Transcript of Faith Connections - Amazon S3 · book and imagined a vision of my life, someday, in the year 2020....

“Someday” always becomes today at some point. Twenty years ago the Dean of my doctoral program, Dale Galloway,

assigned us to read his book 20/20 Leadership, which addressed clear-sighted leadership. Dale urged us to claim God’s vision for our lives and ministry. At the time, I mused on the title of the book and imagined a vision of my life, someday, in the year 2020. Someday is now today.

God has a vision for our lives; what we can be if we are close to God, and love others. Living towards God’s vision of our lives does not happen unless we engage with God. Good intentions and wishful thinking do little to take us to where we and God desires us to be. A wise man once said, “Your habits determine your future”. What we habitually do will be what we become.

The beginning of the year delineates one year from the next. It can be a time of delineation in our lives, as well. I invite you to take time to assess the last year. Did you move closer to God and God’s dream for your life in the last year? What habits did you develop? A couple of months ago I shared four things God desires from people at Faith UMC. In 2020 how will you live so you can live God’s vision for your life?

Presence: How will you be present

for and with God? You can only be in

one place at one time. Your presence

will influence where you are in a

positive or negative way.

Purpose: What will be your main

purpose for 2020? Does it align with

God’s purposes? What habits will

embody and determine you achieving

your purpose?

Passion: What will you be

passionate about in 2020? Is your

passion aligned with God’s passion to

save, bring life, and heal? Is your

passion for God, or is your passion for

your position?

Prayer: Are you staying close to God

through prayer? If your vision is from

Jesus and for Jesus, then you will not

be able to do it yourself. You will need

“God’s Presence” in you and with you.

Find a way for the privilege of prayer to

be a habit.

At Faith UMC we live life with God and one another, reaching the world with God’s love through relationships and missions. It is our mission to be strong with God and love one another. The year 2020 will bring many challenges for our nation and the United Methodist Church. God’s presence, purpose, passion, and prayers will steady us and lead us to God’s vision even in the midst of storms. You don’t need darkness to shine your light, but your light is more distinctive in times of darkness. Jesus’ vision is for us to be distinctive in our devotion to Him and love for others. Someday is today. God’s future for you is now. Will you live it?

A special thanks to everyone who serves the Lord so willingly & faithfully!

This is the first newsletter article I’ve written since our extremely successful “Forever Grateful”

fundraiser on November 22. First of all, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who were able to join us that evening. Faith UMC had over 40 members in attendance, many of them who graciously volunteered to help with registration, raffle ticket sales and auction closeout. The room looked beautiful, the DJ was great as usual and we had a delicious Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Best of all, we made over $63,000. THANK YOU!!

Everyone has February 23 – March 1, 2019, circled on their calendar, right?? This is our week to host ChristNet in 2020. Even though It sounds far off, it is only a few weeks away. The sign- up sheets will be up on January 26 but if you have questions, suggestions, new ideas etc., please let me know before then. We could really use more entertainment, games, and activities in the evenings. I have always thought it would be fun to have a “Music Jam” with the guests some time but don’t know where to get the instruments. Anyone have any ideas?

As I told you last month, the rotating shelter opened for the season the second week in October and has been at capacity since. This week (12/8/19) we have 30 individuals staying with ChristNet. This includes a new mom and with her three month old baby. It is sad, however she is surrounded by love and caring folks when she stays with ChristNet.

Jim & Cindy Allison and Tom & Michele Partch hosted their annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Daytime Center with over 20 guests. Our nighttime shelter guests stay at the host site all day on Holidays but we have many daytime guests who are marginally housed or living outside who were delighted to share a wonderful meal, love, and friendship. Thank you!

Coming up on March 14, 2020 will be our annual Carrabba’s fundraiser! It’s always great food and a nice little fundraiser for ChristNet. Tickets for Carrabba’s will be available in late February / early March. We’re going to get that building completed yet!!

I cannot say THANK YOU often enough for the support and commitment our Faith family gives to ChristNet. You are AWESOME! I wish you a peaceful, joyous holiday season filled with the love of Christ, which you so generously share. Wishing you a MERRY CHRISTMAS and God’s blessings.

And, as always, please keep our ChristNet guests in your prayers for safety, warmth, and strength through this holiday season and the coming months of inclement weather.

In Faith,

Linda Dickman, ChristNet Coordinator

Happy New Year to all. God's peace be with you. This article will be short and sweet. We are all taking a break! A great way to start January is to announce our two nominated Outstanding Service members, Lori Walach and Carolyn Engle. Much thanks and appreciation to these wonderful ladies for their hard, dedicated work on behalf of Faith United Methodist Women, especially during the Bazaar. Lori gives an entire week during Bazaar, doubling up on work the next week. I am sure you have noticed how festive the Pantry always appears. This is Lori and her dedicated crew making that magic. Gorgeous! Carolyn took on the task of ticket sales for the Bazaar from Naida Scharboneau. She was responsible for all the ticket sales. Wow! Not many are willing to take that on. And Carolyn was always one of the faithful to work every Monday at the Bazaar workshops. Lori and Carolyn were recognized and given their appreciation pins during our Bazaar friendship/prayer circle we always have right before the Bazaar opens its doors on Friday morning. It was a fine moment. Thank you wonderful ladies! We did well on our Bazaar. The disbursement of funds have not yet been approved by the membership, so that will have to wait until February's newsletter. Rest assured, this will be prayerfully and joyfully accomplished. We are back in business and ready to go in January. Be with us! But remember, you run the risk of making a friend or even having fun. Be careful. Leadership Meeting (the old Executive Board) is January 7 at 1:00 P.M. and ALL are welcome. Church Women United meets January 3 at 12:30 P.M. (Place to be announced). Bazaar Workshop begins on January 6 at 10:00 A.M. Oh yes, it begins again! Faithful Readers begins on January 21 at 11:00 A.M. January 28 will begin our Afternoon Delight session at 2:00

P.M. Ladies' Lunch is January 14 at noon, Movie Night is January 24 at 6:30 P.M, and the Prayer Shawl Group meets most Thursday’s at 7:00 P.M. We are also planning a special January program (to be announced soon). Finally, I would like to wish a belated Happy Birthday to my dear sister and twin, Linda Talbert. Actually, our B-Day is on December 17, and has not yet happened, so technically, I am not late. Linda joined our church a few years back and has turned out to be a hard worker for Faith. And Linda, secretly, can run that dishwasher! Yes, call her for help. Happy Birthday, Soul Sister. Wrapping it up, now. Be always in God's peace and always in God's service. January 2020

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34. Be a disciple, deny yourself. What does that mean? It seems like a big ask. Or is it? As we grow in our relationship with Christ, we should have a desire to do more for Christ. Think of all we ask of Him. Remember, all that He has already done for us. In December, we were present during the season of Advent. On the first Sunday we participated in the Advent Family Craft Day. Thanks to Mrs. Stefan and others, we participated with the younger members of

our church in making Advent crafts. We also enjoyed homemade hot chocolate and other great sweet treats. On that day we also, hung bells on Faiths’ Christmas tree (front yard) in memory of loved ones who were no longer present to celebrate the Advent season. We now have 80 bells on our Christmas tree. What an awesome ministry! On the second Sunday of December, the youth group made “No Sew Fleece Blankets”. These blankets were presented to the first responders in Trenton. It is our hope that these blankets will provide comfort to those our Police and Firefighters serve this winter. On the third Sunday of December, the youth group made “Christmas Cards” for those currently on our prayer list, here at Faith, and also for residents in local nursing homes, as well. Thank you to Laura Trosien, Rebecca Caldwell and Pastor Wayne for helping with this fun activity. What a wonderful way for the Youth Fueled by Faith to share the love of Christ during the Christmas season!

Have a blessed and happy New Year!

Keeping it in Faith,

Cheryl Lentner – Youth Coordinator 734-726-2437

Welcome 2020! All the hustle and bustle of the

Christmas season is winding down, as a new year

begins. I am excited to begin a new season of

Sunday School, too! January is a wonderful time for

learning and exploring all the good things Jesus

Christ shares with us!

December was a very busy time for all of us! We

started the month with our Advent Craft Day. It was

so much fun for many of our adults to get to spend

some one-on-one time with the children. We made a

few crafts, ate pizza and salad, drank hot cocoa with

all the toppings, and decorated yummy sugar

cookies! A special thank you to Karin Hiske, Grace

Ann Beebe, The Allison’s, and Cheryl Lentner and

the youth group for all of their help!

We were also working hard on our Christmas

program, “Twas the Evening of Christmas”. We were

able to read this beautiful and familiar spin-off to the

congregation, while the youth acted out the parts to

the Christmas story and our children performed

some special musical pieces. It was a pleasure to

share the talents of our children and youth with the

church.

Our Children’s Ministry Team met for the first time in

December. We have a lot of things to accomplish

looking ahead to 2020. One of our important goals is

to put together a Children’s Protection Policy and

begin training our volunteers. We are also looking at

ways to make our areas safe for our children,

bringing in more programs for families, and

organizing the spaces we have. If you are interested

in being part of our team, please let me know. We

also are in continued need of people to volunteer to

help in our Sunday school programs. Please pray

about this area and if you feel called to work with the

kids, please contact me. The more people we have,

the bigger impact we will make!

Blessings in the New Year!

Advent Dinner Celebration THANK YOU for supporting a wonderful Advent Dinner coordinated by Faith UMW on Dec. 4.

Joy Price greeted us with a refreshing cup of punch in the Parlor.

Greetings were given by President Laura Hayman and Prayer was given by Pastor Wayne Price which opened the celebration in Compton Hall.

A delicious dinner was catered by Sammy’s Cucina in Woodhaven. Four teens helped with the serving and clean up. Each table was decorated with a poinsettia from Schwartz Nursery. A marvelous dessert table coordinated by Yasuko Schultz was full of treats that everyone enjoyed.

Our Sanctuary was the setting for the musical presentation, “Have You Heard?” by our Chancel and Bell choirs. The talented musicians were directed by Stephanie Bell assisted by pianist Daphne Mitchell and organist Sandy Strall. Thank you to all!

Advent is a special time for Christians as we prepare for Christmas and the birth of Jesus. The Faith United Methodist Women trust this was truly a meaningful event to enrich the fellowship and faith within our church.

Blessings in 2020,

Alice Shenton

A NOTE FROM OUR FINANCIAL SECRETARY

We have changed our financial system to Servant Keeper. This will result in your annual Contribution Statement looking a little different; but it will contain the same information! Additionally, your statement will show your 2019 pledge AND your 2020 pledge. As a result, you will not receive a letter from me to verify your 2020 pledge. When you receive your statement in January, please review the information carefully and let me know immediately if there are any corrections to be made.

Blessing to all of you for your generous giving in 2019, and your continued generosity in 2020. Together we can make a difference in the name of Jesus Christ.

Volunteers Needed to Help at St. Phillip’s Food Pantry

We are looking for people to help at the St. Phillip's

Food Pantry on Wednesdays, from 10:45 - 1:00

during the months of January and February. There

will be a sign-up sheet in the corner lobby for those

who are interested. We need 2 volunteers each

week and you do not need to commit for an entire

month. The address for St Philips is 1790 Fort St,

Trenton, just north of Harrison.

St. Philip’s Food Pantry serves between 30 and 60

clients (individuals and families) each week. At the

Food Pantry, clients are able to select food items

that they know they will use, instead of receiving a

generic box of food. The Food Pantry is also the

Temporary Food Assistance Program site for the

City of Trenton and once a month there is a

“commodities day” when foods from the U.S.

Department of Agriculture are distributed.

Volunteers work one-on-one with clients as they

select their food items, place these items in bags and

boxes in a shopping cart and help them load the

groceries into their cars. This volunteer opportunity

does require standing, walking and some lifting.

Unlike the St. Timothy’s Food Pantry, we will not be

involved in stocking or pre-packing boxes of food.

If you would like further information on this, please

contact either Sue or Ray Yee at 734-789-7771.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Dear Friends in Faith,

Thank you so much for the great response to the 2020 stewardship drive. Your generosity and the prayerful consideration you made in pledging to the Stewardship Campaign of Faith Church has given us a place to start our work in 2020. We will be able to work together to increase our ministry through the new ministry teams that are developing.

We received pledges for this year that were up over 10% from 2019 – not only from folks who were moved to give more than in the past, but also by receiving more new pledges this year. We were up almost 11% in number of pledges received for 2020. We increase from 71 pledges in 2019 to 79 for 2020. It will be a blessed and exciting year to see our congregation putting these donations to work and increasing God’s presence in our world. There are many new initiatives starting this year – I hope you will take a step forward and find an area that speaks to you to put your gifts into practice.

SOUPER Bowl

is February 2

A hot bowl of soup warms the soul during

the cold winter, so please help us by bringing in cans of soup. The Trenton Food Pantry distributes soup to needy families and the Flat Rock Soup Kitchen serves soup at each meal and both groups can always use our help. There will be a table set up in the main lobby on Sunday, February 2. Please drop off your cans of soup before going home to enjoy the game! Thanks for all your help. ATTENTION ONLINE GIVERS

We are changing our online giving system effective

January 1, 2020. I will be emailing you instructions

on how to cancel your current giving on Parish Soft

and how to input your giving on the new system with

Vanco. Please look for my email in the next week

and contact me if you have any questions or need

my help in setting up your online giving.

If you are currently not an online giver and would like

to become one, please contact me and I will walk

you through the process. Online giving takes away

the need to fill out a check and envelope and then

remembering to bring it on Sunday. It takes away

the worry of not fulfilling your pledge since you set

your contribution up once and the system does the

work for you.

HOPE AGAINST TRAFFICKING Presentation SUNDAY, JANUARY 12 at 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Faith UMC - 2530 Charlton Rd. Trenton. 734-671-5211

“Hope Against Trafficking” is a Southeast Michigan-based campaign in support of the fight against human trafficking and is presented by Monarch Wings, a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization. Hope Against Trafficking is a 24-month residential program that provides restorative housing and comprehensive services focused on physical, mental, emotional and economic transformation. This dedicated housing and programming is committed to serving adult female survivors of sex and labor trafficking induced by threat, force and/or coercion.” For more information see: www.hopeagainsttrafficking.org On Sunday, January 12 we welcome a speaker from Hope Against Trafficking in the sanctuary to share with and enlighten us about human trafficking. This is an ongoing and extremely epidemic happening right here in Michigan, and right in our downriver area. It is our hope that through this presentation we can help our youth & parents to be aware and mindful of this ever-present danger of human trafficking. This is a community event and all are welcome to attend. Hosted by Faith’s Youth Group. For additional information please contact Cheryl Lentner, Youth Coordinator or the church office.
