Qatar continues to enjoy and the growing interest from investors and developers in The Pearl-Qatar as a leading mixed-use development, housing Doha’s fastest growing community.

“Megapolis is therefore a valuable addition to the family-oriented facilities that are planned for the Island and categorises as the new generation of hybrid recreation centres that embody exquisite designs and infrastructure with high tech and service sophistication,” he adds.

Families and friends now have an exciting new place to hang out, and we can’t wait for Megapolis to open to the public, for all to experience and enjoy!

Adding to the already long list of fantastic leisure activities in Qatar is Megapolis – a 5,000sqm family entertainment centre, set to open in Medina Centrale at The Pearl-Qatar this month in what promises to be the biggest indoor amusement centre in the region.

Think; a multitude of arcades with indoor, hi-tech 3D and 5D games and attractions like golf, bowling, snooker, billiard and darts, as well as an active sports zone and karaoke area. When you want to take a break from all the fun, there will be five fabulous food and beverage outlets to choose from; Saladworks, Earl of Sandwich, Cool de Sac, Camille’s Ice Cream and Mister Pizza.

On the March 14, Qatar Museums will open the 555 exhibition at the Fire Station in homage to The Art Center, the very first artist in residence initiative that took place in Doha in the early 1990’s and which ran for a decade. The name 555 is a play on the number 999 which residents used to dial to contact the Fire Station, paying tribute to the Civil Defence for their years of service to the people of Qatar. Curated by HE Sheikh Hassan Al Thani, the 555 exhibition aims to showcase a pivotal era in the development of arts not only in Qatar, but the region as a whole. The nostalgic exhibition will include installations, photographs, and videos of what Doha’s inaugural art residences were like, introducing visitors to a part of our recent history that has never been shared so extensively before. It will also highlight the significant impact and influence that those pioneering artists from 20 years ago have on art in our present day. The exhibition, running for three months, is on display at the renovated Civil Defence Building, known locally as Doha’s Fire Station, which has recently been transformed to host a new artist in residence programme. Fire Station: Artists in Residence fulfils a key part of Qatar Museum’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent by offering local artists opportunities to develop best practice by providing a platform for the exchange of ideas.

GO: The Artists in Residence programme, due to open later in 2015, will support local artists by providing 20 studios and gallery spaces. Registration for the residency programme for all artists in Qatar is now open until April 1 through the Fire Station website – www.firestation.org.qa.

However, this was all just a prequel for what was to come later, as we were shipped off to an arena that evening for Dynamo’s incredible Fiat 500X stage show. To see it for yourself, do a search for Dynamo and 500X on YouTube. You won’t be disappointed…

One of your most famous tricks was the one that took place right here, on The Shard. Can you tell us a bit more about it?It was the beginning of the final series of Mission Impossible. My first series started with me walking across the River Thames, and for the final series, I had to go out on a high, and I think the highest point in Europe was the right place to do that! The scariest part about that trick for me was how close the helicopter was getting to me. It wasn’t supposed to get within 200m of the building, and he was around 100m away from me, and it was super windy!

How was the view?Amazing. I was 1016ft above ground level.

INTERvIEW

I was officially the highest man-made thing in Europe!

Where do you find the inspirations for your magic?A lot of the inspirations now, to be honest, come from my Twitter followers. They always send me crazy ideas; “Can you do this? Can you do that? Can you make my work disappear? Can you help me pass my exams?” But occasionally they’ll send something that’s really awesome, and I think, “Wait a minute, can I do that?” A lot of my early inspiration came from working in a video store. That was my first job, after school, and the best part of it was that I got to take home the preview copies of upcoming releases. I watched things like the Matrix, and I was a little bit naïve and didn’t really know much about the movie industry, and I thought the stunts and the stuff that happened in the Matrix were real, so I tried to recreate them, and that’s where all my original ideas came from. You can see that in some of my TV shows and tricks.

Are you inspired by any of the other famous magicians, like Copperfield?Oh yeah, definitely! I mean, David Copperfield is one of the greats. I’ve been to see his show many times in Vegas, and I’ve hung out with him, he’s really good. He was from the Michael Jackson era,

when superstars were real superstars, and a show was a real show, and he still puts on two shows a day. He’s a genius, but my heroes aren’t magicians, they’re people like Michael Jackson, because when you see his performances, they’re magical,

even though he’s not a magician, it’s just his pure talent that is the magic. And Pharrell Williams, when he puts

out a record, you know that magic has happened in that studio.

Do you still enjoy street magic? If I’m honest, that’s my favourite thing. It’s harder to do nowadays, which is probably why I yearn for it a bit more, because I don’t have the luxury of being able to just walk in the street so much anymore without causing a scene. But, when I get the opportunity, I always like to go back to it, because that’s where I started, and it’s my favourite kind.

Is it getting harder to beat expectations?I think beating my own expectations for myself are always harder than beating those of the audience, because I’ve always strived to up my game and raise the levels of what I’m doing, and hopefully that’s shown in my work. It’s necessary, to have that pressure on myself because if I get to a point where I think it’s good enough, it’s not right anymore. It can never be good enough. I can always do better.

“Dynamo rose to fame performing street magic across the UK, which became the basis for his television and online popularity.”

Dynamo rose to fame performing street magic across the UK, which became the basis for his television and online popularity. As his profile increased, so did the scale of his tricks, and one of his most famous took place at the site of our interview, when he appeared suspended in mid air right on the pinnacle of the shard itself. Now, Dynamo has partnered with Fiat to launch their new crossover SUv, the 500x, as Fiat felt that Dynamo’s qualities embodied the same as their new model, namely dynamic, show stopping, unique and ‘magical’!

Tell us the process by which the paintings and photographs were curated? In the case of Qajar Women, we started discussing the history of art in Qajar Iran, so roughly from the late 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century. We realised that a number of exhibitions and publications have looked at the way that powerful men are portrayed in the artwork of that period, such as kings and princes. Portraits of these figures often emphasise their long bears, regal stature, royal finery and jewellery and their prominently displayed weapons, thereby creating a visual language of masculinity. We wanted to look at the other side of the picture; what was the visual language of femininity during this period? How were women depicted in the artworks of Qajar Iran? Some excellent research has been carried out on this topic, and there is a brilliant online database about women in Qajar Iran, but no museum exhibitions have taken place on this topic, so we decided that it was worth exploring. In terms of selecting the objects and how they would be displayed in order to tell a story, this process involves reviewing the contents of our museum collections, researching the objects and figuring out what narratives and themes we

want to explore. For instance, in the section on “notions of beauty,” we selected objects with depictions of women from earlier periods of Iran, for instance, the late Safavid and Zand periods, and juxtaposed them with images of women in artworks from the Qajar period, to demonstrate the ways in which notions of femininity and female beauty change in artistic depictions over time, as a result of shifting social and historical trends. There is also an implicit comparison with ideals of female beauty today, which are very different from those of the Qajar period. Furthermore, we juxtaposed the traditional artworks – such as paintings on lacquered mirror cases, manuscript illustrations and watercolours – with contemporary art production, to show the audience how the iconography of female beauty from the

Qajar period still resonates with artists and viewers today.

Why should the public visit this exhibition? The museum-going audience would not normally have a chance to see these objects, as they are not on display in our permanent galleries, and will be presented in our fourth floor temporary exhibition galleries from March 2015 until January 2016, after which they will return to storage. It is a unique opportunity to explore the theme of the artistic representation of women in an important period of artistic production that still influences contemporary artists today. Also, it is a rare chance to view traditional art objects in juxtaposition with the contemporary artworks that they have inspired.

Tell us about your favourite or most interesting pieces going on display… For us, as curators, it is always difficult to choose which are the most interesting pieces going on display, as they are all important for various reasons. But, perhaps, it is possible to single out the lacquered mirror cases and pen boxes, as the depiction of women

ARTS

on these objects provides some insight into the ways that male artists viewed women during the Qajar period. The image of women in these artworks, which also had a utilitarian function, seems to be used to express a range of ideas, from intimacy, to domesticity, to motherhood, or women as a possible source of threat to the moral order. In addition to the pen boxes and mirror cases, the illustrations of women as the archetypal heroines of Persian epic poetry should also resonate with audiences today. While the stories are eternal in their appeal, the ways in which Qajar artists re-imagined the image of women in these ancient times, according to their own aesthetic standards, is fascinating to observe.

What themes do the paintings and photographs explore and why do you think they will appeal to visitors? There are four main artistic themes explored through the objects from our permanent collection: the daily lives of women in Qajar Iran; aristocratic pastimes and women in power; changing notions of beauty; and women as symbols in Qajar artistic production. Each of these themes is explored through specific objects, and we hope that by displaying these objects, the audience will make connections to their own lives and experiences, and perhaps question their own aesthetic preferences. The themes also touch on questions of how women in the Qajar period negotiated the passage between public and private spheres (as women today still have to do), how they engaged in public and private festivities, how they exercised power at the Qajar court, and how their image in artworks was used to express a range of complex ideas, ranging from the personal to the emotional to the political. We also hope that the juxtaposition of contemporary reproductions inspires young artists to draw on the Islamic art tradition for their own artworks. We hope that the audience will have learned more about an important and intriguing period in the history of Islamic Art, and also that they will have appreciated a new and sometimes challenging aesthetic.

A new art exhibition was unveiled at InterContinental Doha The City, with Asian-inspired artwork taking prime position on the walls at Hwang Pan Asian restaurant. The paintings, created by Doha-based French artist Jacinthe Lamontagne-Lecomte, perfectly complement the intimate décor of the dining venue. The artwork celebrates amazing people from all across Asia that captured the artist’s attention and provided the source of inspiration for the pieces.

From a little girl living in the Bali countryside to an elderly Chinese gentleman people-watching on a traditional village street to the giraffe neck ladies in Burma, Jacinthe’s “Made in Asia” is a powerful exploration of the many different cultures throughout Asia. In addition, Jacinthe’s good friend Diana Marie Watts serves as her muse and is depicted in several of the paint-ings as a traditional Japanese geisha.

“I was thrilled to create this exhibition for InterContinental Doha The City and I appreciate the support the hotel provides to the local art commu-nity,” Jacinthe says. “I’m very pleased with the way the artwork looks amidst the Pan Asian décor of Hwang restaurant.”

For the exhibition, Jacinthe used photo transfer with mixed media on canvas. This type of artwork begins as a photograph from which the artist adds a variety of materials to create interesting textures and colours and in some cases, completely transforms the original subject. “The materials I use in my art vary,” she says. “I’ll use really anything from paint, newspaper, ink and gesso, to silk wax, foil paper, oil and even coffee.”

Pascal Eggerstedt, General Manager at InterContinental Doha The City, says: “We were delighted to partner with Jacinthe on this project as her pieces portray the many fascinating people she has met during her travels throughout Asia.

“Her artwork is the perfect complement to Hwang’s Pan Asian cuisine which features dishes from various countries across Asia. It really gives our guests an authentic experience as they dine with us.”

Born in French province of Quebec, Canada, Jacinthe has been living in Qatar for 11 years now and is a member of both International Artists of Doha and the Fine Arts Society of Doha. She began her career as an artist in Doha working with clay and acrylic painting. Now her focus is on photo transfer along with mixed media. Her passion for photo transfer began with the idea of sharing with others all the beautiful faces she encountered while travelling.

GO: “Made in Asia” will be on display inside Hwang restaurant until December 31 during regular dining hours. Call 4015 8888 for reservations or more information.

LIvIng betWeen CAIro And London, Laura began this series of photographs in 2005 when she was compelled to explore the essence of Egyptian identity in the hope of coming to terms with her own. Guided by childhood memories, her photographs are not meant to be objective observations of a nation, but rather personal reflections of Egypt through her own eyes.

In the Shadow of the Pyramids is a first person perspective exploring memory and identity. With images spanning 2005 to 2014, what began as a look in the mirror to understand the essence of Egyptian identity, expanded into an exploration of the trials and tribulations of a turbulent nation. The result is dark, sentimental and passionate.

Laura’s work was released earlier this year as a book under the same title as the exhibition. Juxtaposing the innocence of the past with the obscurity of the present, the book is an experience, edited to look like a one night’s encounter. A peaceful and tranquil day suddenly turns violent and chaotic, it’s claustrophobic, until a new dawn rises and there is hope again.

In the Shadow of the Pyramids explores contemporary Egypt, reflecting on the emotions, dreams and realities shared by a community within the flux of reformation.

Born in Worcestershire, England, to Egyptian parents, Laura grew up between Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the US. In 2002, she started her career as a newspaper photographer with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Sarasota Herald-Tribune. In 2006, she became freelance so she could focus on pursuing personal projects. Laura

is a graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia with dual degrees in journalism & political science.

Her work has appeared in various publications worldwide, including Time Magazine, The Sunday Times Magazine, Burn Magazine and National Geographic.

Big SCReen

direcTor: Susanne BiercaST: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Rhys Ifans, Charity Wakefield

direcTor: Ken ScottcaST: Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco, Tom Wilkinson, James Marsden

Why iT’S WorTh WaTching?Oscar-winner Susanne Bier’s cinematic offering has been on the shelf for two years now, and though Lawrence delivers a fierce performance (this lady can act!) Serena feels like, how shall we put it, a depression-era Gone Girl (for those of you who’ve seen that global hit, you’ll get what we mean). The plot is melodramatic in epic proportions and, at times, seriously weird; a beautiful blonde captures the heart of a cute, successful guy, only to switch and become the high-maintenance other half of his nightmares. Lawrence’s execution of a luminously beautiful, yet completely contradicting character is what’ll make you watch this ‘til the end. When Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence gave us Silver Linings Playbook, the world was in awe at the two’s on-screen chemistry. In Serena, the duo lacks that ferocious spark, and whilst expectations are high, the reality of duplicating the same success as their previous hit is very bleak. With that said, if you’re into twisted screenplay then this one’s for you.

Serenaunfinished Business

What’s it about: set in 1930s north Carolina, we’re in the depression era when the future of George pemberton’s (Bradley Cooper) timber empire becomes complicated when he marries serena (Jennifer lawrence). His go-getting wife is both intelligent and insecure, obsessed with expanding her husband’s brutal logging business and the desire to give him a male heir. Beleaguered with her contradictory personality, George gets more than what he bargained for.

What’s it about:a hard-working small business owner and his two associates travel to europe to close the most important deal of their lives. But, this routine business trip soon turns into a sequence of (unplanned) events that could really make or break this deal.

Why iT’S WorTh WaTching?Put one of the funniest actors in Anchorman with the younger, and way hotter, Franco brother, and you’ve got a recipe for comedy success. Now, imagine them playing uber-hilarious roles where they go off on a business trip with the boss, only to find themselves in spontaneous stops like a global economic summit, or, worse, a huge fetish event – awesome, right? Well, this is one business trip that goes off the rails fast and good, and you’ll love the humour-filled banter throughout. Both Vince Vaughn and Dave Franco hold their own; Vaughn proves why being typecast in Hollywood can work to your benefit, while Franco offers another funny performance to carve his rightful position in the comedy world (he’s pretty dishy too!).

iF The iriSh modern rock quartet’s 2013 debut, In A Perfect World, was a festival-puller, then Kodaline’s sophomore offering is a radio-ready, guitar-led album with slamming choruses and 12 potential future anthems, created for the sole purpose of breathtaking stadium performances. That’s right, for their second album, Kodaline has done something that many musicians don’t, they’ve stuck to the band’s blueprint, bringing us a bigger sound and bold attitude for fans, old and new, to love! Some of our favourite tracks on the album include Honesty, with its soaring chorus and soft-rock nature; the soothing rhythm of The One; the menacing clamour of Human Again; and the jaunty pop sounds of Coming Alive and Love Like This. There’s acoustic subtlety in most tracks including the melodious lullaby of the album closer, Love Will Set You Free. Each track has a backbone and lyrics that endorse Kodaline’s alt-rock talent and reputation - they no longer need comparing to the likes of Coldplay or Oasis – the Irishmen put forward a mature collection of sway-along tunes and we think Coming Up For Air will well and truly help the foursome make a lasting impression in the music world this year.

Because you know it’s All About That Bass (HoW catchy is that tune?), and a boat-load of sharp-witted lyrics, bubbly hooks, and smart songs, when it comes to the playful sound of Meghan trainor. this lady was one of the most exciting newcomers of pop in 2014 with her up-tempo beats and straight-up word game. Check out the songs Bang Dem Sticks, My Selfish Heart and Lips Are Movin’ to get a real feel for her musical vibe. there’s the John legend duet like I’m Gonna Lose You and the playful fusions of r&B, hip-hop and dancehall on Mr Almost and Walkashame. When she slows it down for What If I, we hear a little of the crooning voice of etta James – damn, this girl can pretty much sing about anything and make it sound fabulous. she has her own style; she’s lovable and she’s “bringing booty back!” and she’s also reminding you all that “every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top” – what’s not to love? Meghan trainor ain’t no one-hit wonder. Watch out for this savvy singer, she’s going to be making moves and shaking up the music industry, for sure.

We Take a RiDe inTo The DeseRT in ToyoTa’s TRD-speC FJ CRuiseR, a DeDiCaTeD oFF-RoaDeR WiTh eveRyThing you neeD FoR DominaTing The Dunes…

TOYOTA’S QUIRKY RETRO LOW-FRILLS, high thrills off-roader gets a makeover courtesy of the Japanese automaker’s performance division, TRD (Toyota Racing Development). TRD recently launched its UAE base late last year, and now offers aftermarket parts and TRD-spec versions of Toyota’s passenger car range, the FJ being the most recent addition.

For most of the range, the modifications are almost purely cosmetic, with aero kits, alloy wheels, chromed exhausts, and so on. However,

the FJ Cruiser’s mods go much more than just skin deep. Sure, there are the cosmetic touches, such as the rather nice-looking black 17-inch alloys, the chromed TRD exhaust, shift-knob and fender flares, which do all add to the overall visual effect.

But then there are some serious additions which are dedicated specifically to the fine art of desert driving.

For example, there are the special TRD shocks and coil springs that add ground clearance, and underbody

protection in the form of a skid plate and side sill protectors. There’s the compass/inclinometer setup on the dashboard (an inclinometer is that ball floating in liquid that tells you whether you’re upside down or not…). And then there is the built-in air compressor for inflating your tyres after you’ve let them down for desert driving, which is probably the most useful feature of all.

Not so useful, but cool anyway, is the TRD flagpole that screws into a mount on the roof, so that people can spot you from a distance when traversing the undulating dunes of the desert!

Other standard features on the TRD FJ which add icing to the cake are the navigation system and rear parking camera on the infotainment screen, as well as cruise control.

The engine for the TRD FJ remains the same – Toyota’s 4.0l V6, which

puts out 268hp and 380Nm of torque through the five-speed automatic transmission, which itself can be manually shifted between 2WD, 4-High and 4-Low. Being geared more towards torque than horsepower, the FJ is not the fastest SUV on the road, but the considerable torque will churn through or over most obstacles with little fuss, helped along by the FJ’s relatively lightweight design.

There are also such useful driver aids

as the A-Trac Active Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and differential lock.

The TRD FJ suffers from the same complaints as the standard FJ Cruiser, namely a budget-looking plasticky interior, cramped rear seats and unrefined on-road ride comfort. However, for serious 4WD enthusiasts, these issues are secondary to off-road performance, and in that regard, few SUVs offer as much bang for your buck as the TRD FJ. Indeed, most of the parts that come standard are only available as aftermarket or third-party parts on most 4WDs.

At around QR155,000, the TRD FJ is pricey compared to the standard FJ Cruiser, but in our opinion, if you like to hit the desert, you won’t be disappointed.

With derivatives like the 500L and 500X, are you developing 500 as a sub-brand of Fiat, and is there more planned?Yes, we are, but for the time being this is it. We are launching the 500L Trekking in the Middle East soon, and the 500X towards the end of the year, but that’s it, because we believe there is a limit to which you can stretch a brand.

Who are you targeting with the 500X?The segment crosses many audiences, so in terms of the customers, I don’t think there is a specific age or gender or social position. When it comes to the 500 world, in most cases we talk about upper-mainstream, premium customers. Last weekend we launched the 500X in Italy, and we saw more than 50% of people visiting us coming from different brands, even brands like BMW and Mercedes. Originally, we expected Nissan

Juke or MINI Countryman customers, but we were seeing people currently driving models like the 1 Series and A Class as well, which was quite interesting!

Why did you choose Dynamo as a brand ambassador? We went through a list of possibilities, and in Dynamo we found a good fit, because he is incredibly well-known amongst young people between 17 and 30 years-old, and this group is more active on the web, they make everything viral very quickly if they like what they see. On top of that, Dynamo is a very credible professional. Behind everything he does is a long study, and we wanted to team up with someone who was serious, and credible, and full of substance, like our car, and I have to say it is working in this case incredibly well. When he posted something on social media linked to Fiat, we

got 1 million views in five hours, so I think the magic show tonight will give us another tremendous boost.

Being an SUV, are you expecting the 500X to capture a bigger share of the Middle East market?Yes, very much so, though it’s going to be a niche market share, but we have the opportunity to establish the brand in the proper way. We are not forced to do incredible volumes, we just want to position it among the right audiences and establish ourselves.

most prominent one: “My father is my biggest supporter,” Zaid tells us. “He has supported me throughout my entire journey.”

So, with such great encouragement, what is Zaid’s driving secret? “I’m a smooth and consistent driver,” he says. “I try to focus on finishing the race.” Zaid advises any young man looking to enter the motor racing world: “Race streets are dangerous, stay away from it!”

There was also another pro-driver at the event, Austria’s Clemens Schmid. The 24-year-old has been paving the way for other young drivers in this Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East. While showing us around his pit and racing car, with engines roaring in the background, Clemens recalls the beginning of his passion for cars. “I started at 10-years-old with go-karts,” he says. “Whom ever wants to start a driving profession, start at a young age with go-karts, working your way up, and if possible go to Italy to be part of other driving experiences,” Clemens adds. His biggest motoring inspirations and role models are Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alfonso. “I met Michael Schumacher in 2014 and it was very inspiring,” he shares. When it comes to family support of a

profession that can be dangerous, he couldn’t help but giggle and says: “My family is supportive, but my mum is a bit scared.” We can all admit that car racing is nothing but pure adrenaline and Clemens was as ready as he could be, for this round four challenge. “I’m an aggressive driver,” he says. “I feel a great joy when I’m driving a straight line, as opposed to the curves. I don’t get nervous, and once I’m inside the car, it’s all about the excitement.”

And what does the future hold for this professional driver? “I would like to keep doing endurance races a bit more,” he says. “Also, continue my car-racing profession as long as possible.”

BlaCkBerry PassPort

The latest device from Blackberry, featuring a bold

new design, has the whole world talking, but is it for

the right reasons? We find out…

PLUGGED-IN

the first truly noteworthy release from Blackberry in over a year, the passport gets its name for its truly novel

passport-sized shape. it has polarised opinions amongst practically everyone we’ve spoken to about it – some

love it, and some hate it, but we can’t fault Blackberry for trying something new. But, has it worked?

our first impressions of using the passport were that it initially felt extremely unnatural and awkward. the wide

shape completely rules out one-handed use, and it feels heavy and unbalanced in the hands, although this is

because of a decidedly solid-feeling build quality.

once you become accustomed to it, the user experience does improve significantly, and you find typing quite

smooth and easy with the keypad.

the interesting thing about the passport is that when you turn it horizontally, the keypad doubles as a touchpad

to navigate the menus. However, the transition is glitchy, which is a shame, because this really lets down a feature

that had great potential to be a game changer.

We’re a fan of the Blackberry 10 os – it’s smooth and intuitive, but notoriously lacks in the apps department,

which again lets a potentially great gadget down. on the other hand, it’s extremely easy to read in sunlight,

which is a bonus in the Middle east!

the width of the screen in vertical mode is great for reading messages and emails, and combined with the

keypad this might make it a hit with the hard core business types, but for everyone else it will fail to shine in

the face of competition.

Verdict: Wouldn’t give up an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy for it in a million years…

Making the right product choice and knowing the correct techniques while applying makeup can make you look

your best. Here are Reshu Malhotra’s do’s and dont’s…

do: uSe a makeuP BruSh To aPPLy your FoundaTionUse a foundation brush to apply foundation as it not only applies the right amount of product to your face but it allows you to properly buff it out leaving an even coverage on your skin.

do: FiLL in The eyeBroWSA fuller eyebrow is always more appealing for the complexion but many of us either have sparse, thin, or light eyebrows that need a little help in the volume department. Applying too much filler, however, can look just as bad, so use an easy hand and choose a shade that is slightly lighter than your natural hair colour.

do: uSe maScaraMascara has an undeniable affect that enhances and elongates lashes. Without Mascara, your makeup application may look incomplete. It allows your eyes to look bigger and more awake. My favourite Mascara is Lancome Hypnose.

do: uSe eyeLiner cLoSe To The LaSh LineApply eyeliner as close to the lash line as

possible as this definitely enhances your eye. Be sure to get the liner between the lashes and to fill up the empty spaces. I would recommend Make Up For Ever aqua eyeliner.

do: Wear The BLuShThis is the one beauty product that with a simple brush across your cheeks can bring the most life to your face and add depth and dimension. Smile and dust your colour to the apples of your cheeks. My favorite blush is Mac Peaches and Nars “Orgasm.”

don’T: noT maTching The LiP Liner WiTh LiPSTick This is the most common makeup mistake. Make sure you choose lip liner that is the same shade as your lipstick and it should be blended well. For best results use a lipstick brush.

don’T: Wear The Wrong FoundaTion ShadeFoundation is supposed to create a perfect smooth complexion and cover-up any imperfections. This is why you should always use a foundation, which blends in

Keep up with reshu, a uae- based make up artist and beauty blogger on www.reshumalhotra.com

with your skin and is a shade closest to your complexion and no lighter. You should always match the foundation on your jaw line before buying.

don’T: aPPLying makeuP on dry and FLaky Skin Applying makeup on dry skin will only enhance the dry flakes and fine lines. It is very important to prep the skin by using the right primer and a moisturiser before applying the makeup. Smoother skin means smoother application and a better-finished look.

don’T: oVer TWeeZ The eye BroWSWell-groomed brows can enhance your overall complexion. You do want to shape your overgrown brows but don’t tweeze them too much. As we get older, our brows naturally become sparse, so don’t tweeze them too thin, just stick with cleaning up the area around your brows and follow their natural arch for your best shape. Always get them threaded professionally.

Dine Under the Stars

This month, FACT had the opportunity to try the delicious and appetising fare of the upcoming restaurant; Panorama at The Torch. We were bowled over and we are about to share this

experience with you…

“I love Doha’s multi-cultural atmosphere.

In the kitchen, I work with, Nepalese,

Egyptians, Sri Lankans – the staff is

nothing, but diverse.”

T here is a new foodie place in town and its Chef De Cuisine – Vincent Denayer that gives FACT a sneak peek of what’s to come.

With the trend of new and exciting restaurants in town, we have one more to add in! Opening its doors to the lovely people of Doha on March 9, Panorama at The Torch Doha is a bistronomy – a chic combination of bistro and gastronomy, offering nearly traditional recipes to relish in. fact was fortunate to try some tantalizing appetizers from the menu and indulge in a chat with Panorama’s chef Vincent. so, get ready for a first-hand review from us (with tiny secrets from the chef ).

Located at the 50th floor, we couldn’t help, but cherish the beautiful panoramic view of the city. Whilst syncing this moment, chef Vincent walks in to greet us. He is from Belgium and his stay in Qatar has been only six-months old, “Belgium’s weather is not the best, I moved to Thailand for about four years and then to Bali for three.” his background started with Michelin-star restaurants, moving then to work in Europe and Asia. How did he find Doha, after Bali and Thailand? “I was very surprised by Doha, I’m able to walk freely around the city” he shares. Talking about the climate and diversity of Doha, he says; “I love Doha’s multi-cultural atmosphere.”

About the menu at Panorama, chef Vincent reveals: “you can expect a simple, but sophisticated French bistro.” As we chatted about the menu, our first exquisite dish had arrived, plateau de fruits de mer; prawns, scallops, lobster salad in shell,

zeeland mussels, smoked salmon and French oysters. Perfect serving for two this dish is highly recommended to seafood lovers; must-try peeps. If you’re a chicken fanatic, Panorama offers the chicken croquette with lemon, mayonnaise herb sauce; simply yummilicious. The crevette royale provencale was simply luscious with the prawns with paprika tomato sauce, saffron rice and seasonal vegetables.

As the tasty dishes started to pile up, we re-route towards the high-end lounge, ‘sky’ located above Panorama restaurant. The lounge will serve combinations of gastronomy bites, innovative mocktails, premium cold beverages and signature teas. With a happy tummy we sit down for the second round of dishes. Parfait de thon et avocat was next; diced fresh tuna on a bed of avocado salsa, pomegranate and homemade toasted country bread; healthy and we had our *slurp moment*(wow)! if you crave for a delectable shared entrée, poulet de France entier roti – free range French roasted chicken- with saffron rice, parsnips, ratatouille and pan jus is the dish you wouldn’t want to miss. Dessert addicts, please try the nougat parfait, it’s delectable!

We would also like to recommend some beverages we had the opportunity to taste.

CHEF’S TABLE

the red splash martini was a punchy drink with a mix of watermelon, strawberry puree, and lime. If you’re looking for a refreshing drink, the strawberry and basil mojito is for you; potent combo of strawberries, lime juice, fresh basil leaves and soda water. Healthy buffs, try the wellness nectar, it has beetroot, carrot, raspberry, strawberry, fresh orange juice and grenadine mix!

After the long conversation with chef Vincent about his solid plans for the restaurant, and of course the supreme foodie delights we had indulged in, we decided to take our leave.

The recently opened Marsa Malaz at The Pearl Doha

With a rustic touch, a graffiti wall to admire and a New York-esque vibe, El Faro will leave you captivated and dazed as to whether you’re still in Doha.

I f you happen to be an art and interiors fan, then the setting at El Faro will impress you. There’s an artistic, modern twist to this cool new Spanish

dining venue that’s located on the ground floor of Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha, this restaurant will charm you with its compelling décor, meaning that

from the second you step in, you’ll see that the architecture is something worth talking about. With a rustic touch, a graffiti wall to admire and a New York-esque vibe, El Faro will leave you captivated and dazed as to whether you’re still in Doha. Much to our delight, it’s not only the façade that has caught our attention, there’s a fantastic menu serving up some of the most delicious Spanish food in town, and boasting a drool-worthy tapas bar.

We meet the charismatic and friendly head chef, Raúl, the mastermind behind El Faro’s kitchen. Not only is he the head chef of El Faro, but one that loves to interact with the people dining at the restaurant. Raúl loves to step out of the kitchen and have a one-on-one chat with the restaurant’s diners. This is the best way to get feedback and to also give guests the chance to meet the man who concocted the dish they’re eating. The Spanish head chef gave FACT one of the most delectable tasting menus that we’ve ever tried. For starters, we recommend patatas bravas – fried potato with spicy sauce. If you’re looking for a crunchy bite, try pan a la catalana – grilled Spanish bread with tomato and garlic. If seafood is what you crave, go for the perfectly cooked fritura de pescado – Seafood fried Andalusia-style with

lemon – simply mouthwatering! Also, if you love prawns then this dish will blow you away – the gambas al ajillo - sautéed prawn with garlic and chilli – a flavor-packed treat for your tastebuds!

El Faro has a breathtaking outdoor terrace with magnificent views, great for enjoying in this late winter weather. It also means you have the option of indoor and outdoor dining on your visit.

To continue with our foodie journey at El Faro, as a main course we highly recommend the seafood paella made with fideva vermicelli and an array of different seafood. This traditional Spanish dish will leave you happily full. FACT couldn’t leave without trying Raúl’s appetising desserts. We went for the arroz con leche – milk rice, sugar, cinnamon and strawberries – if you’ve got a sweet tooth, that dessert should cover it! For those who desire something tantalising and exotic, with a refreshing taste, go for the sopa de menta – melon, apple, yogurt and ice cream (FACT’S favourite!) For those foodie lovers who always crave chocolate as a dessert, EL Faro has the perfect goodie for you, churros with cinnamon and chocolate dip – it’s heavenly!

Walking out of El Faro with full bellies and huge smiles, we couldn’t wait to rave all about this authentic Spanish dining experience you our families, friends, and you, the readers! The venue is stunning, the food incredible, and the service first-class. If it’s a casual evening dinner with five-star hospitality that you want, El Faro is the place to find it.

a refreshingly different perspective away from the city traffic! Not all visitors are

aware of the love Qataris have for horses, and what an interesting and educational

time can be had at the different equestrian centres in Doha. And Education City is

such an architectural delight; I doubt that many tourists would get to see that area of

Doha unless they are explicitly told about it.
