Savage notes that coordination with Nobiskrug was critical to the success of Ecstasea’s repaint, and represents a huge team effort involving the shipyard and applicators, as well as the yacht’s crew and management. A Pinmar paint shoot of this magnitude can typically consist of 12-16 applicators, each with a dedicated line handler, and at least one project manager responsible for supervising each side of the yacht. The group prefers this approach of covering large areas in a shorter period, rather than breaking it down into smaller segments that would require more painting sessions. Picture three to four months of exhaustive preparation culminating in a few carefully orchestrated paint shoots lasting between six to ten hours. An army of applicators and support people swarm the inside of the temporary containment that surrounds the

massive superyacht, completely refinishing the exterior hull and superstructure.

Once completed in Spring 2016, Ecstasea emerged from her tent and re-entered the water more beautiful than ever; much to the delight of the complex network of companies and personnel involved in the refit. Managed by the expertise of Lennard Leeflang, Technical Director of Y.CO, M/Y Ecstasea’s owners and crew are reportedly very happy with the end results, and he notes that ALEXSEAL lived up to the very high expectations of everyone involved in the refit. To quote Savage, “We’re very happy with ALEXSEAL. Happy end user, happy shipyard, happy applicators.”

Drenched in a rich heritage, Contest Yachts quickly built a strong reputation for themselves and have maintained that momentum throughout the last 55 years of family ownership. From co-developing the wing keel for America’s Cup sailing yachts in 1979, to winning the prestigious European Yacht of the Year award in 2014, Contest is no stranger to innovation and accolades.

Award-winning and ground-breaking yachts deserve the absolute best in finishes to bring out their impressive lines while tailoring to the owner’s desires of

cruising, short-handing or racing. Contest Yachts has shown preference for the complete ALEXSEAL system when it comes to fairing, priming and finishing their strong, but lightweight yachts. Contest’s Foreman of Exterior Paint, Colin Mason has praised ALEXSEAL product performance and technical support. Not only has his team been able to achieve beautiful finishes with ALEXSEAL, but the coatings system has provided Contest owners with great peace of mind for longevity and wear-resistance.

Recently, to great acclaim and praise, Contest Yachts has broken out into the motoryacht segment with their 52MC, a stylish and low-slung cruiser. Each build of the new 52 foot (16m) motoryacht from Contest is likely to be glimmering in ALEXSEAL metallic or solid finishes, and we can’t wait to see the results!

Contest Yachts Builds on a History of Excellence

As one of ALEXSEAL’s first European distributors, Verf van der Feer proudly provides excellent products, equipment and support expertise to the region’s storied and innovative ship building industry. Despite this territory’s relatively small size, it boasts one of the world’s most prolific boat building communities–steeped in history, heritage and skill. With a strikingly similar history to Mankiewicz, Verf van der Feer has been providing coatings solutions for the professional market for over 120 years, also under the guidance of family ownership.

Headquartered in Sneek, Verf van der Feer is well positioned to provide solutions to many master ship builders. “We are committed to local support and rapid distribution from our six locations,” says Pier de Jager of Verf van der Feer. Working closely with ALEXSEAL Sales Manager Marcel Voskamp for over a decade now, Verf van der Feer has helped coat or recoat boats from some the most notable Dutch names, such as Feadship, Heesen, Vitters, Royal Huisman, Contest, Serious, Steeler, Nordic, and many more. Mankiewicz’s supply line from nearby Hamburg, and the expert support from Voskamp has truly proven to be a successful partnership.

For example, ALEXSEAL has developed an epoxy primer and filler system that seals the substrate surface to be painted over and that achieves exceptional longevity, often lasting decades. So when you paint your boat with the ALEXSEAL system, you have a superb underlying foundation. If you or the next owner want to change the color or refresh the system, you just have to apply new material on top, you will not have to remove the entire system.

Collaboration is key when it comes to developing ground-breaking custom yachts and that is readily evident in the 62’ Tripp sailing yacht recently designed and constructed for Chessie Racing. Aside from the actual construction team, there are naval architects, exterior and interior designers, rigging specialists, coatings applicators and many more specialized roles that come together on a single build to help to make it extraordinary. The Rhode Island, U.S.A. based New England Boatworks has become recognized throughout the world as an authority on racing yacht construction, most recently delivering the composite-rich and ALEXSEAL-coated Rambler 88 super maxi which has gone on to challenge and win several highly competitive open ocean races.

New England Boatworks Owner/Partner David MacBain commented, “We don’t spend money on national advertising campaigns; the success of our business has come from satisfied customers spreading the word and we’ve always made it a practice to exceed our client’s expectations.” When renowned naval architect firm Tripp Design, of Norwalk, Connecticut was approached by the owner of Chessie Racing to design a 62’ racing sloop, they didn’t have to look far from home to decide who could build it. New England Boatworks has more than proven their expertise in building cutting-edge sailing yachts and were the perfect choice to construct this café racer, in what would primarily be carbon fiber and Nomex composites.

Likewise, when it came time to select a coatings system, the firms went with what–and who–they knew nearby: ALEXSEAL has the highest quality marine coatings system, and Northeast U.S. Sales Manager Alastair Smith could expertly support it. NEB Service Manager Scott Murray and his application team reflected on their positive experience applying ALEXSEAL’s metallic system across the entire hull and many carbon fiber parts of Rambler 88, and were confident and excited to replicate those excellent results on the Chessie Racing project.

Fast forward to the splash date, and this gorgeous 62 foot (19m) sailing yacht exudes speed even when she is standing still, thanks to her amazingly clean lines, minimal cabin top and the fantastic dragon serpent graphics that run the length of the hull. ALEXSEAL metallic Dolphine Blue beautifully complements both the tan non-skid surfaces across the deck as well as her darker, Lagoon Blue hull. New England Boatworks always goes above and beyond for each and every customer–whether a refit, repair or new build–and the exceptionally beautiful and highly performing results they’ve achieved are a testament to the superior quality that ALEXSEAL consistently provides.

Westport’s Design Evolution Advances with ALEXSEAL®

Westport Yachts got their start in 1964 in the Pacific Northwest of the United States building commercial fishing vessels and ferries for nearly 25 years before designing and building the luxurious motoryachts that they are so well-known for today. The superior fit and finish, superyacht-grade interiors, and renowned craftsmanship of Westport Yachts have helped set them apart in the industry. The impressive strength of their hulls can be attributed to their all-composite construction and the many modern construction techniques they have pioneered.

Westport’s commitment to the superior quality and finish of every yacht has included the exclusive use of the complete ALEXSEAL system, from fairings and primers to the illustrious topcoat, for several years now. Westport Yachts President Daryl Wakefield explained, “The first boat that we painted with ALEXSEAL was one that we were sending over to the Middle East. We knew that the environment

was real harsh, and we weren’t confident that any of the products we were using at the time would stand up to it. So we stepped up to using ALEXSEAL and it has turned out great.”

Westport’s newest model to splash, the 125, nicely complements their lineup of yachts measuring up to 164’ (50m), but also represents an impressive leap into the future for the

company’s exterior styling and design. The high contrast, black and white color scheme perfectly punctuates the sharp and sweeping lines of this fresh new look. It is exciting for ALEXSEAL to play such an important role, not only in helping to beautify Westport’s latest designs, but also in streamlining their production processes to provide additional operational efficiency, both now and into the future.

Cheoy Lee Continues Their Run of ExcellenceWith over 145 years of experience building ships of all types for commercial and recreational customers, very few builders have the pedigree of Cheoy Lee Shipyards. The latest yacht to debut from these esteemed builders is a 104’ pilothouse from their Global series. ALEXSEAL’s Jeff Holland has worked closely with the company’s ownership for decades, providing solutions for the multitude of craft they construct.

Sea Tow’s San Diego, California operation is responsible for the safe recovery and salvage of stranded vessels along with mariner services including re-fueling and jump starts. They manage a large area

stretching from Newport Beach, California, USA south to the waters of coastal Mexico with a fleet of six boats.

Recently, Sea Tow San Diego purchased a SAFE Boat Defender 250 from the United States Coast Guard which needed some fresh paint. Unfortunately, within just a few weeks of receiving a professionally applied paint job, the material began cracking and falling off of the boat. A suggested solution was to simply touch up the paint, but this also yielded poor results. Frustrated owner and lead Captain, Jared Stubbs turned to ALEXSEAL’s Western U.S. Sales Manager, Alex Sandas for help. “He was extremely helpful. He even set us up with a painter to complete the job,” Stubbs recalls. Joe Connors of Marina Shipyard in Long Beach, California prepped and painted the boat in Sea Tow’s distinctive yellow and black color scheme.

The Defender 250 stands out in the crowd with her bright yellow rib collar, and after a year of extremely hard use as a towing and salvage vessel, there are no cracks or chipping to be found. Stubbs explains that this all-aluminum boat is responsible for hip-towing vessels of 40 to 100 feet (13m to 32m) in length and frequently responds to Sea Tow members by travelling at over 50 knots (92 kph) in large seas. “This is the toughest paint I have seen, bar none. I highly recommend ALEXSEAL products.” Stubbs concludes. Putting their boats through extreme conditions is a frequent occurrence for Sea Tow San Diego, and ALEXSEAL is happy to provide a coatings solution that has proven capable of keeping up with those pressures.

ALEXSEAL is excited to have recently released a new online video series which offers great insight into how our superior products, experience and support provide comprehensive solutions for all of our customers. These videos are anchored by representatives from ALEXSEAL, but primarily showcase what matters most to us—our customers. Participants from a variety of international yacht construction and service operations offer first-hand testimonials and help communicate how ALEXSEAL excels at providing solutions to their unique needs. Executives from Westport Yachts, Cheoy Lee Shipyards, and many more industry leaders describe their long-standing relationships with ALEXSEAL and their positive experiences with our products and support.

These first two pieces will also serve as an introduction to the next video endeavors currently in production, aimed at answering frequently asked technical questions. The next segment to roll out in the video series will detail everything from the new construction and repair paint processes to priming and fairing various substrates. Whether you are an industry veteran or DIY enthusiast, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to find, enjoy and share our new videos which can be found on our Facebook page, YouTube channel, and on our web site at www.alexseal.com.

Introducing Blending Solvent

Mankiewicz is proud to announce the addition of our new ALEXSEAL Blending Solvent which helps create repairs that are less noticeable and visible to the human eye. This new Blending Solvent (A5033) follows the introduction of Fast Spot Primer 414 which allows customers to prime and repair areas more quickly and efficiently than ever before. ALEXSEAL Blending Solvent is designed to help “melt” the edges of a repair area into the existing finish and to minimize any difference in the final appearance, often referred to as “halos” in the coatings industry.

With this latest addit ion to ALEXSEAL’s system of coating products, owners and captains can feel more confident than ever that if an unavoidable mishap occurs, their ALEXSEAL finish can be repaired with greater ease and superior results.

Mankiewicz Coatings is making a multi-million dollar investment to expand their United States presence by moving to a new 90,000 ft2 (8,361 m2) facility situated on 10 acres (4 hectares) of land, located just one mile from their current facility. The completed site will provide for a new research and development lab and increased logistical operations. The official ground breaking ceremony occurred in November of 2015 and construction and

development have been in full-swing since. The impressive capacity of this new facility will help lessen the dependence on incoming ocean transports and translate directly to a better North American customer experience by having the products on-hand

and ready for shipment from Charleston, South Carolina. In addition, the site provides for future expansion of production capacity and offers space for a training center for coatings system applicators and Mankiewicz personnel.

Ocean Marine Yacht Center was founded in 1989 and has since evolved into a full service state-of-the-art yacht repair facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, U.S.A. Their dedicated superyacht repair facility has grown to one of the largest facilities on the East Coast, boasting a 1,250 long ton (1,270 metric ton) Syncrolift capable of hauling yachts up to 240’ (73 m). Vessels are seamlessly transported via rail system to their climate controlled indoor repair facility, which can simultaneously house multiple superyachts.

There they have painted over 50 large yachts with ALEXSEAL over the last decade, including superyachts from builders such as Feadship, Lurssen, Abeking & Rasmussen, Trinity, Delta, Burger and more. Over this time, Ocean Marine’s CEO Jim Bento has enjoyed a close professional relationship with ALEXSEAL manager Tripp Nelson, and

explains that Nelson can always be counted on to back-up the product and provide personal technical support. “In addition to the support and quality of the products, the paint team at Ocean Marine enjoys the way the paint comes out of the gun and lays out on the surface.” Bento adds, “It is important to us that the paint team have confidence in the paint environment, equipment, and most of all, the final outcome of the paint surface. We find ALEXSEAL to be of the highest quality. It provides a consistent, predictable yacht-quality finish.”

The company is presently servicing M/Y Freedom, a 151’ yacht built by Northern Marine, which will undergo a full prime and paint job in their spray booth. Given their impressive capabilities and track record, we’re confident the results will be astonishing as M/Y Freedom rolls back down the Ocean Marine railway!

Fraser Fibreglass is a full-service shipyard in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada providing all types of yacht repairs and restorations. Founded by Philip & Amanda O’Donoghue in 1980, Fraser Fibreglass is proficient with high performance polyester urethanes and have applied these types of coatings to yachts, skytrains, aircraft and even architectural structures. After being introduced to ALEXSEAL by Sales Manager Alex Sandas, Philip tells us the products have given them great success including on his own personal boat.

“ One of the major advantages is that ALEXSEAL is an incredibly hard coating, yet it is still repairable. Many other polyester urethanes cannot be repaired to the yacht standard with a high gloss finish.”
