This shot will require a lofted club like your sand wedge or pitching wedge and the setup will be an open stance with 60% of your weight on your front foot. This means the face of the club will be aimed at the target, but your feet will be aimed well left of it. This will add a little more “bounce” on the club and prevent the toe from snagging in the turf. The ball should be in a neutral position which means in the middle of your stance. Nowtheconceptweenvisionisverysimilartothehardpanshot.Wecallthisthe“hingeandhold.”Thisisjustashortbackswingwithafirmlysetwrist, and then turns through the ball with your shoulders, butDONOTbreakyourwrist.Thebackswing must be short, but the follow through mustbelong. Here’swhy:Anyslowingoftheclubthrough impact results in a chunky shot that goes just a few feet in front of you. The short backswing and long follow-through makes it impossible to de-celerate the club. I think this is the most deflating shot to miss on the course. You envision a soft little pitch that will curl up close to the pin, but instead, youchunkit.Itcandestroyyourconfidence.Sotheway to prevent this is with the short backswing and a longer follow through. A well struck shot will leave a small divot. If you just brush the grass, you might blade the shot, so go ahead and take a small divot. (About the size of a 50 cent piece). This will require a descending blow. Don’t try to“help”theballup.Justlettheclubdoitsjob.
Finally, this shot is going to roll out a little more, so plan to land the ball about half way between your ball and the target. It will take a little practice, but a quality pitch is a thing of beauty. Your buddies will say “nice touch” or “great shot.” If executed proper-ly,itcanbeoneofthedefiningshotsofyourround.

If you close your eyes and say “Bowmaking”whatisyourfirstthought?Wasitthe pretty organza ribbon bows that adorn holiday or birthday packages? If you said yes, unfortunately youwouldnotbecorrect.Wasittheornamentalhair accessories or the archery/hunting equip-ment? Sadly, no, not those types of bows either.
The bows that Ray & Dianne make are string bows for stringed instruments. In fact, if you’re familiar with bow instruments you also know that rehairing a bow can be time consuming and costly. Enter Ray - he invented a bow that can be rehaired in minutes rather than hours and holds the patent for his bow. He continues to work out of his little shop behind the Sarasota airport and loves the fact that his invention has helped young musicians around the world. Sir Yehudi Mehuhen said, of Ray’s bows, “ he is delighted that there is a reliable manufacturer of inexpensive violin bows which will be invaluable to young students and beginners.”
Dianne continues to help Ray with the day to day running of the business, but don’t blink because if you do you’ll have to put on running shoes to keep up the her volunteer activities. She, like Frank Porpotage (last month’s family spotlight), also volunteers at the Ringling and has been doing so for the last 8 years. You’ll findherthereonMondaymorningsasaVolunteerAmbassadorgreeting visitors and advising them on the exciting museums. Additionally,forthelast6yearsshe’sworkedasaVolunteerAm-bassador at the information desk at the SRQ Airport. I love the ivy embellished arch at the entryway…it reminds me of my college days. Every type of plant in the yard has meaning. I took seeds from theoriginalplantsatourfirsthometoeachhomewe’velivedinalongthe way, so many really have a history.
Beyond the etched geometrically glassed front doors of 10615, I was pleasantly stunned by the beauty of the pool fountain, lake, and golf course view that gave me an immediate feeling of peace and tranquility. The mosaic listello tile on the floor that surround-ed us at the entry was an elegantly unexpected touch. I looked up and was again surprised and enchanted by the round, double stepped ceiling, crown molding and simple, but lovely chandelier. The same elegance greeted us in the formal dining room.
Welikedthegreatroomconcept, asitgaveusanimmediateviewfromthefrontdoorstothegreatoutdoorsbeyond.Thebenefitof the space it conserved gave way to a flex room, which we now enjoy as our “billiard room.” Similar homes use this room as a “parlor” or a fourth bedroom which would enjoy the shared use ofaJack-and-Jillbathwiththesecondbedroom.Welovethatfeature! But of course, we also love the fact that our third bath is a pool bathroom, strategically placed near the third bedroom, which I use as my real estate office. Reine’s office is on the other
side of the entry, close to the master bedroomsuite.Thebuilder,W.C.I.,would have called that room the den, but it’s a wonderful office area, complete with the same large wood paneled plantation shutters that we used in the dining room. The arches in there are a beautiful outdoor design feature as well.
Our master suite is quite large, and includes an entertainment niche sim-ilar to the one in the great room, with plenty of room for a seating or exer-cise area, and a doorway to the pool. The closets have lots of built-ins, and the master bath has a lovely Roman tub and separate shower. There are so many things to love in our home, it would be hard to think of replacing it. Its conveniences and advantages are so many, but our neighbors and the club we all enjoy are what’s priceless. We’resogladweliveinWaterlefe.Wejustloveithere!
