Greetings!

As we complete a successful academic year and move into the summer months, I want to thank each of you for the contributions you have made to “Creating a Campus of Distinction” this year. I am proud of the job our organization is doing. I see our Key Business Drivers of Teamwork, Customer Service, and Continuous Improvement in action daily. Keep up the good work. The campus looks great.

Looking ahead, the summer months are always busy as we close out the fiscal year finances, complete annual performance evaluations, support graduation, and finish a myriad of projects. Keep Calm and “Get ‘er Done”! We will be very successful as always.

Looking a little farther in the future, the biggest challenge we face as an organization is the massive amount of capital construction we will see over the next five years. Some of you old timers are probably saying “What’s new?” But the difference is that the projects to be completed will be much more invasive on the campus and our students, faculty, and staff. The list of projects includes major renovations in the center of campus (Academic Complex, Burson, Colvard, Belk Plaza Revitalization, Student Career Center renovation).

Infrastructure projects such as campus-wide elevator replacements (already underway), campus-wide generator upgrades and Atkins HVAC will also be disruptive. The list includes projects withdifficult adjacencies (Health and Wellness Center and Union Deck Expansion) and time sensitive projects (new Facilities Operations, Receiving and Stores, Parking and Transportation Services, and Science Building).

There are projects that will disrupt traffic flow such as the East Village Infrastructure Improvements (realignment of John Kirk Drive). The good news out of all this is that we are going to make our campus of distinction even better – with modernized buildings that will serve the campus for the next 25 years. Along with that, we are adding world class student recreation, science, career, student counseling, and admissions/visitors facilities.

The complexity and intrusiveness of these projects are going to require all of us to work together to make sure the 5-Year Capital Plan is a success for the campus. Communication will be the key. There is no doubt that together we will be successful.

I hope each of you will enjoy the summer months and take some vacation time to relax with family and friends. Be safe when traveling this summer.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our annual Fun Day on May 26. It will be a great time!

Beard, Taylor, and Vick Earn UNC Charlotte's 2016 Employee of the Year

Ingenious, dynamic, and exemplary are three words among a list of many that can be used to describe the 2016 Employee of The Year honorees – three of which represent Facilities Management (FM). This year, Lee Beard, Paul Taylor, and Dorothy Vick were recognized for their demonstration of excellence and commitment in the areas of innovation, human relations, and community/public service.

Beard, a central operations manager, was recognized in the category of innovation. He developed and implemented new concepts that have improved building aesthetics and enhanced operations, at a savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars. His design of a power-washing trailer, made locally, enabled FM personnel to clean the exteriors of buildings at half the cost of outside contractors. For a sewer project, Beard spearheaded rerouting the line and worked collaboratively to complete the project, again saving the University money.

Cited as “a talented and innovative leader” Beard, within his three-year tenure, has also demonstrated his keen ability to think “outside the box.”

“There are many people who have contributed to the success of these ideas,” he said. “Without the efforts of others, these ideas would be ‘just ideas,’ not accomplishments.”

Trust, communication, confidence, follow through and teamwork are all traits reflected in the everyday work of Taylor who was acknowledged for his work in human relations. With a total of eight years of service to the University, he has served as zone maintenance manager for two years. Nominators noted that Taylor “has turned around employee attitudes and performance by exercising outstanding mentorship, team building, connecting with people, and taking customer service and communication to a level never before achieved in Facilities Operations.”

Commonly known to shy away from individual recognition, Taylor, when asked to share his thoughts on the award, focused on his upbringing and ongoing goals to help his team. “Team is what really matters,” he said. “My parents instilled in me to be ‘respectful, responsible, and reliable everyday’ because it’s all I have, they would say. My goal is to help our team become more of a trustworthy and dependable resource for our customers.”

As the Capital Projects Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) Coordinator, a role she has served in since 2006, Vick has been a standout among peers and one that is fully devoted to serving UNC Charlotte and the contracting community with the highest level of effort, commitment, and proficiency, wrote nominators. She brought statewide recognition to the University when the program she developed was used as a model for how state agencies and UNC organizations should run HUB programs. She is actively involved with a number of community organizations, including the Metrolina Minority Contractors Association, N.C. Minority Woman Business Enterprise Coordinator’s Network, United Minority Contractors of North Carolina, the Hispanic Contractors Association of the Carolinas, and the National Association of Women in Construction. Her involvement in these organizations has aided the minority community to gain access to local and statewide construction opportunities. Vick was recognized as an Employee of the Year in the category of community/public service.

Committed to making a difference Vick, who began her UNC Charlotte years of service in 1998 as a procurement counselor, stated, “Winning this award is an affirmation of the contributions made to diversity and inclusion on our campus.” She went on to thank leadership for “making the HUB coordinator a reality and recognizing that accomplishments would not happen overnight.”

Employees of the Year were acknowledged formally during the annual Staff Recognition Luncheon held on March 23, 2016. This year’s other nominees from FM were Jeanine Bachtel, Capital Projects, and Greg Kish, Building Environmental Services.

During April’s FM All Employees meeting, Phil Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor, congratulated the honorees and commended them on a “spirit of collaboration” stating, “These honors, at a campus level, are a highlight for us all.”

Employee of the Quarter: Robert J. RobinsonBy Laurie Manderino, Facilities Planning

Robinson enjoys watching and attending NASCAR events, NFL Football (Dallas Cowboys fan), and basketball. His pride and joy are his three adult sons. He loves spending time with them, his daughter-in-law, and seven month old granddaughter. He also enjoys designing things including creating panels, fenders, windows, etc. out of scraps he saved.

Robinson stated “It is an honor to be acknowledged especially by Mr. Jones. In my 15 years here, it has always been my goal to provide quality customer service. I don’t mind going the extra mile.” He also wanted to acknowledge and thank the others in the automotive shop. “A lot of people are not recognized in the automotive shop. Our shop is small but we do big things for our customers.”

Congratulations to Robert J. Robinson (Bobby), Automotive Tech Advance and Lead Mechanic, who was named Employee of the Fiscal Year 2016 Third Quarter! Philip Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities, nominated Robinson for his outstanding customer service.

Phil explains how Robinson went above and beyond the call of duty on January 26, 2016 by getting FM1 back in service within an hour:

“Even though it is his (Robinson’s) job to service and repair vehicles, this took place after normal business hours (after 5:15 p.m.) while he was already staying late to work on other automotive priorities, including working on a safety issue with a Motor Fleet caravan that was reserved to go out the next day.

He stopped what he was doing to tow FM1 from the Student Union back to the Automotive Shop. He could have let FM1 sit overnight (I thought it would be okay to leave it there until morning) and continue his work, but he did not want to risk it being left there. He diagnosed the problem, changed out the switch, and delivered two new keys that evening. This is going above and beyond customer service.”

Robinson has been with UNC Charlotte for 15 years and has over 40 years of automotive maintenance experience. In addition to this recent award, he was named UNC Charlotte’s Employee of the Year in 2009 for his exceptional customer service and innovative thinking. He suggested a preventative maintenance program that saved the University thousands of dollars! Congratulations to members of the Building Environmental Services (BES) Night Floor Crew for winning Team of the Quarter!

Nominated by Rob Ervin, BES North Area Floor Crew Supervisor, the team members are: Mario Moore, Timothy Honeycutt, Jorge Nuno, Randy Sidbeck, Trokon Taybior, Wilfride Joline, Joe Scollo, Ray Duckett, Macien Jean-Giles, Melvin Mayfield, and Bill Costello. Each played an important role in flood recovery efforts.

On January 27, 2016 at 11:30p.m. the North Area Floor Crew reported to work during regular scheduled work hours at the College of Education.

The building was flooding in multiple areas on the first and ground floors. A hot water pipe burst in classroom 110 which overflowed into the main lobby, multiple classrooms, multiple offices, computer labs, down stairwells, and down to the ground floor. Some areas had almost two inches of standing water. The flood had damaged ceiling tiles, walls, and flooring.

The facility would have been considered a disaster area had the floor crew not committed to the task and utilized effective skills and prompt attention to the issue. The floor crew worked diligently throughout the entire eight-hour night shift working feverishly, extracting the flood water, removing broken ceiling tiles, and preparing the College of Education to be operational for the next business day.

The cleanup was extremely successful. After reviewing a video taken during the flood, the office staff of the College of Education building commented on the exemplary impression created regarding how thoroughly the area was cleaned. Additionally, staff commented on how effectively sanitized the facility was upon arriving to work that morning.

Throughout the year, Facilities Management Human Resources (FM-HR) coordinates and offers a variety of learning and development opportunities for FM employees. During the third quarter of fiscal year 2016, Leadership, Technical, and Supervisor Safety Talks (SST) training were facilitated.

Safety Fair

A big THANKS to everyone who came out to this year’s Safety Fair on May 4!Our 6th Annual FM Safety Fair was a great success and a continuing example of excellent teamwork. Just as in previous years, the FM Safety Committee members were the “MVP’s” of the day. They were there early for set up, assisted vendors for unloading/loading and parking directions, and much more.

A fter nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Mr. James Brown (J.B.) has retired from UNC Charlotte. J.B. began working at UNC Charlotte on September 25, 1988. During his tenure, he served as a floor technician on the BES Floor Crew. J.B. was known for his consistency and dedication to service on the job and was well respected by his colleagues.

Below are a few comments from some of J.B.’s co-workers describing the impact he had on their lives. J. B. will be missed and he will celebrated for years to come.

Elzy (Smoke) Neely, South Area Floor Crew Tech“I have known J.B. for 20 years. He’s known to never miss a day of work. He is always there to help you with whatever you need. He always speaks his mind about everything and anything. J.B. you’ll be missed!”

He would always let you know when he was around with his signal, calling to get your attention. Overall, J.B. was a great co-worker but most of all he was an even better friend. He was a very good and sincere team player and worked well with other employees. Whenever there was an issue he would jump around like a rabbit to complete the job in a timely manner. When there was a flood in the Rowe Arts building there was a lot of water on the floor. J.B. jumped in the water, and took a long bristol brush and cleaned the drain in the floor. He unclogged the drain and resolved the flood within a couple of hours. He was a very good worker and he will be missed. His efficiency and ability inspires me as a pillar example at UNC Charlotte.”

A significant enhancement is underway at Storrs in the College of Arts + Architecture for the Dean’s Suite. The first phase is now complete, with the second phase beginning construction this summer. This renovation provides an important and updated improvement to the face of the college, and creates the brand the college wishes to present itself in the community and to prospective students.

Design Services’ mission is to support the University by enhancing the quality of our facilities and creating a campus of distinction. We provide the planning, design, engineering, and construction management for renovations and new facilities with project budgets of $300,000 or less. We ensure that the quality of UNC Charlotte’s physical environment supports the University’s excellence in teaching, research, and campus life. The complexity of merging many points of view and budget constraints to achieve a project goal is met with great consideration by the Design Services team. Nothing embodies complexity and varying opinions more than the demolition of the Belk Tower. This was a highly coordinated effort successfully executed by Design Services, and continues to be a topic of discussion as design is underway for a new Belk Plaza in its replacement. Sections of Belk Tower can be seen behind North Deck, awaiting new memorial homes to be located across campus.

Spring welcomes ongoing renovation projects as we work to complete many of these by fiscal year end in June. “Improvements in Progress” signs can be seen throughout campus, and we are appreciative of the teamwork that is given in support of creating our campus of distinction. Design Services wishes to recognize the efforts of everyone throughout Facilities Management as we all work to bring fiscal year 2016 to a successful close.

Doug Weickum has been assigned as our onsite and on call Building Automation Systems (BAS) technical support.

Doug is AX certified in both BAS and Enterprise Security. He has worked for Activelogix since 2009 and has been assigned to the City of Raleigh since 2012 assisting them with their Enterprise Development.

Doug is originally from Portland, Oregon and has served eight years in the United States Air Force. Before moving to Charlotte and working with Activelogix, he worked as a Low Voltage/Automation Contractor in Oregon for 10 years.

Doug is married with two children, and he loves playing guitar and video games with his children.

Facilities Planning welcomes Tyler Sytsma, our new Sustainability Coordinator. Tyler started his position April 11, 2016. Tyler will be working with the planning, communication, and continuing development of sustainability (green) initiatives throughout campus. In his previous employment, Tyler worked as the Director of Global Affairs at a Midwest consulting firm with the focus on international expansion of businesses in a responsible manner. Tyler graduated from Arizona State University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability, a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and recently finished his Executive Master of Sustainability Leadership degree in 2016. Tyler is a veteran of the Marine Corps and in his free time, he enjoys running, going to the dog park, and traveling; recently returning from a hiking trip in Patagonia. We are excited to have Tyler join our team and believe that his skills will help grow and distinguish the sustainability initiatives of UNC Charlotte. Please join us in welcoming Tyler to the team! It is with mixed emotions that the Facilities Information Systems (FIS) team announces the resignation of Mr. Bill Rossomano, our Building Automations Systems (BAS) contractor with Activelogix.

As most of you know, Bill has served as our onsite and on call Building Automation technical support since August 2010, and he has provided significant organizational support for numerous Building Automation projects.

Bill has been offered and has accepted a new opportunity as a Program Engineer for Hoffman Building Technologies in Greensboro.

We are saddened to see Bill depart but wish him the best of everything and much success in his new endeavors. Please join Facilities Information System in wishing him well. Bill’s last day with us was February 12, 2016. Doug Weickum is now the onsite contractor with Activelogix.

Sticking with anything for 30 years is an accomplishment. Years ago, it was common to start and end your career with a single company. Nowadays, workers regularly switch companies and careers.

When a coworker reaches the 30-year anniversary mark, it is truly a monumental accomplishment. In 1985, Robert Gray began his career here at UNC Charlotte and we in Facilities Operations want to take this opportunity to thank him. We have benefited from his expertise, and he has been a real asset to Facilities Management.

Robert works in our Renovations shop and has contributed skill, time, ideas, energy, and loyalty. We have noticed and appreciated all these contributions. Our future looks bright with you in it.

Kathy Fisher, Motor Fleet Administrator, was among 24 faculty and staff members and 33 students recognized during an International Women’s Day program on March 31. This year’s event was sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Multicultural Resource Center.

Nominated by Jessica Siracusa and Andrea Houghton, their comments were as follows: “Kathy Fisher has supported the positive study experiences of 250+ international student visitors in her role as Motor Fleet Administrator at UNC Charlotte. The availability of motor fleet vehicles to university officers permits the Office of Intercultural Outreach Programs (IOP) to provide study experiences at UNC Charlotte to inbound international students at an affordable cost. Kathy has proven to be a key player in ensuring that motor fleet vehicles are reserved, clean, and safe for the transportation on IOP participants. Kathy works creatively and in cooperation with IOP to establish reservation timelines, identify training needed for drivers, and even troubleshoot problematic situations that occasionally occur. Kathy’s display of patience, understanding, and her ability to navigate the motor fleet processes fluently helps IOP run smoothly. Although Kathy is not on the official IOP staff roster, we consider her a valued on-campus partner in international education.”

Congratulations, Kathy, on a well-deserved honor.

Coming Soon.. . New Campus Outage Notification Process

A new campus notification development is currently in the works. The creation of the new process is a team effort between Facilities Information Systems and Facilities Operations and will provide Facilities Operations the ability to create and send the campus outage notifications directly from within ARCHIBUS.

The new ARCHIBUS Outage Notification Requests view will provide Facilities Management personnel a more efficient method to submit outage information to Facilities Operations who will then consolidate the details of the outage notification, post, and distribute.Advantages of the new outage notification process: ~ Enables the use of GIS data to easily include images and maps for location and outage clarification ~ Provides a consistent layout for obtaining all necessary information ~ Facilitates a professional-looking campus notification format for distribution ~ Saves resources and time!Stay tuned in the upcoming months for the roll out of this new process….

It’s that time of the year again…replacing our oldest desktop computers within Facilities Management. Facilities Information Systems recently completed its computer inventory verification in an effort to prepare for the upcoming Business Affairs funded computer replacement project that will begin in June. Thanks to Business Affairs and Technical Operations & Planning’s funding allocation, this year we will be able to successfully replace

a significantly larger number of our oldest computers.

In the upcoming weeks, Facilities Information Systems will be working with ITS Desktop Support and Dell installers to schedule the roll out of approximately 100 computer replacements, a considerable increase over last year’s 60 computer replacements. More information will be communicated to those receiving new computers and to the managers and

supervisors in each shop or zone area once the rollout schedule is finalized.

The new computers will include the Windows 10 Operating System along with the newest Microsoft Office 2016 suite. Facilities Information Systems has discussed with ITS Client Engagement and will be working with their team to schedule several Windows 10 training sessions prior to and during the roll out of the new computers.

On January 22, 2016, at 6:05 pm, Jon and Jessica Coty welcomed Loyette Maeve Coty. She weighed 1 lb, 15 oz. and was 14 inches. Loyette was born three months early, but is doing really well and was able to come home on April 13, 2016. Please join the Facilities Information Systems (FIS) team in congratulating Jon and his wife, Jessica, on the birth of their beautiful baby girl!

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new campus traffic pattern at the intersection of Cameron Boulevard and Craver Road. The new Phillips Road opened on March 12. The intersection of Phillips Road and Cameron Boulevard is open with a new traffic signal. Asphalt along a section of the old Phillips Road has been removed.

Construction manager, Jennifer Price, explained that drivers and pedestrians should continue to remain alert as they maneuver the new traffic pattern. “Everyone’s safety is paramount, so members of the campus community should exercise caution as students, faculty and staff adjust to these changes.”The Phillips Road realignment is part of the ongoing Campus Infrastructure Development plan to provide long-term benefits for vehicular and pedestrian flow around the University. Roadway Improvements Mark a Milestone with New Bridges

Belk Plaza

The much anticipated conceptual plan for the transformation of Belk Plaza was revealed April 11 during the last of three public forums presented by the University. The forums, which began in February, were a part of an open process to solicit input from the campus community, alumni, and others on how to best utilize the plaza’s space.

We want Belk Plaza to be more inviting to the campus community,” said Peter Franz, chair of the Belk Plaza Design Committee. “All of what you see is the culmination of your input.”

LandDesign, a Charlotte-based urban design and landscape architecture firm, created the concept for the improved aesthetic and design.

In describing the functional hybrid of the redesigned space, Adam Martin, a LandDesign associate and UNC Charlotte alumnus, said “We created a palate that would accommodate just about anything. Philip Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities, was among the list of experts to present at the 2016 Smart Water Leadership Summit. This year’s summit was held April 25-26 at UNC Charlotte Center City.

The summit generates value for facility leaders by bringing together industry experts to present and discuss best practices, regulatory requirements, and leadership regarding building water safety and efficiency.

During his presentation entitled “Developing an Award-Winning Facility Leadership Culture,” Jones discussed what he called “a culture of facilities excellence” at UNC Charlotte.

“The bottom line is we’re creating a campus of distinction,” he said as he shared the department’s vision. “It’s about making UNC Charlotte a special place so when people step on our campus they say ‘wow this is something unique and special.’” He went on to discuss the importance of operating daily within the organization’s mission and vision, investing in and supporting people, the advantages of continually assessing actions and progress, and celebrating success.

The Smart Water Leadership Summit is an annual event created and produced by Phigenics, LLC, a water management services company.

The LYNX Blue Line Extension project that will bring light rail to the UNC Charlotte campus has reached another milestone. Construction crews have tunneled below North Tryon Street and onto campus, with the path emerging a few hundred feet behind the Bioinformatics Building.

The Blue Line Extension will expand the rail service from Uptown Charlotte to its terminus on campus. The light-rail extension is scheduled to be operational by August 2017.

As the alignment travels along the median of North Tryon Street and passes the campus entrance at Institute Circle, the rail line gradually descends under the northbound lanes of North Tryon. The alignment follows an 800-foot ramp downward, in the vicinity of the Bioinformatics Building, flows through a 350-foot tunnel and emerges in an area behind that building. Later, the line bridges Toby Creek and ends at the UNC Charlotte Main Station.

The ramp and tunnel are the only underground portions of the entire LYNX line that extends southward to Pineville near Interstate 485. David Smith, CATS construction manager, said. “UNC Charlotte has been a great partner on this project.”
