Thanks for Visiting Our Media Center!!!

Student Survey• I surveyed several

students ranging from kindergarten to third grade.

• I asked several questions about the media center– What do you like most

about going to the media center?

– How often do you visit the media center?

– Why do you go to the media center?

Page 26: Facilities Plan 2

Student Survey Results• I had a variety of answers from the

students I interviewed. • Most students visit the media center

to check out books for AR.• Students visit the media center

daily.• Kindergarten students can check

out easy books once a week. Their visit is supervised by their teacher.

• Students also use the media center for computer lab.

• Most students I surveyed enjoyed going to the media center. Some even said they would like to be able to do more. They really liked the idea of story time.

Page 27: Facilities Plan 2

Teacher Survey• I surveyed about 15 teachers. I asked a variety of

questions about the media center.– All teachers said they would like to see an area

used for teaching classes that could also be used for student work.

– They also thought there should be a time and area for story time. Some teachers I interviewed have taught at the school for a while and said they used to have readers theater and story time once a week. They would like to see that come back.

– They also really liked the idea of having a teacher work room with computers and other equipment.

– Currently the computers for teacher use are located in the media center. Moving them to a separate room would allow more work space and a place to put more equipment.

– Most teachers said they would like to see more student and teacher involvement in the media center.

Page 28: Facilities Plan 2

Policies & Media Center Use

• The media center is used by teachers and students.

• The media center opens at 7:30 and closes at 3:30. During these hours anyone is allowed to use the facilities.

• Teachers schedule times for entire class visits.

• Individual students can visit the media center anytime through out the day.

Page 29: Facilities Plan 2

Media Center Use

• The color printer is only for teacher use.• There is not a maximum number of pages

you can print.• The Media Specialist teaches classes on

research and note taking. We do not have a area in the media center to have classes, so the media specialists has to go to classrooms.

• Weekly notices are sent out to students with overdue books. There are no fines for late books.

Page 30: Facilities Plan 2

Relevant Policies

• Teachers are allowed to check out as many books as needed. During particular times of the year (like Christmas) they put a limit on the number of books that can be checked out.

• There is not a policy for how long teachers can keep materials.

• Teachers are encouraged to collaborate with the media specialists throughout the year. Many teachers use the media center and media specialist when planning lessons.

Page 31: Facilities Plan 2

Policy Changes

• Have a copy machine for students to use. Students will pay 5 cent for one copy. There is not a copy machine students can use.

• Develop a policy for checking out media software, hardware and books. Only allow materials to be out for two weeks.

• Teachers need to schedule media center visits two weeks ahead of time. This will allow the media specialist to prepare.

• Schedules for story time should be scheduled at the beginning of the year. Each teacher will have a scheduled time to visit once a week.

Conclusion

• I realized by doing this project there are several things that need to be added to our media center to make it more productive.

• I hope to be able to use this information and make our media center more successful.
