7/28/2019 Facts About German Foreign Trade in 2011
1/11
In 2011, Germany was the worlds third largest
exporter (in USD, behind China, USA), and the
third largest importer (behind USA, China) o
goods.
Germanys share of world trade (exports and
imports in USD) remained almost unchanged in
2011 at 7.5 % (2010: 7.6 %). The USAs world trade
shares were 10.3 % (2010: 10.6 %) and Chinas
increased to 10.0 % (2010: 9.7 %).
The export ratio (i. e. the proportion o GDP
accounted or by exports) stood at 50.1 % in 2011;
the import ratio stood at 45.0 %. The degree of
openness (yardstick: imports plus exports in rela-
tion to GDP) stood at 95.1 % (2010: 88.2 %). This
makes Germany the most open economy o all
G7 countries.
The foreign trade surplus amounted to 5.1 % in
relation to GDP. Net foreign demand contributed
approx. one quarter of the expansion of GDP (GDP
+3.0 %; net oreign demand +0.8 percentage points).
The main trading partners continued to be the
European countries, which received 71 % o
German exports and rom which 69 % o German
imports came. Trade with other EU countries
(trade o goods within the EU) accounted or 52.9 %
o exports and or 56.3 % o imports. The shares o
trade with the Euro area totalled 39.7 % of exports
(shares: F 9.6 %; NL 6.5 %; I 5.9 %) and 37.7 % of
imports (shares: NL 9.1 %; F 7.4 %; I 5.4 %).
The leading sales markets or German goods out-
side the EU were the USA(7.0 %), China (6.1 %) and
Switzerland (4.5 %). The leading suppliers rom
outside the EU were China (8.8 %), USA(5.4 %) and
Russia (4.5 %).
The proportion of goods in total exports (goods
and services) stood at 85.7 % and at 82.3 % in all
imports.
Vehicles and vehicle parts (17.4 %), machinery
(15.2 %), chemical products (9.5 %) and computer/
electrical equipment (8.0 %) accounted or the larg-
est shares of exports. The main imported goods
were computer/electrical equipment (9.9 %), oil and
gas (9.1 %), cars and car parts (9.0 %) and chemical
products (7.9 %).
As in the previous year, Germany recorded a sur-plus in the trade in goods o 158.2 billion (2010:
154.9 billion). A total o 119.1 billion was with
other EU countries, o which 80.3 billion was with
Euro area countries. Exports to the EU worth
627.3 billion (o which 420.8 billion went to the
Euro area countries) contrasted with imports worth
508.2 billion (340.5 billion).
This means that approx. three quarters (75.3 %) o
the total German trade surplus is due to the export
surplus in relation to the other 26 EU countries
half of this surplus (50.8 %) to the Euro area alone.

(55 %), but in the services sector only one in seven
(15 %).1
More than 1/3 of domestic demand is covered by
imports (import penetration rate of 34 %; 1991:
below 20 %). In the case o exports, the share of
imported upstream products is actually signii-
cantly higher, at 42 % (1995: 29.7 %).
