Thrilling races, new technologies and fascinating locations – I’m sure you’ll agree with me: the Formula E inaugural season whetted everyone’s appetite for more. For Schaeffler, the season opener in Beijing rings in a new chapter in motorsports. As the exclusive technology partner, the company has developed the powertrain of the new ‘ABT Schaeffler FE01’ together with ABT Sportsline. On the following pages, we would like to provide you with details, background info on the team, plus a preview of the new season.

Coveted autograph: Daniel Abt always has plenty of time for the fans
ally become a hot spot for drivers, fans and new technologies. 361,000 people watched the first eleven races live at the venues, joined by 187.5 million television viewers. On October 24, the FIA Formula E Championship will start to its second season in Beijing. From there, it will move on to Europe via Malaysia, South and North America. Paris and Mexico City will be new venues on the calendar. The German home round will be held in Berlin on May 21, 2016.
SCHAEFFLER AND ABT CONTINUE TO FORM A TEAM
Together with ABT, Schaeff ler forms the ‘German national team’ in an illustrious field of ten inter
national outfits. The company’s role by far exceeds that of a sponsor. As the exclusive technology partner, Schaeffler has developed the entire powertrain of the new race car, together with the now named ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team.
Daniel Abt (22) and Lucas di Grassi (31), who captured third place in the teams’ classification in the inaugural season, are sitting in the cockpits of the fully electric singleseaters again. Lucas di Grassi was even in contention for the drivers’ title up to the last race.
The GermanSouth American duo will be meeting with prominent competitors. The
former Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, as well as Nico Prost, Bruno Senna and Nick Heidfeld, will be on the grid. The Brazilian Nelson Piquet jr. is the title defender.

ABT Schaeffler FE01 is ready to goThe summer break is over: the opener in Beijing sees the return of Formula E to the world’s race tracks. Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport faces the challenge with new technologies
When in the heart of the Chinese capital, on October 24, all the red lights are extinguished to start the race a new chapter in motorsports will begin for Schaeffler. As the exclusive technology partner of Team ABT Sportsline, the company has developed the powertrain of the new ‘ABT Schaeffler FE01.’
possible efficiency, high reliability and optimal thermal management due to modified cooling. “Our motor has better torque and better efficiency than its predecessor,” says Prof. Peter Gutzmer, who as Chief Technology Officer is responsible for the developments at Schaeffler and was faced with a tight schedule:
While in the Formula E’s inaugural season all the teams were still competing with standardspecification cars, the development of the entire powertrain has been allowed for the 2015/2016 season. Its core element is the electric motor named ‘ABT Schaeffler MGU 01.’ The project was focused on achieving the best
4 FACT SHEET XXL FIA FORMULA E 2015 / 2016
“The first meetings took place about ten months ago and, only half a year later, the first parts were produced. The timing was tight, as always in motorsports, but we managed it.”
NEW TRANSMISSION IS STIFFER AND MORE COMPACT
Schaeffler also developed a new transmission that is coordinated with the motor and was produced by the company’s renowned partner Hewland according to special specifications. It is stiffer and more compact. To achieve the goal of minimizing the number
of shifting events per lap, the engineers opted for a threespeed variant. The suspension has been optimized as well, now featuring higher stiffness and improved kinematics. The connecting link between all the elements is the newly developed software that manages the interaction between all the components. The perfection of its functionality has been one of the focal aspects of the tests.
“For us, it was clear from the beginning that we wouldn’t do anything by halves. That’s why we looked at all the areas released by the regulations and developed optimized solutions of our own together with our partners,” says Prof. Peter Gutzmer. This is a standard to which Schaeffler is committed outside motorsports as well. Gutzmer: “Electric mobility as a whole, including hybrid solutions as well as fully electric driving, will significantly define mobility of the future. The Formula E commitment is an ideal way of being at the forefront of this technology and
sets an example: we want our engineers to push limits and to seek competition – in production just like in motorsports.”
PERFECT AMBASSADOR FOR THE SCHAEFFLER VISION
Schaeffler has been involved in Formula E as a partner of the only German team from day one and is now taking the next step. “The collaboration with ABT Sportsline is outstanding. The team gelled in the first season, goes about its work in a professional and successoriented manner, and is the perfect ambassador for our vision of ‘Mobility for tomorrow,’” says Gutzmer.
With the drivers the squad that has officially been entered under the name of ‘ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport’ has opted for continuity as well. Sitting in the electric race cars named ABT Schaeffler FE01 will again be Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi. No other race driver mounted the podium during the season as often as the South American sporting the Schaeffler colors.
Eager anticipation: Prof. Peter Gutzmer, Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi look forward to the second Formula E season together

A disbelieving look, a shake of the head, followed by goose bumps and the sudden realization: I’ve won the first ever Formula E race. The debut for the new electric racing series is only decided in the last corner of the season opener in Beijing: Nick Heidfeld and Nico Prost collide, drop out and, as a result, clear the way for the Brazilian. A circle closes for di Grassi: he was involved in the development of the series from the very beginning and is now the first to hoist the biggest trophy into the smoggy sky hanging over China’s capital.
Setbacks are part of motorsport. At the heart of the Argentinian capital, the only German team in the field also makes this bitter experience: Lucas di Grassi retires after his car suffers suspension damage. Team mate Daniel Abt is in the running, but aims too high on the final lap: crash and out following a bold attempt at overtaking that, if successful, would have seen him mount the podium. Even though ABT Sportsline defends its ‘place in the sun’ as championship leader, the points will be sorely missed later.
At the back of the field after the first corner, almost an hour later on the podium: the fans lining the street circuit in Putrajaya, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, enjoy a thrilling race day. And two strong comeback drives from Lucas di Grassi, who scythes through the field from the third last grid position to finish second, and from Daniel Abt, who initially drops way down the running order before fighting back to snatch tenth place and a point. The threatening monsoon ensures that the race starts early. Before the heavens open, ABT has claimed the lead in the teams’ classification.
Third race, third podium: Lucas di Grassi continues his series in December along the beach in Uruguay. This means: the Brazilian spends Christmas at the top of the overall rankings. Despite the beautiful backdrop with a pit lane directly on the Atlantic Ocean, the two ABT drivers remain focussed throughout: di Grassi takes third place and Daniel Abt demonstrates his potential yet again after recording the fastest race lap.

Time journey through first seasonFrom Beijing via Uruguay and Long Beach to Russia, Berlin and London: the first eleven Formula E races thrilled the motorsports world. A journey through time from the perspectives of Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi

Drivers’ championship lead reclaimed and points made up in the teams’ classification, in which Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt still hold second place. Despite this, the race day on Hollywood’s doorstep is one with mixed feelings: delight about di Grassi’s fourth podium finish of the season after two difficult races, but at the same time disappointment about Abt’s 15th place. After all, the youngster has recently become the first German to take a pole position in Formula E history. However, a drive through penalty robbed him of his just reward.
On May 9, Lucas di Grassi meets Prince Albert twice: once briefly for some small talk in the pit lane and a little later during the trophy presentation on the terrace of the Prince’s box. Second place in his adopted home puts Lucas di Grassi in a good position in the title battle at the start of the European season. It is probably the hardest won trophy so far, because the Brazilian attacks eventual winner Sébastien Buemi for the entire race while defending against Nelson Piquet jr. Daniel Abt retires.
He is the acknowledged star at the team’s home race – yet is unable to keep his trophy for the commanding victory. A few hours after the race, di Grassi is deprived victory because parts of the front wing do not comply with the rules. Mechanics had made changes during repair work. Reluctantly the team elects not to appeal the decision, which is considered incomprehensible by fans and media.
A race track directly in front of the Kremlin, autograph sessions and the podium on Red Square: the spectators in Moscow enjoy an
impressive premiere for Formula E. And yet another captivating race, in which Lucas di Grassi is among the leading protagonists: the Brazilian clinches second place and in doing so scores valuable points in the title battle, which heightens two races before the end. Daniel Abt adds important points for the teams’ championship. The German takes fifth place at the flag.
The fans in London and in front of the TV see a dramatic, nail-biting final for the first Formula E title and a Lucas di Grassi with great fighting spirit. Nevertheless: at the finish the Brazilian must settle for third place in the overall standings after the last of eleven races. Champion is Nelson Piquet jr. Formula E bids farewell in grand style with almost 60,000 spectators on the two race days.

All the cards finally fall into place for Daniel Abt in Miami: the youngest driver on the grid celebrates his third place on the podium together with top model Karolína Kurková. With only two laps to go Abt even looks like the winner of the US premiere for Formula E. Starting from fourth, the German produces a strong opening stint and takes the lead with a perfect pit stop by his team. However, on the last of 39 race laps, Abt is forced to watch his battery management and reduce pace. Clever.

A tradition of innovationThe world’s leading tuner of vehicles from the Volkswagen Group and successful motorsports team in the DTM: together with Schaeffler, ABT Sportsline enthusiastically tackles a new motorsports challenge in Formula E
ABT Sportsline is one of the most successful motorsport teams in Germany and Europe. Its history in racing dates back more than 60 years and began with initial victories scored
by Johann Abt in the 1950s. The first recorded success took place in a dirt track race, followed by victories and titles in touring car, sports car and formula racing. 2009 has gone down
in the company’s history as the most successful one to date: Timo Scheider won the DTM, Christian Abt the ADAC GT Masters in the Audi R8 and youngster Daniel Abt was victorious in the ADAC

Formel Masters. Previously, in 2007, Schaeffler and ABT had jointly celebrated success as well: with the logos of LuK, INA and FAG on his A4, Mattias Ekström won his DTM title number two.
Founded as a smithy in 1896, the ABT company has been continually developing ever since. Just one thing has never changed: the family still runs the com
pany with about 170 employees and partners in 50 countries around the world. CEO HansJürgen Abt now represents the fourth generation at the helm. For ABT, the commitment in Formula E also marks a return to the roots, as the team celebrated success in formula racing as far back as in the early 90s – among others, with Ralf Schumacher in the cockpit back then.

Side jobs: Lucas di Grassi is an Audi factory driver and competes in the WEC and at Le Mans in an R18 e-tron quattro. In June, he took fourth place in the 24-hour race. Daniel Abt, on his Le Mans debut with Team Rebellion Racing (photo at right), notched up a class victory and contests the remainder of the WEC as well.
How satisfied are you with the preparation for the new season? “The team and our technology partner Schaeffler have been working hard to prepare a perfect car for us drivers. None of the guys have had a real summer break. The tests were very positive, too – but we’ll only know what that means in comparison with the competition in Beijing on October 24.”
What do you like about Formula E in particular? “The tremendous locations, the fact that we only race on narrow city street circuits, plus the special challenges: it’s not only about accelerating, braking and steering, but also about keeping an eye on energy management and smart driving.”
What are your sporting goals? “The first season was a year of learning for me with a few highlights and a few setbacks. Now, I’d like to consistently battle for podium places.”
