Introduction Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), formerly known as School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) is formed in 1996 to train and produce expert human resources in the field of engineering and information technology for the benefit of the country.
Objectives The objectives of the School are as follows:
■ To produce graduates with technical knowledge, skills and attributes relevant to their needs.
■ To conduct innovative research and advancements in various engineering discplines by advancing, disseminating and applying engineering knowledge to improve the quality of life of the global communities
■ To conduct effetive community services for the benefit of the communities. The Faculty of Engineering provides platform for students’ personal growth, resulting in greater innovation and productivity for the benefit of society and the nation as a whole. To achieve the objective, the Faculty is working closely with industrial stakeholders to ensure that the offered programs are relevant and have the competitive advantage in the job market.

Programmes
Civil Engineering is concerned with the planning, design and construction of the infrastructure for the benefit of mankind. Civil engineers are creative professionals who combine theory, practical and managerial skills in their work activities. The Civil Engineering programme at UMS contain elements of theoretical and practical nature and designed to provide students with a sound basis for a professional career. Students learn among others, materials, structures, geotechnics, hydraulics, water resources, surveying, management and law, accounting and final year research project. The theoretical aspects are reinforced with practical through laboratory sessions, design projects field works, industrial visits and training attachment. Courses that have been offered are: Civil Engineering Material, Engineering Geology, Statistic, Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Hydrology, Traffic and Highway and Finite Element Method.
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS
Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a four years programme of study which emphasizes the processing of energy and information using electromagnetic phenomenon and electrical properties of materials. This programme involves the practical application of physical principles and technology of electricity, material science, electronics etc. for heating, lighting, industrial drives, robotics, radio and communications and computer for information processing and control. Electrical & electronic engineers are found in every branch of industry and commerce. Students study circuit analysis, electronics, microelectronics, power electronics, electrical machines & drives, power system, control system, high voltage engineering, energy utilization, computer and digital design, analogue and digital communication, signal and image processing, robotic and industrial automation. The courses are supplemented by laboratory works and industrial visits to manufacturing companies. Ten weeks of industrial training and one-year individual project work (final year project) are mandatory for all students of this programme.
Chemical Engineering is a branch of engineering covering the design and operation of industrial plants for the conversion of raw materials into useful value-added products by economic, hazard-free, environment-friendly processes. An engineer should be trained in applying physics, chemistry and mathematics in identifying, analyzing problems, and synthesizing optimum solution. He will need to have the skills to tackle multi-disciplinary problems and work in a team as well as on his own. We aim to produce professional and ethical graduates who have the capacity to manage the nation’s resources responsibly in the aspects of environment, safety, health and social welfare by registering as Graduate Engineers

and qualifying for the Professional Engineer status, realize the importance of further professional growth through continuing education, and contribute as leaders through their professional training via their participation in activities either governmental or non-governmental, local and overseas.
Chemical engineers are frequently in demand in the manufacturing, processing industry to manage large scale process plants producing food, agricultural chemicals, medicine, consumer products, oil and gas, and petrochemicals.
Students study, among others, thermodynamics, chemical and bioprocessing, unit operation, safety and loss prevention plant design, management and accounting. Courses that have been offered are: Laboratory 1 to 6, Process Control, Particle Technology, Petroleum Processing, Solid Waste Management, and Plant Design Project I & II, Computers and Process Simulation and many others.
Mechanical Engineering is concerned with the design, development and manufacture of equipment and products. As a profession, it is intertwined with every aspect of manufacturing industry such as research and development, design, manufacture, testing, marketing and technological development.
The 4-year programme in Mechanical Engineering provides the student with the necessary skills in theory and application of machinery, thermodynamics, manufacturing, management, CAD, product design and related courses. A major input of the programme is the emphasis on laboratory and computer aided Cproduct design. Graduates of this programme find employment in manufacturing industry, marketing, consulting firms and mechanical and electrical engineering construction company.
Courses that have been offered are: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Materials, Strength of Materials, Mechanics of Machines, Manufacturing Technology, Heat Transfer, Engineering Control and Operational Research.
The rapid growth of computing industry and information technology in the country requires a large number of computer engineering professionals at a rate of about 10% per year until 2010. To meet this need UMS offers this programme with a primary objective of providing broad base education in electronics, computer hardware and software. Students study technical skills in understanding, designing and applying electronic circuits covering main areas of microprocessors, computer peripherals, power electronics and use of computers for programme development. Employment prospects are good and graduates find employment in a wide spectrum of industry and organizations primarily concerned with modern development of computing, communications and electronics. Courses that have been offered are: Electrical and Electronics Technology, Electrical Circuits Analysis, Analogy Electronics, Probability & Random Process, Microprocessors, Control Systems Lab, Electromagnetic fields and Waves, and Electrical Machines & Drives.
