Solution for Management of Digitized Text Resources

VIRR is a virtual research platform for the digital preservation, enhancement and dissemination of cultural heritage content like images and texts.

Main Functionalities• Browse collection and textual entities

• Detailed viewing of single pages

• Online editing workspace for structural content Create, edit, and publish table of contents for each textual entity

Build logical combination between scans and structural elements

Generate original pagination

Enrich structural elements with descriptive metadata

Edit and publish bibliographic metadata

• On the fly METS export to the DFG Viewer (http://dfg-viewer.de)

Upcoming Functionalities• Advanced search within all metadata

• Compilation and export of images (as jpgs or within one pdf)

• Integration of Digilib (enhanced viewing environment: zoom, navigate, etc.)

• Integration and storage of transcriptions

• Linkage of ViRR to other relevant online resources (e.g. OPAC of the institute)

• Content enrichment via annotations

Partners• Max Planck Institut for European Legal History, Frankfurt

Legal artifacts of the period of the Holy Roman Empire, http://test-virr.mpdl.mpg.de:8080/virr

Figure 1: Development approach of a software solution

Software solutions are e-science web applications based on the eSciDoc infrastructure.

Solutions are mainly about using and re-using scientific data. This will be realized through:• Data retrieval and data enrichment (metadata management)• Collaborative online working environment• Data persistence

Versioning Persistent identifier (PID)

• Interoperability Following Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) recommendations Defining DCMI Abstract Model (DCAM) and Description Set Profile (DSP)

Figure 7: Browsing the VIRR collection

Figure 8: Details of a textual entity

Development Approach• The software is first developed in cooperation with one institute to serve a specific research

scenario based on a particular data set and then is extended to cover a larger scope of

scientific scenarios.• An instance is a working version of the generic solution, configured for one specific data set.• The generic solution is extendable (“extended solution”) to add new specific features.

Software Usage• Open source project

Code source accessible and documented Usage of Common Development and

Distribution License (CDDL)

• MPDL support Consultancy for installation (application

profile, configuration) Improvement and special features

implementation

Interested Institutions• Kunsthistorisches Institut Florenz (KHI), Florenz

Historical travel guides, antiquarian literature, rare-book collection, a 19th century journal

• Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin Institute series, 18th and 19th century advisory literature
