolerant of younger people.
Although I am in my mid-80s, I try very hard to avoid all of
those characterizations. Rather than being grumpy, I am
positive and optimistic about my life. I readily accept new
ideas and new technology even if my computer skills lag far
behind those of my grandchildren. I also try to be open-
minded toward the younger generations and, in fact, believe
they may be better at solving some of today’s challenges
than my generation. Nevertheless, I do take issue with some
of their use of words and grammar. Perhaps we should
send a message.
EXAMPLES:• The constant interjection of “you know” into almost
every sentence.
• Beginning every sentence with “so” as if they are stalling until they can think of something to say.
• The use of “like” to emphasize an adjective; it was “like” awesome.
• Referring to everyone, regardless of gender, with their new unisex word, “guys.” Lots of older women insist they are not “guys.”
• “My bad.” This pathetic phrase is used to admit an error – instead of “sorry” or “I made a mistake.” It sounds like a 1920s Tarzan movie – “Me Tarzan – You Jane.”
• And the worst “no problem” is used as a substitute for “you’re welcome” or “my pleasure” in response to “thank you.”
Please, young people, proper English will help make us old
geezers less grumpy and more likely to increase your gratuity
or return to your place of business. So…you know guys we
will actually be like grateful for you to hear our plea and say
“no problem.” If not, it’s “your bad,” not mine.
And here at St. Barnabas it’s Merry Christmas, not Merry
Xmas or Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas Everyone!
You Know This is Why I’m Like Irritated. You Know.

FAITH & WORK 13
Since 1900 St. Barnabas has been providing care for chronically
and terminally ill patients regardless of their ability to pay for
that care. This does not only include skilled medical care, but
all of the services so necessary for a meaningful life – restorative,
social, spiritual. And all of this is made possible by the support of
donors – friends who live nearby or in states across our nation and
even a few across the sea. Please join them.
You can choose to support the cost of caring for a patient for a day —
$350, for a week — $2,450, for a 30-day month — $10,500, for a
year — $127,750, or even one hour — $14.58…whatever your heart
and your budget tells you.
For 117 years St. Barnabas has been inviting anyone who
is in need or alone to share Christmas dinner with us. We
ask that you donate $10, 20, 50 to help pay for these
dinners. And that we add these men, women and children
to our blessing as we join hands with our loved ones to
break bread and give thanks for Christ’s birth.
You can help keep our patients warm and cozy throughout
the winter, and cool during the hot, summer months. Our
heating and air conditioning costs for the year for all of
our facilities totals $493,646. A contribution in any
amount would be greatly appreciated.
Patients with wheels enjoy a priceless measure of freedom.
The chairs are customized to fit specialized needs and
range in price from $500 to more than $5,000. Your gift
in any amount to this fund will help provide mobility to a
well-deserving patient.
To contribute to any of these funds, please send your
check to St. Barnabas Charities in the enclosed yellow
envelope or you may give online at StBarnabas

MEMORY
In the 1980s William Lowry,
President of Blue Cross of Western
Pennsylvania (now Highmark)
became a friend to St. Barnabas and in
2017, the organization was honored to
return his generosity and stewardship
with the TLC he so rightfully deserved
when — 30 years after his illustrious
career as entrepreneur-turned-corporate
chief, and after headlining the St.
Barnabas CEO Leadership Conference,
he became a patient of Valencia Woods
at St. Barnabas.
Complications from Parkinson’s
Disease required 24-hour medical
supervision and physical therapy. His
wife Marie turned to St. Barnabas and
its 117 year history of providing
sophisticated and compassionate care.
Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas was her
husband’s home away from home until
his passing this past August.
Mr. Lowry left an indelible impression
upon his St. Barnabas caregivers just
as he did with individuals and
organizations throughout Western
Pennsylvania. During his career Mr.
Lowry directed Blue Cross’ community
affairs dollars toward St. Barnabas
fundraising events and programs. He
and his wife, both native Pittsburghers,
supported St. Barnabas Free Care Fund
personally as well.
A champion for the less fortunate,
Mr. Lowry was involved in numerous
civic organizations and served on the
advisory board for the John G. Rangos,
Sr. School of Health Sciences of
Duquesne University, where he earned a
bachelor of science degree in accounting.
It was his human side and humility that
people loved. A beautiful funeral mass
was held at SS John and Paul in
Franklin Park where an impressive
assembly of friends, colleagues and
family mourned but also celebrated the
life of this great man.
His son Michael reflected on his father’s
commitment to family and service and
remembered him as a “man of action”
who “woke up every day with a purpose.”
He is survived by his wife of 57 years,
Marie; a daughter, Karen Karasinski
(John); sons Michael (Jolene), William
(Angela) and nine grandchildren.
In the benevolent tradition set forth by
the Lowrys, memorial donations are
directed to St. Barnabas Charities.
Please join family and friends in
remembering William Lowry with a
contribution by sending your gift in
the enclosed yellow envelope or giving
online at StBarnabasCharities.com.
