CommunicAID at Work

C ommunic AID , Miami’s leading private 

 philanthropic organization, was founded in 1994 by a group of citizens who were concerned by the rising number of homeless in Miami and by the apparent lack of services to assist them: housing and assistance. What began as an effort to lobby the Florida state government to  fund Miami’s first homeless shelter quickly turned into a full-fledged private community effort aimed at providing 

social services for the entire community.

Our Mission:

CommunicAID’s sincere mission is tounlock the philanthropic potential of our local community in order to securea better future for Cincinnati’sdisadvantaged. We are geared towardsproviding the poor with personaldevelopment programs, food, shelterand connections to community

resources. Through our grants, fund-raising and spirited volunteerismCommunicAID aims to build acommunity that is caring, creative andcommitted to the welfare of the poorand homeless. We are committed tonot only helping but empoweringMiami’s disadvantaged.

Our Community Needs Us!

According to the Florida Department of Children and Families Office onHomelessness Everyday in Florida, more than

60 thousand men, women and children don’t haveany place to call home. 

Here were their findings:

There are other indicators that homelessnessmay be on the rise in Florida.

 Florida is beginning to see a rise in the

number of families applying for cash

assistance under the federal TemporaryAssistance for Needy Families: 2007 - 2008Percent Change 20.5%

 The number of persons receiving FoodStamps continues to increase by 18.9% in2008 compared to 2007.

 Local meal and food pantries are reporting

increased demands, ranging from 10 to 30persons.

Build – We built Miami’s first homeless

shelter and continue to grow with your

investments. We also build relationships

with

affiliate organizations to create a

“community” of pooled resources.

Empower – Our “Back-to-Work”

programs empower the poor and

teaches them the skills needed to stay

off the streets.

Educate – We provide counseling,

public lecture series on housing and

educational opportunities that show

those in need where resources are.

Engage – By aggressively volunteeringin the community through schoolprograms, community fundraising andsocial programs we bring our programsto the people.

Where We Work in the MiamiCommunity:

With the opening of the Mercer Street

location CommunicAID is now able to

offer comprehensive social programs

throughout the city of Miami’s geographic

area.

With a generous grant from the

Florida State Housing Authority we

opened Miami’s first homeless shelter 

in 1998.

Mercer Street Community Center

Mercer Street Community center is

about outreach and growth. This

recently opened food bank and 

shelter also embraces our family of 

affiliates by offering the operational

space to support the wide range of 

social programs that our community 

needs. It includes a 60-person day 

shelter and 30 person family shelter.
