Fads and Fashion T-Shirt Design

In today's fashion creative t-shirts are very popular. The sayings and logos are very diverse and wide. Your task is to create your own t-shirt that reflects your own unique personality so that you will have an item of clothing that represents you rather than a company or brand name.  Where to Start

1. Choose a slogan to start with for inspiration on the t-shirt.  There are some ideas below but feel free to use a different quote if there are others that suit you better.

Quotations/Slogans:

o I’m brainstorming here. And what a storm it is…o Which is bigger, a bazillion or a gazillion?o “Intelligence is not to make no mistakes, but quickly to

see how to make them good.” — Bertolt Brechto  “I know that I am intelligent because I know that I

know nothing.” — Socrateso  “It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing

is to use it well.” — Rene Descartes

o  “Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you’ll have to ram them down people’s throats.” — Howard Aiken

o  “I prefer the wicked rather than the foolish. The wicked sometimes rest.” —Alexandre Dumas

o  I may be crazy, but I’m not stupid.

Although this list includes relatively short items, your T-shirts may have much more writingon them.

2. Once you have chosen the quote that you will work with you should create a design to go with it.  Your design must use bold colors and lines NO thin lines, NO gradients, and NO texture – just bold color and lines! As well as S ymmetrical balance (either bilateral or radial).

Symmetrical balance does not mean that one side of the composition is a mirror image of the other, nor does the focal point need to be dead center of the composition. Symmetrical balance creates emphasis and naturalism towards a focal point – at least 90% of good t-shirts have symmetrical balance.

The use of good symmetry and bold design are key to success as a professional designer / artist.

3. You should draw your t-shirt design onto the paper that is provided or you can use Gimp or Inkscape to create a logo. Inkscape is a very powerful vector graphics tool that does and excellent job of creating 3-D drawings. There are some excellent tutorials on this link including how to make South Park Characters. If you like working with computers then I would suggest that you try working with Inkscape or Gimp to create your t-shirt design.

At the end of this document is a T-shirt template to use.

4. Once you have completed your t-shirt design you are to upload it here along with a self-evaluation for the project.

What is the main idea you were trying to express in your project? What were your intentions?

How did you use the elements and principles of art throughout your art work? Talk about how you used the elements of design (line, shape, form, space, value, texture, color) in your project to achieve the following (where applicable): balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, contrast, unity.

What methods did you use to develop your ideas? For example, did you brainstorm, create a concept map, research, improvise, try different materials or techniques, etc?

Did you take risks by trying something new? Explain. What were some of the unexpected problems that you had to solve while you were

working? What decisions and choices did you make to help solve these problems? What was the most interesting or challenging think about what you did? What have you learned from this particular project? What did you do outside of class to enrich the project? If you were to experience this project again what would you change or do differently? Describe a new project/activity that might grow out of the one in which you just

participated?
