A Special Supplement to the Austin Daily Herald Sunday, August 8, 2010 By Josh Moniz Summer fun will kick off this Tuesday at noon with opening ceremonies of the 126th Mower County Free Fair. This year’s fair will emphasize making the fair more accessible and fun for teenagers. “Usually you go to most fairs and you see the teens just strolling around, looking for something to do. We’re trying to offer more events geared towards them, like the Guitar Hero contest on Friday,” said John Mueller, president of the fair board and Austin police lieutenant. The Guitar Hero contest goes from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at Fair Square. Additionally, teen dances are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at the Fair Square. The fair is also emphasizing free or low cost entertainment in theme with this year’s slogan “Affordable Fun for Everyone.” The majority of the events are free, except for the Grandstand events and the rides at the carnival. However, both the Grandstand and the carnival have discount offers available throughout the week. Grandstand events cost $10 a seat, with children under 5 able to get in for free. This year, the Grand Pass is being offered, which is $36 for six Grandstand event tickets that can be used at any Grandstand events. The Grand Pass is available for purchase at Godfather’s Pizza. Similarly, the carnival is offering Bracelets Days throughout the length of the fair. The bracelets cost $15 and can be used like unlimited carnival tickets during the specified time of the Bracelet Days. Tuesday will be Teen Night with the bracelets available to teenagers to be used from 8 p.m. to midnight. Wednesday is Kid’s Day and the bracelets can be used from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the bracelets are available to everyone. The Saturday hours of use of 1 to 5 p.m. and the Sunday hours are 2 to 8 p.m. This year there are several new events available for fair goers to attend, as well as additions to returning events. The first new event is the cowboy mounted Shoot-out, which takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Horse Arena. The event involves cowboys racing past balloon targets and target shooting them with percussion rounds. Precession rounds are not live ammunition. The second event is the steer wrestling Jackpot on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Horse Arena. Participants ride alongside steers on their horses before jumping to the steer and wrestling it to the ground. Another new addition to the fair is the showing of a Blackhawk helicopter during the vehicle fair, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fair Square. Sippin’ the fair’s finestBy Rachel Drewelow

Sasparilla. Orange Cream. BlackCherry. Those are just a few of the old

fashioned sodas that will be peddled forthe first time at the Mower County Fairthis year at Doc’s Smooth Sippin’Saloon. The brand new booth is owned and

operated by Mitch Holderbach, ofStillwater, who serves up the 100-year-oldrecipes with an entrepreneurial spirit.“It’s been really successful so far, and

I’m developing a following,” Holderbachsaid while working at the FreebornCounty Fair earlier this week.Holderbach said he’s always wanted

to start his own business, and he got theopportunity about a year ago when theeconomy took a toll on his sales andmarketing career.Holderbach doesn’t make the sodas

himself, but purchases the syrups from avintage soda company. In addition to theflavors mentioned above, Doc’s SmoothSippin’ Saloon serves root beer, diet rootbeer, and cream soda — all in 32-ouncestainless steel collector’s mugs.

Those who purchase a mug for $6 canbring it back to the saloon at any fairand have it refilled for $3.“We’ve already seen some repeat

customers going from fair to fair,”Holderbach said. “It’s really gainingmomentum.”Customers, Holderbach said, often

voice their appreciation for the style ofthe saloon — complete with old-fashioned swinging saloon doors and anoak whiskey barrel tap.Holderbach said he’s enjoyed working

the southern Minnesotan county faircircuit.“I enoy the people and being out and

about, and it sure helps that thereception’s been great.”

For as long as Tyler Amick canremember, he’s been a 4-H kid.His experience began in the

Cloverbud scene as a kindergartenstudent, when he’d spend his timetagging along with his mother, a 4-Hleader. As a third grade student, hetransitioned into the 4-H program, taking on projects ranging fromengineering and science to horsetraining. Now a 14-year-old entering ninth

grade, Amick has established himselfas a standout in the Austin 4-H scene.“This past year, Tyler has really

stepped up in his leadership,” saidregional 4-H program coordinatorMelissa Koch. “He’s not afraid to takeon challenges, come up with good ideasand give them a try.”Amick currently serves as the vice-

president of his 4-H club, Enterprise. He’s also a member of 4-HAmbassadors, a leadership and serviceprogram.“Being a part of the advisory board

and ambassador team, he has reallycontributed to making 4-H successful in

Mower County,” Koch said. For the past two years, Amick’s

success has taken him to state faircompetitions — the ultimate goal formany 4-H’ers.Amick admits that his involvement

in 4-H takes up a great deal of his time, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.“First of all, my mom is the leader.

Second of all, I have a bunch of fun — 4-H is just fun in general,” Amick said.Amick’s regular projects include

geology, photography, woodworking andanimal-related categories, including the

showing of chickens and rabbits. With a multitude of projects on his

mind, Amick said his involvement hasbecome a year-round affair.“I’m pretty much busy all the time,”

he said.Through his experiences, he’s seen

hard work transfer into success andhe’s learned what it means to dedicatehimself to the task at hand. He’s alsobeen encouraged by the opportunities toserve the community.“In 4-H, you learn a bunch about

working for the community, through

community service and stuff like that,”Amick said.As a leader in the county, Amick also

has the chance to introduce youngpeople to the world of 4-H — and inspirethem along the way.In a recent visit with a group of

Cloverbuds, Amick was pleased towitness their excitement.“They were really into 4-H,” Amick

said of the young group. “One kid wasinto geology. He said he took me as hisrole model for it. It’s good to see littlekids like that doing what they do in 4-H.”

Bang! Smash! Pow!No, you’re not reading an old comic

book. Those are in fact some of thesounds of one of the Mower CountyFair’s most popular series of events —demolition derbies. At the 2010 Mower County Fair —

which runs Aug. 10 to Aug. 15 — therewill be three separate demolitionderbies, each guaranteed to provide

plenty of chaos and destruction. The first derby, set for Wednesday

night at the Grandstand, will involvemid-size and compact cars. Later inthe week, the bigger bruisers come outto play, as Saturday will feature thecombine demolition derby and Sundaywill bring trucks together for asmashing good time.John Mueller, the fair board’s

president, said all of the events tend todraw big crowds.

“We have found, year after year, thatdemo derbies are probably the mostpopular events,” he said. And why do so many people turn

out on derby night? Simple, Muellersaid: “A lot of it is just the hitting andsmashing and the roar of the engine.”He added: “They give fans a pretty

good show.”And just because this year’s fair

will only have the three derbies, don’tthink that Mueller and crew haven’tthought of — and done — events witha host of other vehicles.A few years ago, this meant a school

bus derby that attracted roughly 1,800fans. Looking forward, Mueller saidthere a few new possibilities.“We’ve talked about everything

from skid loaders to semis,” he said. For now, fans will have to enjoy

compact cars, sedans, combines andtrucks, all of which should put onquite the shows. And as an addedincentive to go watch vehicles smasheach other to bits, there will be bikegiveaways — and a toy tractorgiveaway during the combine derby —every night.

Each derby will cost $10 to attend, with those 5 and under admitted forfree. However, Mueller said fair — andderby — fanatics may want to invest inthe Grand Pass. New this year, GrandPasses are good for six Grandstandevents, but only cost $36.
