FAITH IN ACTION

The Waconia United Food Shelf will be collecting food to

fill Thanksgiving Bags for our clients so they are assured of

having a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The Bags will be

assembled on November 12th to be distributed to each family

that shops during November. Below is a list of needed food

items for the bags. We will be putting together 200 bags this

year. Your donations are appreciated. You may drop them at

church or during open hours at the food shelf.

Boxed potato flakes, Gravy Packets, stuffing such as Stove

Top, Canned cranberries, Canned vegetables either corn or

green beans, Large package of Jello, Canned mixed fruit,

Canned pumpkin, Evaporated milk (to make the pie) Cash

donations are welcome to purchase the frozen pie crusts,

cool whip, and aluminum pans for cooking the turkey.

Clients will be able to choose between a coupon for a

turkey at Mackenthun's or frozen turkey roasts.

We estimate the entire meal would cost about $35.

Dear People of Faith, November is the month of Thanksgiving. I am thankful for so many things. I thank God for a great and fun family. I thank God for a wonderful pastoral colleague in Pastor Christine and a great staff to work with every day. I thank God for a wise and committed Church Council. I thank God for the scores of volunteers who serve Faith faithfully every week. I thank God for you. We have had an amazing fall. Financial giving and worship attendance are up, we received 13 new families into our membership, the fall Festival and the Powered by Meatballs dinners were fantastic, dozens of members are

involved in small groups. God is doing great things at Faith. We are wrapping up our 2017 stewardship campaign “Powered by Faith-Year Two.” Please turn in your financial commitment cards as soon as possible. Your offerings make life saving-life transforming ministry possible. If you are reading this newsletter you have some kind of relationship to Faith Lutheran. One of my mentors, Bill Starr, the former president of YoungLife, often said,” You are the sum total of your relationships.” When all of you who have a relationship with Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia are added together, the sum total is a powerful force for Jesus Christ in our area. Tuesday Bible Study

The Tuesday Bible study is currently finishing the book of ACTS. On

November 1 we will begin a new study, Paul's letter to the

EPHESIANS. In this letter Paul writes about what it means to be in the

body of Christ, the church. His mission here was to combine all

Christians into one body. It was a letter to strengthen the church. This

book will take us thru November.

In December we will plan to do some short Christmas themed

studies. More information about these will be forthcoming.

The Tuesday Bible study is for anyone interested in Scripture.

Something new is learned each week whether you are a long time student

of Scripture or just beginning your journey. Consider joining us. We meet each Tuesday morning at

Westview Acres at 9:15 am and at 7:00 pm at Faith. Choose the time

and Jesus." Dan retired as Police Chief of Eden Prairie in 2007 after serving 25 years in

law enforcement. He then went to seminary, was a pastoral

assistant here at Faith, and now serves as a chaplain for several police associations. Dan is also the founder and president of Public Safety Ministries Inc., a

nonprofit ministry for the public safety professions that is supported by our church.

EMBRACING A SPIRITUALITY OF DARKNESS

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, some of us might notice shifts in our moods, energy levels, sleep routines, and even our spiritual life. Moving from season of “light” to a season of “darkness” can feel foreboding, if not downright depressing.

Over the past 8 weeks, Pastor Dale and I have been facilitating a discussion on Barbara Brown Taylor’s excellent book, “Learning to Walk in the Dark” for our Thursday morning book study. We’ve been exploring how, oftentimes, there is a human tendency to label certain seasons of life or emotions as “good,” while labeling others as “bad.” For instance, we might think that “happiness” is a “good” emotion that signifies being “closer to God,” while we might label the so-called “dark” emotions, such as sadness and grief, as “bad” and something to be avoided. In our attempts to avoid these so-called “dark” emotions, some Christians practice what Barbara Brown Taylor calls, “spiritual bypassing” as a way of avoiding dark emotions. Christians might “market faith in God as protection from every kind of darkness. ‘Walk as a child of light,’ the advertisement reads, ‘and all your nights will be bright as day.’” Taylor argues that Christian at-tempts to “spiritually bypass” the dark emotions is very destructive for our spiritual lives and has alienated some from church life. She says: “This solar version of Christianity works for so many people that those who cannot buy it are bound to wonder what is wrong with us.”

Pastor Dale and I have been inspired by Brown’s study of the dark, and the profound wisdom that can be gleaned from “learning to walk there.” Consequently, we’ve decided to do a 3-week sermon series that we’re calling, “Finding God in Dark Places,” exploring how God shows up in so-called “dark” places in our lives: through grief, through failure, and through suffering.

…We Need YOU! - Fall Women’s Retreat...

Ladies - Do you need time to breathe and re-center yourself after the start-

up of a busy Fall? Last April, thirty-eight women from Faith Lutheran (and other friends!) enjoyed a

great 24-hours of laughter, spiritual growth, and prayer as we explored the “Lady Godiva’s” in our lives who had mentored, supported, and guided us in our walk of faith. Oak Ridge Conference Center in Chaska was a beautiful

(and easily accessible) place to get away, enjoy nature, and to meet new friends.

This Fall, we will take another 24-hours to recalibrate and focus on the topic of God, Girlfriends, and Chocolate with retreat presenter, Gaye Lindfors. Life is an extraordinary journey. We experience sunny days, open roads, beautiful rest stops, and annoying detours, and potholes. Our trip can go from carefree to You’ve got to be kidding me! in just moments. To make the journey more faith-filled and joy-filled, let’s share the adventure with God, girlfriends, and chocolate! During this weekend retreat

we will re-discover how to experience the journey, rather than just going along for the ride.

It is a vulnerable and fearful thing to be without a place to call your own. To be without a place to call home is an experience no one can manage alone. Through the Families Moving Forward program, Faith has joined other churches in the Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative across Carver and Scott counties to create places in our buildings and in our life together for families experiencing homelessness. During our hosting week, October 23-30, you created a place for “displaced” families. You proclaimed good news, you spoke the gospel of God’s love and belonging and welcome without words in your actions during our hosting week. You joined “processions of people telling the good things of God” by transforming classrooms into family bedrooms, sharing meals and conversation and activi-ties each night. You have been Christ’s eyes of compassion and hands of blessing. Your beautiful feet have accompanied these fami-lies on their journey toward a place they can call their own home. Thank you for another wonderful week hosting Families Moving Forward! You have made a difference in the lives of the families. You have proclaimed the gospel. Your presence, prayers and gifts have deeply touched the guests. “You are a blessing. Thank you.” Faith will host Families Moving Forward again January 15-22, 2017. As many of you may know, my dad recently passed away. I thank so many of you, who shared your thoughts and prayers with me and my family. And in return, I’d like to share with you a glimpse into who dad was and what he meant to all of us. As we were going though Dad’s stuff, we found something he had written in response to the question “When you die, how would you like to be remembered?” His simple response: “It would be nice to just be remembered. After having pretty well established your character and reputation over the years, I doubt if cold words chiseled in a gravestone would create or diminish what your family and friends may have already determined.” Dad lived a very big life in so many ways. A decorated “Greatest Generation” South Pacific Combat Marine, a 30 year Minneapolis Firefighter and Arson Investigator, husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa… But Dad seldom told people who he was. He simply lived a life where he “established his reputation and character.” A reputation and character that was overwhelmingly positive, but still a human being, complete with flaws and imperfections. And we will remember him. Dear God, Please help us to understand that we will not be remembered by what we say we are, but simply by who we are. Amen. Take Care, Pastor Dan Carlson

Have you been to Faith recently on Sunday morn-

ings, Tuesday afternoons or Wednesday nights?

This is a hip-happening place bursting at the

seams with young people and their families. Faith

is a vibrant, active and growing congregation.

Children and youth are present, appreciated and

supported.

Passing on faith to the next generation is a re-

sponsibility and a privilege that we all share. The

church and the home are partners in introducing

our young to good and faithful role models. Faith

Lutheran has worked to develop a triple A culture

– matching our children and youth with adults

who are authentic, available and affirming as

teachers, shepherds, helpers, guides, leaders and

mentors. These adult (and often teen) role mod-

els are the hands and feet of Jesus as they engage

children in meaningful and memorable encoun-

ters with Christ.

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do

not stop them; for it is to such as these that the

kingdom of heaven belongs.” As a congregation,

each and every one of us is called to reach out

and touch the lives of our young people. They are

“Because FAITH is the best place for kids to be!”

CHRISTMAS: WE’RE ON THE AIR and

our children are coming to you live from Studio 7

in downtown Bethlehem for an old fashioned

radio show – complete with a sound effects crew.

Our SPARK kids will remind us all to tune in for

the GOOD NEWS!

The traffic reporter will keep us up-to-date on

traffic around town while the weather reporter is

forecasting clear skies . . . a great night for

looking at stars (and a few angels)! We’ll hear

from the news crew that is live at the barn where

a savior is reported to have been born. The field

reporters are on their way to investigate bright

lights reported in the sky over a field where some

shepherds have been watching their sheep.

Practice CDs of songs will be distributed at

SPARK. Children who wish for solos or speaking

parts please respond to an email from Mary T.

Rehearsals will take place during SPARK. There

will be one dress rehearsal in the sanctuary the

week of the program.

The musical is for children in 1st—4th grade.

Preschool and Kindergarten children will share

songs and finger plays on the same day.

November Mission Offering: Ministry Partner: Families Moving Forward FMF Southwest serves families in Carver and Scott Counties that are experiencing homelessness. Last year FMF SW received 100 calls from families that were in need of shelter. A 2015 point-in-time count in Scott and Carver counties identified 44 homeless families with children on a single January night – the need is great, and the work we do here at Faith to support this ministry gave 20 families with 45 children the support they needed to find affordable, sustainable housing in 2015 . Looking toward December…

Faith SAGES present a performance by the Copper Street Brass Quintet

in Faith’s sanctuary on Monday, December 19th at 7:30 pm. This popular Christmas concert will

celebrate the stories, songs and sounds of the season. Through their original arrangements for brass. They’ll revisit music from

your favorite childhood Christmas movies and TV specials, such as The

Grinch, Nutcracker, Frozen and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Mark your calendars now to hear this

highly regarded group right here in our sanctuary.

The Giving Tree Program will begin again soon at Faith!

We will be collecting 350 gifts for local families who

receive assistance from the CAP Agency and the Waconia

United Food Shelf – that’s 100 more than we’ve helped out

with in the past. Spread the word that we need a little

extra help this year! Look for the Christmas tree and sign-

up sheets in the gathering space in the coming weeks.
