In Memory Of...Martin Belsky, a long time friend and member, passed away from an illness last May. His memorial service will be at MSD at the newly renamed, Martin Belsky Gymnasium at 1:00 pm on Sunday October 6th. Following the service, dinner will be served at FAD.

Mike Gelaude, husband of Peggy Gelaude and a good friend to many FAD members and the Deaf Community, passed away suddenly in July. He will be sorely missed by many.

Jim Wollard, husband of Kat Vogotmann-Wollard and brother of Bob Wollard passed away in his sleep. He was 69 years old. There will be a memorial service in Kalamazoo and Flint. Dates to be announced.

Big NewsHelen Boucher, a favorite among many FAD members, is resigning her position as the Interim Director of CAC and will return to freelance interpreting. She will still be around but will be missed at CAC. Best wishes to Helen!

Anita and Jim Gable traveled to Pennsylvania and Maryland.  They attended the Deaf Senior of America convention in

Baltimore, Maryland.  They had a wonderful time.

This summer David and Maureen Leonard drove to California to visit Chad Leonard and his girlfriend Krishna. On their way there they visited the beautifully awesome Yosemite, King Canyon, and Sequoia National Park. They enjoyed Sequoia the most. David climbed 400 steps to the Moro Rocks. The climb was tough but worth it! They attended Chad’s friends’ beautiful hippie wedding. The bride and groom also hosted a Music Festival, which they enjoyed. While in southern California, they visited Hollywood, Sunset Blvd, San Diego, Coronado island, Old Loma Light House, Pacific Beach and Malibu. They drove up on Route 1 to North California. While there, they visited 13 different lighthouses. Thanks to Pam, they toured the Monterey Aquarium - worth it! In San Francisco, they visited the Muir Woods, Fisher Wharf and ate at Mozzeria (deaf owned restaurant). On their way back home, they stopped in Wyoming to visit Marureen’s brother Cork. For the whole trip - they spent $1,333 on fuel and drank 92 water bottles! They had a great trip but very happy to be home in PURE MICHIGAN!

Thanks to generous donors, including FAD Auxiliary’s FAD Youth Campers, Tyler Naeyaert had a wonderful week at Deaf Film Camp in Camp Mark 7. He trained under Wayne Betts, a well known deaf filmmaker (he also co-founded ConvoVRS), Braam Jordaan, a deaf animator from South Africa and a screenwriter for “Switched at Birth”. Tyler learned a lot there. Thanks everyone!

The Flint Deaf Dart League had a good time for their annual fishing trip. Marty Galentine, Tim Hudkins, Tom Inches, Mel Frelich & Steve Gemmill bagged 25 walleyes altogether. Their trip made the local newspaper.

Cindy Smolinski flew to Washington to spend a month with her mother and siblings.  Her mother has since moved to a senior home and her father

passed away last winter.  Cindy was saying her mother was in good spirits and it was a wonderful visit with her mother and siblings.

Victoria Wears, Robin Rhinehart, Madison Rhinehart and Alyssa Hudkins had a great time at Koda Camp in Wisconsin. Big thanks to FAD Aux’s FAD Youth Campers!

Many FAD members enjoyed the annual Snowmobile Club’s camp out in Mio, Michigan. 120 people showed up. Ken and Judy Lowrie were amazing chefs. The weather was perfect.

Katie Dreyer’s family had a great family reunion up north. All her brothers, sisters and families from Michigan, California and Virginia rented a huge log cabin. They also rented many water toys. Everyone had a blast.

Jason and Andrea Reidel, along with their kids practically lived in their RV all summer. They camped everywhere in Michigan and were rarely home. They also adopted two adorable puppies and named them Berry & Cherry.

Kim and Jerry Beaver are grandparents once again. Jody Beaver and his wife Nikki, had their second child this summer. Her name is Maci and she’s a doll!

Tyler Naeyaert and his mom Stevie both made a video for

ZVRS and won 3rd place. They received a $100 Visa Card. The Video is posted on Stevie Naeyaert’s YouTube page. Go look!

Gloria and Tim Hudkins' daughter, Marla, got married last June to Mark.  The wedding was officiated by Tim's oldest daughter, Tina.  This was an outdoor wedding and the weather was perfect for the wedding.  The reception was held in a barn and it was very cozy!!

Merrill and Peggy Frelich flew to Devil's Lake, North Dakota, for his mother's, Esther, memorial service.  There was a problem getting a room at any of the hotels since they are all full due to the oil business.  Fortunately, North Dakota School for the Deaf had a dorm for the whole family.  It was perfect!  As it was easier to set up a table for all 15 family members in one room.  And plenty of bedding for everyone.

Hallie Smith, Tyler Naeyaert and Rosie Switras ran in the Color Run in Lansing last summer. They had a ball! Hallie, Rosie and Marcus Bently also participated in the Warrior Dash in Mt. Morris. Tough guys!

In July, Peppy Stuckless attended a wedding at Virginia Beach, VA for Tori Calaman, a deaf girl she knew since she was a toddler. Peppy was their family’s deaf mentor. Tori

married Joseph Pfaff, who comes from a deaf family. Tori’s hearing family cried at the wedding because all the ASL there was so beautiful. Tori and Joseph Pfaff will live in Iowa for a few years.

Colleen Smith (Hallie Smith’s sister) and her family were in town this summer. They got to visit with several FADers before heading back home to California.

The ASL Power show had some FADers in it - Jules Chapko, Rosie Switras, Tyler Naeyaert and Peggy Gelaude’s daughter, Jenny. They put on an amazing show last June.

Chris Mofield and Robert Alward will be wed on September 21st. Congrats to the newly weds!

Last summer - several FAD members attended a protest against the Deaf and Hearing Services taking advantage of deaf senior citizens in the Southeastern part of Michigan. Diana McKittrick was almost arrested. It was a good experience for everyone there.

Several FADers attended Deaf Day at Cedar Point in August. They had a good time even though they spent most of the day in lines. Waiting in lines with friends was still fun. Those who went were Tammy Delitka, Tyrus Hudkins, Tyler Naeyaert, KJ Wears, Hannah

Wears, Danny Kennedy and many other MSD friends.

Gina Colombo and her family had a great summer. They traveled to UP and visited Garlyn Zoo, Oswald's Bear Ranch, Mystery Spot, pictured Rocks, Shipwrecked tours, Soo locks, Castle Rock, Tahquamenon Falls, and several spots. They also visited several Mackinaw City and the Island. Their girls passed a tough test on green belt to red belt at Flushing Karate.

FAD 2013 Softball Team: Mike Koon, Jessie Burns, Doug Ritter, Marcus Bentley, Ray McCall, Ron Lanning, Chris Kendzior, Brandon Locke, Derek Burns, Mike Carpenter, Adam Phipps, Jeremy

Nichols & Wayne Morford. Not pictured: Dragan Jaskic and Steven Whetstone. They had a good time playing during CAAD and NSAD.

Congrats to Steven Whetstone for his Grand Slam. Next year the team is hoping for a better year with their new coach, Alan McCall.

Community Forum 2013: Conversations Today Shaping Our Tomorrow

Organized by Marian Lage

In an effort to strengthen our community relations, to reconnect with the Deaf community and our founding values, as well as celebrate the rich cultural traditions of our collective gatherings, we invite Deaf community members, hearing, coda and Deaf interpreters to join us, free of charge, in the first Michigan Community Forum

As shared gathering places for our interpreting and Deaf community have disappeared, so too has the opportunity to share with each other ideas and inspirations for the future. This forum provides us with an opportunity to engage with Deaf community members and interpreters through panel discussions and small group discussions.

In this Community Forum we offer a place to rejoin, revisit and re-imagine the work our communities do to make a better place for all of us.

Dates and Location TBA - watch for more information.
