Our mission is to encourage
“An active and healthy education for life!”
At St Leonard’s College, the Health Sports and Exercise Science
(HSES) faculty includes both academic (curricular)
and non-academic (cocurricular) programs.
The non-academic programs are separated into:
• compulsory team sports, consisting of training and competition
against other schools; and,
• non-compulsory sports, known as “community sport”
This provides students with a wide variety of activities,
both within the school program and outside of the regular program.
Parents, Old Collegians, and members of the broader community
are also provided with opportunities to participate in activities
within the community sport programs which include swimming,
gym and yoga.

Academic Program structure (curriculum)
Practical and theoretical courses are provided which educate
and motivate students to live active and healthy lifestyles
by gaining knowledge about nutrition and exercise. The link
between physical, social and mental health on student wellbeing,
is reinforced within all courses.
Health and Physical Education
Students in ELC to Year 4 participate in activities related to

Carnival Sports
In addition to House Carnivals, St Leonard’s College competes
against other schools in major athletics, cross-country and
swimming competitions throughout the year.
House Carnivals
All St Leonard’s students from prep to year 12 are members
of a College House. In addition to having a role in the pastoral
care program, Houses compete for points across a variety of
activities which are used to determine the champion house in
the Junior School, Middle School and Senior School each year.
In addition to assisting in the selection process for interschool
carnivals, the House Carnival program also helps to:
• develop and promote a strong sense of house spirit and
team bonding
• promote and maximise participation in exercise
• develop leadership opportunities for students
Interschool Carnivals
The College has a strong tradition of participation and success
in the carnival sports. In preparation for these events, extensive
blocks of training are held for all ability levels across athletics,
cross country and swimming. Years 3 to 6 students participate in
the SYDSA (South Yarra District Schools Association), composing
of 8 independent schools. Years 7 to 12 students participate in
the ACS (Associated Co-Educational Schools) which includes
7 independent coeducational schools.
