Faith Partners – A New Ministry of Our SavioursHelping Churches Take a Team Approach to Alcohol and Drug Issues A few months ago a new ministry began at Our Saviours. Its focused on addressing alcohol/ drug issues Why should our church address alcohol/drug issues? In both congregaon and community whole families are hurt by alcohol and drug problems every day. There were over 55,000 opioid deaths last year and over 88,000 from alcohol. These problems also impact our church. In a recent survey of 199 worshippers at Our Sav- iours (N=134), 49% of respondents said that they were currently affected by or concerned about the alcohol/drug use of someone close. Shouldnt our church focus on spiritual issues? Every dependency is mental, emoonal and physical. But, at its heart, dependency is about the darkness of pung a false god in God's place. The drug becomes the core value and ul- mately the purpose of the persons life. Thats true of alcohol, other drugs, food, work, gam- bling, codependency and so on. When we look at all the possible dependencies, virtually all of us are affected by this spiritual issue. Dont we already have AA meengs at Church? Yes. We host Twelve Step meengs and several members of our team are engaged in Twelve Step recovery, but AA and Alanon are not ministries of our Church. Our Saviour s has its own role to play in recovery and prevenon. Some of us wanted our church to play its full role. Our Vision is for alcohol and drug dependence to become a casserole disease. Imagine that everyone is just as comfortable bringing casseroles to a family whose mother is in alcohol/drug treatment as one whose mother is hospitalized for cancer. Our teams mission is to walk with Christ and neighbor healing brokenness together by ad- dressing alcohol and drug issues. Who is on this team? And how can I get involved? Members of our team include Alissa Gunning, David Grabarkewitz, DeAnn Cudly, Gidge Schmidt, Janet Schmidt, Jeff Hoadley, Jim Germer, Marty Rus, and Oo Schultz. We meet every other Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Founders Room. Our next meengs are November 1 and 15. Please feel free to contact Oo Schultz starfi[email protected] 402-770-1974 about your interest or concerns. ~The Faith Partners Team OSLC | November 2019 To walk with Christ and neighbor, healing brokenness together. In this Issue... Finally!

The celebration luncheon is now scheduled for Sunday, November 17, following the late service (barring any further delays). The kitch-en will be blessed and dedicated at all services that weekend.

In preparation for this celebration, we’ll need all hands on deck to help us get the kitchen up to service-ready standards! The planned completion date is Nov. 15, so mark your calendars for a kitchen prep day on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9am-noon.

Our Food Philosophy is: Food is a gift of God’s grace that brings us together for the growth and nourishment of body, soul, and com-

munity.

We’re ready to Go!!!

Distractions in Worship This is not a new topic. In fact, many biblical scholars have suggested that this very concern is what prompted Paul to write in 1 Corinthians 14:34, “women should be silent in the churches.” In fact, one of the scenarios theologian N. T. Wright proposes is that the men and women were segregated in the church—women sitting on one side and men on another. In that day, the theological conversations may have been a formal setting in which formal language was used—in this case in Corinth, Greek. However, many of the women may have only understood local dialects. Perhaps they got bored with the conversa-tion. You would, too, if you didn’t understand much of what was being said. Or perhaps they were speak-ing across the divide to ask their husbands what was being said. This would lend itself to verse 35: “lf there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home.”

Either way, the talking was not being used to build up the gathering, so Paul (if one believes it was Paul and not a scribe who added it later on, as some manuscripts suggest) chastised those causing chaos to be quiet until a more appropriate time.

Many of us who are parents know how it feels to try to keep our children quiet and respectful when they’re bored or restless. We find ourselves more embarrassed than anyone else, though those around us are generally quite gracious and helpful. But children aren’t the only challenges. Sometimes, a cell phone rings because someone forgot to turn it off. Sometimes a hearing aide is squeaking, unbeknownst to its owner. Sometimes those ‘stage whispers’ that pass between two people aren’t as quiet as they think. And yes, sometimes there are people in our midst who seem less-than-respectful of what is happening in this space.

What do we do? How do we handle it? We might react: get angry and refuse to come to worship. We might respond: by being proactive and supportive. Let me make some suggestions:

In the case of children, many of you know all too well how challenging it can be. Noisy children do not mean bad parents, but it might be an indication that a parent is at a tipping point. Perhaps a parent doesn’t know what to do after doing everything they can think of. Consider sitting with the family as support. Dance with the little girl who is restless. Play tic-tac-toe with the boy whose hands and mind and mouth just want to go, Go, GO! Your ministry in this moment is as much a moment of grace as the hymns we sing, the prayers we offer, and the sermon you might have slept through. Or, at the very least, sit in a different part of the Sanctuary, where you can hear and focus on what is before you.

In the case of cell phones and hearing aides and all sorts of other devices—just roll with it. If the own-er can hear it, they’re probably already embarrassed. No point in giving a dirty look. We’ve all been there. Let it go. If the owner CAN’T hear it, move in close and help them out.

In the case of people being disrespectful during worship—talking or some other distraction: I get it. Believe me. It distracts me, too. However, consider the possibility that the ‘language’ we’re using—insider, religious language—may not be all that familiar to these people. Perhaps, in lieu of what’s hap-pening before them, they are filling their time with conversation and community. Before you get an-gry—before you storm out and never come back—try sitting with them. Help them navigate the ser-vice. They’ll probably understand, without you having to confront them, that they’re behavior isn’t helping. But even better, they’ll understand that you didn’t simply judge them as bad Christians but as people who may need some help making sense of the service.

The reality is that some who come to worship may not have ever been to a church before. Or perhaps their previous worship experience was very different. They may feel lost or just unimportant. They may simply be bored. It’s okay to insist on creating a worship space that facilitates your experience. It’s not okay to judge those who are still beginning that journey. Who knows...maybe that distraction will be what leads you to experience worship in a new and fulfilling way!
