FACILITIES MANAGEMENT UNIT

Our Vision

We aim to be an excellent facilities manager that provides all staff and students with a comfortable

and safe working and study environment as well as efficient and effective administrative support, so

that their work and studies can be facilitated, and their sense of belonging towards the University

can be reinforced.

Our Mission

We are committed to:

managing and maintaining the premises efficiently and cost-effectively;

providing courteous and efficient administrative service to all;

encouraging and promoting an energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe working and

study environment;

enabling staff to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude so that they can contribute

Enhancement on Student Amenities

Set up and management of Fitness Room at E0714, Level 7, Block E, Jubilee

College

The first on-campus Fitness Room was set up in July 2015. Though small in size, users can find their favorite way to break a sweat with various equipment including exercise bikes, treadmills, multi-function trainer, chip raise, dumbbells and sit-up benches inside.

The room opened since 10 August to all students and staff. Opening of the room has expanded from its initial stage of 2 sessions daily on weekdays to 8am-8pm (Monday to Saturday, except Public Holidays) since 14 March 2016. A total of 793 visits have been received so far.

Students and staff who have completed the pre-requisited training can apply for a user permit to make use of this facility.

Services Enhancement for Multi-Purpose Halls Usage

Waiving of Guest Fee

More efficient change to hall settings

Provision of free sports equipment

Some timeslots were reserved for free use under first-come-first-served basis with limited quota. This arrangement was well received by students and staff.

Apart from free timeslots, the number of guest fee waiver had been increased from 2 to 3. It was specially catered for team playing sports.

To provide flexible services to users, starting from 1 March 2016, manpower was deployed to support the customized sport court setting to fit for users’ sport interests.

Some rackets and balls are available for hall users on loan. This enhanced service is mainly targeted at those spontaneous hall users. The equipment is available right outside the halls on first-come-first-served basis.

Provision of New Computer Bar Table at Level 6, Block E, Jubilee College

Provision of outdoor furniture in the drop-off area, Level G, Jubilee College

To provide convenient computing and printing services to students, New Computer Bar Table had been set up at JC. Under joint efforts from ITU and FMU, new computer table with provision of power and network cable compartments were fabricated.

For balancing students’ busy study life, the Unit aimed at exploring new facilities that can provide comfortable area that students can have a break. This new set up of furniture not only provided the rest place to students, but also a breath of fresh air outside.

Provision of Furniture for Student Societies

To allow more flexible use of campus communal area for student society activities, some new furniture was procured in August 2015. The new folding tables and chairs are less bulky and also brighter in color scheme. Student societies may set up their booths at designated area (currently confined to -1/F, HMT for trial) accordingly to their needs. Students responded well to this self-served arrangement.

Venues Replanned or New added for Teaching & Learning

To relief the shortage of office space of S&T, re-planning at the office area on Level 11 was carried out in late 2015. A new DNHS General Office with service counter was built to provide better support service to Nursing students.

Building works and building services supports were given to A&SS for setting up of AV equipment installation at the Studio.

After relocation of nursing lab, the space was converted into a Research Lab for S&T. There are 4 compartments inside the Research Lab and each compartment is provided with infrastructure to support versatile research purpose.

Existing counseling room at C0509 was further enhanced to provide better environment for user. An identical counseling room was fitted out at C0609 to meet the needs.

Provision of Facilities for Teaching & Leaning

Installation of Store Racks at E0417 and D0410, Level 4, JC

To provide systematic storage spaces for accommodating A&SS students’ AV equipment as well as work areas for technicians, tall multi-storey rack systems were installed in D0410. Rack systems installed in E0417 served both as storage facilities and room space division panel.

Joint with ETPU, provision of electrical power supply and LAN points for LED screen on stage of Auditorium, JC, for 2015 Orientation Day

The works were conducted to provide the power supply and LAN points for setting up a LED wall for Student Orientation 2015. The provision connects between the AV Control Room (D0211) to the back stage of Auditorium (D0116) including base boxes installation, conduits provision and cables wiring.

Recognition on Student’s works

To fulfil the University’s commitment to setting up of an Exhibition

Hall in JC, a set of exhibition facilities has been installed along the

corridor on Level 1. Schools, LiPACE as well as the community are

also encouraged to show their artistic creation there to appreciate

their students’ work and enhance neighbourhood relationship.

Office replanning with Student Oriented Servicing Counters

Provision of warm water in Changing Rooms

In response to students’ request for hot water supply for shower in changing rooms, additional power cables were installed for stable hot water supply.

New service counters were provided after completion of the FMU and SAO office renovation works. The FMU counter is convenient to students for applying Amenities such as Sport Halls and Fitness Room. The newly added SAO counter provided a direct and open contact point for students to seek for various supports from SAO.

New Presidents’ Chamber

New Presidents’ Chamber at E0814, Level 8, Block E, JC

To provide a convenient access for visitors and meeting attendees, the Presidents’ Chamber had been moved from Level 11 to Level 8, Block E. Its modern, simplistic and flexible design has provided a more user-friendly meeting venue on HMT campuses.

This new University Stone was erected in Jan 2016 signified the standing of the University over a quarter Century. It is now becomes a new icon on Good Shepherd Street.

Enhancement on Office

The relocation of HRU and replanning of PAU and FMU offices enhanced the working environment to colleagues for them to provide better services to staff and or people concerned. The replanning and provision of separated main entrances for both PAU and FMU has greatly enhanced their office security as well as building up independent unit images.

Enhancement on Environment & Greenery

Slope Inspection and Maintenance

The Unit kept on monitoring the slopes and remove rubbish, loose leaves, rocks and dead trunks.

To avoid desertification, uncovered areas have to be replenished with soil and replanted

Following the “Guide to Slope Maintenance” provided by the Civil Engineering Department, the Unit appointed a professional-geotechnical engineer for the slope inspection. The Engineer's inspection revealed that the maintenance of the slope was satisfactory. Yet, the maintenance works, such as clearing of rubbish, replanting, fixing pipes, etc. are ongoing.

Gardening on the campus

To provide comfortable and relaxing campuses to both students and staff, pots of plants have been put at suitable places indoor and outdoor. In certain outdoor areas, planters have been built for stable growth of plants.

Green plants not only can touch up the surroundings, but also improve the environmental conditions. To support a green campus at JC, vertical green wall has been mounted on Princess Margaret Road that can absorb heat, increase humidity, regulating the microclimate, mitigate noise and also helps to break down emissions of toxic gases from the vehicles nearby. It is the highest external vertical greenery institutional building (73m) in Hong Kong.

Enhancement on Campus Environment and Facilities

Work condition improvement to enhance operation efficiency

Prevention is better than cure

Raised platform was tailor-made to provide safe maintenance access to the plants.

Provision of Outdoor Raised Platform System for Colling Tower at JC

Preventive maintenance was carried out to the air conditioning system main equipment in Library and tutorial rooms on -1/F, Block B.

Achievement and Campaigns Participation

Green Building Awards

The Jubilee College received the award of Platinum Certification, BEAM Plus v1.1 from the Hong Kong Green Building Council in April 2015. In May 2015, it then received the award of Merit (Institutional) from the FUTURARC GREEN LEADERSHIP AWARD 2015.

Following the BEAM Plus Platinum Project Award, HKGBC organised the public roving exhibition of outstanding green building projects awarded with BEAM Plus Platinum ratings. OUHK has been selected as one of the sites for the Exhibition.

Campaigns Participation

The Unit has proactively participated in campaigns held by the Hong Kong Government or NGOs. Such campaigns encouraged the Unit to uplift the services standard and support the society improvement.

Monitoring the Water Quality

Control the Energy Utility and Reduce Wastage systematically

HMT Campus conducted routine inspection and maintenance of water pumping systems, and water quality testing for the “Quality Water Recognition Scheme for Buildings” – Drinking Water; Flushing Water. Respective Awards were issued by the Water Supplies Department recognized the water quality complied with the standard of the schemes.

HMT Campus participated in Energywi$e (Basic Level) and the Wastewi$e (Basic Level) for the Hong Kong Green Organisation Certification (HKGOC) which was led by the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) alongside the Environmental Protection Department and in conjunction with nine other organisations. The University has taken measures to control the Energy Utility and reduce the Wastage, and have been awarded respective certificates recognizing the standard of the control.
