Faculty and Staff Newsletter Sept. 5, 2011 Make Plans to Attend the 18th Annual Soybean Festival Visit online for events: UT Martin’s Institute of Civic Engagement will host several events the week before 9/11 in memory of the tragedy. Events and activities include: •Tuesday, Sept. 6, Dr. Malcolm Koch, from the university’s new program in International Security Studies, will present a panel discussing the “Political Implications of 9/11” from 7-9 p.m. in Campbell Auditorium, Andy Holt Humanities Building. •Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Institute for Civic Engagement will feature its weekly “Times Talk” discussion forum on “Remembering 9/11: Student Reflections on a Day of Terror.” UT Martin faculty, staff, students and community members will meet to reflect on 9/11 and its impact. The forum will begin at noon in the Skyhawk Cafeteria, Room 125, Boling University Center. •Thursday, Sept. 8, a memorial ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the University Center Plaza, between the Boling University Center and the Paul Meek Library. Chancellor Tom Rakes will welcome guests, and the national anthem will be presented. Selected readings are also scheduled to take place. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held in the Watkins Auditorium, Boling University Center. •Friday, Sept. 9, there will be a campus-wide pause between 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., reflecting the times the twin towers were struck. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to step outside and observe a moment of silence in respect for those who lost their lives. •Sunday, Sept. 11, will be observed as a national day of service. Student organizations and community members are encouraged to participate by conducting their own community service on or around 9/11 in remembrance of the day and report the information to David Taylor, [email protected]. ICE has several service events scheduled for those not involved in separate activities. All events noted are open to the public. Events Set to Commemorate 9/11 PERCUSSION TUNE UP DAY - Guest artist Julie Davila (wearing green shirt) worked hands-on with six regional marching percussion sections at the 7th Annual UT Martin Drum Line Tune Up Day. Davila worked on technique, musicality and a variety of percussive subjects within the marching percussion genre. Julie also gave a clinic for all participating students and band directors using the UTM Marching Percussion Section (Dr. Julie Hill, coordinator, and Dr. Nola Jones, director of bands) as the demonstration group. The event welcomed more than 300 high school students and band directors to campus. The Department of Behavioral Sciences and the Institute for Civic Engagement will co-sponsor the fall 2011 Service Learning and Volunteer Fair on Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Boling University Center.

The fair is a chance for UT Martin students to connect with local organizations and agencies and learn about opportunities to volunteer within the surrounding community. Faculty members can also identify community partners for potential projects.

Many West Tennessee community service organizations will be represented, including, but not limited to, programs for elementary and high school students, mental health programs, living centers, food banks, clothing distribution organizations, child abuse prevention, hospice facilities and faith organizations.

ALUMNI LEADERSHIP MEETS – The UT Martin Alumni Council met Aug. 18 following the annual Legacy Luncheon and welcomed Mike Moss of Memphis, national chair of the UT Alumni Association Annual Fund, and Pam Loos of Clarksville, president of the UT Martin Alumni Council. Both were joined before the meeting by Chancellor Tom Rakes and Charley Deal, assistant vice chancellor for alumni relations and executive director of the WestStar Leadership Program. Mike is outgoing UT Alumni Association president, and both Pam and Mike volunteer significant time serving UT Martin.

University to Host Service Learning and Volunteer Fair

JOHN TANNER SPEAKS TO POLITICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS - Dr. Malcolm Koch’s political science class welcomed John Tanner, former U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District, as guest lecturer on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Tanner spoke in Watkins Auditorium as the presentation was open to the campus community. A luncheon was held before the presen-tation to welcome Tanner and his wife, Betty Ann, UT Board of Trustees member. Attend-ing the luncheon were, seated (left to right): Dr. Bryan Parsons, assistant pro-fessor, political science; Dr. Ernie Moser, dean, College of Business and Global Affairs; John Tanner, former congress-man, 8th Congressional District; and Dr. Ted Mosch, professor emeritus, political science.
