The Holiday season has come and gone with a flourish. The remnants can be seen in the bare Christmas trees lying beside the road waiting to be picked up by the trash collectors and 75% off sales on the remaining Christmas merchandise. It all seems just a blur of busyness. Now the New Year looms before us. Many will not see much difference except trying to remember to write “2017” instead of “2016.” The government is still in gridlock. Daily routines have returned to normal. The struggles and trials of life that may have taken a back seat during the busyness of the holiday season have now come back to forefront of our thinking. If this is what marking the New Year is all about, why do we bother if nothing has really changed and we see nothing really changing in the new year? The New Year is merely a date on the calendar that marks our march through our understanding of time. We use this time of rolling into a new year as a place to make “resolutions” or set goals for the coming year - the most popular of which are losing weight and getting into better physical shape. The gym will be pretty busy until about March when the newness rubs off and the real workouts begin. The diet will ease its way out of our lives in a few months. Will anything really change? Perhaps we should take this New Year’s opportunity to look back instead of looking forward. There was a theology professor who took the opportunity of New Year’s to write down his understanding of God and God’s work in his life. He then compared it to what he wrote the year before on the same subject. He considered the year wasted if he had not seen any growth or progress in his understanding God and God’s working in his life. We are not called to a stagnant faith. Faith is a dynamic, ever-changing journey that should draw us to a closer, more intense walk with God. So maybe there are some questions we need to ask ourselves as we head into this New Year. Have I grown in my faith? Have I made progress on the spiritual journey I began at my baptism? Have I grown in my understanding of God and His will for my life? Is there any difference in my faith-life today when compared to a year ago? Have I availed myself any opportunity to learn more about His Word, the Bible? Have I found new ways to serve Him and His church? All of us are at different points on our spiritual journey. Some are happy where they are on their walk with God and do not desire to go any further. Some are constantly seeking new understandings and new visions of what God has in store for them. Some are still seeking to understand what this faith journey is all about. Some have never made a commitment to the journey. It is important for us to be honest with ourselves and God about where we are on the journey. It is just as important that we understand that it is a journey. Accepting Christ and being baptized and joining the church are beginning points. They are not ends in themselves. God calls each of us to go with Him on a journey - just as He called Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Peter, Paul and the rest of the disciples and prophets and Christian leaders throughout the ages. It will be an adventure in the fullest meaning of the word. It will not always be fun, but it will always accomplish God’s purposes. It will not always allow us to have everything we want, but the journey will fill us with everything we need. Committing to go on the journey means we are willing to step out of our comfort zones and be and do more for God than we are now. Just as Peter had to step out of the boat at the beckoning of Jesus to walk on the water, we need to step out in faith at the beckoning of Christ. As we step out in faith He asks us to keep our eyes on Him and not the storms around us. For if we take our eyes off of Him we will surely sink into the sea. But if we sink, we have the assurance that his hand will reach out and take ours and we will resume the journey together. So here’s to a New Year. Here’s to a renewed commitment to journey with God. May your journey be blessed this year. … Pastor Pete “MONDAYS WITH PETE” If you’d like to receive Pastor Pete’s Monday morning e-mail devotional “Mondays with Pete” please send your e-mail address to him at [email protected] OR...you can read his weekly devotional on the church website under “Pete’s Blog” or on the church’s Facebook page. JANUARY 2017

We have launched into a new year. The Holiday season has come and gone with a flourish. The remnants can be

seen in the bare Christmas trees lying beside the road waiting to be picked up by the trash collectors and 75% off sales on the remaining Christmas merchandise.

… Pastor Pete

ACTIVITIES UPDATE

What a great Christmas Luncheon we had on December 12th at Mitchell's Fish Market. We had a total of 30, and Jean even wore her Elf outfit - adorable. We ate, sang, opened gifts, had a short meeting and spent two hours sharing the Joy of the Christmas season.

Our next activity is Bowling (or watching others bowl) with lunch immediately afterward at Uncle Buck's Fish Bowl in Destin Commons on Friday, January 27, 2017, starting at 11am. We will meet at the church to carpool at 10:25am. There will be a computer Evite sent out in the new year (and a manual sign-up sheet located in the church reception area) so please respond "yes", sign up and join us for a super fun time. This event is for the women and men of the church, their families and friends. Bowling (or watching others bowl for an hour), then lunch! It's our CCW way to start a HAPPY NEW YEAR!! …Jan

Hello to all Community Church members and friends from your Congregational Care Committee. We also want to welcome back all snowbirds who are now in the area. We want you to know that we are here to lend a helping hand should you have a need for assistance, prayers for you or loved ones, a ride to church or an appointment or a visit from us, our deacons, Pastor "Scooter" or Pastor Pete. Please call Karin at the church office, 850-267-2599, with your requests and for contact info on the Congregational Care Person assigned to you. ...Kathy Romero, Deacon of Congregational Care

The Community Ukes played their ukuleles and sang at Brookdale on December 23rd. We performed in the main dining room and in the memory care unit. Many residents sang along and we enjoyed visiting with them.

Community Ukes is a relatively new addition to the Community Church music ministry. Pastor Scooter is our teacher, mentor and he keeps us in tune. We started with five and now have almost 20 in our group. We invite others to join us. We have not progressed so far that you can't catch up. Several of our musicians are not from our church so it is an ecumenical outreach. Class is Thursday mornings at 10am, upstairs at the church. The next class is January 19th.

“Until Christ Is Formed in You” (Galatians 4:19) Last year, I picked up a book on sale by Christian author, Lysa TerKeurst, entitled Unglued. I had been introduced to Mrs. TerKeurst through her blog, which I found very authentic and insightful. I was excited to read her book. About three chapters in, I could not put it down. Lysa blends candor and comedy with her own challenges in living the Christ-centered life. I would like to share with you a gem from her book in hopes that it will encourage you as it did me. In chapter three, Lysa recalls her visit to the Accademia Gallery in Florence,

Italy, where she longed to see the works of Michelangelo, namely David. The line was about two hours long to get in, and she made use of her time by reading (in detail) the museum brochure. She discovered that Michelangelo was not the artist who started the sculpture. It was commissioned before he was born, but others had abandoned the work—a nineteen-foot marble slab with partially sculpted legs, feet and torso. Almost 25 years later, Michelangelo resumed the work with resolve to finish the masterpiece. The author describes what she read in the brochure—how Michelangelo never left his David:

For more than two years he worked on and slept beside the six-ton slab of marble whose subject called to him from inside the unchiseled places. When at last the seventeen-foot David emerged, Michelangelo is reported to have said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” When asked how he made his statue, Michelangelo is reported to have said, “It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn’t look like David.”

As she waited in line, the unfinished works, labeled Prisoners, in the hallway leading to David captivated her. The Prisoners are sculptures, which had been started but never finished—abandoned without the artist ever freeing them from the marble. Thinking David was going to be the work that captured her attention, the Holy Spirit surprised her with a startling reality of how Prisoners are in many ways like Christians. We must allow God to work in and through our lives to chisel away everything that doesn’t look like Christ. Failure to do so would leave us short of being all God destined for us to be. “For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.” (Romans 8:29a) That is God’s purpose for us—to be like His Son, Jesus Christ.

Lysa writes a prayer and challenge for us all. I prayed this prayer, and I hope you will too:

O God, chisel us. We don’t want to be locked in our hard places forever. We want to be free. We want to be all that You have in mind for us to be...God please chisel…work on our hard places so we can leave the dark places of being stuck and come into the light of who You designed us to be.”

MUSIC MINISTRY

“A Tempo” is a musical term instructing the musician to return to the original tempo or beat. I think this certainly applies to our lives as Christians. Sometimes we get out of sync with God’s redemptive rhythm for our lives. Each day provides an opportunity for us to return to walk in tempo with Him. ...Scooter Ward

“Until Christ Is Formed in You” (Galatians 4:19) She reminds us, “God is calling us out—out of darkness, out from those places we thought would never get better, out of being stuck.”

May I remind you, “It is God who works in us both to will and to act according to His good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13) “He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it!” (Philippians 1:6) Let Him chisel away everything that is not Christ, so you can shine as His light in this dark world. To God be the glory; to you be the blessing! …Pastor Scooter [Various Quotes (above) from Lysa TerKeurst, Unglued (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2012), 35-36, italics mine.]

DATES TO REMEMBER: Wednesday, January 11th: Choir Rehearsals Resume @ 5pm Thursday, January 19th: Community Ukes Practice @ 10am

Sunday, February 5th: Undivided Gospel Concert @ 3pm

Thanks to all of our Christmas carolers from Community Church, Girl Scouts of South Walton, South Walton Seahawks Pee-Wee Cheerleading Champs and the wonderful parents who made this outreach event in our community a big success. We had 50+ carolers among three groups for senior/assisted living facilities: Somerby, Grand Boulevard and Brookdale. Approximately 240 residents received a handmade card and gift and our beloved Wills made sure everyone at Somerby got a hug. It was a great success.

Do you feel distant from God? Do you wonder sometimes if God is even there, and does He really care about you? Life can be tough. We all face difficult times and challenges, times when we feel as though God is far away. We go through seasons when it seems our walk with God is stagnant. But these are the times when God steps in, often when we least expect Him to. And every time He steps in, it is a miracle. Our hope is that when you hear these songs, you will hear God. God wants to step in. God will step in. Let Him in. Join us on February 5, 2017 at 3pm here at Community Church for a special musical concert from the Gospel group, UNDIVIDED. Since the summer of 1987, UNDIVIDED has answered the call of God upon their lives by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ through music. Their musical style ranges from New Southern Gospel to Inspirational Praise & Worship. Their mission is to help people realize the fundamental truth that relationships with family, friends and Jesus Christ are the most important foundations of life. The concert is free and open to the public. A love offering will be taken. Please be in prayer about this wonderful event, invite your family, friends and neighbors for a great time.

English as a Second Language Ministry

Dot Taylor, Director ESL

ESL students, teachers and staff ended the fall semester singing carols in English and Spanish. Students expressed their sincere thanks to their teachers. Since the last lesson was on the meaning of Christmas traditions, many of the students have a better understanding of our Christmas greetings and heritage.

On behalf of our El Shaddai friends, we thank the church missions for the generous Christmas gifts. Truly they are thankful people.

Next semester starts on January 10th at 6:30pm. We will welcome two new teachers and begin a new introduction class. Because it is difficult to access skill level in a brief conversation we will start a new student class and after a few weeks determine where we can place them to best meet their needs.

This month we are highlighting our morning class and teachers. They have been faithful since the first day and serve a broad range of skill levels. Their students range from needing to learn the alphabet to studying English for college classes. Good thing our teachers are smart! Their students love them and attendance is very good. Many thanks to Doris Tharpe, Margie Bach, Robin Lloyd and Peggy Darwin who teach this group.

Please keep our ESL ministry in your prayers. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please see Dot Taylor.
