In May 2014, the 67th Festival de Cannes will take place in France, where a selection of best films from around the world, leading actors and well-known directors will be in competition.

Around the same dates and to echo the Festival de Cannes, the Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur and the Embassy of France in Malaysia welcome you to discover the French artistic expressions presented during the French Art and Film Festival. In this edition, you will be able to enjoy twelve feature films which are mostly past years releases from the French cinema that have never been screened in Malaysia. In the line-up of events, there will be a hip-hop performance by the popular Pockemon Crew, a classical concert under the direction of a leading Chief Conductor, contemporary music concerts, an exhibition of beautiful photos of Festivals de Cannes and a selection of specialties in the scope of the French fine cuisine month.

Once again this year, France is pleased to share with the Malaysian public and those visiting Kuala Lumpur and Penang, some facets of its cultural richness.

I would like to thank the local authorities, our sponsors and the organizers who have very graciously contributed every year to the success of French arts in Malaysia.

En mai 2014, se déroulera en France le 67ème Festival de Cannes où sera présentée en compétition une sélection des meilleurs films mondiaux, des plus grands acteurs et des meilleurs metteurs en scène.

Aux mêmes dates, et en écho au Festival de Cannes, l’Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur et l’Ambassade de France vous convient à venir découvrir les productions artistiques françaises présentées dans le cadre du Festival du Film et des Arts français (FAFF). A cette occasion, vous pourrez apprécier une douzaine de longs métrages pour la plupart produits ces dernières années et inédits en Malaisie ; mais aussi un spectacle de hip-hop par le célèbre Pockemon Crew, un concert classique sous la conduite de l’un des meilleurs chefs d’orchestre actuels et des concerts de musique contemporaine, une exposition des plus belles photos des Festivals de Cannes et une sélection de spécialités dans le cadre du mois de la haute cuisine française.

Je me réjouis que cette année encore, la France puisse partager avec le public malaisien et étranger de Kuala Lumpur et de Penang quelques facettes de sa grande richesse culturelle.

Je tiens à remercier les autorités malaisiennes, les sponsors et les organisateurs qui chaque année se mobilisent pour ouvrir cette belle et grande fenêtre sur l’art français.

I am proud to announce that Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur is back with the 13th edition of the ever-growing popular French Art and Film Festival 2014, celebrating the best in cinema, music, dance, art and gastronomy.

As one of the leading film festivals in Malaysia, this year’s French Art and Film Festival will showcase a great selection of 12 films for all ages; including one of my favourite recent French films by best-selling author David Foenkinos, Delicacy, starring internationally renowned actress Audrey Tautou.

In addition, we have classical guitarist Gabriel Bianco performing, and hip-hop, dynamic street dance performance by the award-winning Pockemon Crew which will get everyone energized!

We also have a photography exhibition by Clotilde Richalet who has been photographing the Cannes Film Festival with portraits of the celebrities; and last but not least, the annual Marché de France with French products and specialties available; and a French Champagne and Cognac Tasting event.

It is therefore with immense pleasure and pride to present this year’s 2014 French Art and Film Festival, and I wish you a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting festival!

L’Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur est heureuse d’inaugurer la nouvelle édition 2014 du French Art and Film Festival, qui célèbre avec succès le meilleur du cinéma, de la musique, de la danse, de la photographie, du théâtre et de la gastronomie française.

Devenu l’un des festivals de films les plus populaires de Malaisie, le FAFF propose une vaste sélection de 12 films, dont l’un de mes préférés, La Délicatesse, écrit et réalisé par l’écrivain à succès David Foenkinos, avec Audrey Tautou.

Nous avons la joie d’accueillir le guitariste Gabriel Bianco et la compagnie de danse Hip-Hop Pockemon Crew, dont l’énergie et l’originalité vous surprendront !

La photographe Clotilde Richalet présente ses portraits d’acteurs célèbres dans une exposition consacrée au Festival de Cannes. Enfin pour les gastronomes, le Marché Français offre une large sélection des meilleurs produits du terroir, ainsi qu’une soirée dégustation de champagne et de cognac.

Now in its 13th edition, the French Art and Film Festival is a highly anticipated annual event in the Malaysian cultural agenda. A privileged platform of expression for French arts and a momentum for cultural exchanges, the Festival showcases various artistic fields encompassing cinema, music, dance, gastronomy, visual arts, theatre – each of them featuring both emerging and renowned artists.

This eclectic programme has allowed the festival to gather a wide audience: about 8,000 people have attended the FAFF events in 2013.

Organised by Alliance Francaise de Kuala Lumpur and the Embassy of France in Malaysia, the festival can rely on a great network of partners in Malaysia. Whether they be sponsors, institutions, volunteers or patrons, their support is key in bringing the event to life.

Aujourd’hui dans sa treizième édition, le French Art & Film Festival est devenu un rendez-vous annuel attendu dans l’agenda culturel malaisien. Plateforme d’expression privilégiée des arts français et moment fort de la coopération culturelle, le festival se dote d’une programmation artistique variée qui embrasse cinéma, musique, danse, gastronomie et arts plastiques, mettant en lumière à la fois des artistes reconnus et émergents.

An annual anticipated rendez-vous with French cinema!Discover the best of French films through 8 recent successful release, 2 musicals, a documentary and a classic French animated feature film. There is something for everyone: comedy, drama, thriller, humour and a surrealism feature.

Among the highlights this year, Mood Indigo gathers two French superstars: Audrey Tautou (Amélie) and Romain Duris. Michel Gondry is returning to French cinema. The Past, starring Bérénice Bejo (known for her role in Academy Award winning film The Artist) met with popular and critical acclaim and was presented as part of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. Three romance features where love happens when you least expect it – Fly me to the moon; Love is in the air and Delicacy - take you on a journey from the Kilimanjaro and New York to the streets of Paris. Catch the cheerful comedies of a granny’s disorganised funeral; a woman sent back to her teenage years; or characters wandering in a singing mood.

This year the French Film Festival doesn’t just remain at the movies theatres, you can see the Cannes Film Festival photo exhibition by Clotilde Richalet and enjoy the energetic hip hop performance by French street dance crew Pockemon Crew as they explore silent cinema in “And, action!”.

This is the surreal and poetic story of Colin, an idealistic and inventive young man, who meets Chloé, a young woman who seems to be the incarnation of a blues by Duke Ellington. Residing at the Jardin des Plantes zoo in Paris since 1972, she now has more years of service there than any staff member. A real star in the zoo, she sees hundreds of visitors walking by her cage every day. Each of them with their own comments…

Née en 1969 dans les forêts de Bornéo, Nénette vient d’avoir 40 ans. Il est très rare qu’un orang-outan atteigne cet âge-là ! Pensionnaire à la ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes - à Paris - depuis 1972, elle y a aujourd’hui plus d’ancienneté que n’importe quel membre du personnel. Vedette incontestée des lieux, elle voit, chaque jour, des centaines de visiteurs défiler devant sa cage. Naturellement, chacun y va de son petit commentaire...

After four years in Iran, Ahmad, an Iranian man, returns to France to meet his wife Marie and her daughters from a previous marriage in order to finalize their divorce procedure. Marie is now involved in a relationship with Samir, who has a son and whose wife is in a coma. The relationship of the older daughter, Lucie, and Marie is strained because Lucie disapproves of her mother’s relationship with Samir. Everyone seems to carry the weight of a heavy secret.

This film has won dozens of awards worldwide, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, in addition to Farhadi being nominated for best original screenplay. Farhadi’s film also came roaring out of the gate at Cannes this year where it won two awards.

Ahmad regagne la France après quatre ans d’absence pour finaliser sa procédure de divorce et retrouve sa femme Marie et ses filles d’un précédent mariage. Elle vit désormais en couple avec Samir, qui a un fils et dont la femme est plongée dans le coma. La relation entre la fille aînée, Lucie, et sa mère Marie est tendue car Lucie désapprouve la relation de sa mere avec Samir. Tous semblent porter le poids d’un lourd secret.

Le film a remporté des dizaines de prix internationaux parmi lesquels l’Oscar du Meilleur Film en langue étrangère et une nomination pour le meilleur scénario original. Le passé a également remporté deux prix à Cannes en 2013.

Granny’s Funeral was nominated at the French 2013 Césars Awards for Best Original Screenplay.

Granny Berthe is dead. Armand had somehow forgotten about his granny… He works as a pharmacist with his wife Hélène. In a drawer meant for drugs, he hides his magician accessories because he is secretly preparing a trick for his mistress’ daughter Alix’s birthday. What about Granny in all this? A ludicrous comedy that arouses thoughts on loss and family.

This exhibition aims to take you on a journey through one of the largest film festivals in the world that is known for its independent and artistic film selections, the Cannes Film Festival. Feel the excitement and the glamour that reigns on the famous red carpet, as you experience the Cannes Film Festival through these images.

About the exhibitionCannes and its Croisette, the red carpet and its glitter, its beach and starlets have appealed to all movie lovers since the 1950’s. Photographer for the Cannes Film Festival since 2005, Clotilde takes a less conventional way of approaching the event, choosing black and white images for the timeless feeling that the festival deserves and expressing a desire not to focus on close-ups but on wide angle shots to try and capture the atmosphere of the festival and the red carpet. Much of the folklore of Cannes is the mix of journalists and photographers; the cheerful and enthusiastic audience; the interviews, and many other details that make Cannes unique.

About the artistWhilst studying journalism, Clotilde Richalet realizes that she can tell stories through another preferred medium – photography - and decides to follow an art history degree. A first internship at Cannes Film Festival leads her to specialize in movie-sets photography and portraits of actors. Besides cinema, Clotilde Richalet works for various magazines and teaches photography. Clotilde is now head of the photo desk in Cannes Film Festival.

Cette exposition a pour but de vous faire voyager dans l’ambiance de l’un des plus grands festivals de cinéma du monde. Réputé pour son cinéma indépendant et ses sélections pointues parfois déroutantes, Cannes fascine. Des photos qui transmettent la pression, l’excitation et le glamour qui règne sur ce fameux tapis rouge, pendant les quelques secondes où les artistes le traversent. Traversez-le vous aussi, transporté par ses images.

A propos de l’expositionCannes et sa Croisette, son tapis rouge et ses paillettes, sa plage et ses starlettes, font rêver tous les cinéphiles depuis les années 1950. Photographe pour le Festival depuis 2005, Clotilde Richalet a opté pour une approche moins conventionnelle que d’ordinaire de cette manifestation, d’abord en choisissant le noir et blanc pour le côté intemporel que le Festival mérite mais aussi en privilégiant les plans d’ensemble pour essayer de capter l’ambiance du festival ou d’une montée des marches. Une grande partie du folklore de Cannes est son parterre de journalistes et photographes, son public enjoué et fasciné, son protocole exigeant mais toujours déjoué.

A propos de l’artisteAlors étudiante en journalisme, Clotilde Richalet découvre un jour la photographie comme un autre moyen privilégié de raconter des histoires. Elle suit ainsi un cursus d’histoire de l’art et de photographie. C’est un premier stage au Festival de Cannes qui la convainc de se spécialiser dans la photo de tournage et dans les portraits d’acteurs. Clotilde Richalet travaille également pour des magazines et enseigne la photographie. Clotilde Richalet est aujourd’hui en charge du service photo à Cannes.

Crowned winner of the International Competition of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), Bianco takes us on a journey through the most original and significant pieces of classical guitar, an instrument rich with colours and varied tones. Be it a seasoned music-lover or a novice music-appreciator, the audience will dive into a performance filled with virtuosity and sensibility.

About the recitalFrom baroque with Johann Sebastian Bach to Spanish music with Joaquin Turina, melted with popular inspiration with Agustin Barrios and romanticism with Niccolo Paganini, the programme of the recital evokes a wide range of places, styles and musical ambiences.

About Gabriel BiancoGabriel Bianco received an early start with the guitar at the age of 5 and has followed a flawless path since. He receives the highest rank in the admission competition to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) and four years later, obtains the 1st prize with unanimous support and congratulations from the jury. His high rankings in international competitions have allowed him to perform recitals all over the world. Alongside his solo career, Gabriel founded the guitar quartet “Eclisses” with a CD released last year.

A seulement 25 ans, Gabriel Bianco est déjà considéré comme l’un des guitaristes les plus brillants de sa génération. Vainqueur du premier prix du Concours International de la Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), Bianco propose un voyage musical au travers d’oeuvres significatives originales pour guitare classique, un instrument aux riches couleurs et aux timbres variés. L’auditeur, qu’il soit mélomane ou non-averti, plonge dans une performance qui allie virtuosité, sensibilité et raffinement artistique.

World hip-hop dance champions Pockemon Crew visit Malaysia for the first time to present their latest production, “And… Action!” for FAFF’s film festival. Originally from Lyon – the city that has a significant role in the history of cinema – the dancers take us back to film sets of the 1930s and 1940s for an original piece of a new hip-hop generation, cinema and musical combining both style, costumes themes and music of the two eras. The performance will be accompanied by a dance battle with a prominent local hip-hop group.

About “And… Action!”Inspired by American movies and musicals from the 1930s and 1940s, the latest creation from the company is a tribute to cinema and pays homage to the dance performed in Broadway theatres at the time, which influenced hip hop at its early stage. Full of energy and acrobatics, this vivacious piece with 6 dancers mixes genres and styles for a unique choreographic experience.

About Pockemon CrewThe group Pockemon Crew was created in 1999 and began amassing a series of victories in international battles, including the prestigious International Battle of the Year (Hanover, Germany) in 2013, which brought them worldwide recognition and enabled them to collaborate with the National Opera of Lyon as an associate company. Their fame skyrocketed when they became the first French group to make a serious impression in Korea during the KB BBOY Masters in Seoul (2007), making them the most successful crew in the world. Under the artistic direction of Riyad Fghani, founder of the company, the artists explore other universes with contemporary and classical dancers, circus performers, mime artists and actors so as to develop different working methods and create original pieces.

Les champions internationaux de hip-hop Pockemon Crew se renden pour la première fois en Malaisie pour présenter leur tout dernier spectacle, “Silence, on tourne !”, un écho au festival du film. Originaires de Lyon, la ville Lumière qui a donné naissance au cinéma, les danseurs nous transportent sur les tournages des films des années 1930-1940 au cours de cette performance spectaculaire qui mêle hip hop, cinéma et comédie musicale. La représentation sera accompagnée d’une courte performance par un groupe de hip hop local.

A propos du spectacleInspiré par les films américains et les comédies musicales des années 1930-1940, cette création est un hommage vibrant au cinéma et aux danses des theâtres de Broadway qui ont influencé les premiers mouvements hip hop. Pleine d’énergie et d’acrobatie, cette pièce enjouée à six danseurs mêle les genres et les styles dans une expérience chorégraphique unique.

For this second edition on Jalan Mesui, the venues in the street join efforts to offer gigs by local bands for free. Get the chance to discover local talents and listen to your favourite KL artists altogether. Hop in and out to listen to pop, reggae, folk music and more whilst enjoying a drink and the warm atmosphere of Jalan Mesui.

HELP College of Arts & Technology

HELP Education Group has been organising the Fête de la Musique celebration since 2002. The event is largely spontaneous in nature, open to amateur and professional musicians regardless of background, style and experience. Many concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public for free as all performers donate their time.

About Fête de la MusiqueFête de la Musique was created in France in 1982 and has since spread worldwide to be now presented in more than 100 countries on 5 continents. The event is organised every year on 21 June - summer solstice – and aims at gathering both professional and amateur singers and musicians while allowing all music genres to coexist and work together under the same hat.

Pour cette deuxième édition de la Fête de la Musique organisée par l’Alliance Française à Jalan Mesui, les établissements se réunissent à nouveau pour offrir des concerts gratuits par des artistes locaux. C’est l’occasion de découvrir des talents et d’écouter vos artistes malaisiens favoris. Déambulez de lieu en lien lieu pour écouter tour à tour de la pop, du reggae, de la folk et bien d’autres genres tout en profitant de l’atmosphère chaleureuse de Jalan Mesui.

As part of the Fête de la Musique celebrations, Kuala Lumpur welcomes the talented Melissa Laveaux. After her acclaimed first album in 2008, Melissa Laveaux has traded her acoustic folk style for an irresistibly energetic and commanding pop in Dying is a Wild Night. This Paris-based Canadian singer excels with an intimate writing style paired with a soulful and sensual voice. This second album explores rhythm and electronic sounds. For her first concert in Malaysia, Melissa will be accompanied by bandmate and notable jazz drummer Anne Paceo.

About Melissa LaveauxMelissa Laveaux is an Ottawa musician of Haitian descent. After completing her first album, she moved to France and worked on her second album entitled Dying Is a Wild Night, an excerpt from an Emily Dickinson quote: “Dying is a wild night and a new road”. Melissa has opened for several artists who have inspired her music: Meshell Ndegeocello, Feist and Lura. She has also performed at jazz and popular music festivals around the globe and often performs in Japan and Spain. Melissa admits that she listens to music more than she writes and describes her music as Indie afro-rock, with a touch of folk and pop.

Après le succès de son premier album en 2008, Mélissa Laveaux a échangé sa folk acoustique pour une pop percutante et irrésistible sur Dying is a Wild Night. La chanteuse canadienne installée à Paris excelle grâce à une écriture intime et une voix sensuelle et juvénile. Son second opus explore cette fois une rythmique et des sonorités plus synthétiques. Pour son premier concert en Malaisie, Melissa sera accompagnée de la batteuse de jazz Anne Paceo.

A propos de Melissa LaveauxNée de parents haïtiens, Melissa Laveaux a grandi à Ottawa. A la sortie de son premier album, elle part s’installer en France et prépare son deuxième album, Dying is a Wild Night, qui tire son nom des vers de la poétesse américaine Emily Dickinson: “Dying is a wild night and a new road”. Melissa a fait la première partie de plusieurs artistes dont se nourrit sa musique parmi lesquels Meshell Ndegeocello, Feist et Lura. Elle s’est produite dans des festivals de jazz et de musique pop à travers le monde et joue souvent au Japon et en Espagne. Melissa le confie sans difficulté, elle écoute beaucoup plus de musique qu’elle n’en écrit, c’est ce qui remplit ses chansons de mille nuances et influences parfaitement assimilées.

The Dewan Filharmonik Petronas welcomes famous French conductor Stéphane Denève and English piano soloist Steven Osborne for two performances with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in “Rachmaninoff forever”. This program features two of Rachmaninoff’s most popular compositions, the haunting Vocalise and the exhilarating Second Piano Concerto, whilst the second half features French ballet music – suites from Poulenc’s Les Biches (“Deer”) and Roussel’s Bacchus and Ariane.

About Stéphane DenèveStéphane Denève is Chief Conductor of the Suttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. Recognized internationally for the exceptional quality of his performances and programming, he regularly appears at major concert venues with the world’s leading orchestras and soloists. He has a special affinity for music of his native France, the first CD in his Roussel cycle was awarded a prestigious Diapason d’Or.

“The Brats of KL”, comprising 32 actors from the French Lycée Kuala Lumpur, invites you to attend two of its plays.

For the last ten years, a group of passionate theatre amateurs have been gathering to share their common passion. The company “Kopi Theatre”, comprising 12 actors, is requesting your presence to attend their new play: “For two by Claude De”. You will be given the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes where anything can happen.

Gallery 69 is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Yvan Magnani in Kuala Lumpur. For many years Yvan Magnani has painted only one thing: the earth, its creases, its fault lines… We all share an immense love for the earth and therefore the earth unites us. This is why Magani’s paintings keep captivating us, again and again. Coming from France, the artist will be present at the exhibition launchComing from France, the artist will be present at the exhibition launch on Wednesday 21 May at 7pm.

The exhibition was prepared with the support of our Guest Writer Philippe Mengue and directed by Patrice Vallette.

Depuis de nombreuses années ou bien peut-être depuis toujours, Yvan Magnani ne peint qu’une chose : la terre, ses plis, ses failles, ses poussées profondes. N’est-ce pas alors cet immense amour de la Terre que nous partageons qui, encore et toujours, suscite notre fascination pour les œuvres d’Yvan Magani ? Venu spécialement de France, l’artiste sera présent au vernissage de l’exposition qui aura lieu mercredi 21 mai à 19h.

L’exposition a été préparée avec le soutien de l’écrivain invité Philippe Mengue et conduite par Patrice Vallette.
