From the Senior Minister

The Greatest Love of All So the other day I was sitting at my computer getting ready to write my March newsletter article (the one you

are reading right now). I knew that I wanted to focus on what Capital City Christian Church and our leadership is trying to do in regards to Children’s Ministry. And I was humming in the back of my mind a song that was made popular back in 1986 by Whitney Houston. Her number one hit, “The Greatest Love of All,” I learned was not an original song to her, but had been written back in the mid 1970’s, and her rendition of the song was at least the third release. The line that was in my head was the

opening lyric: “I believe the children are our future—Teach them well and let them lead the way.” OK, you have to admit, that’s a pretty good lyric. And in the face of the challenges we face in our church to-day, we need to embrace that lyric even more. For the past several years, we have emphasized and tried to excel at what we are good at. If you were at the Taster’s Delight, an annual Senior’s Ministry event back in January, you know first hand that we still have a strong impact on the Senior Citizen community in our area. Kudos to our Senior’s Minis-try. But we have increasingly identified MORE that we need to be doing to reach CHILDREN and YOUNG FAMILIES. Which means that many of us, if not ALL of us, regardless of our age or season of life, need to make great big strides to do more to reach out to younger families, especially with elemen-tary age kids. Now we have some GREAT volunteers that have been more than committed to Children’s Ministry, and we couldn’t continue the strides we have in place without them. Over the holidays we have asked Becky Carter to take on the task of Children’s Director for K-5th Grade, primarily on Sunday mornings. This is still a volunteer position, but Becky has a long history working with young kids, and even with CCCC. She has a lot of great ideas to bring some much needed structure and foundation to Sunday School and Children’s Church. Becky will still need to count on the team of volunteers that have helped so much for so long, but don’t be surprised if she taps you on the shoulder to consider helping out in one area or another. I am looking forward to her leadership and enthusiasm, but I am looking even more for-ward to our church family’s response to “stepping up our game.” Taking Children’s Ministry to another level is VITAL at this point in the life of CCCC. The CHILDREN really ARE our future, and we must em-brace them and their families for the church to have a bright future. Just as a side note: when I looked up the lyrics of Whitney Houston’s hit single, “The Greatest Love of All,” I scanned down to almost the middle of the song, only to find out how much I DISAGREED with most of the message of this song. YES, the children ARE the future, but they CAN be the PRESENT in GREAT BIG ways. In addition, “learning to love yourself” is NOT the greatest love of all. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Jesus tells us that the GREATEST love of all is when we give up our life for someone else. In His Service, Allen G

Communication From the Leadership

Is God Stretching You? Ever heard of Stephen Perry? Perry was a 19th-century British inventor and businessman. His corporation was the Messers Perry and Co, Rubber Manufacturers of London, which made early products from vulcanized rubber. On March 17, 1845, Perry received a patent for the rubber band. Now there seems to be some controversy about just who ‘invented’ the rubber band, however Per-ry got the patent. He went out on a limb and applied for the rights to the product. Over the last month, God has been preparing us to be stretched. We have heard from four people about different ways they are letting the earth hear His voice. We have an opportunity to reach people from right where we are. Maybe you don’t have a desire to go to Africa, Seth does. Maybe you are not interested in running a Christian camp, Johnny is. Maybe you don’t want to be a professor at a college, Dr. Hardin is, or even though St. Lucia sounds like a great place to go; you don’t want to go be a missionary there. Well, your pledge to Faith Promise enables all this to allow the earth to hear His voice. In their song ‘Until the Whole World Hears’, writer and lead singer Mark Hall of the group Casting Crowns writes this; Lord I want to feel your heart, and see the world through your eyes, I want to be your hands and feet, I want to live a life that leads. Ready yourselves, Let us shine the light of Jesus in the darkest night, May the powers of darkness tremble as our prais-es rise, Until the whole world hears Lord we are calling out, Lifting up Your name for all to hear the sound, Like voices in the wil-derness we're crying out, As the day draws near, We’ll sing until the whole world hears.

Now one of the most interesting things about Casting Crowns, if you are not familiar with their music or their story; they start-ed as a youth band in Florida. They began in order to draw young people to Christ. Their mission statement; which includes honoring the great commission, Hall also states, they are a ministry of discipleship. Casting Crowns has gone on to fulfil their mission and maintains an interesting schedule. The band only travels Thursday thru Saturday so they can be in their home church on Sundays and Wednesday nights. They have sold over 10 million copies of their 13 records, yes the industry still uses the word records! So you say how does that relate? God is needed in every life, every day. This group has allowed God to stretch them from worship band to multi-platinum selling artist. Do we need a good stretch so that the earth can hear His voice? Much like the humble rubber band, it might seem boring at first, but if Stephen Perry had never had an idea…

How can we stretch ourselves by sending the Word into all the world? Prayerfully consider your pledge. God will always meet you there! He will give you the answer! Thanks for allowing the Earth to Hear His Voice! The Elders
