In an emergency could law enforcement contact some-one for you? Chances are it could take an average of 6 HOURS. Yes 6 HOURS!

Come hear a Mom’s story that said that was unacceptable and how she set out to change how you and your family will be notified in an emergency. Truly Inspiring.

Dear Residents and Friends,

What is this publication?Because this is your neighborhood publication you can submit nominations, articles and images. You can promote what is important to you and your neighbors. Just email Eileen Bland [email protected] or your neighborhood content coordi-nator Jodi Carroll [email protected]

We are pleased to bring you the 22nd Issue of Fairways and Waterways and hope you enjoy the monthly publications. To protect your privacy, Fairways and Waterways is not publicly distributed outside of our distribution area or posted publicly online. This publication reaches only the residents living in Waterlefe and our trusted sponsors.

Fairways and Waterways is a social publication and it is designed to help build community. Each publication you see is unique to your neighborhood and reflects who you are as a community. A typical publication will include social event information specific to the residents, fun social events put on by the publication, activities and club information, business information, pictures by your neighbors, along with other information specifically tailored to your neighborhood.

Since this magazine is about you and your neigh-bors, we want and need your involvement. We are looking for several types of articles to be submitted each month, therefore, please take a few minutes to get acquainted with the types of articles we normal-ly include in the publication. If you have any article or story suggestions, please email us.

Neighborhood News - Any activity going on in the neighborhood or surround-ing area such as parades, block parties, barbeques, neighborhood clean-ups, school picnics, fundraisers, pool parties or golf events. We want to let you know what is going on and what has happened with these social events, but we need to know about them -- so email us!

Thank You to Our SponsorsIf you are enjoying this publication, please thank our advertisers. It is their invest-ment in Fairways and Waterways that makes each issue possible. We are able to offer you this publication completely free because of the local businesses that spon-sor our magazine. I am very selective in screening our advertisers to ensure that they can provide the types of service that you may need or want as a homeowner. If you currently utilize a business that does excellent work, let us know as they may want to reach out to your neighbors as well. Also, if you own or run a business and would like information on reaching your neighbors each month, contact me to be included in the free Resident Business Guide.

The best way to say thank you is to utilize these companies when choosing products or services for you and your family. Give them a chance to earn your business and please remember to mention that you saw them in your Fairways and Waterways.

Thank you for the resident support over the last 22 months. Without the sup-port of the community, I would not be able to bring you this publication. I love that I can help build community, friendships and help businesses grow locally. I sincerely hope you are enjoying this publication and look forward to it each month. I would love to hear your feedback on the publication and any business you have had a chance to work with. If there’s a special business you love to work with and don’t see them here, send me a quick note to [email protected]. Stay safe, be well, enjoy!

mpoa newsWelcome CommitteeChair: Barb Lee During February and March, the Welcome Committee focused on preparation for and hosting the March 11 New Resident Meet & Greet event. The event was well-received and well-attended. Representatives from key areas within the community provided brief overviews and answered questions. All new residents had the opportunity to meet other new residents, learn more about the community, and enjoy socialization time. We continue to welcome our new residents as they arrive -- they are excited to be here and eager to join our Waterlefe Family! Design Review Board (DRB)Chair: Michaela Valletta Spring will be here before you know it. It’s time for painting, landscaping, roof cleaning and other exterior projects. Please remember that any changes to the exterior of your residence or landscape require an application for change, which may be obtained via the Waterlefe website or at the Property Manage-ment office. In some cases, DRB approval may be required. Take a moment to review all of our approved color schemes. The paint scheme books are at the Property Management Office. Let’s con-tinue to keep Waterlefe beautiful! Communications Committee The Waterlefe Communications Committee is expanding and seeking new members. Keeping homeowners informed is the primary goal of this very important committee. The Commit-tee oversees the Fairways and Waterways publication and the newly-named Waterlefe Resident Resource Book (formerly the Welcome to Waterlefe Booklet). This committee is also integral to the review and modification of the content for the new Waterlefe-members.com website to be updated this summer. A Committee Chair is needed. If you are interested in learning more about this position, please contact Jen Milne at the River Club. Waterlefe CERT Co-Chairs: Jeff Brand and Tom Kalousek Now is the time to Prepare! Believe it or not, hurricane season is only two months away. The ‘official’ Atlantic Hurricane Season occurs June 1–November 30, 2018. The Waterlefe Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) wants all homeowners to be prepared. Get your copy of the Manatee County Hurricane Disaster Planning Guide from the River Club Office Manager. This thorough

guide offers a variety of information to assist with your preparation. For more information, visit the Manatee County website www.mymanatee.org/home/government/departments/public-safety/hurricane-readiness-center.html. Cable TV CommitteeChair: Jack RitchieUpdate on New Spectrum Contract As has been reported, the MPOA recently signed a contract to ex-pand and upgrade services it purchases from Spectrum on behalf of all 616 Waterlefe residents. It becomes effective April 1, 2018.

For the first time, CATV and internet services are now bundled together at discounted prices. Highlights of the new Spectrum contract continue to include CATV services, HBO, the music channels, plus two free converter boxes, 100/10 Mbps Internet speed and cost savings.

Changes with the new contract and what you need to do next:

Wait until April 1, 2018, and then contact Spectrum during the first few weeks of April by visiting their building on SR64 west of I-75 or calling them at 1-855-222-0102. (Note: If you are already a Spectrum phone customer, simply dial 611 on that phone.) Either way, tell them you want to “opt into the Waterlefe community’s bulk service plan.”

If you already have Spectrum internet, they need to confirm that your modem can handle 100 Mbps speed. They will deliver and install a new modem at no charge if your modem does not meet this standard. If you are not a Spectrum Internet user, they will deliver and install a modem/wireless router for you.

Review the new TV channel lists (available on the Waterlefe web-site) and Spectrum will advise you which package to order based on your preferences. The four lists are called TV Select (chan-nels for free), Digi Tier 1, Digi Tier 2 and then various combo packages for movies, sports, etc.

Spectrum should be able to answer all of your questions, but contact Jeff Dieter in the Property Management office with any related issues (941-747-6898). Please note that changing your services will impact your billing, temporarily resulting in a billing adjustment. These adjustments will be made within Spectrum’s next two billing periods, once the initial transition is complete.

Note: You should have received a mailed notice from Spectrum providing more information about this service enhancement. Donations needed for the Staff Appreciation Picnic

For the second year in a row, a group of active Waterlefe homeown-ers wish to thank the MPOA Staff by hosting a picnic at the pool for they and their families. Our staff works hard all year to make Waterlefe a great place to live, often sacrificing their holidays to serve Waterlefe residents and their families. Homeowners will plan the event, seek donations and also serve at the event. There will be a cookout and games. Donations will be used to fund gift bags and prizes. If you want to volunteer your personal efforts, please contact Janice Ritchie at [email protected]. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, May 6, 2018, from 12:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m. as the pool area will be closed and used for this event. You may leave your donation at the River Club, at the lock box outside of Property Management offices, or in person to either Deb Young or Janice Ritchie. Donations are welcomed through April 23, 2018. We look forward to your generosity and support.

RENO, LEAH & ROSEMARIENominated by a neighbor, we were introduced to Reno, his wife, Leah, and beautiful daughter, Rosemarie. They live on Discovery Terrace with their Mini-Daschund, Lido, and are Waterlefe resi-dents since 2004. Leah is a vet and Reno is a tennis coach work-ing with player development; he is also a motivational speaker and tennis consultant. Reno has played and coached soccer at the highest level.

Reno’s favorite activity is spending time with family and his hobbies are tennis, soccer, jet skiing, fishing as well as theater and the arts. In addition to his extensive stamp and coin collec-tion, he enjoys reading books that are worth reading and he is very involved with the Venice Institute for Performing Arts. As a family, they love to hang out at the beach or a playground in the area if their daughter wants to play. They love to take walks in the neighborhood.

Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Reno attended Strathclyde University in Scotland. His favorite movie is Braveheart, and says “As a Scotsman born and bred, what other movie could I love more?” He loves jazz music, eating Haggis and potatoes and properly made Italian food. When asked what his favorite restau-rant is, Reno told us, “ the Columbia on St. Armands Circle. I have been going to that restaurant for over 25 years. My good friend and ex-coach Nick Bollettieri introduced it to me way back when I was in my early 20’s.” Vacation destinations that are tops on the family list of favorites are home to Scotland, Italy, Greece and Up State New York.

In addition to coaching and mentoring young athletes, Reno played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the ‘90s and continues to follow their success and his favorite sports team is Liverpool F.C. Reno finds re-laxation when he’s spending time with his family and when it comes to family traditions he tells us, “I always wear a kilt on New Years as did my father and my Grandfather.” Reno & Leah’s four-year-old

daughter, Rosemarie, enjoys art, tennis and soccer -- “she is very creative and enjoys making things out of paper.”

“My favorite part of living in Waterlefe is the nature around us. We have nice walking trails with nature everywhere.”

FRIENDS M ost of our routine physicals do not cover any heart-re-lated tests. We might have an Echocardiogram as we age, but for many there is not a screening of the calcium

buildup in the heart. There is a test available: Calcium Heart Screening. This is a test that tells you if your heart has any artery calcium buildup (think stents, heart attacks, etc.). Typically you won’t get this test from your doctor unless you present with a heart issue; the test lets you prevent the serious issues from happening if you know about them early enough.

This procedure is a simple, inexpensive test that is readily avail-able. Now’s the time to become better informed concerning your Heart Health.

Calcium Heart ScreeningCosts do vary and may or may not be covered by your insurance. It’s always best to check with your healthcare provider.

Make an appointment for your spouse as well! The test takes about 15 minutes, and results are avail-able within a week. When you call, tell them you want a Calcium Heart Test. Now get started on your Heart Healthy Journey!

We essentially selected three different homes in three different neighborhoods,

and each time Joe spent time with us with the same enthusiasm and under-

standing. He shared the pros and cons objectively of each neighborhood. Joe was

also easy to contact. He was honest and transparent. Both he and his team made

12 StrongRelease Date – January 19, 2018Length – 2 hours, 10 minutesRated – R, due to the violence

Review – This is a story needing to be told. The movie is based upon the first Special Forces to be deployed in Afghanistan after 9/11. Their mission is to assist an Afghani warlord take control of a city, a stronghold, held by the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. The movie is very intense, fast-paced and enlightening. It focuses on the obstacles faced by the American soldiers to include the elements, the terrain, the cultural differences, the gamesmanship between different leaders and the unknown of an unconventional war. I highly recommend this movie.

The Black Panther is the King of a very advanced civilization. He is faced with weighty decisions that threaten his nation and the world. There a few twists that keep this movie entertaining. This one is worth watching.

PLAYING

From Waterlefe to Bay Isles and just about all High-end and N2 Neighborhoods in between Barb Mullett and her Neat n’ Tidy Team are cleaning homes the old-fashioned way. Their weekly cleaning could be compared to the competitions’ deep cleaning. Barb started cleaning homes when she was 16 and the family moved to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and warmth. Neat n’ Tidy cleaning is a growing compa-ny that started in 2010 and today has 10 teammates.

New customers always ask, “Will the same folks be cleaning my home?” This is an area of great concern for Barb -- the same team will always arrive as sched-uled and customers are notified in advance if a vaca-tion or illness changes a team. Their midwest work ethic sets them apart from most other companies and their customers appreciate their quiet, meticulous ap-proach to their work. They offer professional cleaning

for home and office and ensure that your space will shine! Neat n’ Tidy’s priority list system allows customers to let the team leaders know what’s most important each week -- their customers love this customization feature and enhances the whole space cleaning routine. Cleaned completely, cleaned professionally, cleaned without harsh chemicals and cleaned to customers’ satisfaction is why Neat n’ Tidy is consistently referred to others by neighbors.

Barb is thankful and grateful for her team of women who work tirelessly toward 100% customer satisfaction. Beyond their dedication to their work and profession-alism, she is grateful for their support during difficult and trying times. Barb has chronic lymphocytic leukemia and her family and her family of team members supported her through her treatments and ongoing battle. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that starts from cells that become certain white blood cells (called lymphocytes) in the bone marrow. The cancer (leukemia) cells start in the bone marrow but then go into the blood. In CLL, the leukemia cells often build up slowly over time, and many people don’t have any symptoms for at least a few years. In time, the cells can spread to other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver and spleen.1 The team managed, cared for and performed tirelessly to ensure that Neat n’ Tidy maintained customer satisfaction and not falter during her recent treatment program. Our team goes above and beyond for our customers and for our company -- for that, I am blessed and grateful.

WATERLEFE ARTIST GUILDChair: Patsy Hall

The 12th Annual Waterlefe Artists Guild Art Show and Sale occurred in November 2017. Money raised from the sale of raffle and door prize tickets benefitted the Arts programs at Freedom Elementary School and Haile Middle School. Waterlefe Gives Back!

Each month, the Waterlefe Artists Guild showcases the work of a Guild member on the foyer walls of the River Club lobby. Be sure to give yourself a little extra time to enjoy the incredible talents of your neighbors! The month of April features the work of Laura Bryg and Bob Cameron titled “The Tetons and Yellowstone.”

Laura Bryg and Bob Cameron are a husband and wife amateur photography team living in Waterlefe. They are serious nature photographers, special-izing in wildlife and landscapes. Both have won

numerous awards in national and local photography competitions and have had their images published.

“The Tetons and Yellowstone” is a collection of images taken during their re-cent trips in the fall of 2016 and 2017 to Wyoming. In 2016, they concentrated on images of large mammals, such as bison, moose, elk and pronghorn. In 2017, they concentrated on more of the iconic images of landscapes and waterfalls.

Bob and Laura have provided two of the images they plan to display at the Water-lefe River Club in April. “Teton Sunrise” is an image Bob took at sunrise as the first light washes over the mountains and makes them glow orange. Laura used one of her telephoto lenses for her wildlife shot to show the detail in the fur and facial features. Her wildlife image is simply called “Pronghorn Portrait.”

tCode Word “Blu Delish” - read on to find out more! The Blu Mangrove is steeped in local history and has more to offer than just a wonderful water-front restaurant. In addition to hand making just about everything that comes through the kitchen, it’s a great place to work and has staff that’s been there from 3 to 8 years, and you can tell they love what they do because you’re al-ways greeted with a smile and treated like family. The restaurant holds events and community gatherings from weddings to fashion shows to fundraising events for a local animal shelter. Live music fills the air every night enhancing the “Island Feel” to this beautiful waterfront location - arrive by land or by sea, you’ll be treated like royalty.

We were invited to a luncheon restaurant review on March 5 and treated to generous portions of:• Traditional Calamari Lightly breaded, deep fried & served with marinara and

sweet thai chili• Lobster Bisque or Creamy Clam Chowder• Mangrove Salad Local baby greens, cucumbers, red onion, tomatoes, candied

almonds, blue cheese crumbles, croutons, strawberries, raisins, tossed in red wine vinaigrette

• Grassy Key Grouper Award winning!!! Grouper topped with shrimp, sauteed spinach, garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus & a key lime beurre blanc

• Tuscan Chicken Chicken breast sauteed with green beans, sliced mush-rooms, spinach & sun-dried tomatoes topped with goat cheese and a key lime beurre blanc sauce over rice

For dessert a private bakery (Sugar Cubed Pastry Lab) brought select items for us to sample including: • Chocolate Ganache Cake• Creme Brulee• Lime, Coconut and Caramel French Macaroons• Key Lime Pie• Tiramisu

Our neighbors complete a review card as they dine and rate the dishes from one to five with a score of one as poor and five as excellent. The calamari received high grades from three to five and comments were “excellent” and “wonderfully light.” The Lobster Bisque was chosen by all except one Clam

Chowder and received a five across the board -- all soups are made from scratch at Blu Mangrove. Jenny, our server for the afternoon, told us that all the salad dressings are made in-house from scratch as well, and served on the side. The salad also re-ceived five’s by most with just one four. By the time the main courses arrived, all were feeling pretty full but enjoyed both the Grassy Key Grouper and Tuscan Chicken and those scores ranged from three and a half to five with the Tuscan Chicken winning the main course options with accolades “Wow,” and “true gem of a dish.” Dessert was just enough “sweet” to complete the meal.

Code word “ Blu Delish!” Write it down, put it in your phone and send yourself a reminder! When you visit the Blu Mangrove Restaurant at 102 Riv-iera Dunes Way, Palmetto, FL 34221 mention the code word Blu Delish and receive a free starter for your table. If you have a group of 10 or more your table will receive two free starters!

If you plan on taking the ride out to visit them, Jen-ny advises that it does get crazy busy between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (bring some patience) -- if you’d like to stay on island time a later dinner might be best. Reservations are recommended - 941 479-7827. The outside marina is gorgeous, the private dining area for events and groups is welcoming and the main restaurant is casual and inviting.

Thank you, Blu Mangrove for welcoming us, for the delicious food and for your warm family hospitality!

Spring Cleaning Spaces Create Happy Faces

In WaterlefeHeronsIf you live in Waterlefe, you are aware that we have a large HERON population here. The Heron that people seem to know best is the GREAT BLUE HERON that are presently nesting in our trees throughout the Community. The GREAT BLUE is large, weighing between 4.5 and 8 pounds. Their upper wings, back, and tail are grayish blue...their face is nearly white with a pair of black stripes running above their eyes to the back of their head. When they fly they can cruise at speeds of 20-30 mph. They spend 30% of their waking time stalking food in shallow waters of marshes and swamps. They eat fish, frogs and oth-er amphibians, small mammals, insects, rodents, and even other birds - usually they swallow their prey whole. They can hunt during both day and night, as they have specially-adapted eyes, which help them see in the dark. Parents bond during the nesting season, which in Waterlefe begins in December (later in some other parts of the country) although they are monog-amous during breeding season, they will choose a new partner the next year. The male chooses the nesting site and displays to attract a female, who lays 2-6 pale blue eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs for 25-29 days, and then feeding the young. Although the young can fly at about 60 days, they will still return to the nest to be fed by the adults for another few weeks. Their life span is about 15 years. They are extremely wary of humans. The TRI-COLORED HERON looks very much like the Great Blue, except it is much smaller (14.6 ounces for the male and about 11.8 ounces for the female). It has a long, slender neck and yellowish or grayish bill with a black top and a white belly. The Tri is very fun to watch as it often runs to snag its prey. The LITTLE BLUE HERON is small and dark with a slight body, slender neck, and long legs. Their head and neck are sort of purple-maroon while their body is a dark slate-blue. Their eyes are yellow and their legs are greenish. Juveniles are white. It is a stand-and-wait predator.

The GREEN HERON looks very different from those listed above. The Green Heron is short and stocky with relatively short legs. They are dark green on the back with a rich chestnut breast and neck and dark gray wings. When they fish, they stand motion-less by the water...sometimes they lure in fish using small items such as twigs or insects for bait.

NIGHT HERON: Although I hav-en’t witnessed any yellow-crowned Night Herons here, I have seen sev-

eral BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS. This small, rather squat heron is the most widespread heron in the world. They have thick necks, large flat heads, short legs, and heavy pointed bills. They are striking in their gray and black plumage with a long, white head plume. They often are concealed among foliage and branches, and forage in the evening/nighttime.

Spot Putting (best for Lag Putters)

Focusing on the Apex (where the putt begins to break, aka Fall Line) of the putt is the most important focus point for a Spot Putter.

Main focuses on Spot Putting: 1) Speed. The speed of the putt is ab-solutely crucial when spot putting. If your speed is off just the slightest bit

you will miss the putt. 2) Apex. Picking the apex of the putt is the difference in making the putt and missing it by a few inches. Make sure you always stay on the pro-side!!

Line Putting (best for Ram Putters):

When trying to keen in your line putting you must putt your focus on

an object past the hole. Looking at an object beyond the hole will ensure you choose the correct line and speed.

Main focus on Line Putting: Object Behind The Hole. Picking an object behind the hole is the most crucial part in line putting. If you do not get the ball on the correct line instantly, you will miss the putt every time!
