.UNDERSTANDING THE WORD
The verses that comprise today’s first reading are taken
from a section of the book of Wisdom in which the author
deviates from the topic of God’s providence during the Exo-
dus (Wisdom 11:2-19:22) to address the topic of God’s
mercy (Wisdom 11:17-12:22). The reading begins with an
echo of the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) that acknowledges
“there is no god besides you” (Wisdom 12:13). The very
power and might of God lead to God’s justice and leniency.
God’s examples should teach the people “That those who are
just must be kind” (Wisdom 12:19).
The second reading continues the theme from the previ-
ous week, in which Paul acknowledges that “the sufferings
of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory
to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:14). Until the fullness of
that relationship is revealed, the Spirit is given to the com-
munity so as to strengthen the weak and to intercede on their
behalf.
The Gospel reading presents three parables on the nature
of the kingdom of heaven. The source of the parable of the
mustard seed is Mark 4:30-32, while the source of the par-
able of the yeast is “Q” (a collection of sayings used by Mat-
thew and Luke in addition to their material borrowed from
Mark). But the parable of the weeds and wheat is unique to
Matthew, and in fact frames this lection. The explanation
found vv. 36-43 demonstrates that if this parable originated
with Jesus, it has been thoroughly reworked by Matthew.
Several sayings unique to Matthew stress the presence of
good an bad within the Matthean community (13:47-50;
25:1-13; 31-46). That the weeds and wheat grow together
until the “harvest” suggests that the ultimate decision about
who is “weed” and who is “wheat” will be the prerogative of
Jesus at the final judgment. (25:31). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
The inner word: What’s in Your Heart? Re-focus
t can be easy to focus on what’s wrong in
life and in the world. Some time spent focused on
grace and goodness can lead us to a brighter day.
What are the weeds and wheat that invite
you to discern God’s will in your life?
How do you know the difference between
what you need to accept and what you can change
in life?
REFLECTING ON THE WORD
The more we feed the good, the more we rob evil of its
power and grow in trust that God’s merciful love will reign
in the end.
Weeds and wheat, bad and good, sin and grace coexist
in life. News reports tend to highlight the former over the
latter. People ask, “Why does God allow this?” Great minds
have addressed this question. The most common answer:
Without choice there is no real love.
Life is what it is with both good and bad. We can choose
to accept that both the weeds and wheat, the bad and good,
are part of life and choose the good as much as possible. Or
we can spend so much energy on the “why “ that we miss
the good before us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
