Where Do Fairy-Tales Come From?
Tales have existed for thousands of years
No one can pin point exactly when most tales started (there are a few exceptions)
Originally told orally
Only literary versions survive
Most are a “version” of what was told the generation before and are much different than the original story
Usually involve magic of some kind
Some are commonly known and have been sensationalized by Walt Disney, many are not as popular; you can find at least one from every culture
WHAT ARE SOME FAIRY-TALES YOU KNOW?
Charles Perrault Little Red Riding Hood

Fairy tales usually start with “once upon a time” and are mostly in a faraway land and a long time ago.
They usually, but not always, end with “happily ever after.”

The Little Mermaid DiscussionToday we will be reading together part of Hans Christian Andersen’s novel. What we do not finish will be homework. After reading several pages we will pause to discuss for a bit, then read silently.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jip6ysIrf6E

Questions to ponder…1. Why do you think Disney left out the part of the story in which one of Ariel’s sisters is allowed to go to the surface when she is 15?2. The climax in the text and in the film are drastically different. What is the significance?3. Are The Little Mermaid and Ariel the same character?
Group Project AssignmentThis assignment is to demonstrate the concepts and ideas you have learned during the Fairy-Tale Unit and how they apply to literature and other tales.http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/1. You will be broken into 5 groups:
Beauty and the BeastSnow White Sleeping BeautyLittle Red Riding Hood
2. As a group, you will research and find as many versions of the tales as possible. Remember, most of you will have at least two (the original tale and Disney’s version) but for all the above there are many more. You will then use The Brother’s Grimm concept of “contamination” and strip all the details of each the stories to find the “core” story.3. A PowerPoint of this is due on Friday February, 24th. Be prepared to present your findings. The PP should include: a summary of the most original tale, several other tales and their authors, what is different about each of the tales and what the “core” story truly is. Pictures, video clips (we all love Disney) are welcome. Sources MUST be cited.
