1. Theory contentsThis subject will provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals and the management of basicbiochemical methodologies relevant to their multiple applications in Veterinary Medicine. The achievement ofthese objectives requires a design based on the practical realization by each student of the experimental blocksthat are specified below:BLOCK I: Isolation and quantification of nucleic acids- Genomic DNA isolation.- Quantification of nucleic acids.BLOCK II: Amplification using the PCR technique, separation and visualization of nucleic acids.- Amplification using the PCR technique.- Separation of nucleic acid by electrophoresis in agarose gel.- Visualization of nucleic acids with gel-red and UV light.BLOCK III: Coupled enzymatic assays for the determination of activities and metabolitesBLOCK IV: Separation, visualization and quantitative analysis of proteins by electrophoresis.BLOCK V: Identification of proteins / antigens by immunochemical assays.- Western blotting.- ELISABLOCK VI: Immobilization of enzymes in alginate.
The subject "Application of Biochemical Methodologies in Veterinary Medicine" will provide students with anunderstanding of the fundamentals and the management of basic biochemical methodologies relevant to theirmultiple applications in Veterinary Medicine. The achievement of these objectives requires a design based on thepractical realization by each student of the experimental blocks that are specified below:BLOCK I: Isolation, quantification, separation and visualization of nucleic acids:- Isolation of genomic DNA from different meat products (hamburger, sausage, kebab ...).- Quantification of nucleic acids.BLOCK II: Amplification of nucleic acids using the PCR technique to identify the animal species from which themeat products used in the previous block come from.- Separation by agarose gel electrophoresis of nucleic acids.- Visualization of nucleic acids with gel-red and UV light.BLOCK III: Enzymatic assays coupled for the determination of activities and metabolites:-Determination of urea in serum and urine of different animals (horse, dog, cow ...).-Determination of glucose in serum from different animals (horse, dog, cow ...).-Determination of alkaline phostatase in animal serum (horse, dog, cow ...).-Determination of creatinine in serum and urine of different animals (horse, dog, cow ...).-Determination of blood hemoglobin (horse, dog, cow ...).BLOCK IV: Separation, visualization and quantitative analysis of proteins by electrophoresis.BLOCK V: Identification of proteins from different species by immunochemical assays:- Enzootic bovine leukosis and / or blue tongue ELISA.BLOCK VI: Construction of a bioreactor: immobilization of invertase in alginate (spherification technique)

The methodological strategies and the evaluation system contemplated in this Course Description will be adapted according tothe needs presented by students with disabilities and special educational needs in the cases that are required.
CONTINGENCY PLAN: CASE SCENARIO A
Case scenario A will correspond to a diminished on-site academic activity due to social distancingmeasures affecting the permitted capacity of classrooms.
General clarifications on the methodology on case scenario AA multimodal (hybrid) teaching system will be adopted, combining both on-site and remote classes viavideoconference (synchronous) that will be held in the timetable approved by the corresponding Faculty or School. The time distribution of teaching activities (both on-site and remote) will be decided by the aforementionedFaculties and Schools bearing in mind the permitted capacity of classrooms and social distancing measures asestablished at that time.Se incorporaran actividades asíncronas de refuerzo basadas en vídeos tutoriales y material docentecomplementario.A part of the practical classes will be taught by Daniel Lagal Ruiz.

Method of assessment of attendance (Scenario A):
In each of the instruments selected for evaluation, you must obtain the minimum qualification indicated in thetable. The evaluation of the case studies, placements reports and the laboratory practices are part of the continuousevaluation. There will also be an exam, as indicated in the table. In the extraordinary call for the course 20-21, all the continuous assessment instruments (case studies, placements reports and the laboratory practices) that were passed in the previous course will be added, and thosethat are pending will be included in the extraordinary call together with the final exam. In this case, they wouldhave to prepare a case studie, a placement report and answer some questions about laboratory practices, if theyhad not passed it in the previous course.
