Our mission is to encourage

“An active and healthy education for life!”

At St Leonard’s College, the Health Sports and Exercise Science

(HSES) faculty includes both academic (curricular)

and non-academic (cocurricular) programs.

The non-academic programs are separated into:

• compulsory team sports, consisting of training and competition

against other schools; and,

• non-compulsory sports, known as “community sport”

This provides students with a wide variety of activities,

both within the school program and outside of the regular program.

Parents, Old Collegians, and members of the broader community

are also provided with opportunities to participate in activities

within the community sport programs which include swimming,

gym and yoga.

Academic Program structure (curriculum)

Practical and theoretical courses are provided which educate

and motivate students to live active and healthy lifestyles

by gaining knowledge about nutrition and exercise. The link

between physical, social and mental health on student wellbeing,

is reinforced within all courses.

Health and Physical Education

Students in ELC to Year 4 participate in activities related to

fundamental movement skills (e.g. balancing, running, jumping,

throwing, catching, striking, kicking), game sense (small team

games) and aquatics through which they are assisted in the

development of physical skills, movement techniques, games

tactics and social skills.

In Years 5 and 6, further development of each student’s physical

skills is achieved through opportunities for participation in small

team games, aquatics, movement skills and athletics.

In addition to further development of game sense, movement

skills, aquatics and athletics, health topics including relationships,

growth and development, substance abuse and food and fitness

are also covered in Years 7 and 8.

In Year 7, Food Science is compulsory and students learn about

hygiene, safety, food groups, recommended daily intakes and food

preparation.

In Years 8 to 10, Food Science electives provide students with

opportunities to build on skills and knowledge from Year 7. They

develop knowledge of the healthy eating pyramid, the danger of

fad diets, macro and micro nutrients, world cuisine and cooking for

special dietary requirements.

VCE: Units 1 to 4 Food Studies are offered.

In Years 9 and 10, health is further integrated into the curriculum

and focuses on effective decision-making related to alcohol, drugs

and risk-taking. Practical activities are grouped into community

sport, Active for Life, racquet sports and a variety of team games

to further develop each students’ sports sense and understanding.

Students also have the opportunity to try activities including yoga,

pilates, boxercise, golf, surf lifesaving, cycling and lawn bowls.

The Year 10 Sport Science elective allows students to gain an

understanding of the careers and pathways in allied health, sport

science and medicine. They study topics including anatomy,

biomechanics, sports medicine, exercise physiology and nutrition.

Students also undertake testing including muscular power, flexibility

and VO2 max.

VCE: Units 1 to 4 in both Health and Human Development and

Physical Education are offered.

IB: Sport, Exercise and Health Science at a Standard Level is offered.

Food Science

Food Science is integrated with Health and Physical Education from

Year 7 to VCE and covers concepts related to nutrition and food

preparation.

Sport Programs - all students

CIPSSA Sport

Students in Years 5 and 6 compete against other schools in the

Coeducational Independent Primary Schools Sports Association

(CIPSSA) competition. The aim of student involvement in this

program is for them to understand what it means to be a part of

a team, participating in a semi-competitive environment which

culminates in a full day round-robin lightning premiership at the end

of each season. CIPSSA sport is held every Friday afternoon and all

students participate in a summer and a winter sport.

Carnival Sports

In addition to House Carnivals, St Leonard’s College competes

against other schools in major athletics, cross-country and

swimming competitions throughout the year.

House Carnivals

All St Leonard’s students from prep to year 12 are members

of a College House. In addition to having a role in the pastoral

care program, Houses compete for points across a variety of

activities which are used to determine the champion house in

the Junior School, Middle School and Senior School each year.

In addition to assisting in the selection process for interschool

carnivals, the House Carnival program also helps to:

• develop and promote a strong sense of house spirit and

team bonding

• promote and maximise participation in exercise

• develop leadership opportunities for students

Interschool Carnivals

The College has a strong tradition of participation and success

in the carnival sports. In preparation for these events, extensive

blocks of training are held for all ability levels across athletics,

cross country and swimming. Years 3 to 6 students participate in

the SYDSA (South Yarra District Schools Association), composing

of 8 independent schools. Years 7 to 12 students participate in

the ACS (Associated Co-Educational Schools) which includes

7 independent coeducational schools.

High performing students are provided with opportunities for

further specialist coaching and to compete in the state

‘all schools’ events.
