The phrase ‘soft skills’ is often used to describe the skills which characterise relationships and other people, or how you approach interactions.

For many people, the so-called soft skills are often some of the most difficult skills to develop. Job-related expertise (hard skills) are essential in any profession. However, over the last 10 years, understanding has grown that perhaps soft skills may ultimately be more important in determining levels of success.

01INTRODUCTION TO BASIC FACILITATION

A facilitator is someone who engag-es in the activity of facilitation. They help a group of people understand their common objectives and assists them to plan how to achieve these objectives. A facilitator is defi ned as “one who helps others learn or who helps make things easy”.

Leading a discussion can be anxi-ety-producing: discussions are, by nature, unpredictable, and require instructors to surrender a certain degree of control over the fl ow of in-formation. Careful planning can help us ensure that discussions are lively without being chaotic.

02PREPARATION TO FACILITATE

One of your key roles as a small-group leader is facilitating discus-sions at your meetings. This op-portunity is exciting and thrilling. For others, the task feels daunting. Know that you will improve with time and that there are several tips that will help you improve as a facil-itator.

Presentation skills are extremely essential for you to succeed profes-sionally. It is no longer enough for you to have the necessary capabil-ity to do the job, you should also be able to talk well, write well, and present yourself attractively to your superiors.
